Why My Series Is Unlike Any Other

by D.N. Simmons

I’m very honored to be here and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this opportunity to meet new readers.  My name is D.N. Simmons and I’m an urban-fantasy/paranormal romance author. My series Knights of the Darkness Chronicles is phenomenal, sexy, highly entertaining and completely addictive… well, that’s what I’ve been told. Who am I to disagree *giggle*.  When I say that my series is unlike any other, I really mean it. You will NOT find another series quite like it in the genre. That was my sinister plan from the very beginning.  I wanted to create a series with a platform that would take readers into a completely unique and bold direction with characters they could relate to. The story lines are original from book to book and they keep you engaged from the beginning to the end.  I know that the shelves are filled with paranormal books, especially those involving vampires and shape-shifters. And if you’re a fan of the genre, like I am, you may think that you won’t find anything too original because the market is already flooded.  That’s only because you haven’t read the KOTDC yet.

See, I’m the kind of person that gets extremely enthusiastic about awesome storytelling. When I finish reading a great book or watching an amazing movie, I’m still buzzing about it. One of the reasons why I get so excited is because of exceptional writing and imagination. I appreciate that so much, therefore, I knew I had to give my readers the very best I could give them.

The Knights of the Darkness Chronicles isn’t just a series you read. It’s a series you experience.  You’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when you grab the first book. 😀 Trust me.

*****

As part of my author post, I decided my characters would be the best introduction in my creative mind. So please allow me to introduce you to vampire Master of Chicago, Darian Alexander:

Darian:

The man himself. The Greek God breathtakingly gorgeous and incredibly dangerous at the same time. Don’t let his piercing forest green eyes and school boy dimpled grin fool you, he’s as deadly a predator as they come. His reputation is never  misunderstood, those who know his name fear him. Darian is not someone to mess with, for he has ways of dealing with those who cross him. He controls the entire city of Chicago. Even the S.U.I.T. organization steers clear of him and his dealing. Jaded by  his many years of existence, he has a tendency to be callous when it comes to humans. He’s been there and done  that, so to speak and he’s rarely  surprised by humanity. His charm,  intelligence and debonair personality is what drew the lovely and beautiful queen of the leopard Pride to him, even against her own Pride’s wishes.

Unfortunately for Elise, there is but  one person in his life that has his whole heart, his Xavier. At least, that is what  he thought until he met Natasha. The  young woman intrigues Darian, baffles him, even. He wants her and only time will tell  for us to see if he gets what he wants. Keep reading.

* I sent Darian an email this afternoon asking him one question.  He sent me back a reply.

Hi Darian.

I just had a quick question I wanted to ask you.  I have an author guest spot on an awesome blog and I wanted to introduce new readers to you. I think that once they meet you, they won’t be able to get enough of you. I know I can’t. 😀

Anyway, here’s my question:

What Turns You ON?

Sexy question, eh? I can’t wait to hear what your response is.

Ttyl,

Hello D.N.,

I’m always thrilled when I see an email from you. However, I must admit, I was disappointed that you didn’t ask me this question in a more intimate setting.

Maybe later. *wink*

Your question: “What turns me on?”

I’m a lover of both men and women; I find both sexes to be enchanting. I am moved by an individual’s inner strength, loyalty and confidence. That’s what catches my interest first. Then there’s everything else. I adore the feeling of warm limbs wrapped around my body. I love the seductive scent of desire and the heat that flows from my lover when they know I want them and that I will have them. The moment when I look into their eyes and know that I am giving them the greatest of all pleasures. Oh, how I savor the rapture that takes them and doesn’t let go until I release them… that D.N…. turns me on.

Until we meet again,

Love,

Honorary Blogger Belinda McBride: On Building an Uncommon Universe – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

On Building an Uncommon Universe

by Belinda McBride

The Uncommon Whore series is actually piggy-backed on the world I created for a space opera called Belle Starr. In Belle, there are definite paranormal elements where in An Uncommon Whore, there are aliens, but the primary characters are mundane humans. In my history of the people of Arash, they were from an early Greek society…perhaps even from Atlantis. In any case, they fled to the stars long before modern man visited the moon.

Anyhow, as I wrote the first book, I quickly realized there was more to it than a simple novella, so I decided to adapt it to the existing Coalition universe. This gave the book political implications that allowed me to further develop that original universe and expand the role of some of the alien cultures I’d introduced in Belle. For example, when I wrote about the Landaun invasion in When I Fall, Griffin Hawke recalls how his people were rescued. I sat down and looked at my chart of aliens and decided that the Somian and the Vash were the most likely cultures to undertake a mission of mercy. Later, Griffin and Helios encounter some of the AmWere from Belle Starr and are stunned to meet these huge shifters from Earth, as there was nothing in their history to account for these creatures.

As I’m a pantster, I find that the more I prepare by developing cultures, settings and characters before I begin, the better my story flows. I know that the new planet Neo Domus is strange to Helios and his people, but it’s comforting in a way.  I modeled it off the Greek countryside, so while they might be accustomed to the lush forests of their old planet, deep down, they’d see some familiarity in Neo Domus’s rough, rocky terrain and sunny climate. It’s a fun project, I get to move from book to book and see how events in Prince of Faith will affect the next book in Belle Starr or The Bacchi.

An Excerpt from Prince of Faith

The next time I see Griffin Hawke, I’m going to kick his stubborn ass from one end of the galaxy to the other.

