He wrapped her in his arms, knowing it was the key to settling her down, and pulled her against him, kissing her passionately. He slowly traced her lips with his tongue, and when she parted her lips in response, he took advantage by moving his tongue in to mate with hers.
She felt a jolt of energy run through her body and grabbed his shoulders, clinging to him. Suddenly she wasn’t certain if her legs could support her, as she stood beside the wagon, pressing her body to his. Whatever drove her crazy about this man, when he kissed her, her insides turned to mush.
Tom cupped her backside in his hands pulling her against him. He knew she would probably want to wait until bedtime to consummate the marriage, but with her obvious flightiness, he didn’t think that was a good idea. “Let me put the horses in their stalls, and I’ll show you around.” Show you my bedroom.
He worked quickly, getting the horses unhitched from the wagon and rubbing them down. Keeping his eyes on her face, every time she looked ready for flight, he’d hurry over and kiss her again until she had that glazed look on her face, and then he’d hurry even faster to get the horses taken care of. It took him twice as long as it should have to unhitch the team because he kissed her so many times.
When he was finished, he walked to her and pulled her into his arms, kissing her again until she couldn’t support her weight with her own legs. He scooped her into his arms and carried her toward the house, thinking of nothing but getting her into his bed. He’d known from her letters there would be something special between them, but this level of feeling was beyond anything he’d dreamed of.
She stared up at his face, knowing she needed to try one more time before she just went along with him. “I think there’s been a misunderstanding…” she began, and he pressed his lips to hers, standing with her cradled against him, right there on the front porch of his house.
“Don’t worry about anything. I’ll take care of you,” he whispered, opening the door and carrying her inside. He showed her nothing, just carried her straight to the bedroom, laying her on the bed and following her down onto it, propping himself on one elbow beside her. “You’re even more beautiful than I imagined you’d be.” He traced her cheek with his index finger, still having a hard time believing that this beautiful woman was his wife, and he had every right to kiss her and touch her as much as he wanted.
Julia stared up into his face, surprised that he thought she was beautiful. No one had ever said that about her before. “I’m not beautiful,” she protested. He was beautiful though. She’d never seen a more handsome man in her life. He was tall, with dark hair and brown eyes. His eyelashes seemed to go on forever, and his mouth. Her eyes dropped to the mouth that seemed to be kissing her endlessly. It looked hard and chiseled, but she knew better. His lips were soft against hers and oh so loving.
He moved closer to her on the bed, his lips covering hers once more. His kisses made her feel as if her brain could no longer function, and she was happy to give into the bliss of not having to worry about every little thing.
She kissed him back, using her tongue as he’d taught her, wrapping her arms around his hard shoulders. He’d said he was a rancher, so he must work hard every day, making those muscles bulge. She moved her hands around to the front of his shirt, slowly unbuttoning it, because never in her life had she wanted to touch anyone as much as she wanted to touch his bare skin. It was so hot, but she just couldn’t make herself care.
Tom was startled to feel her fingers unbuttoning his shirt, but he didn’t say a word, because he certainly didn’t want her to stop. He moved his hands to the back of her dress and slowly liberated each button from its hole. Once he was finished, his hands roamed over her back, wondering if it would startle her if he pushed her dress off his shoulders. She certainly didn’t seem like she was shy.
Part of Julia’s mind knew she should protest when he unbuttoned her dress, but she didn’t want to. She wanted what he was doing to her more than she’d ever wanted anything, even to teach.
Before she knew what had happened, she was lying beside him totally nude and he was wearing only his pants. He’d even removed his boots during her glaze of passion. Her hands reached out to stroke his bare chest, toying with the light covering of hair and his flat nipples. At his groan, her eyes met his, and she gently rolled the nipples between her fingers, thrilled that he was enjoying what she did to him.
Tom couldn’t believe how wild in bed his little wife was turning out to be. She’d claimed to be a schoolteacher, but no teacher he’d ever known would act this way. He cupped her bare breasts in his hands, his thumbs flicking over the nipples, watching her face carefully to see what she enjoyed and what she didn’t. As far as he could tell she liked it all.

Rachel moved to get up and fell back on the bed. “Oh, dang, I’m sore. How am I going to work?”
“You’re not going to work.”
She raised her eyebrows. “So the men will go hungry all day?”
“No. Mac can take over for a day or two. And I think Amelia could be quite a help to him. You, sweetheart, will stay in bed for a couple of days.”
She bristled and her brows climbed higher at his high-handedness. “I know you’re the foreman, but to my recollection, the foreman was not the cook’s boss.”
