Q&A with Phillip Hill and Character Interview with Marcus and Toby from Portal to Logres

Interview Banner

Philiip Ambrose had just published his first novel, “Portal to Logres” through Wilde City Press. It’s an epic fantasy but at the heart of it and running through the book is a fascinating and full-blooded romance between two students, Marcus and Toby.

Q: Phillip, tell us why have you published your first novel now?

A: For many years I was a public servant in the UK and my day job was to write official papers, briefs and letters. I have aspired to write a novel for years (since I was a teenager I suppose, but it was very difficult to balance my full-time job with creative writing. The styles were just too different! At work I had to write in a succinct unemotional and detached way that avoided adjectives or anything remotely imaginative. If, when I got home, I tried to write in a different way the results were about as interesting and readable as a legal document!

I was describing the problem to a sympathetic colleague one day, and  said that if I tried to write a love scene, it came out strangled – something along the lines of “I came, I saw I conquered!”. “That’s wrong,” joked my friend, “It would have to be ‘I saw, I conquered, I came!’ Your version would be premature ejaculation!”

After an evening trying to be creative, I’d return to work with my creative juices flowing, and that ‘contaminated’ my official work. I’d get told off. So, while I made notes for stories, planned and scribbled, I didn’t complete anything and began to feel I never would!

Then I retired and stumbled across m/m fiction. I read some great books and the genre connected with my own sexuality. It seemed to free me and the ideas began to flow. Encouragement from a warm and terrific published writer in the field led me to complete the first draft of “Portal to Logres” in little more than a month. My ‘mentor’ suggested I make a pitch to a publisher and to my amazement the book was picked up. A second volume (actually the continuation of one very long story) will appear soon.

In short, retirement has provided me with the opportunity to do what I have always wanted to do. And m/m fiction is a vehicle that I love.

Q: Why did you choose to write an M/M romance?

A: Well, first off, I’m a gay man, so relationships between men are something I know a bit about; have some interest in; and are something I want to explore. I feel comfortable with the genre and the ideas it generates.

The fact that I was writing about two men (rather than a man and a woman) seemed to free me. I lost my inhibitions and felt at ease with what I was doing.

Finally, as an author writing in this area, I can take any character I want and put him in any situation I want. I’ve said to people before now, I am unlikely ever to have a relationship with a handsome Hollywood star, but as a writer I can create such a character and do with him whatever I want. I find that exciting, intriguing and fulfilling.

I suppose you could say, m/m stories allow me to bring my fantasies to life!

Q: How is your ‘epic fantasy’ different to others?

A: “Portal to Logres” is about two young men who get transported to a parallel universe, akin to Tudor England.

Actually, there are TWO fantasy worlds in the book. One is Logres (of which more in a moment). The other is a fictional university city in 1970s Britain, where the story begins. Thus I had to create and make live the ‘modern’ setting as well as the ‘fantasy’ one.

As far as Logres is concerned, the reader can treat (and hopefully enjoy) it as they would any other fantasy world. But for anyone interested in history there are a couple of other aspects to it. First of all, they can play the game of identifying the parallels from our own history both in the characters and the places. I’m not going to give too much away, but I will say that many of the characters do reflect ‘real’ historical people, sometimes quite straightforwardly, sometimes in combinations of traits or roles.

Secondly, I am interested in what is sometimes known as “alternative history”. I try to explore what might have happened if…? The Tudor period is full of such moments. Some of them will unfold in the Logres books. To take one example: Elizabeth I almost died of smallpox only a few years after taking the throne. What would have happened if she had died? It would certainly have changed English history – civil war? A return to Catholicism under Mary Queen of Scots? By changing the details and fictionalising the individuals involved, I find it easier to get away from the “but she didn’t die” syndrome and to explore that alternatives. I hope readers will enjoy that adventure too.

Q: How do you go about writing – plotting, creating characters etc?

A: I’d like to say that my two lead characters, Toby and Marcus sprang fully-fledged from my head, but they didn’t.

“Portal to Logres” was my first completed book and I had to learn as I went, but plot and characters began as separate threads which soon began to influence and change each other.

Marcus is a young fencer with Olympic potential. That came about because I felt one of my two principal actors needed a fighting skill in a sixteenth-century style world. Sword fighting then was different to what it is now, but at least he would have some knowledge that might be useful and allow him to survive.

While Toby and Marcus were pretty real and complete in my head, I did consciously set out the similarities and distinctions between them so that they would be clearly differentiated in the reader’s mind. Thus Toby became noticeably shorter than his lover. One is fair, one is dark. One is stocky, one is athletic and lean.

I think the lessons I have learned from the plot are:

1. Work both ways – from start to finish and from the climax backwards;

2. Be clear about the ending. You can make it more dramatic and change it, but have something to work towards.

3. Don’t worry about the opening. I used to get completely hung up about this. I know you don’t need to! Finish the book and how it starts will suggest itself. “Portal to Logres” started with a flash-forward to the moment the two students arrive in Logres. At almost the last moment that was changed and the book now unfolds chronologically. The reasons for my earlier decision were no longer valid.

I hope that these thoughts might be useful to anyone thinking of starting a book.

What I am most proud of, is that I have achieved what I always wanted to do.  I have long wanted to write a gay fantasy. But I did not simply want to ‘token’ gay men doing what all fantasy heroes always do. In “Portal to Logres” I believe that, rather like the double-helix of DNA, the romance and the adventure unfold together and are unbreakably intertwined.

Q: What do you most like about your two main characters?

A: In a sentence, Marcus’ vulnerability under an outwardly confident manner and Toby’s niceness and openness.

A friend tells me that I like Marcus more than Toby, and I do talk about him more, but I do love both of them very much. They are two people I would like to meet in real life, and at times they have written their own story – certainly some scenes.

Toby is totally out of his comfort zone in Logres, Indeed, he’s scared out of his wits at times. But his intelligence makes him fascinated by his new surroundings. Equally, Marcus feelings for him and his own for Marcus mean that he is living a dream come true. I find it incredible to see how that is changing the lad and how he comes to terms with everything that is happening to him.

Marcus too is changing. He’s always been a never-apologise-never-explain sort of guy. But now Toby’s presence in his life is allowing him to open up, to reveal deep insecurities, but also barriers he has created in himself which seem to prevent him accepting the love being offered to him.

They are two very different individuals, but their love for each other – once they accept it – is strong. How they explore that and each other is at the very core of the story.

Q: Do you find explicit sex scenes difficult to write?

A: I have always enjoyed reading explicit sexual scenes (gay, straight or bi) so I suppose it follows that I would enjoy writing them.

I did amuse me though, when a friend who has read the book once asked, “Have you done all the things that you write about?” Since “Portal to Logres” includes beings being killed and ‘occult’ episodes (and I have neither killed anyone nor engaged in black magic) I am not sure why it is assumed that I have ‘enjoyed’ all the sexual things mentioned.

I believe that good sex scenes should arise naturally out of the story and the personalities of the characters involved. I like to write about lads who have a high sex drive, so it follows the sex (or at least sexual situations) will be pretty frequent and ‘hot’.

