Blurb: The galaxy’s a dangerous place. Best not to travel it alone.
It’s been over a century since the AIs rose up and attacked, driving humans from Earth and leaving them scattered across the galaxy. Humanity survives, but always fearful of the technology that allows them travel among the stars, never knowing when it may turn against them once more.
An interstellar fugitive.
For Jaime Bashir, born with the ability to communicate telepathically with computers, his gifts are more of a curse. They also make him a target. On the run, he finds himself among a starship crew, one transporting a mysterious cargo. Even more intriguing is Rylan, the muscled guard watching his every move. Jaime has no reason to trust him, but nowhere else to turn.
A disgraced ex-soldier.
Rylan Slate is looking to leave his past behind. Joining a crew of smugglers is one way to do it. But capturing Jaime is both an opportunity and a danger. He starts out as a prisoner, but then becomes something more, testing loyalties in ways Rylan never expected. Will regaining his honor mean betraying Jaime?
This book is was intriguing, I absolutely loved the world that the author created. It had a feel of Terminator to it, like how it could have been… in space (lol) so that had me hooked from the beginning!! Now, it’s nothing like Terminator, it just has the feel with the AIs rising up. Anyway, it’s all about the after math of really that and how the world(s) have changed and don’t rely as much on AIs to do their work, because they took over at one point and plunged humanity into darkness. As a weird result, there are humans like Jaime who can communicate telepathically with computers, coax them into doing their bidding. Jaime is well aware of how valuable he can be but since he’s on the run with a huge bounty on his head, he knows he can’t let himself fall into the wrong hands. Cue Rylan, a disgraced soldier who’s with a crew of smugglers. Rylan takes Jaime onboard but before they know it, Jaime becomes a part of the crew. Unfortunately, what the crew is smuggling is something no one expected and something only Jaime can help with and possibly at the cost of his life. Will he be able to survive the trouble that’s heading his way and will he be able to trust any of the crew when a traitor is in their mist?
Oh, my god. I loved this book so much!!! I was drawn in right from the start. I loved how Jaime was fleeing for his life and he finds Rylan, a man with a metal arm. Things go crazy, though, and Jaime uses his abilities to try and escape, which is entirely impossible with Rylan. I just loved that connection between them right from the start. They have such great chemistry, I could just feel it oozing off the pages. I loved that Jaime sorta acted like he was this little innocent and sheltered guy but in reality, he’s not. He’s probably the most deadly because he could convince a ship to kill all the passengers. At the same time, Rylan is so fierce and strong and with Jaime, protective. He’s also the silent type so the two of them together just about melted my heart with their differences. Also, I found Rylan so endearing. When Jaime was a prisoner, he refused to take advantage of him, so he has some honor. He even stopped in the middle of their first love scene to bother the captain to make sure Jaime was not a prisoner anymore. It was both hilarious and endearing!
I really, really loved this book. I mean, it had exactly the type of things I generally love in a novel but my biggest issue was there was so much sex. Granted, it didn’t happen until probably halfway into the story but once it did, I felt like they were screwing like bunnies. A few scenes were good but then I just started to skim them… plus, Jaime is a total slut. He has no issues with using his sexual prowess to get him to the places he wants to go, that’s actually how he escaped his bounty hunter. He acts all innocent and then seduces you.
In the end, I really loved the book. I adored the characters and the motley crew that was on the spaceship that Jaime ended up on. If there was a little less sex, this would have been 5 stars because there’s a good amount of action and romance in this one, which is what I’m always craving. Definitely give this one a go if you’re looking for something fast-paced, smexy and a whole lotta entertaining! I’m really looking forward to the sequel!
Overall Impression: I really liked it!
