Blurb: Journalist Riley Clark is chasing the story that could make his career—the reported sighting of a fabled Argent shifter. His investigation takes him to the town of Elk Ridge, which turns out to be everything he hates. Things start to look up, however, when he meets Jason Nichols.
Jason is shy, sweet, and has the most beautiful smile Riley has ever seen. Riley wants to keep seeing that smile, and as he spends time with Jason, his hoped for scoop becomes less and less important. But his editor is still pressuring him for that story. So when Riley discovers that Jason is a member of the pack he’s in town to look into, it seems like fate—he can be with Jason and continue his investigation at the same time.
His plan has just one drawback—he hasn’t thought about what will happen if Jason and his pack discover Riley’s real reason for being in Elk Ridge.
Review:
On an assignment for a lead that’ll make his journalistic career soar, Riley Clark comes to small town Elk Ridge for one thing: to verify the existence of an Argent shifter. He’s desperate to prove it and will stop at nothing to get as much information about the local pack as he can. When he meets Jason Nichols, the chef at a local diner, he thinks he’s found someone to pass a little time with while investigating the shifters. Unfortunately for Riley, what he hoped for some casual sex turns into something way more. Not to mention his straight forward feelings towards his job and his assignment start to cloud when he finds out Jason is a shifter. What’s Riley to do when he not only has his job on the line but his and Jason’s hearts as well?
I really, really loved Jason as a character. He’s sweet, shy but very vulnerable when it comes to his heart. When he meets Riley, he thinks he’s finally found someone he can share that part of himself with, who will accept him for who he is. Riley, I wanted to hate but I actually felt sorry for him. He wants the same thing as Jason, to be accepted for who he is, but he looks for acceptance in the wrong places and is really misguided. The two together learn a lot about who they are. Riley realizes he doesn’t have to conform himself to others to be loved and Jason finds an inner strength that he was lacking before. It helps that both guys are on cloud nine when they’re together, too!
As with An Impossible Mate, my main issue was that there was a little too much sex. At least, it was too clustered within the story for me. Also, I would have liked to see Riley grovel a little more to win Jason back. Granted, I won’t deny that the betrayal theme (as portrayed in this book) is a weakness of mine. I’ll even admit that I teared up a little bit when Jason finds out why Riley is really there. There’s something about deception like this that really guts me so I loved how much that aspect of the story pulled out of me.
In the end, though, I think I liked A Liar’s Moon more than An Impossible Mate. This one grabbed onto my heartstrings just enough to be a tad angsty but I also liked the characters a lot. I loved the struggle within Riley and the shyness of Jason. This series is progressing nicely and I can’t wait to see where it goes especially as we’ll be getting the other wolves’ stories.
Overall Impression: I really liked it!
