A Blogger Girl Q&A with Susan Mac Nicol + Giveaway

TBG: Hi, Susan! So great to have you on the blog! We just have a few questions for you to answer šŸ™‚

Where did you come up with the idea for a Withinner and will we see more real time with Taliesin? He was one naughty, but HOT, sorcerer.

Susan: Oh Taliesin is quite a character, isn’t he? Rough, tough and sexy…and dangerous and we all know we love a bad boy  To be honest, I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of each one of us having an alter ego, a dark and a light side, two halves of the same person. So when I started thinking about this book, I conjured up this dark man living in another time as Quinn’s very own ā€˜magyckal’ presence. The ā€˜Withinner’ name was simply how I thought of him-Taliesin always lived within another person and hey presto, the term ā€˜Withinner’ was coined.

TBG:Ā Does Taliesin have the ability to love and live a real life in his world? With his being at Quinn’s beck and call, I can see how that might be an issue. He seems to like to share Quinn’s men (past tense, of course) so I wonder about his own love life, separate from Quinn.

Susan: Absolutely. He’s a bit of a hound dog, bisexual too, especially when it comes to the Fey attraction. He is a distinct real person in his own time in the sixth century, in the time of Merlin and King Arthur, and has his own life. He lives in an isolated stone cottage on the wild Welsh coastline, close to a village, enough to go down to the local tavern and find a willing bar maid or man to ravage. He has an extremely protective nature towards Quinn, and as such, he wants to share in his life and especially in his sex life 

TBG:Ā Was the phosphorescent in the water with Cade a water sprite in disguise? If so, will they make themselves known to him? And will Cade have the ability to change forms once he understands his fey powers?

Susan: Ahh, you’re making me give away all my secrets in Book 2. But yes, there are Sprites in the Hampstead Heath ponds. And yes, Cade gets to know them although not in a way you’d expect and that bit may make you shed a tear or two. Form changing isn’t something I’ve factored into Cade’s story as Sprites are essentially human form but with powerful abilities. But you’ll see how that all works out when you read book 2 *grins syly*

TBG: I understand that Quinn is worried about Cade and his unknown fey powers and what other’s will do, but in what universe does he believe that hiding all that from Cade will work out in his favor?

Susan: Quinn is a typical, arrogant Alpha male. He thinks what he does is just cause, and his love and fierce desire to protect the man he adores above all else tends to colour his judgement. He does mellow though in Book 2 but it’s one event above all others that causes him pain and grief that makes him realise he needs to let Cade develop and that he can no longer keep him in the dark.

TBG:Ā Are there more than two books in this series, or is this it?

Susan: This is it -for now. I have a burning desire to write Taliesin’s story, something more historical and saga driven, so that is always something for me to consider. I have a friend who is a Bard and a Druid and he studied Taliesin in depth as part of his studies, so I know where to go to when I need the history and fact bit. I’d love to see Talisin find his true love, and yes, it will be a man.

TBG:Ā Double Alchemy is a total 180, a complete departure from the first book I’d read of yours, Saving Alexander. Where do you come up with your ideas and influences?

Susan: I have this strange yen to keep writing out of the norm, to constantly challenge myself to see what happens. I don’t write for the market, I write what feels good and what I enjoy. So yes, the paranormal genre is, as you say, a complete turnaround from my usual. I have this fascination with the occult and witchcraft in particular (being a Wiccan myself) and with the story of Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General, on my doorstep here in the county of Essex, I thought I’d combine my love with the M/M genre with the paranormal.

TBG:Ā Have you written any of genres besides gay romance?

Susan: I have written two previous books in my Starlight trilogy, which were M/F. Cassandra by Starlight and Together in Starlight were the first two books I ever wrote. I loved it, and Bennett and Cassie’s story was simply something that had to come out and be told. It was written based on my fixation with a young British actor called Benedict Cumberbatch. Then I found the M/M genre and fell completely in love and that’s where I am now.

TBG:Ā What exciting things do we have to look forward to in future, can you share?

Susan: I’m writing a six book series called ā€˜Men in London’ which tells the different stories of various men coming together in a restaurant called Galileo’s in Soho. Each story is unique but the restaurant, and the first two characters in the series, Gideon and Eddie, will be a common thread in all. Each book will set up the characters for the next.

Gideon and Eddie’s book is called me ā€˜Love Me Senseless’. Gideon Kent is an award winning chef and owner of Galileo’s on his way to cooking stardom. Then a house fire and tragedy leave him with the inability to smell and taste. He’s a purist when it comes to his craft and decides he can no longer cook and create signature dishes. Now he simply manages the restaurant. Then along comes Eddie Tripp, another younger and up and coming chef star on the horizon, lauded for great things. Of course there is conflict, passion, envy and lust and one by one, both of these men’s defences fall.

TBG: Thanks so much for coming on The Blogger Girls!

AboutĀ Double Alchemy

Double AlchemyPowerful yet tormented warlock Quinn Fairmont must initiate the silver-eyed Cade Mairston into the world of witchfinders, Withinners, and what can happen when two men fall truly, madly, deeply in love.

THE WORLD IN SHADOW

In modern London,, there lurks a warlock. Quinn Fairmont. Dangerous, powerful, tortured. Sharing his body with the soul of an ancient Welsh sorcerer, Quinn is never alone—and never wholly himself. He fights against all those who would exploit his kind. He also takes pleasure where he can find it.

In the forest of Hampstead Heath, Quinn’s hometown, Cade Mairston appears like a waking dream. Lithe, lean and silver-eyed, he evokes feelings in Quinn unlike any other: along with lust comes true affection, immediate and shocking. Cade is clearly more than he seems. And yet, though a man of the world, Cade knows nothing of warlocks, witchfinders or Withinners. He knows nothing of what he is, what he might be, what he might feel. For him, the story is just beginning, and magyck, peril and passion await.

