blogger_bee_transAbout When All the World Sleeps:

When All the World Sleeps by Lisa Henry and J.A. RockDaniel Whitlock is terrified of going to sleep. And rightly so: he sleepwalks, with no awareness or memory of his actions. Including burning down Kenny Cooper’s house—with Kenny inside it—after Kenny brutally beat him for being gay. Back in the tiny town of Logan after serving his prison sentence, Daniel isolates himself in a cabin in the woods and chains himself to his bed at night.

Like the rest of Logan, local cop Joe Belman doesn’t believe Daniel’s absurd defense. But when Bel saves Daniel from a retaliatory fire, he discovers that Daniel might not be what everyone thinks: killer, liar, tweaker, freak. Bel agrees to control Daniel at night—for the sake of the other townsfolk. Daniel’s fascinating, but Bel’s not going there.

Yet as he’s drawn further into Daniel’s dark world, Bel finds that he likes being in charge. And submitting to Bel gives Daniel the only peace he’s ever known. But Daniel’s demons won’t leave him alone, and he’ll need Bel’s help to slay them once and for all—assuming Bel is willing to risk everything to stand by him.

You can read an excerpt and purchase When All the World Sleeps here.

blogger_bee_transAbout the Authors

Lisa Henry lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

You can visit Lisa herwebsite, at Goodreads, or onFacebook or Twitter.

*****

J.A. Rock has worked as a dog groomer, knife seller, haunted house zombie, standardized patient, cashier, census taker, state fair quilt hanger, and, for one less-than-magical evening, a server—and would much rather be writing about those jobs than doing them. J.A. lives mostly in West Virginia, and always with a beloved dog, Professor Anne.

You can visit J.A. at her website, her blog, or on Twitter or Facebook.

Honorary Blogger: Rhys’ Ramblings + Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Post

TBG: Rhys Ford is here today talking about…well, a variety of things.  Plus, she has a new book releasing this week from Dreamspinner Press, Dirty Deeds, which is book 4 of her very popular Cole McGinnis Series.  Anyone remember the crazy ending of Dirty Laundry??!!  She’s also here to give away a $20 Amazon gift card (or other e-tailer).  Thank you, Rhys, for all that you do!

Rhys’ Ramblings

I’ve always told stories.

Even as a little kid… a very grubby little kid… I told them to my friends. Friends who were more often than not, stuffed animals and dolls. I would read things and pretty much act them out with my fuzzy companions. Sometimes, on the rare occasion when there was a live flesh friend to play with, we were superheroes or pirates or samurai. Ninja sometimes. Secret Ninja Circus was on television… KIKU was the Japanese station and it’s the only clear one we got. Most of the television I watched had subtitles and well, reading was a good skill to have if you wanted to keep straight who the hell was whom in a black mask.

I watched Kikaida, Kamen Raida and Princess Knight. Most of my role models were male or in the case of PK, a female who went around pretending to be male as a disguise.

None of that made me feel like being female was to be weak. I never connected the two. Life just was what it was and if I wanted to be Kikaida that day, I was just male in my head.

Some people have said this is a gender fluidity. I’m all… nah, it’s just that I don’t cleave to stereotypes. Boxes marked boy and girl were never comfortable so I never wore them. I began to feel uncomfortable later when people started saying things like; oh she’s very butch so she’s a lesbian. Which was confusing because I’m about as attracted to another female as a gay guy. For me, the feminine bits were never exotic and beautiful. They were kinda odd looking and for God’s sake, couldn’t we have gotten the pee standing up thing? What was with this squatting shit?

My brain often took a left turn at logic. Because, you see, there were other things to be interested in than what box I could fit in.
Stories unfolded. Emotions were felt. Things explored and re-explored if it made me feel good inside. As the world outside of me crumbled and turned to pain, I hid in the words in my head, cloaking myself in other bits and pieces I knitted myself. Because I could live in my own head if need be.

And I did for quite a long time.

But time passed. And I passed different points in my life where I no longer needed to shut down and realized, I was okay with who I was. Who I’d made as this person. There were things to work on. God so many things but the word… the world building… the stories…the personalities shouldn’t be shoved aside like a child’s box of broken crayons.

