Blurb: Six years after meeting British soldier Aiden Foster during the Christmas Truce of 1914, Jochen Weber still finds himself thinking about Aiden, their shared conversation about literature, and Aiden’s beautiful singing voice. A visit to London gives Jochen the opportunity to search for Aiden, but he’s shocked at what he finds.

The uniform button Jochen gave him is the only thing Aiden has left of the past he’s lost. The war and its aftermath ripped everything away from him, including his family and his music. When Jochen reappears in his life, Aiden enjoys their growing friendship but knows he has nothing to offer. Not anymore.

It’s Christmas Day of 1914 when British soldier Aiden Foster and German soldier Jochen Weber take a moment to share a little piece of themselves. They bond over books and music and burying the dead, but when the day is over, it will be back to fighting and killing for a cause neither of them can say they still believe in. On a visit to London six years later, Jochen is determined to find Aiden and looks for him at the theatre he spoke of years ago. But when Jochen finds Aiden, A LOT has changed for both men.

This is a WONDERFUL little Christmas story about friendship, hope and recovery. I expected going in that this story would be sad and maybe even a bit depressing…and of course it was! But the sad beauty of it still left me with a feeling of joy and hope.

The beginning…well the beginning was difficult to get through because it was so horrific with the realities of war. But the momentary friendship between Aiden and Jochen left me hopeful for eventual happiness…as it did the same for them.

After the war, when Jochen comes to find Aiden…okay it was still sad! Both men have suffered through so much, and still suffering with the aftereffects of war. But with their growing friendship and the possibilities of “maybe more”, it’s obvious they each hold the missing piece to each other’s happiness. I would rather have “seen” more building up of their friendship instead of being “told” about it though.

In the end…dammit I didn’t want it to end! I wanted more of Aiden and Jochen and to see what happened next, but since this is a novella I must be satisfied with the nice HFN.

Overall Impression: I Really Liked It

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for a fair and honest review.*
