Audio Review: Darkest Hour Before Dawn by Charlie Cochet

I’d read this book when it first came out, but I am following after each book by listening to the audio, as well. For one, it is such a great series, and you tend to learn things you’d missed while reading…and honestly, I get more out of the story when I can hear them actually speaking and interacting.

In this case, Mark Westfield does a stellar job, again, of keeping in character to point that I have no trouble figuring out who is speaking. Obviously, with Hudson being British, it is much easier to distinguish him from the rest of the group. However, as much as I love Sebastian, his voice was just a bit too submissive and near whiny for me to completely enjoy. He is a huge alpha, and leader at the THIRDS, but with Hudson he turns into a kicked puppy who allows himself to become Hudson’s doormat. I struggled with that part.

I never really bought into the whole reason why Hudson kept Sebastian away. I understand the guilt, but come on…For a smart man, he was quite dense for a very long time…years. But, that is neither here nor there, and was really only a minor aspect of this story. What I love the most is the interaction from the entire team. That, to me, is what makes this series so top notch. As I mentioned at the beginning, I’d read and reviewed the book over a year ago and so for reference, I just went back to see what I’d written, and what a surprise…it was bit different this go round. A couple of the same items appeared, but the voice of Sebastian, which is not clear in the book, made a big difference in my audio review. But regardless, the fact remains that this book, and this series, are incredibly entertaining and I look forward to seeing where we go from here.