This was something I’d done all my life. I’d watched people and made up stories about what they did or who they loved. I’d read what people did with one another; in a store while they walked about with tight body language or even sometimes a brief glance of affection when having dinner. Most often I watched as people lived around one another instead of with each other. And while that made me sad inside, it made me realize that sometimes, people just existed.

You see, I never wanted to just exist. I kind of wanted to wade into life and remain…that little grubby kid.

I write like how I want to live. I want to be armpit deep in the filth and beauty of the human being. I want to hear the arguments and wear the laughter. And that’s what I hope to bring the reader. Sometimes not the prettiest of stories but definitely the most… grubby.

I think the best stories are the grubby ones. Really. When the reader isn’t too certain that things are going to be okay. Where there has to be faith in the writer. Where sometimes a little blood might be spilled in order for the story to go forward.

But most of all, they should be fun.

In Dirty Deeds, I’m definitely going to get the reader a bit grubby. I get Cole very grubby. This is a book where he’s had to take a step back and look at where he is. He’s… happy. Really. But there are things out there that are a bit… unsettled and Cole being Cole, he’s got to go out there and see why. And to uncover the things he’s got buried in his own back yard.

But oh, best part about getting a character grubby? He can take a hell of a long time getting clean again.

It’s also a hell of a lot of fun showing how he gets clean. And isn’t that a big part of why we write or read about two men in love? The showers? Okay and other things—but the showers. *grins*

So I imagine I’ll continue to tell stories. For a while still. For as long as I can imagine worlds and personalities and well, for as long as anyone continues to read them. Maybe even beyond.

blogger_bee_trans Dirty Deeds by Rhys Ford

(Book 4 in the Cole McGinnis Series)

Dirty Deeds by Rhys FordBlurb: Sheila Pinelli needed to be taken out.

Former cop turned private investigator Cole McGinnis never considered committing murder. But six months ago, when Jae-Min’s blood filled his hands and death came knocking at his lover’s door, killing Sheila Pinelli became a definite possibility.

While Sheila lurks in some hidden corner of Los Angeles, Jae and Cole share a bed, a home, and most of all, happiness. They’d survived Jae’s traditional Korean family disowning him and plan on building a new life—preferably one without the threat of Sheila’s return hanging over them.

Thanks to the Santa Monica police mistakenly releasing Sheila following a loitering arrest, Cole finally gets a lead on Sheila’s whereabouts. That is, until the trail goes crazy and he’s thrown into a tangle of drugs, exotic women, and more death. Regardless of the case going sideways, Cole is determined to find the woman he once loved as a sister and get her out of their lives once and for all.

Nothing Special by A.E. Via: Excerpt + Giveaway

An Excerpt from Nothing Special

by A.E. Via

“I’m going to get some coffee.” Day walked off, leaving God to answer the unnecessary questions.

As soon as Day turned into the kitchen he skidded to a halt. Fuck, not right now.

“Well hello, Day. I was hoping to see you today,” Detective Johnson continued stirring his coffee.

“How’s it going?” Day said dryly and went about setting up his coffee machine.

“It’s going better now that I’m seeing you.” Detective Johnson came over to Day and stood over him. Day had to practically reach around the tall man to start the machine. “Dude, want to give me a little room here.”

“No. I like being close to you.” Detective Johnson took one long finger and slowly dragged it down the front of Day’s chest.

“Well fuckin’ unlike it.” They both jumped at the sound of God’s gruff voice.

God walked up to Day and grabbed him by the back of his neck. He spun Day around so hard that he dropped the small packs of sugar to the floor. All he could do was hold on to God’s massive biceps as he ravaged his mouth. Day let God completely control him until he was done proving his point. God released him and Day practically fell back into the counter.

“Fuck, Cash,” Day whispered, completely out of breath. After Day got his wits about him he noticed that God and Johnson were in a serious stare off over his head.

Johnson broke first and looked down at Day.

“You’re fucking God now?” Johnson asked disbelievingly.

“Okay, that just sounds wrong saying it like that, so I’m not going to comment.” Day inched away from the two giants and propped himself up on one of the break-room tables. “I think I’ll watch this one from the sidelines.”

“You’re goddamn right he’s with me. So you have to find someone else to harass every day, Johnson.” God huffed. “Or are you going to run tell daddy?”

Johnson stepped closer to God and Day watched God’s nonchalant reaction to the detective’s scowl.

“I didn’t know you batted for my team, God.”