I am currently experimenting with a story that is told through the sex, and I am an admirer of – and would like to write – stories that are carried or driven by the sex. Geoffrey Knight and James Lear write the sort of stories I am talking about, where the sex is the main event in each chapter and is used to extract information or take the plot on to the next character or situation.

I have learned from descriptions of sex scenes and derived fantasies from books I have read. I hope I can be an inspiration for others. Equally, I am put off by sex scenes that seem impractical or are unclear. Hence, I feel the scenes should be explicit and vividly descriptive.

I tend to approach sex scenes in a series of ‘waves’; first outlining the location and blocking out what happens physically. Second, fleshing out the detail and ensuring it all works. Finally adding the emotion and perhaps ensuring that the ‘viewpoint’ is the correct one.

One complication is the issue of ‘safe sex’. I am a great believer in and practitioner of safe sex, but it can be anachronistic. I also believe that great care has to be taken with subjects like under-age sex (though many characters might have experienced it); non-consensual sex (though it might be appropriate in certain plots) including rape; and some aspects of kinkier sex.

But I do hope readers enjoy what I have written and I am not embarrassed about it in any way…

Q: Why is the book split into two parts? Was splitting to book difficult for you?

A: “Portal to Logres” was written as a single book.

I understand that publishers have limits on the size of books and thus was ready to break the story into two.

This was not difficult, but did involve making sure that there was an ‘ending’ to Book One, as well as a ‘hook’ that (hopefully) will incline readers to look for Book Two.

You will need to read both halves to get the most out of the story.

Mar: Why’s he want us here?

Tob: Why ask me? Ask him.

Mar: Well, you’re the bright one, sunshine. You normally know what’s occurring.

Tob: Not this time. Haven’t we got enough to do in the book?

Mar: I’d say so. Hey! Do you think he wants to get us naked again?

Tob: Not that you need any encouragement, Marcus!

Mar: When did you ever complain?

Tob: I didn’t. I can see why he likes to get you stripped down. Same reason I do!

Mar: Which is?

Tob: Well, you are eye-catching. You look good in the buff, all that toned flesh not to mention…

Mar: Don’t go there!

Tob: Not embarrassed are you?

Mar: Maybe….

Tob: All that public school education. Cold showers in the dorm before breakfast. Communal showers after the match, all that sort of thing?

Mar: Well, you play football. Don’t you take showers with your teammates?

Tob: Did I deny it?

Mar: You’re just winding me up! Anyway you look good naked too. You have muscles, I don’t.

Tob: Like my muscles do you?

Mar: Mmmnnnhhhh! Can’t get enough of them. Hey, is all this talk making you horny?

Tob: Not just the talk… but I think Phil wanted us to talk about the book.

Mar: Oh… two fingers to the book. You’re here and you look sexy as hell. Goldilocks!

Tob: Don’t call me that!

Mar: OK, if you insist. I think the name fits you though. Hey! You’re unbuttoning my shirt!

Tob: Yeah. Can’t keep my hands of you. Never could, never will…..

Mar: Oh no! You know what that does to me!

Tob: You have the most suckable nipples I’ve ever seen…

Mar: Awwwww!!!

About Phillip Hill

Whatever his chronological age, Philip Ambrose has never really grown up, still has the enthusiasms of an eleven year old and is happiest in a world of imagination and invention. He has a passion for history (real or invented) especially historical mysteries from the “princes” in the Tower; Jack the Ripper, ancient Egypt, the Wars of the Roses and military history. Perhaps that interest relates to having been brought up in an English Cathedral City where each day he was surrounded by Roman and medieval buildings. Now retired, Philip Ambrose was for almost forty years in the public service but could not possibly comment on whether that affected his writing style! Writing for publication has always been an aspiration but was not a realistic prospect until work was behind him. Today he lives surrounded by books and and loves meeting people, enjoying a good meal, conversation and reading as well as writing the sort of books he would like to read.

Q&A with Garrett Leigh + Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Interview with Garrett Leigh

Tell us about your latest release!

Misfits is my first attempt at M/M/M (ménage). I’ve read many threeway books and I’ve always come away feeling that the plot was written around a bunch of crass sex scenes. Misfits is the ménage book I wanted to read. The sex, though it’s there (trust me, it’s there…) was put on the back burner, and instead I took three men who came at life from totally different perspectives and tried to weave them together into a book with a little soul. If I’ve succeeded in any small way, I’m happy.

Is this title part of a series? Without giving us spoilers, of course, what can we expect from the next e-books/books in the series?

There is a very small possibility I might write Nero’s story. Nero is a grumpy Spanish chef who works for Urban Soul, the company Tom and Cass own. He has a chip on his shoulder and a missing finger on one of his hands. Jake thinks he’s hot, and I’m inclined to agree.

What do you have in store for readers in the future? What are you working on/planning on next, aside this title/series?

My next book will be a military novel from Riptide, out in November. I just have to finish writing the bugger…

Coffee or tea?

Rooibos tea. Myself and my lovely lover drink gallons of it. Or, rather, he does, and I leave half cold mugs all over the house. I do love the stuff, though. So much so, I wrote it into Only Love for Jed and Max to bond over.

Favorite season?

Early autumn or late spring. I’m not a fan of shivering or sweating…with my clothes on.

Favorite food for breakfast?

Depending on my mood, cold pizza, eggs of any kind on toast with hot sauce, or a fat bowl of porridge with dark brown sugar and crushed raspberries.

Latest book you’ve bought and read?

M/M wise, I’ve been on an RJ Scott binge. Out of the romance world, the last book I bought and read was City of Thieves, which was stunningly awesome. So much so, I’ve lent it out to so many people (for that, read, forced on them) I have no idea where it is.

Honorary Blogger: Renae Kaye Interviews Cardeno C.!

Renae Kaye Interviews Cardeno C.!

Thanks so much to the Blogger Girls for having me here. I have a habit of sharing release dates with the amazing Renae Kaye and we’re at it again (almost) right now. My book, Blue Mountain, releases today and Renae’s next book, Safe in His Arms, releases November 28th so we thought it’d be fun for Renae to interview me about Blue Mountain. “How is that connected?” you ask. I have no idea, but it gave the two of us a chance to chat, which is always welcome.

*****

Renae: Hi, Cardeno! Thanks for allowing me to interview you. I was so excited to see you have a new book out. Oooh – and a wolf pack one?

CC: Yes! I love shifter stories so I wanted to write another shifter collection. This one is novellas – each freestanding. The first one is called Blue Mountain.

Renae: The cover is gorgeous. Tell me – who does the covers for you, and how much input do you have into the design?

CC: Best question ever right out of the gate! This cover is really special to me because the artist is Jay Aheer, a reader. I have a Facebook Group, which is just a fun place for me to connect with readers and for readers to connect with each other. The group is pretty new so I’ve been getting to know people and Jay is one of those people. She is a cover artist and she shared some of her work. I immediately loved it, so when it was time for a cover for Blue Mountain, I went to Jay. It was a real joy for me to have someone with her talent, who also happens to be a reader, design the cover. (You can find information about Jay’s covers here.)

