Blurb: Born into mystery. Shackled to darkness…

Khara has spent centuries discovering everything about the Underworld―except her place in it. But when she’s ripped from her home, solving the riddle of her origins becomes more important than ever. With evil stalking her through the dark alleys of Detroit, she finds salvation from an unlikely source: a group of immortal warriors sworn to protect the city. Khara needs their help to unravel the tangled secrets of who and what she is—secrets many seem willing to kill for. But time is running out, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer necessity binds her to an arrogant fallen angel.

Can their shaky alliance withstand that which threatens her, or will her soul fall victim to the unholy forces that hunt her―those that seek the Unborn?

Review:

When she’s mysteriously taken out of the Underworld, Khara’s dropped in the middle of Detroit with no idea where or why she’s there. Discovered by Drew, she’s almost killed until he realizes she’s his sister. Taking her to meet her other brothers, Khara’s thrust into an unknown world where she learns she’s an Unborn, an angel susceptible to either good or evil influence, which puts her right in the middle of danger. With all the evil hellbent on corrupting her, will she succumb to it all or will she get herself and her brothers killed along the way?

This was an interesting story filled with a ton of action and suspense. I liked that Khara had so many brothers who cared about her wellbeing. More than that, I liked that she wasn’t a whimpering cryer when it came to being in danger or getting hurt. I wouldn’t necessarily call her badass, although I liked the fact that she had no emotions so she wasn’t easily afraid. One thing I loved about this book, though, were the men. Khara’s brothers were definitely badass and an array of clashing personalities. Then there’s Oz, who was a wayward fallen angel, was a treat because he was so arrogant and argumentative. I definitely loved how he stirred things up and how he brought so many unknown emotions out of Khara.

This was a really intriguing story but I had a few issues with it. For one, it aggravated me that the brothers kept saying how ‘strong’ and ‘badass’ Khara was when she was very weak in my eyes up until the end. Sure she was almost emotionless and survived the Underworld for centuries (although none of the pain she supposedly experienced was shown) but she couldn’t fight and she kept getting into situations that she needed help to get out of. To me, that doesn’t show strength, that shows weakness. It wasn’t until the end that she was able to grow a backbone and actually was able to protect herself. I was also confused a time or two about the creatures and such but I’m still wondering… who was the Dark One that took Khara out of the Underworld and WHY did s/he do that?

Still, I won’t deny that I enjoyed this one. Khara wasn’t a very strong heroine but I have no doubt that things will change now. Also, I wouldn’t exactly call this one a romance (but what Urban Fantasy really is so early in the series?) but you can tell there’s some tension between Khara and Oz that I’m sure will turn into something much more soon. If you’re looking for a new UF to try, give this one a go because the underlying plot is definitely worth the read… plus there’s all the hunky brothers!!

Overall Impression: I liked it!