“Johnson, even if you were on the all-star team I wouldn’t bat for your team. I’m with Day and that’s just it.” God crossed his arms.

“Well a man like Day requires commitment, effort, someone to put in full-time work. You are more of a detached from society kind of guy aren’t you, God? I mean are you up for that type of job to keep him yours?” Johnson smirked and took a sip of his coffee.

“Yeah, I know all about that job, Johnson, because I worked the hell out of it last night.” God stepped in even closer and mock whispered. “But you know what the difference is between me and you and our jobs? I usually quit mine, you end up getting fired. But seriously. You can stop applying with Day, because the position’s been fuckin’ filled.” God caught the muffin Day threw at him and walked out the door.

Day did very little to hide his grin as he drank his coffee.

Tournament of Shadows by S.A. Meade: Excerpt + Giveaway

 Blogger_Giveaway

S.A. Meade: The first part of my newest release, Tournament of Shadows, is set in Central Asia, in what is now known as Uzbekistan. A great deal of the country is given over to desert and, back in the 19th century, travel from one place to the next was fraught with difficulties, ranging from the arid conditions, capricious emirs and bandits. This scene from the book gives a little glimpse into dealing with one of those hazards.

Valentin checked his rifle and set his musket on the ground beside him. I peered over the wall.

“Anything?”

“Not yet. At least we have a little time.” I passed him a canteen of water. “You’ll need this.”

He took a sip, then wiped his mouth. “I hope the bastards don’t keep us waiting. I hate the waiting.”

I rested my rifle on the wall and leaned against the warm stone. “So do I. Dare I ask if you’re a decent shot?”

He grinned. “One of the best in my regiment. You?”

“Passable.”

“That’s not very comforting.”

“I’ll get by. Shall we have a competition? The person who shoots the least has to make dinner.”

“Challenge accepted.” He held his hand out.

I shook it. Reluctant to let go. The fearful wreck seemed to have disappeared for the moment. The old Valentin had returned, eyes alight with the thrill of facing danger.

Valentin edged closer until his shoulder rested against mine. His presence quelled the churning in my gut. I suddenly felt able to take on an entire army if I had to.

“We’ll be fine.”

“If you say so.”

He brushed his lips over mine for the briefest of moments. Desire almost overcame my apprehension. I wanted to grab him and take him there and then. Valentin stepped back and turned towards the road. Several specks materialised in the distance, their presence heralded by a drift of dust.

I loaded gunpowder and a ball into the barrel, rested the rifle on the wall and waited for our visitors to come within range.

Valentin stood beside me, finger already on the trigger as he readied his aim. The bandits drew closer.

Five hundred yards.

Four hundred yards.

“Ready?” Valentin shouldered his rifle and squinted, creases fan-tailing away from the corner of his eyes.

“Yes.” I raised the gun and, when I judged the first of the horsemen to be within three hundred yards, took aim, winced at the recoil then ducked to avoid the returning gunfire.

“You missed.” Valentin pulled his trigger.

A distant yelp and a horse reeling around told me that his shot had found its mark. “Well done.”

He grinned and loaded another round while I made ready to fire my second.

This time my shot found its target. Another bandit tumbled to the dirt.

“Bugger.” Valentin’s second went wide.

Puffs of dust and the mosquito drone of bullets drove us to seek cover behind the wall. I hurriedly loaded my third as the relentless tattoo of hoof beats grew louder. “How many left?”

Valentin popped his head above our makeshift parapet then dived for cover. “Three.”

I took aim and squeezed the trigger. The recoil bit into my shoulder. I’d feel that in the morning, if we survived. My intended target screeched and tumbled from his horse. I found grim satisfaction in the moment, knowing that if the bugger had survived, I’d be the one being killed.

“Two left.” Valentin fired his third round off quickly then scrambled to the ground when one of our attackers fired back. “Persistent bastards.”

“Only two?” I peered over the wall. “There’s only one left now.” I fired at the sod. My shot went wide, feathering the dust somewhere to the right of the horseman. He hauled his animal to a sliding stop and let loose a stream of colourful curses, before wheeling around and charging past the bodies of his fallen comrades.

“Shall we let him go?” Valentin poured more powder into his barrel, tamped it down and dropped the ball in.

“So he can get help? No.”

“Right then.” He lifted the rifle, braced himself and fired. The survivor dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes, leaving his horse to chase after its comrades. “I believe it’s your turn to make dinner.”

