Writing What I Love

by Rebecca Cohen

‘Under Glass’ is a science fiction m/m romance novel, probably not one of the most popular sub genres I could’ve chosen to write in. I like to play in many genres (historical, contemporary, fantasy) and now is the turn of science fiction, and it completes my writer tag line of ‘Love Through Time, Space and Reality’. But I didn’t just chose to write a 100k+ word novel to tick a box, oh no! I love science fiction, have done for as long as I can remember, so when the idea came to me to have a race of planet builders who have a genetic predisposition for true love, there was never a chance I wouldn’t write it.

I’m lucky in some ways that writing isn’t my sole income, so I can have the freedom to write in less popular genres. But this story had to be written, it simply wouldn’t leave me alone. So I had to write ‘Under Glass’ to silence the jabbering characters – there was no way they’d shut up long enough to let me write anything else. Even the world building assaulted me when I least expected it, so I really had to get it under control on the page.

So I hope you enjoy my foray into an alien world, and maybe I can tempt a couple of readers who enjoyed my other novels to have a nibble at some science fiction.

About Under Glass

UG coverCreating planets and guarding the stars leaves novice planet builder Kai Faewiva lonely. For members of Kai’s species who are born with an organ called a caerellon, their true love, their Sun or Moon, is identified at birth. But the novices are people who have lost their perfect love, and Kai’s Sun is long dead, killed in an accident when he was five years old. Or so everyone thought.

After recovering from another bout of the unidentified illness he has battled for years, Kai returns to work. But his quiet day at the planetarium is thrown into chaos when scans of Goka Prime, one of the planets in the Sol-Alpha2 system, picks up a life-form that shouldn’t be there. Kai’s Sun, Oliver Gyin, is alive and well, but how he got to be on Goka Prime, no one knows. Now he needs to be brought home.

Ollie has lived most of his life in the City of Harrea, never guessing he is from another planet. Surprised to find a stranger means the world to him, Ollie wrestles with his loyalties and the drive to return with Kai. To leave Goka Prime, he must give up everything and everyone he knows. But twenty years apart means Kai and Ollie face a fight to secure their destined future.

About Never Too Early: Finding Their Way

unnamedWhen Jake Taggart fell from the roof of his barn, Tor had only one thought — to reach out to Chance Shanahan and Tucker McBride for support. In this follow-up to Never Too Early: The Beginning, the first book in the Cowboy/Firefighter series, the two couples are reunited in their mutual concern for Jake. But how far will that concern go?

A strong friendship begins to explore the boundaries of something else; something all four men never looked for or expected. Emotions and attraction are difficult to deny, try as they might, but giving in has the potential to destroy everything both couples have worked so hard for. How will they handle something that none of them set out to find?

An Excerpt from Never Too Early: Finding Their Way

Jake reached out and touched the back of Chance’s hand. “Thank you for coming all this way to be with me. Thank you for coming to sit next to me, and for helping Tor. Thank you for everything you and Tucker have done around here, but mostly thank you for being someone I can count on.” Jake nodded firmly and looked up into Chance’s face, studying his eyes. “Thanks for caring so much.”

Chance’s gaze was steady and direct. “I didn’t mean to,” he said quietly. “I thought you were a good guy, that’s all. I thought you were nice and funny and smart and easy to talk to. I didn’t mean for there to be more than that.”

Jake nodded. “I know. We all know. But there is, and I’m okay with that. Thankful for it, really. And so is Tor. And Tucker sent me upstairs to talk to you, and said not to let you overthink it.” He smiled, trying not to shake with nerves. “So sit down here next to me and stop thinking.”