Roped In Blog Tour: Marie Sexton Interviews L.A. Witt + Giveaway

Marie Sexton Interviews L.A. Witt

Hello, everybody. Marie and Lori here, talking about our upcoming release, Roped In, a hot little “opposites attract” novella about a rodeo roper and an animal rights activist. Today, I (Marie) decided to hold Lori down and force her to answer a few questions.Ā

Marie: All the horse info in Roped In came from you (since I know nothing). Tell us about your experiences/history with horses.Ā

Lori: I learned to ride around the same time I learned to walk. My very first horse show ribbon is dated a few months before my third birthday. Granted it was a leadline class (where my mom led the horse), but I’d been riding on my own before that point. I distinctly remember being annoyed that my mom had to lead the horse, actually, because I could handle him just fine on my own. My family raised Morgans for most of my life, and I had my own show horse from the time I was about twelve. So…you could say I’ve spent my fair share of time working with horses, which definitely helped pave the way for some of the scenes in Roped In.Ā

Marie: Our story features an animal rights activist who frequently protests at rodeos. Which side of that protest would you be on? Alternately, have you ever been tied up by an animal rights activist? Or would you rather do the tying?Ā

Lori: While I’m totally on board with things like horse shows, I tend to agree with animal rights activists who oppose rodeos. I’m very much opposed to things like bronco and bull-riding because of how the animals are treated, and I’m not a big fan of roping events for the same reason. For the record, I am opposed to maltreatment of animals at horse shows. The things they do to Tennessee Walkers, for example, are appalling. I’m fine with showing horses as long as the animals are not mistreated. Ā

As for tying or being tied, well, that depends on the animal rights activist. šŸ˜‰

Marie: Name one irrational phobia you have.

Lori: Ladders. I discovered this particular phobia while I was thirty feet up on a ladder, so that was…unpleasant.

Marie: Where would you go for your next vacation if money and time were no issue? Ā

Lori: Easter Island. I’ve been trying to go there for years, and just haven’t been able to make it happen yet. In the meantime, though, I’m rather enjoying making frequent trips to London. Normally, I’m not a fan of big cities, but I’m quite fond of that one.

Marie: If you could solve one historical mystery or unsolved crime, which would it be?

Lori: Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

And bringing things back to our book, Roped In: what was your favorite thing, either about the story itself, or about writing it?Ā

Well, I’m never going to shy away from a story that lets me write about horses to a certain extent, because… horses. This one was especially cool because it was my first time co-writing with Marie, which was insanely fun!

There you have it! The things you undoubtedly most want to know about Lori. Keep following our blog tour to see what happens when Lori turns the tables on me.

And check out Roped In. ☺

A Blogger Girl Q&A with K.A. Mitchell, Character Interview + Giveaway

Interview Banner

Susan: Where do you find your inspiration for your plots and characters? Are any of them based on real life experiences and people?

K.A: Hi. Thanks for having me on your blog. Almost all my stories come from characters. Sometimes I see a picture or a person or hear a song and a character pops into my head and starts telling me about himself and what he wants. Sometimes I have a situation that I want to write about, something I hear about that deserves a happy ending. The idea for Peter and Quinn’s relationship ummm issues came out of a situation–though in that case, the Peter-inspiration said he was straight after twenty years with the same guy. Last I heard, the Quinnspiration was very happy.

I like creating stuff out of my brain’s squishy bits. It’s fun when I’m working without any kind of map, just letting the characters drive.

Susan: You have three series; two based on the states of Ohio and Florida, and one on the city of Baltimore. Did you visit each location for research or are these areas that you have personal knowledge?

K.A.: I have been to every one of those places, and live in person research gives you a feel you can’t get off google maps, even with street view. But I wouldn’t refuse to set a book somewhere I hadn’t been–hello my characters from the nineteenth century, I’ll be back to visit soon! I find it more fun to set a book where I have some knowledge but that isn’t completely familiar. After all, I write to escape, and I don’t want a staycation in my fiction.

Susan: Is the series Bad in Baltimore coming to an end, or are there more books planned?Any plans for updates on the Florida or Ohio series? I must admit that Sean and Aaron are two of my all time favorite characters and I would not mind seeing what my bad boys have been up to.

K.A.: Bad Behavior, which features Gavin’s bridge-jumping friend Beach and a new character, will be in my editor’s hands soon. I do have other interesting characters in Baltimore which I would like to see more of, but I don’t have firm plans for that. In fact, I have never started any of my series intending them to be series. The secondary characters just think they deserve their own stories all the time. Sometimes I set them up with their worst nightmare just to get them to shut up. (Beach, Joey: I’m talking to you.)

Right now, I don’t have a plan to revisit Sean, though I do think he and Kyle might be considering adoption. I do have a plan to take me back to Florida, and it would be something that would definitely affect Joey and Aaron.

Susan: Speaking of bad boys, it is common knowledge that at least one of your guys in most of your books is known to be (how do I say this nicely?)a little difficult. For example: Nate, Aaron, Sean, Jack, Jamie. Is this just your personal style, or is it intentional to create drama and strife in the guys’ lives? I personally love the bad boys, so I say keep them coming!

My character’s are all like “Dude, she just called us assholes.” I’m saying “If the shoe fits…” Except Sean. He’s saying “Check that out. She thinks I’m alpha.” Kyle is rolling his eyes.

Well, in the case of Aaron, Joey was driving me crazy in my head demanding a book of his own. I told him he’d have to have a hero who hated social workers and his whole instant love program. He said he could handle it. I am very fond of seeing how opposites attract. Since I don’t write much external conflict, the guys have to have issues to work on. I try to have people who are both the best and worst for each other match up so they deserve a happy ending. If it’s too easy, there’s no book. And as Kyle and Sean could tell you, sometimes falling in love is the easy part. It’s making it work when bad stuff happens that makes a relationship.

Susan: For a little something different, we would like to ask a couple questions to the guys?

Silver, what first drew you to Zeb? He appears to be very similar in many ways to Quinn, and we all know that you don’t understand what Eli sees in Quinn.

Silver: Finally. I didn’t think K.A. would ever shut up. You know, Eli was just ragging on me about this the other day. and I don’t see it. First, Zeb is not old enough to be my father, thank you very much. Yeah, they are both kind of quiet if you don’t know them, but that’s about it. No way would Zeb ever try any of that telling-me-what-to-do shit.

When I first saw him, I was mostly just thinking please let there be another gay guy around here, but when I saw him smile I started thinking with my dick. Hello. Sixteen. But when he made me laugh, when I saw that this guy was decent for real instead of just pretending in church like my parents, then I started to fall in love. Plus, God, the way he kisses, like he’s dying and you’re the only thing that can save him. Damn.

Zeb, we know that religion is a very important part of your life. Have you been able to reconcile your past, your beliefs, and your guilt?

Zeb: God is about love and forgiveness. I believe He forgives me, and Jor–Silver did. I’m working on forgiving myself. It’s a work in progress, but that is key to my beliefs too. That you should work for things, not expect them. God has a plan and a path for you, but it’s up to you to stay on it, even when it’s hard work. I don’t believe God would have made me gay just to make me be alone. He wants us to love each other and treat each other well.

