On Invading GRL Groups

by Erica Pike

J.P. Barnaby wrote an excellent blog post on August 19th on Prism Book Alliance where she said “Your authors are probably more afraid of you than you are of them.” She was encouraging readers to walk up to their favorite authors and say hi, even if the authors are already talking to a group of other people.

She couldn’t be more right. You’re the humans and we’re the spiders. We may seem intimidating and look like an ugly eight-legged species, but we’re usually more afraid of you than you are of us. Like spiders (at least the Icelandic ones) we won’t bite if you walk up to us and say hi. We’ll be flattered and happy that someone wants to talk to us.

J.P. also talked about how authors sometimes hang out in tight groups with other authors. This is to give us some semblance of security so we won’t stand alone in a corner and fiddle with our badge. See, most of us are either social phobic or introvert, even though we might not come off as such when we’re in the GRL high (I’ve been told I come off as very outgoing at GRL). Hanging out in groups doesn’t mean we don’t want to be approached. It’s just like how readers tend to hang out in groups, enjoying the security of having someone by their side.

Is your favorite author sitting on a couch with his/her nose buried in his/her phone? Interrupt! 99.99% of the time, that phone is a security device because the author feels silly about sitting there by him/herself doing nothing.

It’s much easier for me to walk up to another author and chat instead of a group of readers, possibly because I now know that authors are just as “normal” as other people. I sometimes want to invade a group of readers to talk, because they look like they’re having so much fun, but I don’t know how to, so I can very well put myself in the position of a reader afraid to approach a group of chatting authors. What am I afraid of? I’m afraid that the readers will put up blank faces when they read my name tag, so my attempt to chat will look like some lame promo endeavor. I’m afraid that I’ll be interrupting something important, because everyone is talking so animatedly, laughing and having so much fun. I wouldn’t want to ruin that. I’m social phobic, and although I’ve had treatment for it, it still always lurks underneath. Because of that, I’m afraid that once I start talking, I’ll say something stupid or clog up and look stupid. No one wants to look stupid! Be it authors or readers.

The point is that the two groups – readers and authors – are exactly the same. Authors are just people. We don’t look at ourselves in the mirror every day and say, “You’re a bestselling author – you’re on a higher tier than everyone else.” We’re very well aware that we’re on the exact same tier as everyone else. My daily life isn’t much different from anyone else’s. I just happened to write some books, because I love writing. The whole point of GRL is for readers and authors to get to know each other, and yet there’s this gap between us. I want to breach that gap – even if they aren’t MY readers.

Here’s my challenge for readers who really want to talk to their favorite authors, but are too afraid to: Write a list! Write down to whom you want to talk and a couple of questions or topics you’d want to talk to them about. It could be about a character you loved, your favorite scene in a book, questions about future books, insider information about a character (we all have those – not everything makes it into the books), why a character did this instead of that, etc. Or you could skip the book talk altogether and talk about the retreat. You could have the list in a small pocketbook you carry with you and glance at the questions before you approach the author. Don’t worry about the conversation ending up on an embarrassing note, because the author will most likely want to continue to talk to you. Be aware, though, that some of us have no idea how to take a compliment, so we might smile like idiots and say something like, “Awww, thank you!” However, most will try to shed their shyness and continue the conversation. You could write down questions for several authors in case you happen to see one. If the authors aren’t on the run into a conference room, they’ll probably have time to talk – or they’ll make time because meeting the readers and making new friends is what we’re there for.

Here’s my personal challenge: I’m going to “invade” a group of readers at least once during this year’s retreat. I want to be a part of the fun! I also have favorite authors I’d like to discuss with others and I like to hear about how people are experiencing GRL.

My question for your guys is: As a reader, if an author (known-to-you or not) stepped up to you or your group to talk, what would you think of it? How would you react? Or, if you’re an author, how would you feel if a reader stepped up to you to talk?

About Erica Pike

Erica lives in Iceland with her adorable little twin boys. She often says that her real name sounds like Klingon to foreigners. Seriously, if “Eyjafjallajokull” looks like a random string of characters it’s nothing in comparison to Erica’s name.

She’s been writing for several years, or ever since reading became an obsession. Aside from a business degree, Erica has taken English courses at the University of Iceland and gulped down anything that might help her in her career as an author. She takes great interest in English, but will break every single grammar rule for the sake of The Voice.