The refrain ran through his head, day in and day out. For how long now? Markus Dayspring wasn’t certain. Over a year, surely. Longer, given the events that had transpired since Griffin Hawke had shanghaied him into the service of the skeezy bastard, U’shma. Once the shock of the assault wore off and Markus recovered a degree of lucidity, he remembered the other man he’d glimpsed, a beautiful face gazing down at him in horror. Betrayal.

It was Helios staring at him without a trace of recognition on his face.

Gone was the choppy hair and ruggedly handsome face, so similar to Markus’s own. They’d looked so similar they’d often been mistaken for brothers rather than cousins. This new Helios wore the gowns of a whore of Warlan, his copper-red hair hanging to his hips, his gray eyes lined with tattoos. In all, he hadn’t looked bad. He’d been spared most of the hardware that decorated a sex slave. Markus had caught a glimpse of Helios Dayspring before falling under Griffin’s blows. Those few seconds still had the power to chill him to the heart.

In spite of the fury, the frustration of being betrayed, Markus took comfort in the knowledge of Helios’s safety. While Grif played a deep game, Markus had as well, hiding the intelligence he’d gathered during their travels together. That information ultimately pointed to Warlan and their missing king. In spite of everything, the gruff bodyguard would never let harm come to Helios. The knowledge allowed him to focus on his own plight, and how to escape. So far no strokes of luck or genius had come to his rescue. So he languished here, day after day, bound hand and foot to a ridiculously comfortable bed.

Things could always be worse.

The door unlocked and creaked open; Markus automatically tested the deceptively light chains holding his wrists in place. His jaw went tight, already fighting the battle he faced. His heart pounded, and his breathing accelerated in fury. In anticipation. In shame.

A wizened old creature shuffled into the room, bearing a heavy tray in her bent, twisted hands. She grinned toothlessly. She’d once told Markus her teeth had been knocked out when she’d accidently clipped a customer during a blowjob. To her delight, the missing teeth made her job much easier.

He figured she must work in the dark. He couldn’t imagine anyone paying for her company.

She kicked the door closed, set the tray on a table, and turned to him. “You got a big night ahead, Your Highness. Boss wants you fed and prepped.” She double-checked his bindings, making an occasional adjustment. “We’ve moved outside coalition space. First day orbiting a new settlement. You’re in for a ride.” Her Common was fluent enough, though heavily accented. Of course, that could have been the missing teeth.

Her gnarled hands wandered his body in a rude exam, searching for weapons or anything he could use to injure a client. She slipped a hand into the cloth covering his groin, pinching a testicle. He gasped and writhed, and she cackled her amusement.

“Guess the last dose wore off.”

His heart dropped.

“Don’t. I can function without it.” He broke out in a cold sweat, and he wasn’t sure if need or dread caused his skin to prickle. The hag loosened his chains, using a single anchored length to guide his movements. Stiffly, he rose from the bed, eyeing her balefully. She was old, decrepit, and the most evil being he’d met in his life. No, she was the employee of the most evil person ever. The hag was merely his tool. That didn’t excuse the woman’s crimes against him. She was a beast.

With a jerk on the line, she guided him to the tiny toilet. A hiss of vapor released in his face, and he coughed, bracing himself for pain.

“Do your business.”

On command, his gut cramped. He pushed the loincloth to the side and collapsed onto the toilet, his intestines gripping like ropes of concrete. He groaned, hating the drugs, hating the old woman…hating everything. Everyone. Through pain-hazed vision he glared at her until the ordeal was completed.

She jangled the chain. “Get in the shower.”

Slowly he obeyed, flinching against the harsh, tearing scream of the poorly functioning sonic unit. If it’d been water, she’d force him to strip fully naked before her greedy gaze. She’d seen him naked many times before, but it didn’t matter. When there was so little dignity left in life, Markus held desperately to what he could.

He stepped out of the unit on trembling legs, cold sweat blossoming over his skin. He clenched his fist in fury. He could easily break away and kill the woman, but the price would be too steep. The time to escape would eventually come, but not now. She was ready for him. He’d learned the lesson in the harshest manner possible and wasn’t prepared to face the consequences again. There was a reason the hag had grown old in her dangerous profession. He ground his teeth, reluctantly taking his position on the bed. He carefully arranged a fold of fabric over his groin.

Ludicrous.

“Drink up.” She shoved a battered tin at him, and Markus looked at it with suspicion. He sniffed cautiously. After all this time, he still didn’t know what they were dosing him with. “It’s water. You humans need it. Scans say you’re too dry.”

With a prayer he gulped it down, choking, but loath to waste a drop. A minute passed, and another while she worked at his restraints. He felt unaffected and began to relax.

Shit. Relaxed. The goose bumps faded, and his body went warm with euphoria. In panic, he jerked the chains, too late to break away.

“Fuck!” he shouted.

“Open up.” She dangled some unidentifiable morsel in front of his mouth, and then pulled her hand away as Markus bit savagely. He chewed, glaring at her the entire time. He swallowed, and the feeding proceeded. “You’re lookin’ a little sleepy. How you feelin’?”

He didn’t answer. She was vanishing behind a blissful haze. He fought to hold on to his anger.

“You’re gettin’ sleepy. Can’t have that.” She floated through his vision, across the room, and then suddenly back in his face. Before Markus could react, his jaw was trapped in her shockingly strong grip, and a wand was cruelly inserted into a nostril. He flinched, but already the pungent, musky fumes overpowered him.

His erection was instantaneous. He howled in anger, fury. Pain. Fire licked his body, starting deep in his pelvis, reaching out to consume his cock and balls, his belly and chest. It burned from the inside right out to the skin, and his vision went red. His hips thrust uselessly, and Markus was fairly certain he begged for mercy. For relief.