About Chris Owen

I live and write in eastern Canada.  I went to a bunch of schools, learned a lot of things, and now make stuff up because not to do so is unthinkable. I’m fond of fountain pens, Levenger’s Circa system, and Steampunk fashions. Lately I’ve been watching a lot of Discovery channel. I’ve seen every episode of CSI Las Vegas and New York, but I’m not terribly keen on CSI Miami. It might be due to weather envy. I have a crush on the whole cast of Criminal Minds, and fondness for wool. The two are not related. Hoarders keeps me honest. I’m inspired by the day to day minutia of life, and find beauty in the way words go together. I like texture and richness of experience. I’m not shy. I’m happy, I’m learning, I’m living.

A Blogger Girl Interview with Ava March + Giveaway

Interview Banner

Heather C:  For those who follow The Blogger Girls, they may have recognized that I’m pretty much the only one that reads and reviews historical romances. Any thoughts on how to convince readers that historicals are just as good as contemporaries? (For the record, you totally converted me with your Brook Street series)

Ava:  I think historicals are more fun than contemporaries because the reader gets to be transported to another time and place. It’s different than what people experience in everyday life. There were also no mobile phones, no TV, no cars. You couldn’t just call someone. If you liked someone, you had to spend time with him in person to get to know him better. As a result, historicals have just always felt more romantic to me.

***

Heather C:  If I remember correctly, all of your books have a Regency setting. Any plans to explore other time periods?

Ava:  Perhaps. I have an idea for a contemporary that has been nagging at me. We’ll see, though, if it ever gets written. Usually, if I get a contemporary idea, it quickly morphs into a historical. My muse must prefer historicals. But this idea hasn’t morphed yet. So maybe someday I’ll try my hand at a contemporary.

***

Heather C: From Afar is your one and only paranormal, any plans to continue that story into series? Or create other paranormal worlds?

Ava:  At this time, I don’t plan to continue From Afar into a series. I have ideas for additional stories set in that world, but I also have a long list of other story ideas. Invariably, when it has come time to decide on a next book to write, there’s been another story screaming louder at me to write it.

***

Heather C:  What kinds of research do you do when getting ready to start a new project?

Ava:  It depends on the story. Sometimes I need to do research ahead of time in order to nail down plot points. Other times, I’ll do research as I write the story.

***

Heather C:  What new things can we expect to see from you in 2015?

Ava:  Viscount’s Wager, the 3rd book in the Gambling on Love series, will be available in August, 2015. And later this year, I’m collaborating with Cooper Davis on a duology. My contribution will be a novella featuring Sam from Brook Street: Thief, and Cooper will be contributing a story set in her Noble Pleasures world.

***

Heather C:  Now I’m going to make you play favorites! Out of all the books you’ve written, please tell us your…Favorite Series?

Ava:  The Brook Street series. I adore all the guys in that series and how they each found love. And I particularly liked how most of the guys were friends and hung out together. I have an idea for a dinner party epilogue short story for them, and one of these days, I’ll get around to writing it.

Heather C:  …Favorite Book?

Ava:  This one varies with time. It was All In with the Duke for a while (because Max and Tristan – love their relationship), but lately, I’ve been super in love with Viscount’s Wager. I’m almost almost done writing the book, and I’m just loving how it has come together.

Heather C:  …Favorite Character?

Ava:  Leopold Thornton from Convincing Arthur and Convincing Leopold. He comes across as this gorgeous, unrepentant rakehell seeped in vice. Yet inside, he’s desperately in love with Arthur and terribly insecure. And he’s so drama. He was fun to write.

Heather C:  …Favorite Sex Scene?

Ava:  Oliver and Vincent’s first sex scene in Bound by Deception. I love the dynamics of the scene. Oliver’s excitement to finally be with the guy he’s loved for years coupled with the need to hide who he is and the surprise at finding out Vincent’s into some kinky play. Vincent starts off all ‘I’m in control’ alpha, but by the end of the scene, he’s showing signs of turning into a softie for Oliver.

***

Heather C:  One final question, just for fun. If you were thrown back into a historical time period, what is the one modern amenity you would have to take with you and why?

