Blurb:  Please note, this book was originally a short story written in 2010. This version is inspired by that short story and is a complete re-write.

Kian has crossed over from his world to ours to seek revenge. His plan is to kill the monster who murdered his Uncle. The same monster who used magic to escape to our world and is hiding here and growing in strength.

Regan Campbell is a hunter of Demons. The first son, of a first son, he is the one who protects this world from the monsters that no one else knows are here.

When Kian reaches this world, he knows Regan is the perfect man to fight alongside him, but Regan trusts no one.

It isn’t until they are facing death and a terrible evil that will be let loose, that Regan finally realises he can trust another…his fated partner, Kian.

Review: We jump right into the story with a minimum of world building. Regan is a hunter of demons here on Earth. He comes from a long line of hunters, it’s all he knows.
Kian must cross from his plane into Earth to kill a “demon” that killed his uncle. He needs Regan to do this.

Besides being the perfect hunting partner, Regan is also Kian’s mate, and he must bond with Regan in order to vanquish the demon. The only problem, Regan has no intention of “bonding” with anyone. Not long term. And for Kian, there is only long term or there is nothing, in other words, death.

Regan agrees to fight with Kian, but only because Kian doesn’t reveal the entire truth of the situation. They kill the “demon” but still Kian remains mute as to the import of their time together.

Fortunately, Kian’s friend helps Regan to see the light and he returns to Kian’s side before all is lost.

**

You can tell by reading this that it was a short story expanded. There are just enough bits of world building to explain the necessary ingredients, but not a lot of words are spent explaining the nature of Kian’s world or telling much about either man’s pasts.

The bulk of the story is their “hunting,” and it moves quickly. R.J. Scott is a very talented writer, and it shows in how she can tell such a big story in a few pages. However, I was left wanting. There was just enough here to intrigue me about these dual worlds and the nature of being bonded that I was disappointed when it ended.

The ending was confusing as well. Our MCs are together, the demon killed, but then there is a bit more – likely leading us into Darach’s story (Book 2) – but it felt out of place here.
I’m assuming that by reading the entire Trilogy, all the puzzle pieces together make a lovely “whole”, but as a single entity, this book alone was a little confusing and somewhat unsatisfying.

I’m looking forward to reading the next installments and trusting that the very talented Ms. Scott will keep filling in the details of this intriguing new world she has shown us.

Overall Impression: I liked it

*I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in return for a fair and honest review.*