For death.

The old woman laughed.

* * * *

Caius gazed at himself in the hotel mirror, noting the weariness he felt did not show on his face. It was there in the slight droop to his shoulders, in the sluggish movement of his body, but his false face wore the same placid, dour expression as always. With a sigh, he turned to the rickety worktable and opened his comm unit, journaling the activities of his day, and then sent the report to King Helios.

He’d been on the brothel barge Paradise for a week, following leads on a prostitute billed as the Royal Concubine. The term prostitute might be misleading; most of the whores on this ship were serving prison sentences for debt or theft. Others were undoubtedly slaves, their paperwork forged. The operation was shady at best, and always under coalition investigation.

Problem was, barges were vast, heavily armed, and continually in motion. A simple, effective intelligence network greased their way, paying copious bribes and hush money as a barge visited systems in seemingly random fashion. By the time Interstellar Coalition Enforcement could respond to its presence, the barge would be long gone, into another sector, or out of coalition territory completely. Right now, the Paradise was on the wrong side of the frontier. No law existed but the rules on the barge. If he screwed up, his stay on the Paradise might wind up a long-term engagement.

At the end of his personal report, Caius flashed-scanned a handbill, saving it to his journal. He shut down the unit, then sat on the bed, looking through the curtained window down onto the street.

Like all other brothel barges he’d searched, the Paradise was massive, the size of a large city. He’d sectioned it off, walking all day, gathering handbills, listening to panderers pitch their products. He feigned interest in drug-addicted Valorans and serpent-tongued Tohrc. He grinned lewdly at humans in all their varied forms. All the while he searched for one specific man. If he asked openly, suspicion would close mouths, and he’d find himself standing alone on the street, shut out completely. So he played the game, posing as a lust-addled tourist taking a hard-earned vacation.

Caius lay back and rested his head on the pillow, holding the yellow handbill up in front of his face. It was crudely drawn, portraying a bejeweled man in a crown. He was nude, his enormous cock erect and studded with golden loops. Simple sketched lines illustrated long hair falling in waves past his shoulders.

He looked frighteningly similar to King Helios, which was undoubtedly the intention of the advertisement. The king was a celebrity throughout the coalition, and Caius had tracked numerous pretenders capitalizing on the popularity of Helios Dayspring.

He let the paper slip from his fingers. Time was running out. If Markus Dayspring was indeed alive, he wouldn’t be for much longer. Caius had followed his tempestuous trail from Warlan out to the brothel barges. The prince fought and battled every man or woman foolish enough to purchase him. Needless to say, Helios’s owner U’shma hadn’t kept Markus more than a few days. He couldn’t cook. He wouldn’t whore for the big Morgaise. He couldn’t be beaten into submission. He also had a nasty tendency to attack his owner.

Poor U’shma was now making do with himself for company. If he was still alive. He’d angered some very important people back there on Warlan.

The king’s cousin had moved from household slavery to scat mines and then on to whorehouses, never lasting long without leaving mayhem in his path. He’d finally ended up with a broker who placed slaves on brothel barges. From there, the trail had vanished.

Caius rubbed at his temple, trying to soothe the headache that never quite went away. With a trembling hand, he fumbled at the small box mounted on his belt, pausing to command the lights down before summoning the courage to disengage the holo-disguise.

The sudden silence in his brain was so abrupt he nearly bolted from the bed. He lay staring into the darkness, counting off the seconds. Last night, he’d made seven minutes without the unit. He was aiming for ten tonight. Or maybe fifteen.

When he reached three, his mouth was open, and he panted, partly in discomfort, partly in panic. At five minutes, small animal noises rose from his throat. His hand hovered over the box while his heart raced.

General Hawke had extracted a promise from him. He’d objected to sending Caius on this mission until King Helios stepped in, avowing his faith in Caius. Carlotta had been there too, her dark eyes bright in pain…and trust. It was because of her unquestioning faith that he persisted in the gradual withdrawals. Every night he had to turn the box off. Every night he had to increase the time in his own skin. Eventually, he’d destroy the damned unit, but right now the very thought unnerved him.

Ten minutes passed, and he dredged up the words he’d spoken to the general—his solemn vow. At fourteen minutes, he’d doubled the previous night’s time, and with a sense of elation, he kept going. The headache moved from a dull throb to a brilliant point of pain that dazzled his eyes, yet he bore it. The day was too far gone for him to keep looking for Markus, though the bars and whorehouses operated around the clock. He needed downtime, so he could rest and plan.

Unable to bear any more, he gasped, jerked, and slapped at the unit, collapsing onto his back as the nearly imperceptible hiss of the holo-disguise engaged. He held his hands in front of his streaming eyes, watching as they once again morphed into the large, blunt-fingered fists of Caius, complete with a white scar over his knuckles on his left hand.

He panted and groaned, perversely amused at the noise he made. Agony sounded rather like sex.

He shoved his knuckles into his eyes. His stomach lurched with the intensity of the migraine. He could take medication to dim the knife-edged agony, but pain was his penance. It was the price he paid for the box he wore on his hip and for the illusion that cloaked his body. It was the price a man paid for pretending to be other than what he really was.

Caius touched his skin, feeling wet tears on his cheeks. He trailed the tips of his fingers over his face, touching the features he’d come to hate. To fear. The mirror in the bathroom reflected Caius, with his blunt face and sandy hair and pale blue eyes. His fingers told him a whole different truth.

