Blurb: Twenty-year-old Tarquin is smart, tactless, and braver than he knows. He’s also been Mage of the Realm of Kelor for two years, taking the title from his mother after she died protecting Kelor from a terrible threat.
While on a quest to heal his dying brother, Tarquin is attacked by a horrific, flesh-eating monster. He’s saved by an enigmatic and mute young soldier, cursed with a terrifying form that conceals the heart of a knight. There’s an almost instant attraction between the two men, but no time to explore it. The monster’s attack is the harbinger of a new invasion.
With Kelor helpless, the realm’s only hope lies with Tarquin. As Mage of the Realm, he alone can sacrifice himself, the way his mother did, in exchange for unimaginably powerful magic. He’s prepared to give up his life to defeat the coming evil, but before the battle is over, he’ll be faced not just with his own death, but the death of everyone he cares about.
Including the monster he’s come to love.
Tarquin’s on a quest to save his dying brother when he’s attacked by horrific monsters. The only way he survives is when another monster shows up to save him. However, this monster is different from the others and Tarquin can’t help but feel a kinship with the guy he now calls Five and is determined to build a friendship with Five. But with a war looming and as Mage of the Realm, Tarquin’s their only hope in winning the war. Unfortunately, to do that Tarquin has to offer an unbelievable sacrifice, will he be willing to make that sacrifice or will everything be for nothing?
Okay, that recap wasn’t the best but I absolutely adored this story! I loved, loved, loved the fact that Tarquin wasn’t scared of Five (the monster who saved him) and instead, worried for him. It was interesting to see how Five reacted to Tarquin and the peculiar relationship they had. I loved seeing Tarquin’s feelings for Five develop even though he didn’t realize that was what was happening. I also liked that Tarquin could understand Five so easily when Five never said a word. Five was so badass while Tarquin was so selfless and willing to sacrifice himself to save his people. I just loved these two together!!!
In the end, this was a phenomenal story. I really enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded and seeing Tarquin and Five’s unique relationship. I also loved exploring this world and seeing how Tarquin played such a huge role in it. I hope the author considers writing more in this world because I definitely want to see Tarquin and Five again!
Overall Impression: It was AMAZING!
