Why Do You Like YA?

What is it about Young Adult books that make you want to read them? What is it that makes you NOT want to read them?

Obviously, we all have different tastes and like to read different things. Personally, I prefer YA books because I like reading about that ‘first love’ and how it shapes a person, the exploration into their sexuality and how they cope with it. Some might argue that first loves never work out so how could you like something when the HEA you ‘get’ doesn’t last. Well, this is why we read fiction! I can be delusional to my heart’s content and believe these two people met at a young age and died a couple at an old age and stayed together all those years. LOL.

Anyway, besides that, when I read m/m, I like seeing those guys come out, whether by accident or just because it’s time. There’s just something about it happening when the characters are still young that makes it so much more better for me than if they’re older.

There are loads of other reasons why I prefer Young Adult like how m/f focuses more on the situations and not the romance in fantasy (Throne of Glass, for example) or how it takes place at school. What can I say? I like my school settings… and this rolls over to movies and TV shows (Teen Wolf!).

Honestly, who can resist Sterek?!

So now that you know what I like, what is it y’all like? Or, I suppose I should ask some people what is it they DON’T like about YA books? Are there reasons you gravitate to them? Or are there reasons you avoid them like the plague?

Comment below because I really want to know!!

  1. I read m/m YA because I have a thing for cute couples and most YA couple are adorable! Another reason is the first love. I’m a sucker for firsts. And I adore it when both boys have no experience and everything is new and they are both experiencing a lot of things together for the first time. Lastly, as a teenager I can connect with teenagers issues, I guess. And a lot of their emotions and feelings feel more real. πŸ˜€

    • Hi, Trisha! I totally agree that YA couples are adorable! I like when they experience things together also, it makes it fun seeing it all play out. Maybe that’s why we like them so much? Because we can connect to their feelings better since we’re young ourselves (I’m 23)?

      • Are you calling me old?!!!

      • Yeah, I think that our age is probably a big thing about our love for YA. Take Gives Light! I adore that series and I am the same age as Skylar was. So I could probably connect with him a lot easier than some. πŸ˜€
I’ve always loved m/m YA couples because they are much cuter than m/f couples (in my opinion anyway). I never read much m/f anyway, but not a lot appeals to me about the genre.

        • Awwww, Gives Light! One of my all time series from last year! That series was amazing! I tried to get one of the girls to read it but no one would 😦 But, I agree, m/m couples are just so much cuter than m/f ones. You and I should gang up on Heather and make her read the Gives Light series πŸ˜€

        • You probably won’t believe me but I actually looked at Gives Light last night since I’m struggling so much with the YA I picked. But it was too long to get finished with and review by Thursday

        • But it reads so fast, HC! I got so caught up in that story that it took me only a few hours to read it! And you know how slow I read!!!

        • It’s toooooo late! I’m already 60% finished with this other book and I didn’t do it for nothing!

  2. In m/m ya, I like the self discovery and learning to accept who you are. In m/f, I prefer it to be action and fast paced and not really focused on the romance
With all that being said, I haven’t read much YA lately.

  3. I’m old and love YA (which sounds creepy, I just realized! ha!) I think I like YA because sometimes, when grown men act badly, I yell at my kindle “GROW UP. You’re an ADULT”. But YA being about younger people, I’m more tolerant of misbehaviors and lack of communication. Also YA books are more contained: school, home, restrictions w/ parents, etc. And there’s something about those restrictions that make you focus on the basics of the feelings between the 2 mc’s. Does that make sense?

    • My favorite YA:

M/F – “Easy” by Tammara Weber (though some people say it’s NA), “Pushing the Limits” by Katie McGarry

M/M – “Superhero” by Eli Easton, “Catch My Breath” by MJ O’Shea, “Love Lessons” by Heidi Cullinan, “Openly Straight” by Bill Konigsberg

      • Love Lessons!!! That’s the other Heidi book I need to read. Was trying to remember and it just wasn’t coming to me.

    • That totally makes sense and it’s so true, Susan! ‘Contained’ is definitely a great word to describe them πŸ™‚ I’ve read Easy and loved it!! I’ve been meaning to try other Tammara Weber books but haven’t had a chance too. I’m going to check out the other ones you mentioned!

  4. I think I am just too OLD to enjoy reading about the ultra young crowd. Makes me feel all pervy.