He rolled to his side in a fetal position, breathing through the pain. Soon enough he’d have to take something; he couldn’t afford to give too much time to the headache. But for now, he embraced his penance, falling into the brilliant lights and hypnotic agony, and eventually into darkness.

Exclusive Excerpt from Mail Order Misunderstanding

He wrapped her in his arms, knowing it was the key to settling her down, and pulled her against him, kissing her passionately.  He slowly traced her lips with his tongue, and when she parted her lips in response, he took advantage by moving his tongue in to mate with hers.

She felt a jolt of energy run through her body and grabbed his shoulders, clinging to him.  Suddenly she wasn’t certain if her legs could support her, as she stood beside the wagon, pressing her body to his.  Whatever drove her crazy about this man, when he kissed her, her insides turned to mush.

Tom cupped her backside in his hands pulling her against him.  He knew she would probably want to wait until bedtime to consummate the marriage, but with her obvious flightiness, he didn’t think that was a good idea.  “Let me put the horses in their stalls, and I’ll show you around.”  Show you my bedroom.

WildWesternWomenBoxSet_NewHe worked quickly, getting the horses unhitched from the wagon and rubbing them down.  Keeping his eyes on her face, every time she looked ready for flight, he’d hurry over and kiss her again until she had that glazed look on her face, and then he’d hurry even faster to get the horses taken care of.  It took him twice as long as it should have to unhitch the team because he kissed her so many times.

When he was finished, he walked to her and pulled her into his arms, kissing her again until she couldn’t support her weight with her own legs.  He scooped her into his arms and carried her toward the house, thinking of nothing but getting her into his bed.  He’d known from her letters there would be something special between them, but this level of feeling was beyond anything he’d dreamed of.

She stared up at his face, knowing she needed to try one more time before she just went along with him.  “I think there’s been a misunderstanding…” she began, and he pressed his lips to hers, standing with her cradled against him, right there on the front porch of his house.

“Don’t worry about anything.  I’ll take care of you,” he whispered, opening the door and carrying her inside.  He showed her nothing, just carried her straight to the bedroom, laying her on the bed and following her down onto it, propping himself on one elbow beside her.  “You’re even more beautiful than I imagined you’d be.”  He traced her cheek with his index finger, still having a hard time believing that this beautiful woman was his wife, and he had every right to kiss her and touch her as much as he wanted.

Julia stared up into his face, surprised that he thought she was beautiful.  No one had ever said that about her before.  “I’m not beautiful,” she protested.  He was beautiful though.  She’d never seen a more handsome man in her life.  He was tall, with dark hair and brown eyes.  His eyelashes seemed to go on forever, and his mouth.  Her eyes dropped to the mouth that seemed to be kissing her endlessly.  It looked hard and chiseled, but she knew better.  His lips were soft against hers and oh so loving.

He moved closer to her on the bed, his lips covering hers once more.  His kisses made her feel as if her brain could no longer function, and she was happy to give into the bliss of not having to worry about every little thing.

She kissed him back, using her tongue as he’d taught her, wrapping her arms around his hard shoulders.  He’d said he was a rancher, so he must work hard every day, making those muscles bulge.  She moved her hands around to the front of his shirt, slowly unbuttoning it, because never in her life had she wanted to touch anyone as much as she wanted to touch his bare skin.  It was so hot, but she just couldn’t make herself care.

Tom was startled to feel her fingers unbuttoning his shirt, but he didn’t say a word, because he certainly didn’t want her to stop.  He moved his hands to the back of her dress and slowly liberated each button from its hole.  Once he was finished, his hands roamed over her back, wondering if it would startle her if he pushed her dress off his shoulders.  She certainly didn’t seem like she was shy.

Part of Julia’s mind knew she should protest when he unbuttoned her dress, but she didn’t want to.  She wanted what he was doing to her more than she’d ever wanted anything, even to teach.

Before she knew what had happened, she was lying beside him totally nude and he was wearing only his pants.  He’d even removed his boots during her glaze of passion.  Her hands reached out to stroke his bare chest, toying with the light covering of hair and his flat nipples.  At his groan, her eyes met his, and she gently rolled the nipples between her fingers, thrilled that he was enjoying what she did to him.

Tom couldn’t believe how wild in bed his little wife was turning out to be.  She’d claimed to be a schoolteacher, but no teacher he’d ever known would act this way.  He cupped her bare breasts in his hands, his thumbs flicking over the nipples, watching her face carefully to see what she enjoyed and what she didn’t.  As far as he could tell she liked it all.  Continue reading

Honorary Blogger Eileen Griffin & Nikka Michaels: In The Kitchen With Eileen Griffin and Nikka Michaels

Honorary_Blogger_Post

In The Kitchen With Eileen Griffin and Nikka Michaels

by Eileen Griffin & Nikka Michaels

In our experience, people usually fall into two groups: Foodies and Non-Foodies. Non-Foodies tend to eat to live, whereas Foodies completely and whole-heartedly live to eat. We definitely fall into the latter category. Whether it’s trying out a new dish, walking through a farmer’s market and drooling over all the homemade/homegrown food in the stalls, or scrolling through multiple sites for *just* the right recipe, we simply love making (and yes, eating) good food.

