An Overlooked Opportunity: A Behind the Scene Excerpt of Accused
by Leona Windwalker
Varto smiled to himself. Surely this was an opportunity not to be missed! Withe the human home world now open to limited trade and human Volunteers coming to the station, there was money to be made providing them with home comforts. Home comforts that just happened to appeal to more than just humans.
Blix had profited at the food store, importing some of their foodstuffs. J’norah had gotten himself a Starbucks franchise, introducing the drink known as coffee. Varto was a cabinet maker though- how could he take advantage of this?
Word is that Commander is bringing home a human Sachari- surely he will wish to spend credits transforming their home into something familiar. Hmmm. Sachari are nurturers. Nurturers provide comfort. Comfort- food. Food- kitchen. Human kitchens no doubt are different from those found in the Talani Alliance. Yes, something to help make this like home, like comfort.
Varto picked up his data pad, opening an information search for ‘traditional kitchens- Earth’. He eyed the results. Wait, this result looked promising. It was a site that shared pictures by topic. He selected the Earth site. Ah, traditional to humans means old-fashioned. ‘Retro’ they call it, and it’s a thing. A popular thing. Yes, yes. Warm memories of old-fashioned cabinets and older appliances like your parent or their parent had. Getting comfort while nurturing your own young. He selected the most popular images, downloaded them, and saved them to a file. He couldn’t provide the human style appliances, but the cabinetry he could do. Now all he had to do was wait. The Sachari would come, and he would be waiting. And as the Commander’s mate, he will set a style trend. He smiled toothily. Yes, sir, the credits will come rolling in. I might even be able to franchise my designs. Varto’s Retro Relics. Hmm. I should see if I could partner with an engineer to design Talani appliances that look like the human old-fashioned ones. The look would then be complete. Not yet, though, he reminded himself. First to turn a profit on the cabinetry. Then roll out a complementary line, followed by franchise opportunities.
He leaned back in his chair, dreaming of credits and the accolades of his family as he became an Esteemed Trader. And they thought I was going to amount to nothing opening a shop on a training outpost. An overlooked opportunity, that’s what this was. After all, it’s not just a training outpost. It’s a Talani Trade Alliance outpost, and trade means credit. Credits mean position. I’ll end up in a higher hierarchy than dear old Niktil. That’ll wipe the mile right off his face, and instead of fawning over him, the family will see me for the shrewd businessman that I truly am. Esteemed Trader, that has a nice ring to it. Now to just wait for the human Sachari to arrive and begin to make their standard quarters his home.
The front door chime sounded, alerting Varto to a waiting customer. He stood, schooling his expression into one of welcome. Crossing the showroom floor, he beamed at the customer he found browsing. “Why hello. What can I help you with today?” he asked.
Matthias Reynolds loves his life. He’s starting to make it as a graphic artist at last and has a job he really likes at a local cafe that pays the bills. He’s aware of the larger universe, as his best friend Duane works at the Talani Trade Alliance’s embassy and recruitment ads for humans to accept training and jobs on their worlds is an everyday occurrence. When a night out clubbing leads to an awkward morning after, he’s embarrassed and more than ready to forget all about it. When Talani Enforcers show up at the cafe, he doesn’t know what to make of it all as he’s lead away in restraints.
Standing accused of crimes he struggles to understand, he finds he has an unexpected champion: the Talani warrior and war hero J’nah Quislin. J’nah knows that Matty is his. All J’nah has to do is keep Matty safe from those who engineered Matty’s charges and sentencing. That, and get Matty to accept that universe always intended them to be together as one. All it requires is to return his devotion and willing submission. Can Matty do it, with all that it will mean for his future?

About Leona Windwalker
Leona is a longtime staunch supporter of human rights and environmental causes. Her favourite genre to read is M/M fiction and she particularly enjoys science fiction, fantasy, and action/suspense sub-genres—especially if they have a nice seasoning of romance. She has far too many books on her Kindle, has overloaded her phone with even more and, when not reading, writing, being driven to distraction by her children, or being overlorded by her three cats, can be found trying to locate the portal that the sock monster uses to steal socks from her dryer.
Recent head-reeling news for her included her novel Jared:Urban Wolves #1 being nominated for an Indie Award from Metamorph and placing as a finalist in the 2016 Rainbow Awards, earning an Honorable Mention. She’s still suspicious that it’s all been a dream, but as long as her readers are happy and she can find at least one of the missing socks, she’s happy.