Ava:  Modern plumbing. It’s not an easy thing to take with you, but since we’re talking hypothetical, in my hypothetical world, I could wave my magic wand and bring modern plumbing with me when I travel back in time. Granted, by the late Regency, valves that could mix hot and cold water had been patented and were beginning to be put in use. Still, it wasn’t the same as the convenience of a full modern plumbing system. And since I’m bringing plumbing with me, I’d throw together a bag of my favorite shampoo, conditioner, and yummy smelling soaps and lotions. What would be the fun of having a big jetted tub in 1820 if you couldn’t slather on yummy smelling lotion when you got out?

About His Client

24647042Love wasn’t supposed to be part of the bargain…

On every visit to Madame Delacroix’s brothel, Nathaniel Travers requests the same man. Stunningly handsome and highly skilled, Jasper not only shares Nate’s fondness for wickedly erotic games and black leather corsets, but he has become a trusted confidant. And Jasper’s the only person who knows Nate longs for a committed relationship with his childhood friend, Peter Edmonton.

Unrequited love hurts, but it hurts even more when the object of affection is in love with another. Jasper Reed has been working at Delacroix’s for a decade. He’s saved enough to retire, yet he remains at the decadent London brothel. Leaving would mean leaving Nate and the hope someday the rugged gentleman would stop pining for his best friend and realize he loves Jasper, just as Jasper loves him.

Edmonton’s impending marriage looms before them, causing Jasper to take another look at his stubborn heart. Yet Jasper’s a bastard whore, and Nate’s the nephew of a viscount. Surely there can’t be any hope for them…

Honorary Blogger Lilah Suzanne: Funny Things Are Everywhere + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Funny Things Are Everywhere

by Lilah Suzanne

Am I funny? Well, I was named funniest girl in my fourth grade end of year superlatives. If that’s not a ringing endorsement I don’t know what is.

I do think I am, and I also think the book is funny, but the risk with humor is often taking the chance of it not quite landing with everyone the way it’s intended to. Maybe that’s why there aren’t that many rom coms in romance, a genre that tends to rely heavily on drama and angst. There’s nothing wrong with drama and angst, of course! I certainly read my fair share. But humor tugs on the heartstrings in a different way, a sometimes more subtle way, and I think it can be easier to dismiss it as less meaningful, just because we’re laughing at it. But really important stories and moments can be funny ones, and characters that stick with us are often the ones that makes us smile.

I think readers will recognize Spice as a romantic comedy, and like any good rom com, I hope they come away from Benji and Simon’s story with warmth and affection, and if all I can contribute to the world in any small way is more joy and laughter, than that is more than enough for me.

I feel like I should end this with a joke. Okay: What is a machine that can be used to get spices from the future? A thyme machine. (It’s a spice joke, get it?)  (I’m sorry.)

Honorary Blogger Jane Davitt: Reading, Writing, and Math + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Reading, Writing, and Math

by Jane Davitt

Word limits are useful when I write, but sometimes they’re an ever-receding goal. For instance, for this post, I have a limit of 500-750 words. I aim to give good value and I’m an over-achiever, so let’s go for 750. What do I have to say that can fill 750 words?

Let’s break this down.

I’m a fan of drabbles. They’re short stories that have to be 100 words exactly, not counting title. 101 won’t cut it and neither will 99. So this is seven and a half drabbles long.

Would it be easier if it were longer? A story has a shape to it. A beginning, a middle, and, of course, in my line of work, not just an ending but a happily ever after. So assuming a novel is around 80-100,000 words, if you’re at 60,000 and the lead characters haven’t had any contact at all, there could be a problem. Pacing takes practice, but after a while you get a feel for it.

A daily word limit helps to keep me on track. I do some math. A book of say 80,000 words needs to be handed in on such and such a date. That’s 65 days away. Let’s ignore weekends; I’m always busy then with the family around me, jobs to do, soccer to watch if it’s that time of the year, food shopping to take care of. Stuff. So that leaves me with 57 working days. A tap or two on the calculator and I need to do 1403 words a day. Let’s round up to allow for days when I can’t write. Call it 1500.