When we first met several years ago, we did the typical swapping of favorite authors and favorite books. Soon, though, our conversations devolved into, “So, what are you making for dinner?” and “I’m looking for a good pasta recipe. Do you know of a good one for me to try?” We even sometimes take pictures of what we’re eating/making and send them to each other. We’re weird. We’ve known that for awhile now 😉

Eileen:  We’d been swapping recipes for a month or so when our conversation drifted to Food TV. I’m not a big TV watcher, so I was pretty clueless about most of the newer shows. I loved “Man vs. Food” and a few of the travel shows that involved food, but that was about it. Then Nik told me I had to watch “Chopped”.  I had no clue what it was, but set up my DVR to record an episode. It only took five minutes and I was hooked. The different ingredients, the time limits, the amazing dishes the contestants create – all of it sucked me in and I’ve been an avid watcher ever since.

Nikka:  I laughed the first time Eileen texted me to tell me she’d actually watched an episode of “Chopped”.  She was like a kid in a candy store, going through her On Demand list of them, trying to watch as many as she could. It’s not out of the ordinary for her to tweet me saying, “I might be a tad bit addicted to ‘Chopped’. Thanks Nikka Michaels.”

It wasn’t long after that we decided to collaborate on a novella idea Nik had had that revolved around two young chefs. (Yes folks, we said novella. Once we started, we knew Ethan and Jamie had so much more going on with them than what could be contained in a novella.) And hence, In The Raw and In The Fire were born, and we’re almost halfway through Book Three in the In The Kitchen series, which will be released in 2015. We still love watching cooking shows and will often call or tweet each other with, “Oh my god! Did you see what they did with the eel on this week’s episode?” Or “Weren’t the kids on the ‘Teen Chopped’ episode adorable? They would totally kick our asses in the kitchen. Just sayin’.”

We get inspiration for the dishes we use in our books from everywhere. TV shows (even non-foodie ones because characters on dramas and comedies still have to eat, right?), magazine articles, the web, and our friends. We even have a friend with whom we share special goodies with through the mail, because who doesn’t like to get a goodie package every now and then? The following recipe was one of the ones Jamie cooks when he and Ethan go back to the culinary institute for a charity event. We knew when we saw it that it had to be a part of our book. It’s super easy to make and is a perfect way to enjoy a lazy Sunday with family or friends. Bon appetite!

Almond French Toast

(6 servings)

  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 thick slices French bread
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • confectioners’ sugar for dusting (optional)

Place almonds in a small saucepan over low heat. Tossing frequently, toast until lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, flour, salt, baking powder, almond extract and vanilla extract. Soak bread slices in the mixture until saturated. Place slices in a shallow pan. Refrigerate slices approximately 1 hour.

Heat canola oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. One at a time, press one side of soaked bread slices in the almonds to coat. Fry bread slices on both sides until golden brown. Dust with confectioner’s sugar before serving.

Buttered Maple-Bourbon Syrup

    • 1 1/2 cups pure maple syrup
    • 1/4 cup softened butter
    • 1 tablespoon bourbon whiskey ( or 1/2 teaspoon bourbon extract)

Bring maple syrup and softened butter to a boil in medium saucepan.

Stir in 1 tablespoon bourbon whiskey or extract.

Serve warm over French Toast.

About In the Raw (In the Kitchen #1)

1If you can’t take the heat…

James Lassiter has had a crush on fellow culinary student Ethan Martin for three years, but has never had the guts to make a move. Putting himself out there is hard, especially when under the thumb–and wallet–of his overbearing parents. Now that bad boy chef Ethan–who is always vying with Jamie for best in class–is struggling with the pastry course, Jamie suddenly has a reason to reach out.

Ethan doesn’t mean to be an ass–okay, so mostly he does–but even though he’s secretly hot for Jamie, he sure as hell doesn’t want help with pastry. Ever since his dad walked out, Ethan has been the one to hold things together and he’s done fine on his own. Except that he can’t get his cake to rise.

Jamie could be the answer to what Ethan’s been missing his whole life–someone to depend on. But with the two competing for the same scholarship, things suddenly get too hot to handle. And if Jamie finds the strength to go for what he wants, he isn’t about to settle for what he needs.

About In the Fire (In the Kitchen #2)

1Because the way to a man’s heart…

Eight years ago, the world was their oyster. Until, that is, competing chefs Ethan Martin and James Lassiter’s hot and heavy relationship fizzled after Jamie left for an internship in Paris. Even though Jamie’s career has taken off since his return to the States, with his own television show and a lot of fame, his feelings for Ethan have never quite gone away.

Ethan’s culinary career has developed more slowly, but he’s almost saved enough to buy the restaurant where he works and re-open it as his dream spot, Bistro 30. If only he could get the sexy chef who loved him and left him out of his mind.

But when someone starts sabotaging the restaurant and a fire threatens to take away everything Ethan holds dear, his only option is to rely on Jamie for help. Back in close quarters, the two men will have to find a way to work through their past if they hope to save the restaurant and their future.

Heart by Garrett Leigh – Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

An Exclusive Excerpt from Heart

Dex laid his cheek on his bent knees. Mikey’s voice was far away, and he felt sleepy. He didn’t care about Mikey, or Braden, or their failed attempt to become big-time gangsters. He just wanted to sleep.

“Someone’s talking to the coppers.” Suddenly, Mikey was beside him again. “Braden thinks it’s you, but I know it’s not. You’re just a kid. You don’t know enough to stir up the shite that’s gone down. You don’t know the bloody half of it, and I’ll tell you one thing for nothing, kid. I’m not going down for no one, least of all that cunt.”

Mikey took hold of Dex’s chin. Dex flinched and confusion scattered his thoughts. Mikey was Braden’s right-hand man, stoic and loyal, and he’d never once shown a hint of dissent. And one of their own talking to the police? To the gorjers? No. It would never happen. Traveller silence was sacred. They didn’t talk to outsiders.