Renae: For those who don’t read shifter novels, what exactly is an Omega?

CC: In this particular universe, an Omega is a wolf whose nature is more submissive, calm, and sensitive than most wolves. They help a pack by binding members together and they derive great satisfaction from bringing happiness to other shifters.

Renae: Mitch sounds like a great Alpha wolf – patient and caring, but fierce when he needs to be. Is that what being an Alpha is all about?

CC: An Alpha’s primary function is to protect the pack. They keep everyone safe and help the pack prosper. Most shifters have predestined mates, who they put first in all things. But because Alphas have to focus on their pack, they’re granted mates only if they’re strong enough to both lead their packs well and cherish their mates as they were meant to be cherished. Mitch is a unique Alpha in that he has a twin brother who is also an Alpha. They have very different personalities that meld well to help the pack.

Renae: Which sort of character is your favourite? The Alpha? The underdog?

CC: I like both types of characters. It’s fun to write a tough guy Alpha whose strength is obvious, but it’s also wonderful to write about the underdog, whose strength shows in different ways.

Renae: I love opposites attract type of stuff. Is this what this is about? Does it have a HEA? (Prays Cardeno says yes).

CC: Yes, exactly! In this book, I got to write an Alpha who is so huge, strong, and powerful that even the people he dedicates his life to protecting fear him. And I got to write his mate — a submissive, small, beaten down Omega who has more strength than anyone the Alpha has ever known, himself included. (And don’t worry, there’s a HEA. Those are the only kinds of books I write.)

Renae: So this is the start of a new series? How many books do you anticipate being in the series?

CC: I think of my groupings as collections rather than series because each book is freestanding. For the Pack collection, I have a shifter universe with a set of rules and each book will live in that universe, but they’ll be independent. I have several books roughly sketched out. The next one will be called Red River.

Renae: Thanks again for the interview, and I am SO much looking forward to this.

CC: And I am beyond excited about Safe in His Arms. I love your books and this one sounds especially romantic. (And for anyone who hasn’t ordered it yet, you can get Safe in His Arms here.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Jordan Castillo Price

TBG: As part of our Vampire Week, one of our lovely guest reviewers, Morgan, was able to wrangle a short interview about the Channeling Morpheus/Sweet Oblivion series out of Jordan Castillo Price. Let’s see what JCP has to say to Morgan’s questions!

Interview Banner

M: Why the two names Channeling Morpheus/Sweet Oblivion for one series?

JCP: This was a decision by the original publisher. Since I found it confusing, when the rights to the series reverted to me, I established Sweet Oblivion as Channeling Morpheus 5-10, which is how I intended them from the outset.

M: You do your own covers, how do you pick the model?  Or did you have a model in mind when you wrote the character?

JCP: All the cover artists who work in the genre have the same pool of models to choose from. I try my best to find models who haven’t appeared on other books before, though this is really difficult to do. If I find a model appealing, chances are another cover designer does too. When I do find a model who looks like a certain character to me, I try to buy several different shots of him in case I end up doing a series or some spin-off shorts. And some models I just collect because I feel their photos are evocative, that there’s a story going on behind their eyes, and it may be a few years before a character comes along that they might fit. But I’ve never written a character to match a photo. My brain must not work that way.

M: Your covers are so amazing, so eye catching.  I read on Facebook one author felt that the cover was a key if not the key component in book sales.  Do you agree?  To what extent?  Do you think there is a way around this? Or that the cover should hold that much importance?

JCP: I’d say an author’s reputation is the most important element in a book sale. So I suppose when you’re starting out and haven’t really established a reputation, the cover plays a more important role than it would to an established author. The cover will telegraph several things: whether the publisher is quality enough to hire a real artist, where in the genre the story fits, and possibly what the characters look like, though of course that’s often best left to the readers’ imaginations. The cover should be indicative of the story’s overall mood, and so it helps readers in the process of deciding which books to investigate further by reading the blurb or maybe a sample.

M: Why was it important that Michael not become a full vampire?  Why the distinction?  What liberties did it give you that him being a full Vampire wouldn’t have?

JCP: Interesting, no one has asked that question before. A key part of Michael’s growth arc was that he discovers that vampires aren’t all evil; rather, evil people become evil vampires, but many vampires are just victims of either malice or circumstance. Having him turn into a demi-vamp rather than a full vampire causes him to confront the fact that a small part of him actually wanted to be turned. Now it’s impossible because he’s immune. He’s actually more powerful than a full vampire, although he’s a glass-half-empty sort and doesn’t see it that way. He doesn’t get the daylight lethargy that full vamps succumb to. He doesn’t have the water willies. And he can still digest food. So He gets some of the mind control power and some of the strength (and a cool pair of fangs) but few of the disadvantages.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Jack L. Pyke + Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Welcome to The Blogger Girls, Jack!

Hi Jen, thanks for having me over today.

Where is the oddest place where inspiration for a story has struck?

Ah. I was actually in a meeting, talking to a local Lib Dem leader. *Blushes* He’d just told me that he’d cut down some six-foot nettles from outside a tunnel that kids have to walk through in order to get school. It got me thinking back to graffiti art and frustrated late teens. That then led to ink on skin, which gave me that “Ooooh” moment over Broken Ink. It also gave me that “damn” moment, when I realised I couldn’t get it down on paper, not without raising a few eyebrows anyway.

How did the plot of Don’t and Antidote come to you?

Don’t was surprisingly easy, to be honest. Everyone’s been told don’t at some point and no doubt felt that itch to do the exact opposite. But the jolt for the plot itself, though, came from saying it to my own eldest lad (he’s twenty-one).

He’s OCD, to the point where I’ve been up in the early hours of the morning, watching him push his colognes into position, or arrange his clothes according to colour in the wardrobe (coat hangers have to be the same grey tone, then so much space between each one). But tell him don’t, he’ll stand nose-to-nose with you, give a kickass grin, and do the exact opposite. The heartbreak comes where one of my other kids knocks something over, and I see my eldest lad fight not to pick it up. Just pure contradiction.

I wanted go deeper with Don’t, to the point where a predatory feel controlled and used my MCs darkest obsessions and compulsions, and fed upon on his sexual heat and needs. Everything kind of spiralled from that point.

With Antidote. Oh boy. I think I just plotted out my worst fears as a parent who has a kid with a disorder. What if the wrong care and support had been there? We also have autism in the family, where fits and absences become the norm. Learning to cope with both, there’s lot of research involved, which included the history of disorders throughout the UK etc. It brings up the brutal treatments of the last few decades and it’s a heartbreaking insight. I wanted to go back and bring in the lengths that some people go to in order to make someone “conform” with society. In their eyes, anyway.

Not everyone will get through it; not everyone will like it as it’s a very tough read. But I don’t think topics should be avoided just because they cause upset or because it could (or has) happened.

It’s a difficult question to ask any author, but if you could choose, which Don’t MC would you spend a weekend alone with?