Quinn, you’ve led a relatively quiet life until you met, fell in love with, and forged a life with Eli? How do you handle all the energy and snark that comes with that little firecracker? Do you ever wish he would calm down?

Quinn: Hell no. That’s the worst thing I could imagine. I have to have it all. The whole crazy package from shaggy bangs to painted toenails. And every bit of my tough-vulnerable boy in between. I never want to go back to the half-life I was living before I met him. I’m glad to be out of that monochromatic world. I can handle him coloring outside the lines. I love being his anchor.

Silver, for someone so young, who has the traveled a very difficult road with very little support, did you ever expect to have so many friends stand up for you when you needed them most? What role did that play in deciding to help homeless youths?

Silver: I still don’t get Gavin. I mean, it’s great and I guess if you got money, you get to do what you want with it. But no, I never expected anyone, not even Eli, to put this much effort into helping my ass stay out of jail. I mean, I knew Eli was solid, like I could trust him with stuff, but for him to pull a fairy godmother out of his ass like that? Never saw that coming. I guess maybe helping out is just something I think I’d be good at. I get where they’re coming from, you know? And hell, Gavin actually listens to my ideas which is more than I can say for any other kind of work out there.

Hey, bloggergirls, this is Aaron Chase. I heard you guys asking K.A. about coming back to mess with shit in Jacksonville, and I want you to know, I got a full plate. Things are just settling down and I don’t need her throwing a monkey wrench in my life. If she thinks I’m raising another kid or taking in rent boys like those idiots up in Baltimore she’s nuts. Don’t let her near me. The only plans I want to hear about from her involve my dick up Joey’s ass, got it?

About K.A. Mitchell

K.A. Mitchell discovered the magic of writing at an early age when she learned that a carefully crayoned note of apology sent to the kitchen in a toy truck would earn her a reprieve from banishment to her room. Her career as a spin-control artist was cut short when her family moved to a two-story house, and her trucks would not roll safely down the stairs. Around the same time, she decided that Chip and Ken made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie dropped off. She never stopped making stuff up, though, and was surprised to find out that people would pay her to do it. Although the men in her stories usually carry more emotional baggage than even LAX can lose in a year, she guarantees they always find their sexy way to a happy ending.

About Bad Influence

To remake their future, they’ll have to use pieces of their broken past.

The young man the world knew as Jordan Barnett is dead, killed as much by the rejection of his first love at his moment of greatest need, as by his ultra-conservative parents’ effort to deprogram the gay away.

In his place is Silver, a streetwise survivor who’s spent the last three years learning to become untouchable…unless you’re willing to pay for the privilege. He shies away from anything that might hold him down long enough for betrayal to find him again.

Zebediah Harris spent time overseas, trying to outrun the guilt of turning his back on the young man he loved. Now, almost the moment he sets foot back in Baltimore, he discovers Silver on a street corner in a bad part of town. His effort to make amends lands them both in jail.

Trapped together in a cell, Silver sits on his mountain of secrets and plans a seductive form of revenge, but finds that using a heart as a stepping stone is no way to move past the one man he can’t forgive, let alone forget.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Mathew Ortiz + Giveaway

Interview Banner

Q&A with Mathew Ortiz

TBG: Hello, Matt, thank you for visiting The Blogger Girls!Ā  I think you are a new author to The Blogger Girls, well, except for JustJen, since she just read your newest Love and Salvage series book, Halestorm, so we thought it would be nice to get to know you a little better by asking you a few questions.

Tell us a little something about yourself we might not already know?Ā

Matt:Ā  Well, I’m an army brat born in Nuremberg, Germany and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I knew early on that I was gay and that I didn’t want to live in my home town. It was too constrictive. My mother said it was the gypsy blood in my veins that compelled me to travel, and she was right. I am intensely curious and open to so many new things. I played the cello for almost seven years; I can frame a house and do most renovations myself. I prefer to do it myself, that way I know it’s done right.

I’ve had my troubles, bad relationships and such. I also suffered from poor body image and starved myself to 190lbs to be thin. I was way too thin for my eastern European build. I was thin and could wear anything, but I was miserable the entire time. In my late thirties, I gained weight, but finally came into my own and love me for me. Oh, and I am a car diva. I sing out loud and proud!

TBG: Tell us a quirky story about your Husband.

Matt:Ā  He’s going to kill me but when we were first together, Tim had a habit of gesturing wildly with his arms when he talked. Like some crazy chicken. After a few years of this, I was sitting across from him at a restaurant, him flapping away and I said ā€œYou look like a deranged gay chicken when you do that with your arms.ā€ I flapped my arms to prove the point. He was so mad at me. But from that point, if I said the word ā€˜arms,’ he would stop flapping. Love my big gay chicken though!

TBG:Ā  How do you get your husband to leave you alone long enough to get all your writing done?

Matt:Ā  In the beginning, he was not sure what to make of my new passion for writing. At times, I think he was miffed at the time I was spending writing. He would keep interrupting, and I would lose my groove. We butted heads a few times in the beginning. He never read my early works, and it wasn’t until Love and Salvage: Eli’s Three Wishes that he picked up the book and read it. He was amazed. He did a complete one eighty. He now reads them and helps me with first run editing. In the end, he became one of my best cheerleaders and now asks me if I’m going to write that day and he leaves me be. He’s a great guy.

TBG: Ok, now for the book-related questions.Ā Tell us a bit about the Love and Salvage series and Halestorm.Ā What was your inspiration for writing them and where did you get the idea for the salvage company? Ā

Matt:Ā  I had just finished the Cookies and Coffee mini books and was trolling through the channels one late night on the TV and found Duck Dynasty. I found myself laughing at the things they were doing and relating to them. So, I got sidetracked and did Love and Salvage. Junk collectors who made a business of selling salvage. Two of my favorite shows are Salvage Dawgs and Rehab Addict. I love old homes!

Halestorm came about because I loved that Hale was a northerner, living with his friend Alex in the sticks of Georgia. A true fish out of water. Hale was me when I was younger. I didn’t appreciate the south and wanted none of it, like Hale. He hates everything about the south. He thought they were all backward and wanted to leave as soon as he could. Then, he met Bumper. My focus with Hale was that over time, those opinions he had of the south and southerners changed. A loner, Hale found himself taken in by a big loving southern family and treated with respect. Southerners are like that. We adopt people into our families and treat them like kin.

TBG: Did you have to do a lot of research?