No, wait. That’s pathetic. 2000! Yes! I can do 2000. My daughter and husband leave at eight. An hour to dress, tidy up, and see to my Neopets (addicted to Neopets do not judge me!) and I can start writing at nine. I have peace and quiet until 2.30. Allowing for coffee breaks and lunch, that gives me, uh, four hours to write. Oh, I can slurp coffee and write at the same time. Four and a half hours.

More math. 2000 divided by 270, then  multiplied by 60 is 444.444444 words an hour.

That is so easy! A little over a drabble every fifteen minutes.

Day one usually goes well. I greet my family with a beaming smile and announce the good news; 2,312 words!

Day two, I read them over, tweak, change, edit, and lose 56 of them before I start. Darn. Halfway through the day, I realize I need to research the wildflowers of Patagonia and bam, there goes a chuck of precious time.

Day three, I’m blocked.

Day four, breakthrough! I write 4,000 words and love the world.

Day five, on a roll. The characters are alive, words pour out of my head and I can’t type fast enough to keep up. I use my two middle fingers and stare down at the keyboard which is probably why. It’s touch typing of sorts, but not really.

Day six my back aches so much I can barely sit at the computer. Writing doesn’t burn many calories but it’s hell on the back and hands. It’s the weekend though, so I relax.

Monday rolls around and I sigh and chip out a grudging couple of hundred. I’ll make it up tomorrow. Or maybe Wednesday.

Rinse and repeat.

And it sounds as if I hate my job. That it’s a chore. And it isn’t. I’ve been writing for over a decade now and nothing can stop me. I began in fanfic and moved to original m/m novels and made writing my career, but it was the first step that was the important one.

Once you discover the high of sharing a jumble of thoughts with another person through the medium of words (it’s like telepathy! How cool is that?) there’s no going back. There’s a scene in a Robert Heinlein book called ‘The Cat Who Walks Through Walls’ where a writer gets married and his wife asks if he enjoys writing.

“No one enjoys writing,” he replies.

She points out that she’s rich, so he can stop.

“Thank you, my love. But I did not explain to you the other insidious aspect of writing. There is no way to stop. Writers go on writing long after it becomes financially necessary…because it hurts less to write than it does to stop.”

Writing this didn’t hurt. Much. But I’ve reached 750 words now, so I’ll stop.

Honorary Blogger M.A. Church: Simon Says… Write that Sequel! + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Simon Says… Write that Sequel!

by M.A. Church

LOL, I knew when writing Shadows there would be a book for Simon and Hawk. *Grin* I was informed of this by Simon—who was very vocal about the many ideas he had concerning his mate, their problems, and how to solve them. Oh my God, was he ever. And once he got to yakking in my ear, it was hard to ignore him. Simon is hard to ignore period He’s not the shy and retiring type, as Hawk found out.

Simon is very opinionated and outspoken. He has that bulldog mentality. As much fun as I had writing Chip and Jason from Shadows, Simon is the one who really spoke to me. He grew on me as Shadows progressed.

There’s just something about him, lol, that’s hard to forget. It’s kind of funny—even though this series is actually about Native Americans—Simon is the one who sparked book #2, not Hawk. But Simon is the one who spoke to me.

The plot actually came from something Simon and Chip talked about in book #1, so the idea was already there; I just had to expand it. I knew Simon was going to be the more outrageous one of the two, and that Hawk was going to have… issues—shall we say—and a past that haunted him. All that was left was for me to figure out how to bring the two together. As it turned out, I had some Divine intervention in the form of Wha-tay!

blogger_bee_trans

About To Touch the Sky

ToTouchTheSkyLGHe can run, but he can’t hide…

Centuries ago, Hawk made a terrible mistake which has haunted him since. Fear of responsibility and feelings of unworthiness leads him to denying the mate Wha-tay showed him in a vision. So now Hawk runs his bar, has casual sex, and never, ever dates men with blond hair and brown eyes. But then Simon walks into his bar, and the future he’s feared is about to end up in a brawl if Hawk doesn’t do something—fast.