His lips moved in that lazy smile that set her body to thrumming again. “As the foreman, it’s my job to make sure the ranch runs well. One of those responsibilities is to see the men are fed. You, darlin’, are in no shape to cook proper meals.”
When had she granted him permission to call her by honey, darlin’, and sweetheart? It seemed he believed his rescue gave him familiar rights. Or perhaps it was them spending the night together in the same bed. Once more, heat rose to her cheeks.
As much as she hated to allow Rusty to win one over on her, she knew he was right. It would be impossible for her to cook three meals today with how she felt. “Since breakfast should have already been started, you need to—”
“Ma? Where are you?” Will’s voice had Rusty jumping from the bed, his eyes quickly roaming over himself, patting himself down.
“What are you doing?”
“Making sure everything is covered.”
Her jaw dropped. “What? Why wouldn’t everything be covered?”
“Just making sure, darlin’.”

After Matt checked in with the sheriff, he went to the boarding house. The Phifer women were serving supper to their boarders, and it smelled good enough to make Matt’s stomach whimper.
Lena Mae patted his arm. “Since poor Ivan isn’t here, why don’t you sit in his place and join us?”
“Don’t mind if I do.” Matt grinned at Beth in spite of her glare and took the chair Lena Mae had indicated.
Davey sat at his right. “Did you find Grandpa Ivan?”
“Not yet, but I aim to.” Oh, man, his nose sent more perk up messages to his stomach. Lena Mae must serve the best food in the state.
The other boarders, three women and two men, expressed their opinions on what had happened to Ivan. After the meal was cleared away and the boarders had gathered in the parlor or gone to their own rooms, Matt asked to speak to Lena Mae and Beth alone. Lena Mae invited him to her private sitting room at the back of the house and Beth followed. He closed the door behind them to insure no one else overheard.
“It’s been a tiring day. Is all this necessary?” Beth rubbed at her neck.
Matt figured running a boarding house this size about ran her ragged. He wanted to massage those tired neck and shoulder muscles for her but she’d likely chop off his hands if he tried. Instead, he pulled out the medal he’d found in the dirt. “You know if this is one of Ivan’s?”
Both women peered at it.
Beth used her apron and polished the dust from it. “I think so. Davey would know. Ivan told him about each one several times.” She stepped to the door and called her son, who came running.
Matt knelt on one knee and held the medal out. “Did Ivan have one of these?”
Davey nodded. “That’s the one he got for stopping the men who tried to shoot the king.” He fingered the medal and explained as he must have heard Ivan tell the story.
“That’s the first time, when King Rudolph was all right. There was a big ceremony in the palace—that’s what Ivan called the castle—and the king gave that and some more stuff to Ivan. It’s supposed to have a ribbon on it at the top. Red for valor. That means bravery.”
Matt reclaimed the medal and stood. “Thanks, Davey. I thought so, but I’d only seen it once and wasn’t sure.”
“Does that mean you know where Grandpa Ivan is?”
“Yes, but I couldn’t get in to see him. I have an appointment on Monday with the man who runs the place.”
Lena Mae went all fluttery again and moved her hand to her collar. “You suspect foul play, don’t you? Do you think he’s being held against his will?”
Matt stood. “Pretty sure he is, but I can’t prove it. If I get the sheriff and take a posse roaring in there, I’m afraid they’ll kill Ivan.” If they hadn’t already.
Lena Mae pulled a handkerchief from her sleeve and dabbed at her eyes. “Poor Ivan. Such a sweet man. I do hope he’s all right.”
Beth put her arm around her mother. “There’s nothing we can do, Mama. Let Mr. Petrov and the sheriff handle it.”
“I suppose you’re right, but I can’t help worrying about the dear man.” Lena Mae dabbed her eyes again.
“Well, I thank you ladies for a fine supper.” Matt turned toward the door.
Lena Mae put a hand on his arm. “There’s a picnic social after church tomorrow. Most of the folks in town will be there and there’ll be food aplenty. Why don’t you join us?”
Matt almost laughed at the horror-stricken look on Beth’s face. Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. In spite of his best efforts, a grin crept onto his face. “Don’t mind if I do.”
He tipped his hat and left, chuckling as he walked toward his shabby room over the saloon.

“Are you cold,” Deke asked.
“No, just scared,” she said. She bit her lip. “Please, Deke, wash away the memories of that awful man. Show me how a good man would treat a woman. Kiss me, make this fear go away.”
He stared at her, his emerald eyes gazing at her, flickering with what looked like uncertainty. He opened his mouth, and she licked her lips.