A vehicle rumbled into the muddy yard. Dex closed his eyes, knowing it was Braden. Mikey released him and stepped away. He called a terse greeting through the open door. Braden’s reply was gruff, and for a moment, Dex wondered if Mikey would make his move. Express his discontent and strike out. Kill Braden, or disable him. Perhaps there’d even be a moment for Dex to slip away. He wasn’t bound, and his legs still worked. He could run.

I can run.

But nothing happened. Mikey said no more and left the house, abandoning him to Braden’s ill will and deepening temper. Chains, leather belts, and iron bars. Dex bore it all in silence until his wrist bone broke with an audible snap.

Irish Traveller Dex is bewitching, a beautiful sullen enigma who turns Seb’s world upside down until he disappears in the night, vanishing like a mystical summer rain.

Twelve months later Dex is in the midst of a dark storm. A slave to his master, ‘Uncle’ Braden, he spends his days cleaning caravans and his nights working in Braden’s other businesses. His short summer with Seb seems a lifetime ago. Lost in the savage violence of the murky underworld, he doesn’t dare dream he’ll ever find his way back, until one night, a brutal crime opens the door for a chance escape. Top 5 Best Moments Between Brynn and Will from Made for You by Lauren Layne + Giveaway!

Made-For-You-Blog-Tour[1][1]

Top 5 Best Moments Between Brynn and Will

from Made for You by Lauren Layne

1) This “finale” is the best I’ve ever written. Or I think so, anyway.

2) The declaration scene. Aww, Will!!!

3) They go mattress shopping. It’s both sexy … and so not.

4) The “friend scenes” between Sophie and Will. I love a good platonic relationship that’s ACTUALLY platonic.

5) Pretty much ALL of the flashbacks. Normally I hate flashbacks in a story, but I had to do them here 🙂

About Made for You

1Three years ago, Brynn Dalton made a rare error in judgment and had a one-night stand with the one man she swore would never get into her designer panties. Will Thatcher was exactly the type of sexy playboy that good girls like Brynn stayed away from. And when Will moved across the country just days after their fling, Brynn vowed to put him behind her, even as the memories haunt her.

Now Will Thatcher is back, and just in time to see Brynn’s perfectly structured life begin to crumble. Her job is dull, her social life is tedious, and Brynn’s perfect cardiologist boyfriend doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to get to Tiffany & Co. More than ever, Brynn needs her childhood nemesis to keep his distance.

But Will isn’t content to be Brynn’s dirty little secret any longer. This time, he’s out to show Brynn Dalton that the imperfect man might just be the best mistake of her life.

Honorary Blogger Keira Andrews: Family, Faith and Giving it All Up for Love + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Family, Faith and Giving it All Up for Love

by Keira Andrews

One of the most surprising things I learned while researching my book A Forbidden Rumspringa was how many different sects there are within the Amish faith, and how different one group can be from another. For example, the Beachy Amish-Mennonites drive cars and use electricity. On the other end of the spectrum are the Swartzentruber Amish, who don’t have indoor plumbing. Just as all Italians aren’t alike, neither are the Amish.

I set my story in a fictional town in northern Minnesota called Zebulon. My characters are Swartzentruber Amish, and as such live very restrictive lives. One Swartzentruber tenet that I think symbolizes how they are different from other Amish is their refusal to use orange reflective triangles on their buggies. In Kentucky, some Swartzentruber men went to jail rather than compromise their belief that God will protect them on the road, and that shiny orange is just too vain.

Now imagine living in that kind of strict community and being dangerously different. For my two young Amish men, Isaac and David, the knowledge that they’re gay is something they struggle greatly to accept. They know that being openly gay and living a plain, Amish life is impossible, but they’re inexorably drawn to each other nonetheless.

Still, the decision to leave your family and community for the freedom of a different life isn’t an easy one. I’m not religious, but I know it would be very hard to disappoint my parents. For Isaac and David, they have to decide if being together is worth the potential heartache. Here’s more about their story and the tough choices they face…

blogger_bee_trans

About A Forbidden Rumspringa

5When two young Amish men find love, will they risk losing everything?

In a world where every detail of life—down to the width of a hat brim—is dictated by God and the all-powerful rules of the community, two men dare to imagine a different way. At 18, Isaac Byler knows little outside the strict Amish settlement of Zebulon, Minnesota, where there is no rumspringa for exploration beyond the boundaries of their insular world. Isaac knows he’ll have to officially join the church and find a wife before too long, but he yearns for something else—something he can’t name.

Dark tragedy has left carpenter David Lantz alone to support his mother and sisters, and he can’t put off joining the church any longer. But when he takes on Isaac as an apprentice, their attraction grows amid the sweat and sawdust. David shares his sinful secrets, and he and Isaac struggle to reconcile their shocking desires with their commitment to faith, family and community.

Now that they’ve found each other, are they willing to lose it all?

Note: Contains explicit sexual situations and graphic language. This is not an inspirational/Christian romance.

Research & Liberties – Mixing Historical with Fantasy

by L.A. Witt

So one of the fun parts with Precious Metals (as well as Noble Metals) was taking an actual historical era (the Klondike Gold Rush) and mixing it with steampunk.  I still had to research it like I would a standard historical novel, but I went at it with the mindset of “how would this be different with the addition of steampunk technology?”

The challenge there is keeping it true to the real history, but also realistically adapting it to the added technology. In that sense, it’s kind of like alternate history—if a certain event in history were changed, how would the world be affected? If the Klondike Gold Rush happened after the invention of airships and mechs to carry provisions, how would things be different?