Oh Gray. Without a single doubt. Strange thing being, I think I’d just sit there in the corner with a pen and pad all weekend. I’d want to see how he works—watch his body language play out—just hear what he has to say. I’m a sucker for class and intelligence over bare skin, so seeing him in a suit and hearing him talk would, well, that would just about do it for me, lol. Although I doubt I’d get much written down. Maybe I’d have to record it on audio! Yeah, audio would work better, I think.

Can you tell us your inspiration behind Gray?

You know, it’s all in the voice for me where Gray is concerned. I grew up listening to a lot of audios as a kid, in particular the likes of Richard Burton. It never bothered me in the slightest what they looked like, but the tone and tonicity of their voice, how they make delivery count with an ability to leave me there just waiting for each idiosyncratic word to fall…

So with Gray, I guess he’s a physical representation of everything I love about studying language, and he kind of marks how I first started to fall in love with language as a teen, and still love it all the more today. I’ve listened to language faults and flaws play out to the full over the years, sometimes calculatingly, used quick and dirty to hurt, then other times used quick and dirty just through genuine frustration and heartache. I know it ripped me apart as a listener, but I also loved seeing how the narrator would stumble and fall in the aftermath of his words, despite how much control he thought he had. But with Gray, I wanted to go back to closing my eyes and just waiting for the voice to fall, and maybe take me down with it.

Did you anticipate that Don’t would be a series?

Well… I wrote Don’t in a very short time (13 weeks) and thoughts around a sequel were already mulling around. It wasn’t that it was planned as a series, just that I think the depth of these three characters and their history needed more. A lot more.

And will there be more to the series?!

After Breakdown, Gray Matters is scheduled as the final novel, and that’s from Gray’s pov. In all honesty after that, though, I’m not sure where I’ll be going with my writing. It knocks the stuffing out of you, and I have every respect for authors who do this full time.

Ah, but Jack Harrison, if ever there’d be a character to get me writing again, it would be Jack. He’s such unique and roguish character to handle on paper.

Do you follow a prescriptive pattern when writing.

Oh yes: chaos. Lol. I’ll write whichever scene I get the feeling to write, that means it could be Chapter 25 one day, Chapter 2 the next. Then I just go through and sew up the loose ends afterwards. I can’t write a scene that doesn’t interest me that day. That means I’ll have a general idea of the whole plot, but nothing that’s committed fully to on paper. If it feels right, I’ll go with it. But getting to that “Yeah feels right” part can take a very long time.

Do you have any quirky habits to help you get in the mood to write?

I’m partial to fighting with a bit of music, and I mean wrestling with some. It blocks out noise on one hand, but I can waste writing time just sorting for the right tracks on the other. Oh, and coffee, lol, lots and lots of coffee has to be in there somewhere too. And maybe a game or two of CandyCrush first. Okay, maybe three or four…

Yeah I had who are your writing influences.

I’ve got a core horror influence, to be honest. James Herbert, Shaun Hutson, Brian Lumley, Clive Barker. I don’t cover horror itself, but I like to try and carry that hard play on the reader’s feelings.

What made you pick up your pen the first time?

Hm. I came into writing quite late (32). I didn’t particularly like it at school, but I did have a very deep love for the English language itself. So I first picked up a pen to study: getting my B.A. hons in Linguistics, then editing, on top of my full time job and family. I started tinkering with fiction and erotic romance just to see if I could move away from analytics and play around with language myself.

How has the success of Don’t/Antidote surpassed your expectations

So with how Don’t… and Antidote have been received, it’s knocked me sideways. I’ve always loved messing with language from behind closed doors. Even with editing, there’s that safety barrier, where I can work relatively unnoticed. So with my writing, I feel like the accidental author left stumbling into the room with other authors.

Who is your greatest critic?

My kids, lol. Even though they’ve never read what I write, they have no clue what I do, I just get that look that says: you better make it damn good for spending time away from us. So they make me work hard and very critical of my own words, making sure each word counts. And then I have an editor and beta who are pretty good at dragging me naked over broken glass just to make sure the right acoustics are hitting the room, forget the blood, cuts, and writhing author in the corner over here. And I love them for it.

It’s been really good, Jen. Thanks so much for having me here today.

About Jack L. Pyke

Jack L. Pyke blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive, and if that drive just happens to lead to sexual tension between two or more guys in a D/s relationship, Jack’s the first to let nature take its course.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Kol Anderson + Giveaway!

JustJen: I am very excited to have the opportunity to share with everyone a little glimpse into the masterful wordsmithing mind of my good friend, Mr. Kol Anderson.   I’m so happy to have you with us today and want to thank you for sharing a little bit of yourself with us all.

The Inner Workings of a Mastermind

First, I have to ask about Prisoner

How has Aaron’s journey and its effect on your readers impacted your life?

Well, I went from thinking I could never be a writer to thinking maybe I can still hard and get better at it. Sometimes all of it feels unreal. The things people say sometimes, like how the characters touched them or how it affected them, it makes me feel like I’m finally being understood.

What did you expect the reception of Broken Season 1 to be?

Nothing? Lol Prisoner still sells! Still pretty high on the charts and unbelievable.

What can we expect for Carter in Episode 4?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you.

(Just kidding. I’d probably just tie you up and make you Vincent’s next victim.)

Who is the Prisoner character that has had the biggest impact on you?

I f***ing love that bastard.

What has the impact of Prisoner on your fans’ lives meant for you?

The world. Truly.

If I’m still writing it is because of them.

Now, a little about A Perfect Place

Did you know how A Perfect Place was going to end when you started writing it?

I usually know the ending when I start a story. I even write them down. Sometimes I write alternate endings pick one when I’m at that point according to feel. Perfect Place, yes. I knew where it was going to end.

Was it difficult for you to get into the mindsets of younger Lee and Jackson in A Perfect Place?

Actually no. That book came to me so easily. It just kind of flowed, especially the younger boys parts and their connection with the older age parts.

What was your overall goal, or theme for writing A Perfect Place?

I never have like a whole take over the world type plan for any book. I just pretty much write what I feel like writing. I wanted a story that hadn’t been written before, something that showed two people growing together and how we feel life changes people but somehow everything is still the same. I wanted to show that.

Another motivation, was that some people were coming up to me and telling me I only sell because I write sex in my books. Guess I just wanted to prove to myself that wasn’t the case.

How do you go about building the setting in your stories? Such as in A Perfect Place where it is so vivid – do you see the setting before you start writing the story, or build your world as you go along?

Well the setting in Perfect Place for sure the setting was a character in itself that’s how it was always supposed to be, like an evil villain for Liam and a home for Jax. Other times I build the world as I go.

Now for some General nosy questions – touting other works 😉

Do you draw from your own life when depicting your characters’ experiences?

Absolutely. Sometimes I see a person in real life for five minutes and I end up speculating about how he or she might react in a situation and that’s how they end up becoming characters.

It’s an impossible question to ask any author, but if you had to choose any one of your characters to spend a weekend with?

Is it wrong to say Vincent? Lol but seriously though… *thinks hard* yep.

Still Vincent. Crap.

Tell us about an exciting recent release (The Crying Game maybe?)

