Review:
I’ve really enjoyed this series so far. It is an interesting world where the enhanced are trying to do the right thing going against those who want to put them away out of fear. To do this, the enhanced team members are partnered with non-enhanced officers, and so far, those pairings have been pretty good matches, not only on the job, but off as well. We have met this pair in previous books – Vance being a team member from the beginning, and getting glimpses of Angel here and there throughout.
Unfortunately, these two didn’t seem to fit as well together. I’m not sure if it is the characters themselves, or the story as a whole that caused the problems for me. I felt as though I missed information and needed to go back and reread to better be able to understand and figure out what was going on in this installment. Regardless, I just wasn’t comfortable with these two as a couple, and it felt almost forced with a decidedly noticeable lack of romance between the two, at least from Sam’s side of things. We did learn about some things from Sam’s past that might have explained his behavior somewhat. However, this disconnect prevented me from caring about them together and I found myself skimming pages to get to more interaction with the other characters.
I am still intrigued by the plight of the Enhanced, especially the children and how they are treated/mistreated. I also love how the Team is working to help those kids and make the world a better place for them. So, I’m going to chalk this one up to a fluke and hope the next one is back on track.