Well, the consensus of all my research was this: the Klondike Gold Rush was miserable. It was dangerous, it was a grueling journey, and more people died along the way than found gold at the end. I mean, there’s a reason one of the trails was nicknamed Dead Horse Trail, and it wasn’t because a tree stump looked like a dead horse. Basically, once you left Seattle and headed north, life was going to suck until you made it back.

So, add steampunk technology. How would things change? There were a number of ways, of course, but I’m an author, and therefore a sadist of sorts. Thus, my answer to that question was: Things would get worse.

Yeah, we’ve got airships now that can whisk you to Dawson City in warm luxury…except they’re horrendously expensive and have a habit of crashing into mountainsides.

Oh, we’ve got mechs to carry your provisions so you don’t have to feed horses/mules or break your own back…but they’re clumsy, they break if a bird farts, and don’t do so well on ice. And there’s a lot of ice in Alaska.

And hey, getting over the Chilkoot Pass is easy now that you can do it in one shot! No more crossing the pass a dozen times, carrying whatever you can before walking back over to pick up another load of provisions. Because, hey, mechs!  Oh. Right. The pass is covered in ice. And a mech sliding down the Golden Staircase (1,500 steps carved into the ice) while loaded down with a half ton or so of provisions isn’t dangerous at all.

So we’d better make sure every mech is sure-footed and in good repair before it starts going over the pass. Which means the Mounties have now opened an encampment on the south side where they inspect mechs and provisions. Which slows everybody down. And ticks everybody off. And generally makes for a camp full of cranky prospectors who kind of wish these stupid mechs had never been invented.

And that’s how Noble Metals and Precious Metals came about—start with a real point in history, add technology that backfires, stir rapidly, and throw in a couple of boys who would really like to turn around and go home, but can’t.

About Precious Metals

22674209For Constable Paul Benson of the North-West Mounted Police, monotony is a blessing. As a provision inspector below the Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike Gold Rush, he’s seen miserable conditions and gold fever turn civilized prospectors into madmen.

Joseph Starling is on his way to the Klondike to find the men who savagely beat him, murdered his eldest brother, and stole their mining machine. They’ll kill his youngest brother if Joseph doesn’t operate the machine for them—it won’t work without him. With time running out, Joseph must purchase an expensive ticket aboard a crash-prone airship. But the station is miles away through dangerous terrain.

Under orders, Paul grudgingly escorts Joseph, but quickly finds himself intrigued by the young man. As they make their way toward Juneau, it’s not just the need for warmth that drives them closer together. But neither man can draw an easy breath until they make it to the gold fields . . . and there’s no guarantee that Joseph’s brother will still be alive when they do.

Honorary Blogger A.M. Arthur: The Evolution of Romy + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Evolution of Romy

by A.M. Arthur

Thank you so much to the Blogger Girls for having me on their blog to promote my October releases Foundation of Trust (Cost of Repairs #5) and Stand By You (Belonging #3). I’m so excited about these books, and particularly about the evolution of Romy Myers, one of the heroes of Stand By You.

Romy made his first appearance earlier this year in the first Belonging book, No Such Thing. At first, he was simply the guy that flirted and danced with that book’s heroes. And then he stuck around and went home with Ezra. I didn’t expect much out of the character, whose name wasn’t even Romy at the time (I honestly don’t remember what it was originally). And then he was gone and Ezra told his friends that Romy had scampered off early to a retail job.

Somehow I knew that was a lie. And I knew at some point he’d get his own novel, but I knew that Ezra had a bigger mouth and he was going to come first. So it didn’t surprise me when Romy reappeared in the second Belonging book, Maybe This Time. Except this Romy was different. He’d gotten himself in a bad spot, and he didn’t know how to get free. We see Romy once in the first half of the book, and then he disappears until the final few chapters. And once I realized why Romy needed help, I had to stop everything and write his back story. I had to know how this spirited young man had allowed his life to reach a very literal breaking point.

And it was during those final few chapters that I knew who Romy’s hero was going to be. I didn’t see it coming until Brendan picked up a baseball bat and went to help out a stranger, just because his best friend asked him to. Brendan was the kind of strong, gentle soul that Romy needed. The problem with Brendan, as is explored in more depth is Stand By You, is that he’s straight. Or at least, everyone thinks he is…

Once Brendan’s confusion over his sexuality was set, and Romy began to see Brendan as a stable, loving force in his life, the story (forgive me for the cliché) practically wrote itself. These two had a story to tell, and it was an absolute pleasure telling it. Brendan needed to take control of his life and be honest with the people he loved. Romy needed to find a safe place to heal, so he could allow himself to trust again. This book is so special to me, and I truly hope readers fall in love with Romy and Brendan like I did.

blogger_bee_trans

About Stand by You

Stand By You (Belonging #3)Three months after his rescue from an abusive boyfriend, twenty-two-year-old Romy Myers has landed his first legitimate job—bussing tables at his friend’s new coffee shop. The job has brought him some stability after years of abuse have left him feeling damaged and broken. He’s working hard on his panic and social anxiety, and those things are often tempered by the big, burly presence of Brendan Walker.

From the moment ex-football player Brendan helped rescue Romy from his ex’s abuse, he’s wanted to protect him. And he does, from a distance, with joking text messages, a new gym routine to toughen him up and a genuine friendship. So far it’s been easy—but Brendan’s feelings aren’t just friendly anymore…
When an argument spirals out of control, a hot and heavy make-out session causes Romy’s friendship with supposedly straight Brendan to reach a new level. The last thing Romy wants is to fall for another guy who could potentially shatter him, but Brendan also wakes up a part of him he thought had been destroyed by violence—his heart.