Matt:Ā  For my upcoming Oswald Witches series, I did more research than ever before. I looked up herbs used for magical purposes, mystical creatures and current paranormal research in the area of the supernatural. Thanks to a friend on Facebook, I was able to set the basic premise for all the powers of the witches. This new series will go all the way back to the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe and how it was directly caused by the war between the four clans. So I have researched on the spread of the Plague, how it traveled and where it was the most virulent. It’s my most ambitious series yet, so my outline is extensive.

TBG:Ā  How do you know so much about “red neck” families, and how did you come up with some of the more unusual character names, such as Bumper’s real name – Wilberforce?

Matt:Ā  I grew up in redneck territory and was a hunting, fishing, barefoot hillbilly myself, with a southern twang. I loved growing up southern. The manners, the friendliness of the people, it was a great time, but it did have its negatives. Being gay in the south is difficult to say the least. I got harassed and called ā€˜faggot’, ā€˜queer’ and ā€˜cocksucker’. I was beaten up more than a few times. Yet, I wouldn’t change being raised in a southern town for anything. I thought, why not set a series in the south and blend rednecks, crazy family and gay men. I drew off experiences and the stories flowed. It was like going home. My sister gave me a great line that I used in one of my books. Redneck pate! Potted meat on a saltine cracker with an olive slice! I laugh every time I read that. Ā And as to Bumper’s given name, if you ever read the comic ā€˜The Born Loser’, the child was named Wilberforce. I was already sure I was calling Bumper ā€˜Bumper’, as nicknames are common in the south. What I needed was a name which he would cringe at, if he was called by it. So Bumper’s real name is Wilberforce. Wouldn’t you rather go by Bumper?

TBG:Ā  Are any of the characters in any of the three books in the series derived from real life people in your life?

Matt:Ā  Funny you should ask that because, in all honesty, Oscar and Eli are a lot like Tim and I. Tim is a ball of emotional energy, and I sit back relax and just grunt sometimes. He is the hyper one, and I’m the calm one. Of all the characters I have written, those two are the most like us. When Tim read Eli’s book, he looked up when he was done and said. ā€œOh my God, they’re us, aren’t they!?ā€ I couldn’t deny it.

And Oscar’s Abuela is modeled after my own friend Luz. She is exactly like her character in my book. I have used co-workers as basis for characters since the beginning. I work with some wonderful, kooky people.

TBG: How long have you been planning this series?

Matt:Ā  Love and Salvage was a whim. I started Emmett’s story and everything evolved organically from it. The stories told themselves. I always wanted to write a character named Emmett. I first heard the name on ā€˜Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas’. Love that name! And Tim despises Emmett Otter, too hillbilly for him.

TBG: Had you planned on the story heading into paranormal territory from the inception? Where did the idea come from to make that change?

Matt:Ā  I was going to go straight to the Oswalds, when Love and Salvage came about. I decided early on in Love and Salvage that it would be a bridge between my older series and the Oswalds. It wasn’t planned initially, but it was a happy accident. I knew by book two, Eli’s story, that I was going tie them into the Oswalds with Hale, and you’ll meet Oliver Oswald Blackthorne in the next and last Love and Salvage: Skin Tight Levi’s.

TBG:Ā  Halestorm is the prequel to the Oswald Witches. Will we see more of the Wolves in those stories and what other Supernaturals can we expect to meet?

Matt:Ā  Oh hell, you’re going to meet witches, dwarves, fairies, elves, trolls, werewolves and demons. My series has four clans: The Fire Clans for the demons and hellfire creatures, the Water Clans for the shape shifters, the Air Clans for the elves, ghosts and fairies, and the Earth Clan for the witches and dwarves. The only thing I am not using is vampires. I have enough as it is. I have six books planned…maybe more, and Mr. Hale McAvoy has a major part in the Oswalds. He is the un-witch witch, a perfect foil for his mystical family.

TBG: Okay, last questions: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have or favorite music you listen to that gets the inspiration flowing?Ā

Matt:Ā  I have two places; I do most of my writing. First, is on my patio by the pool. The weather is so nice here in Florida, I hate staying indoors unless I have to. So, I sit out there with a cigar and a drink and pound the keys. I also have my chair, in the family room that I sit at to write in. It’s firm, comfortable, and I can sit for hours writing in it.

As for inspiration, I do listen to music but I find myself putting on a DVD from two of my favorite British sitcoms: Keeping Up Appearances and The Vicar of Dibley. The humor and the character interaction inspire me and make me laugh, even though I’ve seen all the episodes at least a dozen times. I will be watching more creepy movies, when I write the Oswald Witches. I recently went to Disney World and road the Haunted Mansion ride. The interiors inspired me and will set the tone of the Oswald house.

TBG: Thank you so much for stopping by! Best of luck with your new book and upcoming Oswald series!

Matt:Ā  Thank so much for the interview Jen. Oh and P.S. Did I use enough commas?

About Mathew Ortiz

Mathew Ortiz has lived in sunny Florida with his partner, Tim, for the last ten years. Tim bought him a KindleĀ  for his birthday, and his world suddenly got a lot bigger. An avid reader, he was soon wracking up several hundred books onto his Kindle a month. So, obviously trying his hand at writing seemed to be the next logical step. He wrote his first novella one year ago and hasn’t looked back. After writing papers for people in college and for his own Bachelors in Nursing, writing for fun was a blessing. A fanboy of anything British, sumo wrestling, rugby and cooking, you can usually find him obsessing over a new cook book or sitting on the porch with his father-in-law, shooting the s**t!

That’s the official bio.

Now for me. Hi, I’m Matt, and I love writing in the gay men’s romance genre. By my own admission and my mother’s, I am a natural story teller with a very twisted sense of humor. I write characters that are flawed as people, real people because Lord knows, I’m a odd piece of work. Inspiration for my books can come from anything:Ā  from a ring, to a house, to an odd comment by a friend. Nothing is safe or sacred with me, and if you know me, you might end up in one of my books. I find my friends to be a rich source of inspiration. So, that’s it. Just a regular guy…mostly!

Halestorm

HalestormBlurb: Cursed, he must be cursed. Everything about Bumper Gaither drew Hale like a moth to a flame. When Bumper walked into the room, time stood still for Hale, and it took all he had not to scale Mount Bumper. Every fiber of Hale’s being wanted to throw himself into the big bear’s arms. There was one problem. Well not a problem, per se. How was Hale gonna tell Bumper that he was a witch……way was UP!

Bumper’s head spun, he chest grew tight, all at the sight of the spitfire named Hale McAvoy. Their blistering kiss at his Aunt and Uncle’s barbeque left him wanting more, a lot more. However, despite his best efforts, Hale steadfastly refused to go out with him, despite the obvious attraction. That only made Bumper more determined. Like a bulldog with a bone, Bumper was not letting go. So why was Hale so hesitant to go out with him?