20721879In a shadowy game where defeat can mean death, a deal with the enemy can change things forever.

In 1842, Captain Gabriel O’Riordan of the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars is sent on a mission to Bukhara. His task—to try to free two of his compatriots from the clutches of a mentally unstable Emir. On his way, he encounters Valentin Yakolev, an officer in the Russian Army, who is also on a mission—to persuade the Emir that an alliance with Russia would be in his best interests. Gabriel, disguised as a holy man, is not happy to be the object of Yakolev’s intense scrutiny. After all, he’s working for the opposing team in the Great Game being played between their two nations. When Gabriel realises that his mission is little more than a forlorn hope, a game he has no chance of winning, he’s desperate enough to turn to Valentin to help and offer him anything in return. What he doesn’t expect is to have his plans to return to Calcutta scuppered by events.

Instead, he and Valentin flee north, fighting off bandits, their desire for each other and the hardship of desert travel. Their travails bring them closer together until a secret from Valentin’s past tears them apart.

Can they set the past behind them and move on together?

Honorary Blogger Jayson James: How T.E.D. Came to Be + Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Post

How T.E.D. Came to Be

by Jayson James

Let me start out by thanking The Blogger Girls for having me as the guest blogger today. Although this is not the first time I have been asked to be a guest blogger, as I thought about what I was going to write I became more excited. By the time I sat down (the first three times) I was so giddy, I could not write.

Today I am here to talk about my newest book, T.E.D. It is about three guys whose lives intertwine as they each deal with the struggles that come along with being teenagers and the mounting problems in each of their lives.

I thought I would talk about how T.E.D. came to be. The idea was one I’d had for several years, but kept in my head. The initial story was about a character who wrote journal entries about the frequent abuse and bullying he was dealing with at school. His best friend happened to be a girl and although those around him thought they should be more than friends, the attraction was missing. This boy is labeled a “fag” although he is not gay. One character in particular keeps on hounding him in hopes to win over his friend. This boy ends up killing himself. Then the story dealt with the struggles and experiences of the best friend and the bully left behind.

I can imagine what you, the reader might be thinking, “Wait a minute, he just gave away the plot of his book.” Have no fear. When I started writing the book, the story changed. As you can see by the cover, there are three guys standing together. The girl best friend became a guy and I twisted and tweaked the plot quite a bit.

Like all my previous published books, T.E.D. Takes place in Chandler, Washington. For those who have my “Finding Their Way” series this story takes place when Derrick, Justin and gang are in middle school. There are a few characters that readers of my other books will recognize in this book.

Something I often get emails about (and some critiques) is writing books that shift from each characters’ point of view. In T.E.D., as with my previous three books, I thought that the story would be better told from each characters’ perspective although here Eric and Delsin’s parts are told in third person. I felt this gave the story flow and let the reader gain a deeper insight into the events taking place around Tim’s journal entries.

T.E.D. focuses on three guys that are all flawed, yet likable characters. I wanted them to be real people that my readers could identify with emotionally and also relate to on some level. Tim is a kid you feel sorry for and you want to give him advice how to better his life, and eventually you want to tell to quit being a wimp. Eric is a character hiding his fear of being discovered by picking on others. Delsin is supportive and does what he can, but is dealing with his own issues. Their lives are connected, having an effect on the others.

I am excited to have released a book that is outside of my popular series and I hope that my current readers are as pleased with the new cast of characters as I am.

About Jayson James

Jayson James graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. He was born and raised in Washington State, where he currently lives and teaches. The farthest off the west coast he has ever been was Nevada and Arizona. Whenever Jayson has the time (and money), he likes to travel, hoping to see most of the United States over the next 5 years.

After much prompting from his friends “Finding Our Way” debut in September 2012 as Jayson James first published novel. A couple months later, he wrote and released the follow-up novels in 2013, “Tormented Discovery” and then “Drifting” creating what readers would identify as the “Finding Our Way Series.” Thanks to his dedicated editor and friend, a novel outside of the series will be released in early 2014. Jayson has at least one more novel releasing with the same characters in the series, but is not sure when this will be. Much to his delight, fans are eagerly waiting to read what happens next with Justin, Derrick and the rest of the gang. He hopes they will enjoy the new characters he brings to life on the pages of upcoming books.