I am very proud of The Crying Game these days! It’s kind of endearing in a twisted sort of way lol and I hope people will take it for a love story instead of a twisted tale.

What is something that absolutely no one knows about you? (that everyone will know now :D)

Okay, damn. Let me think.

For a long time I thought Aristotle was just the name of our neighbor’s cat. I couldn’t understand why all the grown ups were making such a big fuss about it.

Oh yeah and I totally have a thing for souvenirs. I’ve kept every tooth from every body I have ever buried in an acid bath.

What is the strangest fan mail you’ve received from a reader to date?

I give people mindfucks in general so the fan mail is all pretty ahem ‘interesting.’ But once a guy sent me a shot of his you-know-what. Told me he wanted me to lick his ‘giant’ (debatable) dick so he could piss on my face. That comes under strange, right?

It’s a difficult question to ask any writer, but if you had to explain your writing process in three sentences.

Write. Purge. Repeat.

Q&A with J.W. Phillips

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I favor romance with a little smut. Who am I kidding? I favor life with a little smut. I am shy, but loud. I was voted by the other moms at the ball field to be the least likely to get a tattoo. I already had my first tat at the time. I go to church then I rush over to march in a gay pride parade. I am me and even when I annoy myself, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?

My couch with a large glass of Mello Yello and snuggled close to my puppy Mia.

If your book were made into a movie, who do you picture playing each characters part?

They are so ingrained in my mind, it is hard to picture anyone playing them. I truly believe I would want an unknown to play the parts.

Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why?

Ethan because who wouldn’t want to meet a man like him.

What is the hardest scene you have ever written?

The last one in Innocent Lies. My heart broke for the both of them.

What’s the last book you read?

Hunny Bunny, Funny Bunny to my two year old neighbor.

What’s one random fact about yourself that you can share?

My two middle toes are grown together.

What’s your favorite outside activity?

Outside of writing: watching movies with my kids. Outside in the yard: trying to get back inside.

When can we expect a second book in Dylan and Ethan’s story?

If I can stay out of the hospital, October 1st 2014.

What project are you working on now?

Pretty Little Lies, part two in the story of Ethan and Dylan.

About Innocent Lies

Innocent Lies**WARNING: This is NOT a sweet and sappy romance. It’s dark, twisted, and not for the faint of heart. If you prefer HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY this is NOT the book for you. Recommended for ages 17+ due to language and sexual situations.**

Dylan’s life was a living Hell, but she discovered what Hell really was.

Dylan was minding her own business when Ethan sat down at her table. All she wanted was peace from her past. He offered her the protection and calm she had never known. That was until she learned how much of that past he was a part of.

If life had taught Dylan Summers anything it was that not everyone gets a happily ever after.

Debut Author! Q&A with Rhiannon Ayers + Excerpt (NSFW)

TwitterAd_V1

Q&A with Rhiannon Ayers

What inspired you to write your first book?

Depends on what you mean by “first.” My very first series—yes, series—was written when I was eight years old. It featured a character named George Groundhog, and it followed him and his friends on a number of interesting adventures. Well, interesting to an eight-year-old, anyway! The inspiration came from reading the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.

As to the inspiration behind my first published book, that came from a friend of mine who lived through some pretty horrible things when he was young. My main character, Allen, is based on him as far as his tattoos and the fact that he was abused. The journey that Allen takes in the story is different than that of my friend, but the overall feel is the same.

I have also always wanted to find an outlet for some of my personal views regarding sex, love, and ménage, and writing a romance novel was the easiest way to convey those concepts.

Were there any psychological or logistical challenges in bringing your story to life?

A few. I had two main goals: tell Allen’s story, and convey the concepts that I described in the previous question. I wanted to tell a fantastic story while also including some real-life experiences. Figuring out realistic timeframes for the main story arc was my biggest logistical challenge, simply because it’s such a temptation to have all the important events take place right at the beginning of the story. I had to figure out the best way to reveal Allen’s dark past without destroying the pacing.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

The biggest would probably be that there should be no limits placed on love. Gay, straight, crooked, sideways—labels only apply where you choose to let them apply. Too many people cut themselves off from opportunities to find true love simply because they fear the label that will be attached to them if they allow themselves to admit what they want. Secondly, I want people to realize that the past doesn’t define the future unless you allow it to do so. Allen went through some horrible, terrifying events in his young life, yet he pulled through to become a sweet, lovable man. You can choose to let your past define your personality, or you can choose to forge ahead and make your own future. Easier said than done, I know. But it is possible!

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Actually sitting down to write it. I had the story in my head for almost a year before I finally managed to find time to sit down and write the whole thing. Now that I’m published, I have made a commitment to sit down and write every single day, though having a family, two jobs, and my own business certainly make that difficult. But, writing is my passion, so I believe I will be able to make it all work out. Somehow.

How much of the book is realistic?

The book is contemporary, set in Houston. The districts, buildings, and descriptions of Houston that are found in the book are 100% accurate. I would know, since I live there!

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Either Cameron Dane or Joey W. Hill. Both of them write evocative, contemporary romances that feature a lot of the same elements I am trying to convey with my stories. The two of them are my heroes in the romance genre. Someday I would love to be as prolific and well-loved as they are.

What are your current projects?

I’m working on books 2 and 3 in the For Love of Authority Series. Book 2 is about Allen’s sister, Amber, and her struggles with accepting herself as a sexual submissive. Book 3 features some old college friends of Sidri and Tatum and follows their struggle to form a lasting triad.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Sometimes I let my characters wax eloquent on topics that I’m passionate about. One of my biggest pet peeves about modern BD/sM novels is that most authors assume that vanilla readers will automatically understand the emotional reasons behind what’s happening between the Dominants and submissives. I wanted to add a little more explanation to my stories so that people who don’t understand the concept of D/s intrinsically can gain a little more insight. That said, I have a tendency to over-explain, which the editors at Siren Bookstrand have been wonderful helping me pinpoint. There’s a fine line between conveying a concept and beating it to death. Sometimes, I get WAY too wordy because I don’t know if my point has come across or not.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

BD/sM doesn’t have to be about pain. That’s probably the biggest thing I want readers to learn from my books. Most modern novels in this genre concentrate on specific acts such as whipping, caning, and spanking, and they make it seem like those acts are the end-all be-all. And yes, they are part of the lifestyle, but they are by no means the only expression of it. I wanted to bring back the gentler, psychologically-based D/s in my stories so that readers could see that it’s not always about masochism. Sometimes, a sub simply needs to know someone else is in control. I also want people to understand the basic dynamic of a true D/s relationship. The way Sidri and Tatum treat Allen in my story is the way it is in real life.

About Demons Within

Demons Within (MMF)Allen Heras just landed his dream job, and he’s determined to make the most of this chance for a new life. Only there’s a problem: he can’t seem to stop lusting after his bosses. After suppressing his bisexuality his whole life, he can’t afford to let his hormones ruin his chances for success. Now, if he could just get his big head to convince the little one of that, he’d be just fine.