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Liz Borino + Angel’s Hero Giveaway

Interview Banner

Ā

Q&A with Liz Borino

TBG: Hello, Liz, thank you for visiting The Blogger Girls.Ā  I think you are a new author to all four of us, well, except for Susan since she just read your new Angel series, so we thought it would be nice to get to know you a little better by asking you a few questions.

Liz: Thanks for having me!

TBG: Tell us a little about yourself?Ā

Liz: I grew up between two conservative, small towns in Pennsylvania. One had the advantage of movie theaters and shopping malls within a short driving distance. The other’s mark of civilization happened when it gained a Wal-Mart ten years ago. Everyone knows your name there, and more relevant to someone who failed to fit into the dominant ideology, they also know your family… for about five generations. So, if I could have left at ten, I would have, but I had to wait until I turned eighteen. At which point I chose a college near New York City, where I went through three different majors before deciding on Public Relations. A few years and a broken engagement later, I began my English MA in… yet another small town in PA. I’m working on getting out again.

TBG: Tell us a quirky story about one of your favorite relatives?

Liz: My Aunt Marna has always been my greatest supporter. When I was growing up, she lived in Southern California, but used to come to Philadelphia on business frequently. One winter she arrived during a rain and sleet storm, and rang the doorbell.Ā  I opened it to find her drenched and shivering. She shook me by the shoulders and said, ā€œYou don’t have to live like this!ā€ Ironically enough, her job transferred her to Philly a few years later.

TBG: All right, now let’s get to writing questions.Ā  Have you been writing all your life?Ā  Or is M/M Romance a fairly new venture for you?

Liz: I completed my first (handwritten) book at eleven. While it was not M/M romance – nor good probably, to know I would first have to find and be able to read it – I was happy to have something finished. I found out that S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders, published her first novel at fourteen. And I was infused with hope that I, too, could find early success. Lazy Day my first M/M Romance was when I was twenty-three. I’ve been writing it for six years now. I never considered the genre before one of the twins in my first series turned out to be gay. I thought I was writing a book mostly about brotherly love, but… nope. They had other plans.

TBG: Tell us a bit about the Angel’s Hero and Angel’s Truth.Ā  What was your inspiration for writing them? Ā

Liz: One day I thought, ā€œI wonder what would have happened if Mike (from No Flag) had diedā€¦ā€ Then decided Will (his husband) would have fallen apart. So, I created new characters who would not. Instead, Aaron didn’t believe the officers who broke the news.

TBG: Did you have to do a lot of research?

Liz: Yes, I have been researching the military for a year or so now to inform No Flag and the Angel series. I’ve also explored PTSD, different injuries the characters sustained, and the CIA. I’m probably on a few government watch lists.

TBG: How long did it take you…from plot bunny to completion?

Liz: Three months for the two books.

TBG: Are you a pantser or a planner?

Liz: Both. You know, I try to be a planner. I make very detailed outlines and have every intention of sticking to them, but sometimes the boys get other ideas… and if I disagree, they stop talking to me.

TBG: Okay, one last question: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

Liz: I tend to write on my bed, while listening to a playlist to start working. And I’m sorry, but you can’t have a picture because my room is not fit to be published.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Rhys Ford

Interview Banner

The Blogger Girls: Heather and Nikyta first met Rhys Ford at GRL 2012 in Albuquerque. For those who don’t know her, you are definitely missing out because not only does she tell some wickedly hilarious stories but she’s an awesome person who just loves chatting with her readers. We are extremely excited she was willing to let us interview her and even was willing to answer a few some-what personal questions! What personal questions, you ask? Well, keep on reading and you’ll find out šŸ˜‰

blogger_bee_transQ&A with Rhys Ford

TBG: Hi, Rhys! Welcome to The Blogger Girls!

Rhys: First, thank you for having me here! Really appreciate it!

TBG: Okay, let’s get the ball rolling. Where did you get the inspiration for Clockwork Tangerine and how did that influence your naming of the book?

Rhys: The inspiration for Clockwork Tangerine? Oh man, no idea. I was probably lacking sleep and brushing my teeth or something. Apparently the bathroom is where I have most of my ideas. I should just move a computer table in there. Storylines come to me while I’m washing my hair. Go figure.

The story originally started off much shorter and with the intention of being in a steampunk anthology but after I submitted it, the decision was made over at Dreamspinner Press to turn it into a novella—for which I am grateful because it allowed me a larger word count so I could go in and explore some things at greater depth. While I didn’t have time for a full length novel, it was good to be world building and try to produce something within a novella framework.

I actually named the book outside of the story itself. One of the main themes from Clockwork Orange is Order in Society versus Freedom of Choice, which I knew I’d be exploring in this yet unnamed and half-written novella. Robin came out of the idea of a discarded toy, one abused by an uncaring child then handed to another child then finally tossed away. He was a thrown out teddy bear whose fur was used to soak up the tears from nightmares but too many people felt he actually represented those nightmares and had to be destroyed.

Marcus serves as a symbol of not so much redemption but hope and trust. He’s rather an arch-angel of sorts—at least for Robin. Robin didn’t need saving as much as he needed protection from the storm around him. Marcus has a choice of being the man his father wanted him to be or the man the ton expects him to be. No one would blame him for demonizing Robin Harris. After all, the man killed Marcus’ father in a fashion.

Robin would continue as he was with or without Marcus. Marcus’ character would be determined not only by his actions but his lack of action. It was an interesting angle to write.

TBG: Wow, that’s really deep and insightful. Do you have plans for anything else in this world?

Rhys: I would love to. It all depends on how this does and if I have time. Writing a full length fantasy-ish novel takes a hell of a lot more time than practically anything else. Go figure. You’d think it would be easier. But then I guess, my brain’s just wired off. Okay, time to move into that bathroom!

TBG: Haha. Okay, you’ve written contemporary mystery. Ā You’ve written ghosts and steampunk. You’ve even written an urban fantasy. When are you going to write Heather a historical? Ā And Nikyta wants a Sci-Fi.Ā

Rhys: Funny you should say historical. Something came to me while I was in the bathroom today. No seriously. I would love to have the time to write it. It was all so clear. Victorian London even. So much research and the language changes but oh, so much fun.

Sci-Fi? Oh man, wow. Shit. Hell. I dunno about that one. Maybe a short.

Nikyta: Whaaa?? A short?! THAT’S IT?! How rude! LOL

TBG: Back to the urban fantasy genre, when do you plan to give us another Kai Gracen story to follow up Black Dog Blues?Ā  IĀ  know he is self-pubbed and harder to write…but he has fans too!