About Foundation of Trust

Foundation of Trust (Cost of Repairs, #5)David Weller thought he had it all—a loving partner who gave him a ring, a steady job he didn’t hate, and so much hope for the future. But in the wake of a devastating diagnosis, everything he thought was solid and real lay in pieces at his feet.

Four years later, he’s still sifting through the rubble of his life. His catering partnership occupies his days, while his nights are filled with dangerous sexual hookups and very bad decisions. Then the last person he ever expected to see again walks back into his life.

Owen Hart’s single biggest regret is the way he was forced to leave David behind—no explanations, no chance to make it right. Until now. Finally free of eight years of lies, Owen’s back for the only man he’s ever loved.

An incendiary encounter in a club proves that time hasn’t weakened their physical connection, but David’s wounds run deeper than Owen’s deception. And if David can’t first forgive, Owen doesn’t have a second chance in hell.

Warning: This book contains an Australian transplant with a head full of secrets, a party planner with enough baggage to sink a battleship, and a surly teenager who just wants them both to get over themselves.

About Author

A.M. Arthur was born and raised in the same kind of small town that she likes to write about, a stone’s throw from both beach resorts and generational farmland.  She’s been creating stories in her head since she was a child and scribbling them down nearly as long, in a losing battle to make the fictional voices stop.  She credits an early fascination with male friendships (bromance hadn’t been coined yet back then) and “The Young Riders” with her later discovery of and subsequent love affair with m/m romance stories.

When not exorcising the voices in her head, she toils away in a retail job that tests her patience and gives her lots of story fodder.  She can also be found in her kitchen, pretending she’s an amateur chef and trying to not poison herself or others with her cuisine experiments.

Contact her at am_arthur@yahoo.com with your cooking tips (or book comments). You can also find her online, as well as on Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook. A.M. Arthur’s work is available from Samhain Publishing, Carina Press, Dreamspinner Press, and Musa Publishing.

Honorary Blogger Jet Mykles: Rock Stars. Who Knew? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Rock Stars. Who Knew?

by Jet Mykles

When I started this writing gig back in 2005, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be writing rock stars. No, I was — still am — a fantasy/paranormal girl. That’s what I like to read and my first series at Loose Id is high fantasy (Dark Elves). That’s what’s always intrigued me.

So, why rock stars? Well, have you seen Johnnie and Luc? Yeah, I was a goner. Many of my younger years were dedicated to a serious Duran Duran obsession and I think the love of a fan comes through in that series, although my band bears only a little resemblance to the fantasies of my youth. I mean, really. I’ve heard of bands that get along but my guys are just too good to each other. And to have them all turn gay when they didn’t start off that way? So actually I was still writing fantasy.

Seriously though, I had just started writing m/m and only had one that was published at the time (the original Snagged). I’d had enough discussions with one of my mentors and she convinced me that I could do this gay thing. So I had two ideas for my next story, one was about a technical support guy and another was about a hotel manager and a rock star. Loose Id chose the rock star. Johnnie Heaven was born. And isn’t he larger than life? The hair was the first thing that solidified, then the eyes. There was no doubt he was the lead singer. He kind of had to be. But Tyler cinched it for me. Coming up with my clueless hotel manager was a pleasure. He jumped off the page, seemingly unassuming, but he stole my heart as quickly as he stole Johnnie’s.

The story, as I remember it, was a pleasure to write. Perhaps I’m forgetting some pain, but it was years ago so I can be forgiven. I know there are at least two scenes in the book that were originally written for other stories. I will admit to being hugely into yaoi at the time so that was a heavy influence. It was a hit with my critique partners and with my beta readers.

Then came Luc. He started taking over while I was still writing Heaven, to be honest. Which is probably why he serves as Johnnie’s competition for a while. Luc is everything that made my younger heart race, down to the instrument he plays. Johnnie was the lure but Luc was it for me. I so wanted to be Reese!

That’s not to say that I don’t love Brent, Hell and Darien. I do (although, Brent and Hell gave me fits writing that book so I wasn’t so happy with them at the time). I also love the guys in the Indigo Knights. But I have to admit that Heaven Sent is all about Johnnie and Luc for me, even now.

So, to all you Heaven Sent fans out there, thanks so much for following me and the boys through their journey. And, by the way, the technical support guy story? I did write it. It’s called Tech Support.

About Indigo Knights 4: Noble

Donny “Foxy” Foxley is hot. Noble knows it. All those screaming teen girls know it. And so does the production company with their millions staked on the teen idol’s dreamy good looks.

So when the supposedly straight movie star comes onto him, Noble is floored. Never one to ignore the allure of a pretty young man, Noble can’t resist and doesn’t even try. Why should he? Even if it has to be a secret, he’d be crazy to pass up a night of sexytimes with the one man everyone wants.

But one night turns into two, then blossoms into a friendship with the potential for so much more. If that’s what Noble was after, which he’s not. But Foxy gets under Noble’s skin until he cares way too much. Because there can never be anything but sex between them. To the world, Foxy is straight and Noble is anything but.

As far back as junior high, Jet used to write sex stories for friends involving their favorite pop icons of the time. To this day, she hasn’t stopped writing sex, although her knowledge on the subject has vastly improved.

An ardent fan of fantasy and science fiction sagas, Jet prefers to live in a world of imagination where dragons are real, elves are commonplace, vampires are just people with special diets and lycanthropes live next door.