Simon Carter has a smart mouth and a bulldog temperament. So when Hawk runs, Simon pursues the sexy man, only to be rejected. Just as Simon decides to give up, someone—or something—visits him to change his mind… and scares him to death. Now Simon is backpedaling, and Hawk is in pursuit.

Desperate to reassure Simon and keep him safe, Hawk is forced to reveal his secrets before he’s ready. Can Simon learn to accept things aren’t always as they seem? Is the connection between them strong enough to help Hawk overcome centuries of pain? The only way the two men will move beyond Hawk’s past is for both of them to take a leap of faith.

Out of The Blue by RJ Jones: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Out of the Blue

by RJ Jones

A week after my date with Cam, I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when a huge bouquet of red roses came walking through the door of Caroline’s apartment.

“These are for you.” Caroline’s disembodied voice came from behind the largest floral arrangement I’d ever seen.

“Who’re they from?”

“Give you one guess, Mr. Oblivious,” she grumbled as she placed the flowers on the counter.

“Why would he send me roses? I’m not a girl.”

I opened the attached card and two tickets for the 49ers vs the Bears preseason game fell out onto the counter.

I know you’re not a girl. The roses are for Caroline. I’ll pick you up at 1pm 🙂

I pushed the arrangement over to her. “They’re for you.”

“Ah, the old best-friend buyoff. He’s sucking up to both of us. He’s not all that stupid, is he?” Caroline asked, looking over my shoulder at the card and tickets.

“You know what he’s doing, don’t you?” Caroline asked.

“Taking me to the Bears game?” I took a closer look at the tickets. Seats on the fifty-yard line in two days’ time.

“No, dumbass, he’s wooing you.”

“Wooing?”

“Yes, he’s dating you. He’s taking you back to the beginning. He wants you to get to know the new Cameron Cooper. You know, I never thought he’d do it this way, I just thought he’d ask you to come home and not take no for an answer.”

That’s what I’d thought too.

About RJ Jones

I started as a reader and eventually made the progression to reviewing. It wasn’t until two men pop into my thoughts, insisting on telling me their story that I started to write. It started with one scene. A hot and dirty one in the shower.

My initial thought was if I could write their scene then they’d shut up and allow me to concentrate on other aspects of my day. That shower scene was 3000 words long and three hours of work.  But they didn’t shut up.  They told me their entire story and I didn’t sleep for days.  Sometimes I couldn’t keep up with what they were telling me and I had to keep a notebook by my bed.

Whilst I was writing their story a side character decided he needed his story told too. Then other characters followed suit.

You see the problem? If I ever want to sleep again then I need to write.

I’m a wife and a mother to two boys. Even my dog is a boy.

I am surrounded by males.

Honorary Blogger A.E. Via: My Characters + Exclusive Excerpt!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

My Characters

by A.E. Via

I’m so excited to be back on the Blogger Girls site. These ladies have been very supportive of my work and I can’t thank them enough.

I’m introducing two new characters that have become very near and dear to my heart. This book is about the life of a wrongly convicted man – Llewellyn Gardner, and a man that’s willing to see past Llew’s record and recognize the man that he is inside; construction business owner – Shane Smith, Jr.

I was very nervous about this book and the topic. I’m used to writing big bad alphas that ooze testosterone but aren’t afraid to love and love hard. My Llewellyn is the complete opposite. His is big and hard but only because the environment he was forced into made him that way. He is gentle and kind on the inside, but again, he’s reluctant to trust and especially to love.

I hope you will enjoy it and I would love to hear what you think.

About Defined By Deceit

25101993Life isn’t always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything.

Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?

Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn’t going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.

Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

An Excerpt from Defined By Deceit

“Thinking of going in? Or are you just gonna block the entrance?”