Rhys: Kai. I have no intentions of abandoning Kai. I plan on writing his adventures in serial format… maybe 40K each or so. He also takes a bit of time and brain. I might have to break my cardinal rule of not writing two things at once in order to get more Kai done. But yes, I do have one started.

Now on to the more personal questions.

TBG: Hehe. We know you love your fur-babies, you’ve even made Neko famous. What’s the weirdest pet you’ve ever owned?

Rhys: A boyfriend? Um… wow. Oh! I had a pet crayfish! We’d bought a bunch of them…they were alive… to use in a crab boil and he escaped then fought off the tongs. So, I bought him a fish tank and he lived in it for three years. Which apparently is a good long time for a domestic-raised crayfish. He shed his shell a couple of times and scared the shit out of me because it comes off all in one piece! It was like.. suddenly two crayfish! He knew when you were close to the tank because he would wave his claws. This would get him food. Should have named him Pavlov. He was by himself in that tank. Anything else would have been food.

TBG: Ummm. Wow, okay. Moving on lol. Some may not know that you have a certain love for tattoos, you even wear some of your own art. Do you mind sharing with us if you have your next one planned and what will it be? Ā (Ignore question if it’s too personal)

Rhys: I would absolutely love to get an Alice in Wonderland themed tat. I also need to finish up the peony along my shoulder. I haven’t planned anything per se. Usually the idea for one hits and I ruminate on it before sketching something out. Or looking for something. All but one of the pieces on me is my own art.

The one that isn’t is a custom design done for me by Rob Benavides who owns Flying Panther down here in San Diego. He asked me one day—after inking me for 15 years—when I was going to let him put his art on me. We were in his shop to make appointments for my sister and her friends and fell into talking. I told him sure, let’s do it. I needed to work on my trust issues and if anyone was going to put their art on me, it should be Rob since well, he’s my guy.

Blew him away. Fifteen years and now I say yes? He was all… fuck. Shit. Now it’s gotta rock.Ā  He gave me a hapa dragon—both Eastern and Western—done in traditional style. Long sessions on it. It goes from my right knee up to my hip. Hurt like a fucking bitch but I’d do it again.

TBG:Ā Jesus. That sounds intense! Now, you promised Nikyta and Heather to a Korean dinner at GRL 2013 in Atlanta, instead they got fried chicken and waffles, although they say it was scrumptious.Ā  They even forgive you for getting them lost…mostly.Ā  Please give us a quick and easy Korean for Dummies recipe…something even Jen couldn’t screw up.Ā

Rhys: I wasn’t the one with the directions, if you recall. *grins*

Easy? Okay. Go here: http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/category/noh-quick-easy-seasoning

Look for Korean BBQ Mix and buy some. Follow the directions. They sometimes go out of stock but it’ll be back. If it is out of stock, grab some char siu mix. Or even the kimchee mix. Really. Best dollar and change you’d spend.

I will have to write down recipes because I cook by feel and taste. Hell, I have no idea what proportions things are. I had to break down the fried rice recipe for people. I’ll promise you one later.

This is also a good deal: http://www.amazon.com/NOH-Korean-Barbecue-1-5-Ounce-Packet/dp/B0001IOSEA/ref=sr_1_1?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1392533740&sr=1-1&keywords=noh+korean

TBG: We’ll hold you to that promise! Okay, one last question: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

Rhys: My work place is my living room. Usually I’m fighting to keep Yoshi the cat off of my computer table and wow, mostly I surround myself with quiet. The house tends to be quiet when I write. I take the dogs out in the morning, stab the cat (he’s diabetic and needs insulin), pour some coffee, brush my teeth and then start the writing after I’ve done cleaning out my emails.

Inspiration usually is music. I cannot write without music. It helps me focus and drowns out anything else in the way. Usually what I’m listening to depends on the mood for the scene. I have a pretty wide range of tastes and have playlists. Most of Fish and Ghosts was written to dance, electronica and Gorillaz. It all varies.

Coffee. Coffee is always good.

Rhys' Writing Space

TBG: Yes, coffee is ALWAYS good! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Rhys: Thank you for having me! I said that. Yeah I know. Heh. But really, thank you. Smooches and please really, try the kal-bi mix from Noh’s. They rock and it is so easy!

CLOCKWORK TANGERINE

Clockwork Tangerine by Rhys Ford eBookThe British Empire reigns supreme, and its young Queen Victoria has expanded her realm to St. Francisco, a bustling city of English lords and Chinese ghettos. St. Francisco is a jewel in the Empire’s crown and as deeply embroiled in the conflict between the Arcane and Science as its sister city, London—a very dark and dangerous battle.

Marcus Stenhill, Viscount of Westwood, stumbles upon that darkness when he encounters a pack of young bloods beating a man senseless. Westwood’s duty and honor demand he save the man, but he’s taken aback to discover the man is Robin Harris, a handsome young inventor indirectly responsible for the death of Marcus’s father.

Living in the shadows following a failed coup, Robin devotes his life to easing others’ pain, even though his creations are considered mechanical abominations of magicks and science. Branded a deviant and a murderer, Robin expects the viscount to run as far as he can—and is amazed when Marcus reaches for him instead.

Clockwork Tangerine releases tomorrow, February 19th, 2014 at Dreamspinner Press and is currently available for pre-order so make sure you buy your copy now! Also, check out Nikyta’s review to see what she thought of this little steampunk short.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Mary Calmes

Interview Banner

Nikyta: I’ve been reading Mary Calmes for years and she’s consistently been one of my favorite authors since I first discovered her. I reread her books all the time and honestly, I couldn’t even begin to explain why I love her writing so much. When I found out she was going to be in Atlanta at GRL 2013, I was so excited! I was going to get ALL of my paperbacks signed AND get a picture and I totally fangirled all over her at the book signing! But imagine my disappointment when I came home from GRL and realized I NEVER GOT A PICTURE WITH HER! *palm meet face* When she agreed to be part of our first Author Week and do an interview, I could not for the life of me figure out any questions to ask. So, while I’m a total Mary Calmes fan, I want to thank Gyn for thinking of these awesome questions! We hope y’all enjoy this Q&A as much as we did šŸ™‚

blogger_bee_trans

Q&A with Mary Calmes

Mary: First off I would like to thank you all for having me on your new blog; I’m so honored to be here.

TBG: No, thankĀ you for agreeing to come! Now let’s get this party started!Ā What inspires you to write your stories and how do you come up with the intensity that is in all of your books?

