Objects in the Rearview Mirror:
He was immersed in red light as the brakes of the car that hit him were stomped. Pain seared through Alan as he tried to raise his head off the pavement. Blood ran from his nose and mouth, and he barely registered the screams of people telling the woman she had hit someone and to stop. As Alan lifted his head, he caught sight of the woman staring at him in her rearview mirror. The cold satisfaction in her insane clown eyes made him shiver. If you only knew I stood up to your husband for you and your kid, Alan thought as the red lights of her brakes turned white. He’d ceased to be a person and had simply become an object of disdain and disgust. He closed his eyes once more as the sound of squealing tires and screaming pedestrians filled the air… *** On Frederick Street, in Clay Center, Kansas, in the house he’d once loved, in a familiar room, in a familiar bed that hadn’t been slept in for almost three years, Alan opened his eyes to the sound of a gunshot…and then the nightmare began.