Llew turned at the sound of the sure voice behind him. Since he seemed to tower over everyone he looked down at the pretty brunette with dark brown eyes to match. “Um. Sorry.” Llew mumbled quickly moving out of her way.

“Well don’t be sorry shuga’, just escort a lady inside.” Llew didn’t blink as he watched the lady stalk towards him. Her full chest sat above an extremely narrow waist. It almost looked unnatural. She dressed and wore the amount of makeup that a grown woman would, but her smooth face and approach screamed her real age. She was jailbait if he’d ever seen one. Llew gave her a slight head nod and turned to leave when his elbow was hooked.

“I saw you in the general store applying for a job. You musta’ jus’ got into town, because if not I’d have known, honey. So you got kin here?”

Silence.

The laugh was an all-out immature giggle and it graded on his nerves. “Cat got your tongue, darlin’”. She moved in even closer and dragged a long red nail down Llew’s arm, tilting her head back to look up at him. “You want me to beg, huh? Come on now, handsome. Escort a lady to a movie… then maybe -”

“Maybe when he sees’ a lady… he’ll escort one.”

Llew diverted his attention away from the overzealous minx that was practically humping his leg and focused on the beautiful man approaching with another guy in tow. His voice wasn’t overly deep like his own, it was a smooth and melodic southern drawl. Like he could be a singer or a poet. He walked with an unhurried gait that was a mixture of ‘I’m in charge’ and ‘you’re on my time, not the other way around’, and Llew found it sexy as fuck. His tall friend chuckled behind him, moving away to purchase their tickets. Is he on a date? No, their demeanor definitely said ‘friends.’

“Mind ya’ own business Smith, Jr. I saw him first.”

Smith, Jr.

The man hooked one thumb in his pocket not the slightest bit fazed at the remark. But Llew was thrown. Was this guy actually gay or was she being a smart aleck? The man gave him nothing to go on. He moved closer towards them and Llew got a nice whiff of his spicy, bold cologne when a cool breeze blew his way. It was an interesting contradiction, because the man’s entire persona said ‘cool and composed’.

“Mosey along, Sallie Ann. Don’t make me ring ya’ daddy. He told me keep an eye on you while he’s gone and I agreed. He’d be rather put out if I didn’t follow through on my promise.”

She reluctantly let go of his arm, letting loose a long drawn out huff of annoyance. Llew didn’t bother watching her walk away. She was irrelevant. With his hands tucked deep in his pockets he eyed the man in front of him with a mixture of curiosity and wistfulness.

“Sometimes a person has gotta’ run interference with that girl. She’s usually not that bad but her daddy’s outta’ town, so ya’ know how young girls can be.”

Actually, not really.

“Hi. I’m Shane Smith, Jr.” he stuck out a large, calloused hand and it took Llew a couple seconds to process that he was going to touch him. Llew shook his hand, his mouth still closed tight as he watched the man’s eyes. They were light brown and full of humor and amusement. He immediately thought that this was obviously a guy who had little worries if any in life. Wait a minute…Smith….Jr. Is he the owner of? He let go of the strong grip on his hand and wished he’d been able to hold it a little longer.

“And you are?”

Llew swallowed before answering. “Llew.”

Those eyes twinkled again and dark brown brows rose up in question. “Llew…just Llew.”

It was a humiliation when a man hated to tell someone his name. But by doing so it meant that they would soon know who he really was. Know who he was classified as. He didn’t want this man to know that, god help him he didn’t. But lying wasn’t an option. Fuck it. “Llewellyn Gardner.”

So many broke eye contact with him and Llew was more than intrigued that Mr. Shane Smith, Jr. was staring at him just as hard as he was staring back. He didn’t know why he was looking at him that way but he didn’t mind it.

“Now that’s a name.” Smith smiled beautifully.