Mary: There are a so many different things that inspire books. Sometimes it’s a song like it was for Mine, or a painting like it was for Acrobat or an ad campaign like it was for A Matter of Time. Hard to know what will click beforehand, but when it does, watch out! I take fast notes and try and get home as fast as I can. My husband will ask, are you sick? And then he’ll whisper, do you need a bathroom? And I have to tell him, no, must…get…to…the computer! He’s used to it by now and just makes it happen. I have come out of the shower with soap all over my body because I thought of something and have to go type it into a book. As far as intensity…really? I don’t think of my books as being terribly intense. I try and make sure that the love comes through, that’s the most important thing to me so I always focus on that.

TBG: With so many series and great characters, how do you move on to something new and how do you decide when you are done with a series or certain characters?

Mary: I move on to something new when I feel that there is no more to tell. Like with Jory & Sam in AMOT, their story was complete with But For You. That doesn’t mean though that Sam couldn’t make a small appearance in Parting Shot or that he can’t show up somewhere else. Basically, I never go home with him again, we see him through others, never Jory. I like to follow a character until they’re all grown up and we’ve seen them become the best possible version of themselves.

TBG: Do you have more planned for the Change of Heart series and will that include getting to know Jin and Logan’s child? Also, can we look forward to seeing more of Domin and Yuri’s relationship?

Mary: Yes. Yes. And no. I have a last CoH book featuring Wick & Dov who are globetrotting werepanthers who police the world making sure no one knows that shifters exist. So the premise of the last one is that Domin sends them to check in on Logan & Jin because they are not taking his calls, answering email, etc. The last book goes back to the house in Nevada where Jin & Logan’s son is growing up, where everyone is, and to face the problems there. It’s hard to end a series but it’s time. I won’t have another book specifically about Domin & Yuri either because I think Domin is as good as he gets, facing everyday deciding to be good. I want the series to wrap with a new couple but on familiar ground.

TBG: Speaking of the Change of Heart series, how did you manage to create a language so unique to that world? Were you inspired by something specific and was it difficult to work it into the story?

Mary: When I created my werepanthers, I wanted them to be as separate from werewolf lore as possible. Since a lot of that comes from Europe, I went in the opposite direction. And cats were revered in Egypt so it seemed like a good fit. I have so many, too many, books on Egypt, and so I took real words, real festivals, and incorporated them with some words I made up. What’s interesting is that there are more real words in my glossaries then made up ones. And I didn’t have trouble putting it in the story because in the world I made, those are words everyone knows. Amy Lane says that world building all starts with what does your character say when he stubs his toe? Does he swear? What would he/she say? Does he take his deity’s name in vain? If so, who is that deity? It’s about really small things, not big ones. That’s what I tried to do with my werepanthers.

TBG: You’ve written quite a few other books that are standalones; do you have plans to continue some of them into a series or at least write sequels? Specifically for Heart of the Race, Any Closer, Steamroller, Frog and Mine? (Hehe)

Mary: I am going to write a sequel for Mine because I got interested in Conrad Harris and who he is. I gave him a walk-on part in Parting Shot to see if that would be enough for me but it wasn’t so that is on my list for this year. I have 5 sequels to get done in 2014. Heart of the Race, no. Any Closer, I haven’t decided yet. I had an idea for a book about Charlie’s ex so I’m on the fence about that. Steamroller, I don’t think so but I haven’t completely ruled it out. I actually started and didn’t like it but whereas I used to just delete everything, Cardeno has helped me see the error of my ways. Now I keep things and revisit. Frog is a firm no, there’s no more to tell there. I don’t like to write sequels if there is no new information for the reader to learn. I do love when I’m asked though, about any book, because it means that some part of that story touched some part of the reader and that makes me deliriously happy when that happens.

TBG: Now for some fun questions: Which character do you think most closely resembles your own personality?

Mary: I mostly resemble Sam Kage. I am opinionated and obnoxious and get mad too fast and don’t think when I should. I try every day to be better.

TBG: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

Mary: I write at my desk in a corner of the living room because I have a desktop and not a laptop. I had a laptop but it kept getting too hot. So now I am surrounded by bookcases, sticky notes everywhere, and my things like my lucky cat, the Jin doll TiffĀ  made me, my Cris-Art cup of Billy & Teddy, my Liverpool cup Lori Toland brought back from England for me, and did I mention the books?

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Heidi Cullinan + Special Delivery Giveaway

Heather C: Since the first year Gay Rom Lit was created, Nikyta and I have managed to attend the retreat every year and meet a ton of amazing people. One of those people is Heidi Cullinan, who is not only a great writer but a lovely and entertaining person as well…

blogger_bee_transQ&A with Heidi Cullinan

TBG: There’s a scene in Special Delivery where the characters visit a sex shop. What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you in a similar situation?

Heidi: Oh, lord. Well, a million years ago when we were first married, my husband and I would go to a local sex shop in Iowa City—rent movies, buy toys, try out the arcades. It was a very openly gay friendly shop, though not exclusive, and we really liked it. One day a friend of ours was curious, and he went with us. He took in the full experience, including the arcade.

Well, Dan and I went in one booth, he in one next door. He dropped his keys and then was all, ā€œThis floor is sticky.ā€ Which…yes. Worse, though, his booth had a glory hole, and while he is not gay he gives off a heavy gay vibe, always has. Someone apparently wanted to get something going, because the next thing we heard after sticky keys was, ā€œThere’s a hole in the wall. There’s something coming through the hole. Oh my God, there’s aā€¦ā€

We left shortly thereafter, and we just don’t speak of that night very often.

TBG: You have been known to dress in drag at some of the big writing conventions, how long does it take for you to get into character?Ā  Is it true that you use your own characters for inspiration?

Well, this is kind of a recent phenomenon, though most recently now I’m getting in drag as a favor to friends/fans. It started last year at RT, where I was supposed to dress up as ā€œsomethingā€ for an event, and at a loss I took Damon Suede’s partner’s suggestion I go as a trucker, because that’s one of my books, and it’s easy. He meant put on flannel and a cap, but I’m a Virgo and I like details, so I thought, well maybe I can do a beard with eye shadow. It turns out I can—the effect was so strong my daughter freaked out because she didn’t recognize me and thought a stranger was in the house.

At that RT event, most people didn’t know who I was—which kind of lost the promotional angle, I have to say. That one hour was supposed to be it, but then someone had a bad day and had missed the event, and as a favor I put it back on. This led to Damon Suede staging urinal poses, all kinds of wicked dancing with pretty much everyone, and a promise I would wear it at GRL.

