Blurb: Stranded on a moon smelling of rotten eggs with tunnel ghouls attempting to eat him, Captain Tanner N’tirant meets a legend and finds the truth is a lot hotter than the myth. A scorned mother landed him on this rock, and while sleeping with her son wasn’t the finest decision he ever made, trusting Denzantalen, a gene-spliced hybrid thought to be extinct, might be the best decision of his life.

Review:

When Tanner’s plane crash lands on an unknown planet, he doesn’t have much hope in surviving. Especially when he realizes he’s been sabotaged and the mother of his ex-lover wants him dead. Stuck with a ship that’s damaged and injured himself, Tanner is sorta saved by an unexpected guest: Denzantalen, a creature that was supposed to be extent long ago. Den promises to help Tanner if he’ll get him off the cursed planet but can Tanner trust a being that has no problems feasting on flesh?

I found this story to be very intriguing. I loved that it dealt with things like gene-splicing and how Tanner seemed to be engineered with advanced organs and such. Not to mention I liked that Tanner got himself into such trouble because he shacked up with the wrong guy.

Unfortunately, I felt like there was too much to the story to fit into such a tiny book. For the first third of it, I was completely confused. I felt like everything Tanner said or thought was one big jumbled mess and I couldn’t follow his thoughts at all. That could also be because there were so many foreign words that had no translation to them. It wasn’t until Den came into the picture that I started to understand things but by that point, it was too far into the story to really pick up.

I liked Den and Tanner as characters but they weren’t very developed so it was hard to connect with them. I was also a little uncomfortable with Den’s need to feed on fear and what Tanner allowed him to do to sate that hunger. I was actually a bit shocked and a little confused, to be honest. If you read the story, I think you’ll understand the scene I’m talking about.

In the end, though, this story had a lot of potential. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it were more of a novella or novel length but as it is, I liked some parts but had trouble in others. I adored the ship and there are a few funny moments around that. I would have loved to see how Tanner and Den get off the planet and what they do next so I hope Ms. Garcia considers expanding this story into something longer so we can explore all that.

Overall Impression: It was okay

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for a fair and honest review.*