Llew wasn’t sure if this guy was flirting with him or not, he’d been in a place where flirting didn’t exist for so long, he’d forgotten what it looked like…what it sounded like. The way Shane Smith, Jr. was smiling at him it sure seemed like it. Llew could imagine himself with a strong man like this. A man who was gorgeous but didn’t know it. Not overly done up in fancy digs, he was dressed like a working man but he wore that look well. He appeared simple but confident, like a man that followed his own counsel and was not easily persuaded. But Llew wouldn’t dare get his hopes up. As soon as word got out that there was a newly registered sex offender in their quaint little town, Smith, Jr. might be leading the lynch mob to run him out of there.

Acceptance Brings Change

by Thianna D

Some people look on spanking as just something you do to kids, some people look at it as a sick fetish. To others, it is just for fun. And yet, also for a segment of the population, spanking is also used as a form of discipline. Strangely enough, some of the stuff we are most attracted to, society makes us ashamed of. That kind of shame can eat at a person. Coming out of that shame, can also give you the freedom you need to overcome almost any obstacle in your way.

That’s how things are for Christian. After coming back from Afghanistan, broken both physically and mentally, he doesn’t see much of a future for himself. Meeting Logan is a surprise, especially because it brings up the slight interest he had in men – an interest he had denied for a long time. But Logan doesn’t just bring out his sexual need, he also brings out a kink that Christian has been hiding for a long time – the desire to be spanked.

For someone like Christian for whom spanking is a fetish, being spanked by Logan opens his eyes to the fact that maybe he isn’t bad or wrong for accepting something he has been dreaming about for years. He comes out of the closet to his family, finds a therapist to help him with his PTSD, and works at making himself the kind of man Logan deserves. In doing so, he becomes stronger and frees the man inside who has been hiding for far too long.

And isn’t that we all wish for? I am violently against shame and what it can do to people and to the body. Accepting parts of ourselves we have always denied or put down, finding others who are accepting of it as well, is liberating, good for the body, and for one’s mental health as well. Shame should be outlawed in my opinion.

About As Natural As Breathing

As Natural as BreathingFor Christian Darringer, life isn’t worth living. Just back from the Middle East; scarred and with permanent damage to one leg, he does not think anyone will want him for anything. Meeting a gorgeous man he finds himself thinking about constantly is not in his plans. Pulled toward the startling younger man with striking blue eyes, he begins to question a lot of things – especially his sexuality. Not one to hide from a challenge, he plunges ahead only to find himself more than just attracted to Logan who is full of life and joy, he finds himself head over heels in love.

Logan Mannette has almost everything he ever wanted: loving parents, happiness, friends and security. The only thing missing is finding the love of his life, a love that is just like his parents’. When he meets Christian at a party, everything changes. Instantly attracted, he does his best to help this sad man and quickly finds himself feeling more than he has ever felt before. Raised in a domestic discipline household, he holds that ideal as what he wants but his interest in spanking became a fetish and when Christian admits that he wants to be spanked, Logan believes he might have found the perfect man.

Just as everything begins for them, Christian’s past intercedes and one of his brothers makes waves about him dating a man. If it weren’t for Logan’s support, he might fold; but with the love of one amazing man, Christian finds that living his life rather than just existing is as natural as breathing.

Honorary Blogger Nico Jaye: Chicago and Wisconsin + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Chicago and Wisconsin

by Nico Jaye

Hi! Thank you so much to The Blogger Girls for inviting me to chat a little about my new book, He’s Just Knot That Into You. I had a lot of fun writing this fluffy werewolf novella and am excited for you to meet Tanner and Jon. =) Right now I’m touring the web to talk about the book, how it came about, my processes—and anything else that comes to mind, to be honest. Of course, a blog tour wouldn’t be complete without a giveaway, so please check out those details at the end of the post!

HJKTIY is set partly in Chicago, partly in the woods of Wisconsin. Chicago has a special place in my heart after I lived there for three years during grad school. Sure, grad school was tough, but the city made it some of the most fun years of my life. There were jazz clubs. And great restaurants. And my little studio apartment along Lake Michigan.

