Blurb:  Eren Anderson is a freak among freaks. At 17 years old, he doesn’t fit in with his peers in the tiny town of All Hallows and despite being born into it, he most certainly doesn’t fit in among The Order of Our Mother, the secret nature worshipping society that has harnessed the ability cast spells and believes vampires are not only real, but their deadliest enemies. Eren is turned into a vampire after an attack by the local coven master, but that is the least of his worries…

In a post-Twilight world, “The Red Sun Rises” is a YA novel intended to give vampires their bite back but it should not be read as simply another vampire novel. “The Red Sun Rises” is a story about growing up, responsibility, falling in love, facing your fears and taking fate into your own hands.

Review: The Red Sun Rises is a perfect young adult paranormal m/m romance novel. Wow, that was a mouthful! Let me break it down for you.

This book would fall into the young adult category for several reasons, the least of which is that the main characters, Eren and Corbijn, are both on the cusp of adulthood. Eren lives in the community of All Hallows but doesn’t fit in. His father is one of the city elders, practitioners of magic, and all his friends are able to cast spells. Eren, however, is an anomaly. Unable to cast, he has never quite fit in. So, feelings of inadequacy, trying to figure out where you belong in the world… Yep, definitely young adult. But that’s not where it ends!

The Red Sun Rises is also a paranormal novel. While Eren resides on the practitioner side of the line, Corbijn is on the vampire side. All his life Eren was told that vampires existed and that was the reason for his curfew and the restrictions, as well as the reason for the existence of All Hallow’s practitioners; to protect the townspeople from the vampires. Like any good paranormal novel, the whole story and the world unfolds slowly yet succinctly. Kinnaird builds a fantastical world, truly unique and engaging.

Throw in the m/m romance portion of the story and we have the trifecta of awesomesauce! Eren and Corbijn are supposed to be enemies, yet the minute they see one another, they know that will never be the case. Corbijn has actually been sent to protect Eren from the storm that is coming his way. Little does Eren know that he is actually the key to fulfilling a prophecy that will bring about the end of the evil vampire leader and bring their town back into balance.

And of course, we can’t forget that this is a young adult story so there are plenty of coming of age moments as well; there’s the building of the love and relationship between Corbijn and Eren, Eren’s realization of his place in the world and his own strength and the morphing of Eren’s relationships with his father and his best friend.

All in all, if you like young adult paranormal m/m romance books, or any part of that, you will love The Red Sun Rises!

Overall Impression: I really liked it