When Jayson is not writing he enjoys reading a variety of books from different genres. He is an avid supporter of fellow Indy authors and does whatever he can to support them. Although he often denies it when asked, he also likes to draw, mostly cartooning and sketching using pencils and oil pastels. He also loves listening to music and watching movies, one or the other is constantly playing every time he is writing or drawing and even sometimes when he is reading.

Although his first published works are of the gay new adult and gay young adult genre, he plans on publishing books of other genres at some point. Such as a children’s book he has been contemplating for many years.

Find Jayson on his Website, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads and Amazon.

About T.E.D.

TIM is being bullied. No one in high school wants to be known as a tattle-tale and to do so would only make things rougher for him. The repercussions would most likely make him an outcast, and without any friends.

ERIC is frustrated with life. His parents are overbearing and if they ever knew the person he really was, they would throw him out of their house. His friends are not much better, they only like him when he is who they expect him to be.

DELSIN is gay and ready to come out. Unfortunately, life at home is on the brink of falling apart with his parents constant fighting. Admitting the truth could bring his whole world crashing down around him.

Each of these three needs to decide whether the risks of being honest about who they are outweighs the importance of being true to themselves. This could mean ruining life as each of them knows it. Maybe it is better to remain miserable in order to play it safe. On the other hand, doing nothing doesn’t seem to working either.

Shift it with Jackie Nacht

First I’d like to thank Blogger Girls for having me here today. Thank you!

I’m extremely excited to introduce you all to Moon Compound.

I knew when I started writing that I wanted to write a shifter series. I love paranormal and have always been fascinated by it. However, I also knew that if I didn’t bring something new to the table so to speak, that the series as a whole would be boring.

Therefore, I analyzed the procedure of the shift, what packs did for the individual and well…asked myself a lot of questions. Then I took my answers up a notch and threw a couple of rules out the window. I love breaking rules. LOL

In Moon Compound series, shifters take years to control their shift, hence the reason why they are locked up. Packs send their pre-transition twenty-two year olds to go live at the compound. It’s a little cross between a prison, since they are locked up on the full moon, and a home.  The pre-shifters will live there until they get control of their shift and with some shifters, it can take quite a few years. Medical staff is on hand to help them afterward, since shifts are extremely painful.

The other part of Moon Compound is that while it focuses strongly on a mated pair in each book, there is an underlying plot that carries from book to book. Each book reveals more to the plot and opens up the world.  That world involves their enemies, Hellhounds.

For those that have read some of my books, this is very different to my typical sweet and light writing. Moon Compound had a dark and gritty edge to it that flows throughout the series. My goal is to continue to surprise readers and give them a wild ride.

Again, thank you Blogger Girls for having me here today. Have a great week everyone. Hugs!

About Jackie:

Short, sexy and sweet—where a little love goes a long way.

That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. I was introduced to M/M Romance through my sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, I thought it was time to put my own stories on paper. I began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after…and sometimes more than one, in the case of my YA Fork in the Road series, which has interactive endings.

Thinking back to my own book addiction, where there were many nights I stayed up way too late so I could read just one more chapter—yeah, right—I decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students, or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and at my webpage: www.jackienacht.com.

Waiting for Rain: Promo + Giveaway!

Waiting for Rain by Susan Mac Nicol

Blurb: The village of Stamford, the quintessential chocolate box English scene, seemed an impossible dream for foster kid Toby Prentiss. Now he’s found a home among the haystacks and village fairs as the general manager for the Duck and Drake Hotel. With the fears and demons from his youth hidden away in this bucolic oasis, he’s very protective of who he lets in. Until he stumbles across shirtless carpenter Rain Engel building the hotel’s new custom-designed bar.

Working in the countryside, Rain prepared to face his biggest fear: sheep. He didn’t expect to deal with his second biggest fear: commitment. Toby’s controlled tough guy façade coupled with his “find happiness where you can” optimism calls to Rain like nothing before. While Rain may be an exhibitionist, his romantic history forces him to hold his emotions close. As their relationship develops, secrets from their pasts drive a wedge between them: the ex-boyfriend who tore apart Rain’s trust and Toby’s history with the law. But can the secrets hiding among the quirky villagers bring them together? With missing sheep, pole dancing at the winter festival, and a crippling drought, everyone is waiting for Rain.
