I’m Stunned! Blown Away! Traumatized! Astonished! Bewildered! In a state of freaking shock!
Call it what you will, you name the adjective, but that’s exactly how I was feeling while reading this incredible book…and then, when you get to that ENDING!!!! OMFG!!! Seriously, this is one of the most extreme psychological thrillers I’ve ever read, and one of the most brilliantly descriptive with all its graphic goriness. My mind was going with “Silence of the Lambs” meets “SAW,” sandwiched between a somewhat angsty and dysfunctional MM romance. Fooking awesome!!!
Let’s be real here for a moment. If you love a good suspenseful horror story, and the graphic violence is not a hard limit for you, then you will love this book. If you think you know who the killer is, because yes, the author expertly tries to lead you to believe it’s one person, and the evidence all leads that to be true, but you know it’s a lead in, and you know it’s a twist meant to throw you off the real killer’s trail, then you will love this book. But Holy Schnitzel Batman…I did not see that twist coming, or the next one. OMG!!! I loved this book!
It was intense, baby, capital I.N.T.E.N.S.E.
I so want to give this review justice. I so want to tell you how it ends and who the bad guy really is, but that would just be mean. This is a book meant to be read without any previous knowledge or spoilers besides knowing that it’s harsh, and violent, and not for everyone, but it is so worth every penny and every minute spent staring at the words with your mouth hanging open and with a look of pure unadulterated shock on your face. Move over Stephen King, Daniel A. Kaine is in the house!
Alex is a newly minted homicide detective investigating a gruesome, obviously deranged, serial killer. Vince is his on again-off again journalist boyfriend. On again-off again because Vince can’t help but stick his nose into Alex’s police business…and then write about it in the paper. I felt so bad for both of these guys. It’s so obvious they love each other, but they are like water and oil with their respective careers constantly at battle. I think Alex was a little out of line with his treatment of Vince but, these are grown men who needed a little more trust in that relationship to make it work. We eagerly watch their conflict hoping they can finally figure out how to make their relationship gel while in the midst of a horrific and suspenseful murder investigation. I never had any doubts that they would last…I just didn’t expect it to happen the way it did. Whoa!
So in closing, I highly recommend this deliciously written gore-fest for those who want a suspense filled mystery wrapped around two men desperately trying to solve an intense case all while hoping they can fix their dysfunctional relationship. It’s everything I never knew I wanted in my MM romance story. I can’t wait to see if Daniel A. Kaine decides to expand on this book; it could definitely happen. No, it does not end on a cliff hanger, but yes, he left it open just enough that if he chose to write another book, he would already have a captive audience cheering him on, and I, for one, would be the first person in line.
Overall Impression: It was AMAZING