“Oh, blazes,” he said, as his mouth lowered to hers, and he covered her lips with his own. He tasted of apple, and a minty spice, and his lips plundered her. Ravaging her mouth, claiming her like she belonged to him. This was no schoolboy’s blundering attempt, but a man who knew how to kiss her silly.
Only instead of satisfying her curiosity, she craved more. She needed more as she rubbed her fingers down the rock hard muscles in his back. A moan built in her throat as his tongue opened her mouth, and he pushed his way inside, causing her to gasp. She’d never experienced anything like this before, and the strength to resist seemed to leave her body. Her legs began to wobble, and his hands tilted her back, his arms holding her, supporting her as her breathing quickened, and she felt faint.
An ache began to build in the center of her body, and his hand slid across her breast. She didn’t want him to ever cease. She needed him to touch her. To make her into a woman. A woman who knew how to please a man.
His lips left hers. “Stop.”
Slowly, she opened her eyes to gaze up at him. Her body burned like a fire had been started, and she hungered to be consumed in its flames.
“No, don’t quit. What you’re doing is getting rid of the bad memories and feels so good,” she gasped, still in his arms staring into his eyes. “You make me feel beautiful.”
Not wanting this to end, she reached up, her fingers touching her lips and her body craving something she didn’t understand. There was more, and she needed to experience it all. She needed Deke like she needed her next breath.
He raised her up until she was standing and then pushed her away from him, his strong arms out straight, putting distance between them. His breathing was quick and shallow, and his eyes were wild with an emotion she’d never seen before.
“No, I can’t. That’s as far as it goes. You’re a child. You’re innocent. And your papa would not have approved.”
A child? He thought of her as a child? Did he not see the woman inside of her that was bursting for someone to release? Couldn’t he see she was a woman fully grown?
“My papa is dead. We’re alone, and I want to know what it feels like to be a woman. I want you to be the man who makes me into a woman.” Ruby stepped toward him, needing him to take her into his arms once again.
“Oh, no, not going to happen with this man. I would be disrespecting your papa. I’m not having sex with a child.”
“Stop calling me a child,” she declared, her overwrought feelings rushing at her.
“That’s what you are.”
Like a splash of cold water had been thrown on her, shivers racked her body. She no longer had this intense urge for him to make her into a woman.
Tingles of rage crawled up her spine, and she went hot all over. First, she’d been almost raped, and now, the one man she desired was refusing her. She wanted to smash something, she wanted to hit him, she wanted to do something to make him hurt like she was hurting.
“Damn it, Deke Culver. I’m asking you to take me, and you’re being all respectful. That’s not what I want,” she fairly screamed at him.

Mark shook his head, fire in his eyes. “One week, Eve. One week and now I can’t imagine my life without you. I love you.”
Her heart melted and shattered at the same time.
“You’re a pastor,” she protested. “You’re good and moral and spiritual. The people of Cold Springs would never accept someone like me as your wife. Never!”
“I have as much of a right to love who I want as they do,” he said. “Each one of them is as human as you are, some of them more so. God does not create us to be perfect, passionless statues. I am a man, regardless of my job, and I love you.”
He kissed her again before she could protest. The wonder of it had her breathing in shallow gasps, her heart thundering against her ribs. Mark was a man. He was hot like a man and smelled of salty skin and winter wind like a man. She wanted him more than any man she’d ever known. His mouth exploring hers and his body ready for her was more than she could fight against. She was too exhausted from holding her head above water to resist for another moment. Her heart made its decision and she pressed into him.
He must have felt her give in. He backed away from the bureau, taking her with him. Between kisses he reached up her back to undo the row of buttons that she’d worked so hard to fasten earlier. They came apart easily for him. Without letting herself think, she shrugged out of her bodice as he undid the fastenings at her waist and let her dress and petticoat fall together to the floor.
It was madness, but she was beyond caring. She pushed Mark’s jacket off his shoulders and tugged his shirt out of the waist of his pants. It had been years since she’d undressed a man, but she still knew the most effective way to do it. He attempted to unhook her corset as she pushed his suspenders off his shoulders and lifted his shirt over his head. In the end he gave up and let her undress him and then herself.
He moved to yank the covers on the bed down as she tossed her chemise and drawers aside. They met in the middle of the bed, between cool sheets that smelled faintly of roses.
“I really do love you,” he said in a rough voice, pulling her into his arms. “I need you to know that.”
His naked body was everything she had imagined it would be and she hummed low in her throat as her skin slid against his. She ran her hand up the firm muscle of his side, down across his back to hold his backside. He let out a breath of appreciation and strained toward her to kiss her.