Sidri McKenna and Tatum McAlister have always known there was something missing between them: another man, one who could bear the love of two Doms. And they’ve chosen Allen to be that man. They’d always known it would be an uphill battle, convincing Allen that three people could make it in a long-term triad. But when the demons from Allen’s horrible past threaten their relationship, they realize that the real battle isn’t convincing Allen to love them—it’s convincing him he’s worth loving in the first place.

Excerpt from Demons Within (NSFW)

Tatum headed straight for the freezer instead of making good on his offer to get them all food. He yanked open the door and shoved his face inside, a hard gasp shuddering out of him as the ice-cold air washed over his over-heated skin.

Too much. He wanted Allen too much. He stood with eyes shut tight, letting the frigid air try to cool the raging inferno of lust inside him. God help him, how would he ever manage to control himself?

A tentative, light-fingered touch on Tatum’s shoulder had him jumping and whirling around instantly. Allen stood behind him, eyes soft even as his hands trembled at his sides. As Tatum watched, Allen licked his lips and swallowed hard.

“I may not understand all this,” the smaller man said in a deep, sexy rumble that had Tatum’s balls drawing up tight, “But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be here.” He paused, laughed self-consciously. “I feel like a teenager, out on a first date. I don’t know what to do with myself, what I’m supposed to do.”

Tatum melted instantly, but Allen cut him off before he could offer reassurance. “This is all new to me, Tatum. Until last night, I didn’t even think anything like this was even remotely possible. So I’m nervous, and jumpy, and scared as all get-out.” He took a deep breath. “But I wouldn’t be here if this wasn’t something I wanted. And right now…” Allen looked down briefly, then speared Tatum with suddenly hot, chocolate-brown eyes.

“Right now, I want you to kiss me, the way you kissed her,” he said in a hushed tone. Then he gulped, licked that bottom lip again, and whispered, “Please.”

Tatum pounced.

He mashed their lips together almost violently, shoving both hands through Allen’s thick black hair so he could grip the man’s skull and control the angle of penetration. With deep, sure strokes of his tongue, he explored every inch of that hot mouth, the sweet taste mainlining sugar straight to his bloodstream. Allen whimpered, his trembling fingers threading through Tatum’s belt loops as he sought an anchor.

Tatum groaned, forcing Allen to step backward until he fetched up against the door to the pantry. Tatum used his greater weight to hold Allen captive against the unforgiving hard surface, kissing the man desperately. That Allen responded, kissing him back for all he was worth, just made Tatum that much hotter. Harder.

With both hands, he reached down and took hold of Allen’s muscular thighs. He lifted the smaller man straight up, raising him to a level where Tatum didn’t have to bend so far to reach those sinful lips. Then he slammed their chests together, holding Allen suspended between himself and the door, his feet off the ground. Allen gasped into his mouth, both hands flying up to circle Tatum’s shoulders as he held on for dear life.

Tatum reached up with one hand and pried Allen’s fingers from his collar, kissing him all the while. Then he guided that hand up and out, finally wrapping the other man’s fingers around a convenient hook on the pantry door. It was supposed to hold bags of potatoes, or other such ordinary kitchen items. Now it gave his soon-to-be-lover an anchor that wouldn’t move. When he had Allen’s fingers firmly in place, he squeezed gently, letting him know Tatum wanted them to stay there. Allen complied with a deep, guttural groan that Tatum swallowed hungrily.

With unencumbered access, Tatum ran his free hand down Allen’s arm, over his chest, and made for the button on his jeans. Allen convulsed in his arms, panting between kisses, obviously reeling from the savagery of Tatum’s assault on his mouth and body. But Tatum couldn’t stop, wouldn’t stop. He needed to do this.

With a growl of imperative male frustration, he ripped the fucking button clean off Allen’s jeans. They both heard the small piece of metal clang on the Italian tile floor, listened to it roll and hitch up against the far counter. With that out of the way, all that was left was his zipper. Tatum yanked it down in one swift motion and reached his hand inside Allen’s shorts.

Allen shouted into Tatum’s mouth as he finally, finally got his hands on that long, thick shaft. Jesus, the man was hung, his cock a perfect handful for a man Tatum’s size. Allen was painfully aroused, dripped pre-cum everywhere, providing Tatum with more than enough lubrication to begin the quick, fast hand-job he’d intended from the start. Allen’s whole body jerked with every hard stroke, his thighs clenching against Tatum’s legs where the taller man held him up. Tatum pulled ruthlessly, holding nothing back, jerking the man in his arms off as if his life depended on it.

Not once did he stop kissing him. Tatum was dizzy, light-headed from lack of air, but he couldn’t bring himself to release those intoxicating lips. He pressed his full weight against the man pinned to the door and growled with pleasure every time Allen jerked in his arms.

When Allen was panting, gasping, mewling, Tatum used his own hips to brace them both and used his other hand to yank his polo shirt up, exposing his abs. He pressed the head of Allen’s cock to his own stomach, tore his lips away, and whispered, “Come.”

Allen detonated.

Fiery blasts of cum decorated Tatum’s belly even as his own orgasm shot molten lava through his veins. He moaned, long and low, his forehead jammed against Allen’s as they both panted and shook with the force of their mutual release. He held onto Allen’s cock while the younger man pulsed and released wave after wave of hot, sticky seed all over Tatum’s body.

When it was over, they were both panting, trembling with the aftermath. At last, Tatum let the man slide down his body until his feet touched the ground. He stood there, panting, holding them both upright even though every one of his muscles wanted to melt into a puddle on the kitchen floor.

Q&A with Dan Skinner + Excerpt (NSFW) & Giveaway!

TPoD Blog Tour Banner

Q&A with Dan Skinner

What costume would you wear that would truly show your hidden personality?

A costume of Dan Skinner.

Why the lycra/spandex fixation? I know there’s a story there…

First guy I saw at my local pool was wearing one and I thought I’d die.

In no more than two sentences, can you describe yourself to a complete stranger?

I’m the one the extraterrestrial abducted and threw back out. And as the spaceship doors were closing you could hear them screaming, “And for God’s sake, clean the Probe!”

What is the most sentimental thing someone gave you that you cherish to this day?

The  answer to this question has been sealed in a document.

How much do you run on an average day?

I average no more than 10 miles a day. When I’m stressed that number goes up.

Do you have a plan to gain the weight you’ve lost lately? Does it include cheesecake?

If I like the way I fit in clothes, I stay with that weight.  If I want to gain weight it will be with some Old Vienna Hot Corn chips. lol

What is your favorite guilty pleasure food? The one your trainer would highly disapprove of?

See answer above.

Your top five recommendations of gay films please.

Shelter

Prayers For Bobby

Brokeback Mountain

Beautiful Thing

Eating Out (original)

What is the meanest thing you’ve done to someone in an argument or fight?

Broke a coffee table over them.

What song do you have to hear only once to get stuck in your head for an entire day?

Any friggin’ Gaga song.

I’d empty my bank account and take out a loan to have sex with____. Why?

Prince Harry. Because he’s mine anyway. Everyone knows that.

If you could wish one celebrity into the cornfield, who would it be and why?