In Atlanta I went as a trucker and a cowboy, so people called one look Mitch and one Travis. I’ve gone to the Blazing Saddle in Des Moines in drag and have been told I need to do it again. It’s fun, and I don’t mind, so I imagine this is not the end of the shenanigans.

I call my drag persona Calvin Fine—getting into character happens with the clothes and makeup, which take about an hour to get fully into. As soon as the beard starts going on I feel like I’m getting there. Once it’s on, everyone views you differently. A lot of people never quite believe it’s me. It’s really interesting to see how drag affects people. I will say I confuse a hell of a lot of gay men, though most seem to regard it with delight.

Gyn, Heidi & Heather

TBG: In Dirty Laundry, Adam was a really broken character with a serious condition.Ā  How did you tap into that kind of psyche and what kind of research did you do on his condition?

Heidi: My husband and my daughter both have clinical anxiety, so this is not something I’m unaware of. I have a good friend who has OCD, and I grilled her extensively before I wrote too much of Adam, as well as read a lot of books, articles, case studies. The one thing I was adamant about was he was not going to be cured, and in no way was BSDM his medicine. In my experience mental illness, in addition to being simply another bodily condition to be managed like diabetes or allergies, is about finding tools and levers and crutches to get around problems. Anxiety doesn’t go away with medicine or will. It must be managed and respected as a present force in one’s life, and it’s not shameful, no more than is my gluten allergy.

TBG: Does your husband read your books?Ā  If so, what is his favorite?Ā

Heidi: He reads everything first, and if I were to not give him a book he would be hurt and think I was upset with him. He feels very proprietary about Special Delivery, which he should because it was his nagging that got me to finish it. He likes The Pirate’s Game because it’s dedicated to him and because there’s a lot of messaging between us in there. But his favorite is Love Lessons. He’s reading Fever Pitch right now and he says all he wants to do is go reread Love Lessons after.

TBG: You’ve written BDSM, historical, sweet contemporary, bears and twinks!Ā  Is there any type of story you haven’t written that you want to try?

Heidi: I’d like to get into the full LGBT alphabet soup, and I’d like to weave some heterosexual romances in eventually as part of the worlds, especially the Love Lessons series, but right now I’m barely keeping up with myself, so we’ll see.

TBG: You are heavily involved in RWA and have recently been interviewed by a major news outlet, how do you see yourself topping this in 2014 as an author? As a voice for the M/M genre?

Heidi: Happily I’m not even past president this year of RRW, though I’m standing by ready to help the board with whatever they feel would best serve the organization. Mostly what I focus on is getting gay romance and LGBT romance into the mainstream, to not have us be a separate category but a full, present player in the romance genre. I’m always trying to network with broader romance communities, and above all I’m doing my best to write quality gay romances in all subgenres of romance which represent the LGBT community and promote equality and acceptance and open minds.

TBG: What most interests me about Special Delivery, and I believe we’ve briefly discussed this before, is Sam’s relationship with his mother and how her death is a bit of the catalyst that allows him to take the trip with Mitch. Ā Can you tell me a little on that and about how, in your opinion, Sam grows throughout the “road trip” experience?

Heidi: When I first started writing Special Delivery, Sharyle was alive and well, Sam’s sounding board when he came home from adventures with Mitch. I had a hard time making the plot work that way though, and eventually I realized for Sam to grow he had to leave home. The going away from what he knew was a vital part of him realizing his full self, the leaving behind the roles he’d accepted, the false-truths he’d internalized.

However, he was never going to leave his mother, not for anything, even if she told him he had to. He would never, ever have left her to take care of herself even for a little while, especially not to have a sex adventure with a trucker. And so I had to write it that Sharyle passed away before the book started, that her loss was part of what pushed him to leave Middleton and take a leap into a new way to look at life.

I do feel like she’s with him all the time, though, on his trip and in his life, period. He is her in so many ways, which of course is the best tribute. In many ways he was always the man he is at the end of the book, but he’d shut so many options for himself off, resigning himself to a future Middleton would accept. Yes, he has a lot of crazy sex on the way to Las Vegas, but more than anything those encounters are part of the chrysalis he eventually bursts out of to claim his full self. It’s the difference between someone who knows they could finish that novel or song or climb that mountain or learn that dance step and someone who actually does go get their brass ring. It wasn’t so much about what he went and claimed as the fact that he did it.

TBG: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

Heidi: I write in this little room off my daughter’s room—I’m not sure what it was meant to be, because it’s not exactly a nursery, but it has these shuttered windows between my space and hers. It’s about six by twelve, with a closet where I keep all my promo stuff and notes. I have a big white board beside my desk where I keep to do lists and map out stories and try to hatch plots. I have a glider rocker in the corner which is mostly inhabited by cats, and there’s other cat furniture in here as well. There are three big windows behind me, but the glare really gets my monitor, so I keep the curtains shut.

My office is a kind of terra cotta with peach trim, colors I chose when we first moved in and which I would never change. I love those colors when I work. So warm and inviting, like a soft fire. I have some knickknacks, but not many, and I have to keep everything dusted and clean because I have a dust mite allergy, and it’s a toss-up as to which space I use more, this or my bedroom. I use a 27ā€ iMac to write everything on, and while that screen is huge, sometimes I wish it were even bigger. I like to spread all my applications and notes around.

I don’t have much in the way of books in here, because they collect dust like crazy, but I have a small bookshelf beside me that has my books, my Tarot cards and reference books, and all the tax documents I do my best to keep up with all year. I also have my two favorite stuffed animals from when I was a kid as my mascots.

Thanks for having me by!

Book One of the Special Delivery Series

When your deepest, darkest fantasy shows up, get on board.

Sam Keller knows he’ll never find the excitement he craves in Middleton, Iowa—not while he’s busting his ass in nursing school and paying rent by slaving away in a pharmacy stockroom.Ā Then Sam meets Mitch Tedsoe, an independent, long-haul trucker who makes a delivery to a shop across the alley. Innocent flirting quickly leads to a fling, and when Mitch offers to take him on a road trip west, Sam jumps at the chance for adventure.Ā Mitch is sexy, funny and friendly, but once they embark on their journey, something changes. One minute he’s the star of Sam’s every x-rated fantasy, the next he’s almost too much a perfect gentleman. And when they hit the Las Vegas city limit, Sam has a name to pin on Mitch’s malady: Randy.

For better or for worse, Sam grapples with the meaning of friendship, letting go, growing up—even the meaning of love—because no matter how far he travels, eventually all roads lead home.