And, of course, who can forget Wrigley Field? Its iconic red-and-white marquee and its famous ballpark franks make Wrigley Field one of a kind in the baseball world. When I lived in Chicago, I spent many a game there and enjoyed the setting immensely.

Tanner and Jon spend some time in Chicago throughout HJKTIY. I had fun revisiting the area through photos and memories, and I hope I did the Second City justice.

The latter half of HJKTIY takes place north of Chicago, in the woods of northern Wisconsin. Although I’d been to Wisconsin—indeed, I’d even stayed in the woods there—it’d been a while since I’d visited, and I wasn’t nearly as familiar with Wisconsin as I was with my daily lifestyle in Chicago.

Hence…research! Is anyone shocked that I discovered Vilas County through the beauty of the Internet? *hears crickets*

By this point you all know how awesome the Internet is for research. Heck, the Internet is awesome, period. I’m saying hello to you through the Internet, after all. =) And, yes, I mean official research in this case, and not the tumblr binges I find myself on when I want a distraction to see some pretties and shinies on there. 😉

Anyway, I digress! We all know the Internet is awesome. Yup, established and accepted into evidence. What I didn’t know was the breadth of information available about this random little corner of northwest Wisconsin that I was determined to feature as the setting of Jon’s family home.

Photo - Autumn in the Northwoods(Used with permission of Life in the Northwoods)

Lucky for me there was a wonderful nature photographer who had a veritable bevy of inspiring photos on his site, Life in the Northwoods. Check it out and you’ll see what I mean. Just the variety of animals and scenery really had my imagination going. Add to that this amazing vacation home I found in the area, and I was all set.

In He’s Just Knot That Into You, I had a lot of fun with the setting—both going down memory lane to revisit Chicago and discovering gorgeous Vilas County, Wisconsin, through the powers of the Internet. =) If you decide to check out the book, I hope you’ll get a taste of the city and backwoods through Tanner and Jon’s eyes.

An Excerpt from He’s Just Knot That Into You

A note from Nico: Some of you might be wondering what First Shift means to an alpha werewolf in this universe. Well…here’s a little taste of the opening scene. Hope you like it!

He’d suspected nine days ago, but he hadn’t dared to hope.

This night, though, with the first full moon since he’d started at Dilarium, confirmed it.

Curled up on his side in the living room of his subleased townhome, Tanner gritted his teeth, his eyes squeezing shut as he felt the irrepressible movement of bones shifting beneath his skin. The silky carpet was cool and soft against his cheek, and he pressed his face into it, struggling with that over which he had absolutely no control. His body was on fire, his blood pumping through his veins at supersonic speed. An invisible spike pierced his fingertips, one by one, while his jaw rearranged itself on his face.

“AaaaaaaaAAAAAGGGHHH!”

He couldn’t hold back the scream that ripped through him as he felt his spine stretch, then curve, turning him into that one elusive form he’d craved for all of these years: werewolf.

A First Shift was supposed to be the hardest.

The first time bone broke and mended in its transformation into that creature of the night. The first time claws extended, pointed tips puncturing nail beds to replace human fingers. The first time fangs punched out, the teeth of a hunter replacing those of a benign human.

A First Shift was shocking. It was thrilling. It was painful.

Above all, it was exhilarating.

A First Shift meant he had found his mate.

About Nico Jaye

Nico Jaye is a fan of all things HEA and has dragged her romance collection along for her moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Chicago to New York and back. She thinks reading is awesome and loves that she can hang out night after night with crinoline-wearing debutantes, brawny firemen in suspenders, and werewolf shifters with Scottish brogues. An overall feline enthusiast, Nico secretly (or not so secretly?) adores Hello Kitty, cat GIFs, spontaneous traveling, pretending to be crafty, emoticons, hot menfolk, and parenthetical statements (not necessarily in that order). After starting as the pitcher for Team Awesome (literally) and visiting places like South Africa, Oman, and Fiji, Nico discovered that letting the boys in her head tell her where they want to go could actually be the most exciting journey of all.