Sarah Palin. Don’t even get me started why.

Your models all look like they have so much fun during your shoots. Do they? An do you?

Them, yes. Me. No. I sweat bullets.

Has it been difficult to stick with your recently adopted NBW (no bad words) policy? Explain a little bit about what NBW is.

NBW stands for No Bad Words. My trainer believes that bad words create bad events. I don’t speak them But I think them. I purge them on my runs.

What is the largest, um… attribute you have seen on a model?

Enough that I would never even attempt it.

On a scale of 1-10, ten being a completely controlling perfectionist, how would your models rate your determination to get every little thing perfect in every shot?

1000

I’ve seen one black model in your past work. Why haven’t there been more?

I try to get them. But there are very few in the Midwest. When I search the model sites I see tons of black and ethnic models on the east and west coast. I’m always looking tho.

It is said that every traumatic event in life has the potential to make you bitter or better. You seem to have made a conscious choice to make yourself better through this difficult past year. Do you struggle with that sometimes? And how do you get yourself back on track after a bitter moment?

I still struggle. I’m not so much bitter as I am disgusted. Probably more with myself than anyone. I feel very duped.

During the 2012 Presidential election, you were pretty vocal regarding your beliefs and opinions. You have a bigger platform now that you have two successful books and more photography work than ever. Do you plan to be as outspoken in 2016?

Always. This country needs to continue to move forward. As long as we have a party that lives and functions in a repressed past we have to make certain they never have a voice in lawmaking again. If they can’t move forward they need to get off the train.

What is the largest group of models you have had in one shoot?

Eight. Will never do it again. Too ADHD to put up with the scramble.

Why Cerberus as a company name? (This is the mythical three-headed hellhound who guards the entrance to the underworld)

It was one of the first sketches I ever made as a child that was pretty decent. The other was Dean Martin. So Cerberus it was.

If you could write a letter to your 18 year old self, what would you say?

Don’t get married twice. And check out the guy next to you in history class in 11th grade!

About The Price of Dick

The Price of DickHis name is Richard but he’ll say, “Call me Dick.” He’s a big, butch, brainy guy in an executive suit, hotter than spit on a skillet. The type of guy you can see fully dressed and imagine buck naked in the throes of an orgasm – every six-feet-two, muscular, sexually intoxicating inch of him. He’s an ambitious freshman in a prominent brokerage firm who’s figured out he can use more than his smarts to get ahead. He’s perfected a surefire method to drive home a hard deal. No one can resist him. And he’s got one really big secret. But that will cost you.

For photographer J.J. Johnstone, the price of Dick just might cost him everything.

Excerpt from The Price of Dick

So there I was, quickly regressing to puberty, sitting in a sauna with the object of my lust. Looking at his thick muscular legs, broad shoulders and other weight-developed bulges properly bulging and glistening with a sheen of hot sweat, I wanted to eat him alive. We soon exited the sauna together.

Unburdening myself of common sense was an easy task standing in the shower with him. Every inch of his make-me-growl masculinity, covered in blond fur, ass like two ripe honeydews just daring me not to look when he turned his back. I caught a quick glimpse of that gloriously long, circumcised, purple-capped cock and balls hanging between his legs under an unpruned patch of dark pubes. I remember thinking I hadn’t ever bought that much meat in a delicatessen but I still bet I could eat it all in one sitting. It took every bit of restraint I possessed to not pop wood in that shower. The mating dance was an endurance test. Think tearing down the Washington Monument using only your mind.

He invited me out for a drink this time, and we drove to Houlihan’s again. It was a Friday and the line out the door consisted of families with brats and people with an hour to waste after work. I suggested we get a six-pack and go to my apartment, which luckily, was only three blocks away, with a liquor store right on the way.

I’m sure it wasn’t in his mind, but it was in mine that this was a hookup. And I’d like to think he wasn’t completely naive about my intentions. I was in testosterone hyper-drive. I got him to my apartment and we drank and talked like good ole buds. He was comfortable telling me about his recent college life, the break up with the girl of his dreams who left him for another man because she had cheated on him and was pregnant. His heartbreak. All the things I couldn’t have cared less about—good riddance to anything that would have been competition anyway. Dick got into his high school days of playing football and wrestling, and I sat there picturing that mass of muscled man-ass crammed into a singlet, me trying to pin him on a mat with my head pressed deep into a musk-reeking ass crack.

He was a frat boy. I should have guessed. They all had a certain look to them. And his frat brothers were his best friends in the world and meant everything to him. He missed their daily camaraderie. I wondered if he’d jacked off with any of them. Used the fraternity paddle in an un-fraternity-like manner. You’ve seen the porn. Don’t tell me your mind didn’t go there.

It was a disappointingly platonic get-together, like any dull straight boys could have had, but I learned a lot about him. How many couples fuck on a first date anyway, right? I consoled myself with that lame excuse. Shame on me—I should have paid close attention to the story he shared with me that night. While in his freshman year of college, his parents tried to surprise him with a friendly unannounced visit. Lo and behold, in his dorm room a snooping mother had found a used condom in his wastebasket. She collapsed into pious, Catholic tears and left before he got back to his room. A few days later she sent him a two page, single-spaced, typewritten letter preaching to him about the Catholic stand on premarital sex, and especially condemning the use of that horrendous tool of the devil, the seed-killing prophylactic. Don’t worry. Those facetious words weren’t hers. I paraphrased. This boy was more browbeaten by mommy than Norman Bates.

Didn’t matter to me that he was a mommy’s boy. He could have been wearing prison orange and had the tattooed tear of a brazen killer on his cheek and it wouldn’t have stopped me wanting him. That he was double-fisted clutching onto his “I’m so straight” persona with his stories, I found cute because I was reading something different in body language and eye contact. He was in my company for a reason. I thought he was just a bit backward about the how-tos of getting naked with another dude. I’d get him there…eventually. I felt it in my bones. One in particular.

So our little beer-drinking, life-sharing, guy get-together ended with him thanking me for a nice evening and shaking my hand at the door.

In my head I fucked that butt so hard I made myself cry.

About Dan Skinner

I’d already been in the photography business for too many years to count, shooting covers for hetero romance covers when I had my epiphany (ten years ago now) to shoot gay book covers and make them as acceptable and mainstream as the hetero ones. It was a big risk and I was told by many people, especially people who advised me financially, that it might not be a profitable thing to do, and could quite possibly ruin my reputation. But I was tired of seeing the proliferation of covers featuring a man and woman, the cologne and perfume ads featuring a man and a woman… every ad under the sun – only featuring a man and a woman, and knowing that only one side of life was being spoon fed to us by the media as the acceptable aspiration and ideal. In fact, it made me angry and crazy, and determined to do something about it. We were here… didn’t anyone see us?!!

I had several things working against me. The m/m fiction genre was just beginning to come into its own, but television and the entertainment industry were slowly allowing us into their vision as folks who existed right alongside them, and I knew the flux and flow of gay literature was going to eventually change. Will and Grace helped that. Brokeback Mountain helped that. So I had hope and crossed my fingers that I made a good choice as well as a conscientious one.

Along with that, I had to find guys daring enough to pose with each other in photos mimicking the same love and adoration as was seen in every Harlequin cover since time immemorial… They had to embrace and kiss and portray romance… between two people of the same gender. So finding the guys was going to be a chore… and finding guys in the Bible belt of the country, the Midwest, was going to be even tougher. But I did it.

Revenge is mine… the dbag’s bed has been christened by the models during a shoot!!

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Inez Kelley + Giveaway!

HC: I just recently read The Bastard by Inez Kelley and loved everything about it.  Its the first book in her new series The Baddest Boys in History, and you know what that means?  Now I have to wait forever for the next book!  So in the mean time, I’ve harassed Inez just enough to where she agreed to answer a few questions…

Interview Banner

HC: First, can you tell us a little about your new book The Bastard, the first book in your new series The Baddest Boys in History?

IK: This was a story I wasn’t sure anyone would like. One part history, some not-so-nice-guys and a few weird angels. Toss in some sex, a few religious tones and stir with a big old romance stick. But I took a chance and it does seem to have hit a vibe with many people. The book has been likened to the Old Skool BDB by JR Ward, Kenyon’s ‘DARK HUNTERS’, Showalter’s ‘LORDS OF The UNDERWORLD’ and Neil Gaiman’s ‘AMERICAN GODS’.

While I have read Ward’s BDB, I’ve only read two books by Kenyon, and have never read Showalter or Gaiman. I just wrote what I wanted to read.

HC: It becomes obvious pretty early on in The Bastard that many, if not most of the characters are inspired by real, remarkable people from the past.  Are you a history junkie or what?  Where did this idea come from and how much research have you already put in to creating this series?  And do you worry about the liberties that you take about what we all believe to be fact about these people and their history?

IK: I am a history junkie! I hated high school history class which was just memorization of dates and battles spewed in a monotone structure, but college and personal study let me dig deeper and explore other aspects of history, the real stories and facts, not just the dates.

The story idea came from a two people, friends from two different parts of my life. One was a writer friend who suggested that a certain bad boy in history (that is not included in my series – but I reserve the right to write about him later) was beyond redemption. At the same time, a friend from a parenting board asked me on a ‘books we’re reading’ thread why all bad boys series had to be vampires (it did seem that way years ago). Those two statements merged in my brain and I started researching possible characters for a vague idea. Three years later, here we are.

As for how much research, about three years worth before the book went live and it is still ongoing. I wanted to make sure the plot lines and story arc in my head were logical and feasible. I have a file on my hard drive that is about 400,000 words long of just information, on every aspect of the series. Less than a quarter of it will make it into the story as recognizable history but I’ll know it and it helped shape the characters. Some of it appears but it small tidbits, like the décor of Erik’s apartment.

The liberties I took never bothered me. I tried to stay very true to what ‘history’ tells us about these people but history can be very vague and very contradictory. I exploited that. I was able to take more liberties with Zale, Myth and Nomad but even then, there was an accepted pool of mythology and customs. So I adhered to as much of that as I could. It was a little like getting a coloring book with basic simple drawings and it was my job to make that plain round apple look life-like.

HC: You probably have already recognized this, but here at TBG we read and review predominately LGBTQ stories.  So I have to point out that Rex is an out and proud bisexual male.  Have you explored pairing him with a man for his HEA?  And if not, can we expect to see other LGBTQ characters later on in the series?

IK: I love Rex. He is sexual, period. There is a scene in upcoming The ADDICT that shows him in a sexual act with a man but ultimately his destiny is with a woman. Even then, she is unique. Her name is Tia and, in her first life, she dressed and behaved as a man. Being a woman is what got her killed and she isn’t too keen on turning into a girly Mary Sunshine now.

Her character is as far from Lacy’s as imaginable. Rex asks her if she is a lesbian. She replies she has never been to Lesbos. In her time, lesbians came from Lesbos and there was no sexual connotation of that word. The words aitis or trepesthai would have made more sense to her. She is just not interested in sex with either gender… at first.

One thing I found during my research that was interesting is that homosexuality/bisexuality was vastly more accepted in ancient times than more modern eras. Also, different cultures viewed it differently but few considered it outright wrong. Not to say that it was completely accepted as the norm, but it doesn’t seem to have carried the same stigma as it does/did in more modern history.

Just like nudity, it was just something there. You might not parade it but you weren’t ashamed of it. There were social obligations to meet, but if one could fulfill those, then the fact that their preference was for the same gender was pointless.

We meet openly gay and bi Righteous later in the series as well.

Although Rex is openly bi, he is not the only main character who has engaged in homosexual acts. More of that will be revealed as the series progresses. I do want to mention that history colors things. For example, once imprisoned, Joan of Arc was promised her freedom if she ceased dressing/behaving as a male. She tried but couldn’t conform and reverted to her male attire, knowing full well it would send her to her death. Could she have been transgender? To me it is possible. And in my mind, she is not the only historical figure who that label might apply to.

HC: I know this series is all about “the baddest boys in history”, but will that include any of the Righteous? Because those boys are pretty bad themselves!

IK: Yes, we meet several. Some are jerks, some are not. And not all are ‘boys’. There were female Forsaken at one time and we see some female Righteous in the series.

HC: In The Bastard, the story is set in West Virginia, but the Forsaken Leap around the world to faraway places like Israel and Nicaragua in their fight against the Third.  What kind of exotic locales can we expect to see in the future?

IK: Oh, many. One underlying concept of this series is that all mankind is threatened by Samael, not just the USA. So of course, the story must venture outside the US district. Two places I have tentatively placed scenes in are Cambodia and Madrid.

HC: Can you share with us some of your future plans with the series (with as little spoiler detail as possible)? How many books do you already have planned out and will that complete the series?

IK: 1) Omen is not a shifter and will never be human, but he is more than you see.

2) One Forsaken goes stark-raving mad, as in break out the straight jacket, foaming at the mouth, shove his ass in a padded room.

3) Samael becomes a Daddy… and that ain’t a good thing.

4) There will be six books in the series. I don’t see myself going further than six. Too many series go on too long. I know each main couple and the full over-arcing plotline. The individual romance stories are sketchy after book 3 but that is okay at this point. They will come to me.

HC: I expect that you already have it planned out, but I just want to say that I want Zale’s book NOW!  He has to be the baddest of the bad in my opinion and I can’t wait to see all that ice melt.

IK: Zale is like an onion. Too strong, too harsh and too bitter but as you slowly peel away the layers, the sweeter, milder inside is revealed. But then again, he is an asshole and there is lots more of that to see.

HC: And my final question is just for fun: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

IK: I just moved 700 miles and sold most of my old office furniture. I plan to redo a new office as soon as I can. For now, I write on a desktop sitting on an old scarred and nicked computer table. I have about seven little plastic geckos I call my Muses that keep me company. I normally write in silence and prefer to write at night. I am mostly nocturnal, a hold over for working midnight shift for over a decade as a 911 Dispatcher. I write in the dark, with one lamp burning. Too much sunlight kills my thought train for some reason.