Erica loves hearing from her readers. She’s a friendly, easy-going (if a bit silly) person who doesn’t mind talking about herself in third person.

Legends and Reality

by Chris Quinton

One of the fascinating things about myths and legends  is the way that sometimes they’re based on fact. The legends of Lyonesse are firmly lodged in the hearts of the people of the UK’s West Country, and the stories of Ys are remembered by the people of Brittany across the English Channel. Both of them have similarities with the stories of Atlantis, rich lands destroyed by the folly of those who lived there.

The facts that gave birth to these stories? In the West Country it’s the remnants of old stone field walls that march down some beaches to disappear into the sea. It’s the Isles of Scilly off the toe of Cornwall’s Land’s End, which once were part of a much larger landmass. And before that, underwater archaeology has shown us that Mesolithic and Neolithic hunters lived and hunted the low-lying land that is now the North Sea. Doggerland, the archaeologists have called it, after the Dogger Bank, a shallow area of sea over a treacherous sand bank about sixty miles off the east coast.

Even more telling is Google Earth. Pull the image right back, and you can clearly see the shape of the ancient continent that once existed above the waves. With the melting of the great ice sheets, slowly and inexorably the sea levels rose. Ten thousand years ago [give or take a few thousands] the islands that now form Eire, the British Isles and the politically attached Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are all that survived the inundation.

The legends tell of church bells ringing beneath the storm-wracked sea, of lights burning in drowned houses, the cries of the people as the sea destroyed their land, are the window-dressing, of course. But beneath them are the deep-seated racial memories of hunting grounds slowly washed away, of marshes becoming standing water that gradually formed the ever-widening river that is now the English Channel.

The erosion is still happening. The storms that recently battered England’s coasts have eaten away at cliffs and beaches alike. In a couple of hundred years, despite the factual archives stored of the drama and damage, what new legends will have evolved?

About Greymalkin (Melusine’s Cats #1)

11The mutual attraction between Jesse and Will is a bonus for Melusine when her enemies close in and she needs to rebuild her war band—starting with Jesse, Will, and Greymalkin.

Jesse Adams is an ex-rugby player who’s gone into seclusion to avoid the media following a guilty verdict in a court case. Jesse has come to live for a year in Greenlynn, where he is supposed to be writing his biography.

Will Blake is an out and proud policeman, respected and liked by the community he helps to protect from rural crime.

When the two men meet their attraction is instant, but they have no idea their love will draw them into a centuries’ old conflict.

Melusine, a deity of rivers and seas,  long ago lost the Battle of the Betrayal and is imprisoned in a nexus centred on the source of the Lynn River. She can only travel in the flowing water of her river, and cannot set foot on her banks. Her cats are not so bound. Neither pets nor familiars, they move freely between the realities, her agents among the humans who live along the Lynn.

When Melusine’s enemies come to the valley in search of revenge, Jesse and Will discover they have a part to play in the ancient feud. Do they commit to becoming part of a mythical triad, or leave the valley and forget they ever knew that magic exists?

About Chris Quinton

Chris started creating stories not long after she mastered joined-up writing, somewhat to the bemusement of her parents and her English teachers. But she received plenty of encouragement. Her dad gave her an already old Everest typewriter when she was ten, and it was probably the best gift she’d ever received – until the inventions of the home-computer and the worldwide web.

Chris’s reading and writing interests range from historical, mystery, and paranormal, to science-fiction and fantasy, writing mostly in the male/male genre. She refuses to be pigeon-holed and intends to uphold the long and honourable tradition of the Eccentric Brit to the best of her ability. In her spare time [hah!] she reads, embroiders, quilts and knits. Over the years she has been a stable lad [briefly] in a local racing stable and stud, a part-time and unpaid amateur archaeologist, a civilian clerk at her local police station and a 15th century re-enactor.

She lives in a small and ancient city in the south-west of the United Kingdom, sharing her usually chaotic home with an extended family, three dogs, a frilled dragon [lizard] and sundry goldfish.

Favorable Moments

by A.E. Via

Hello my lovely readers!

Thank you for visiting here with me today on Blogger Girls site to talk about my newest release: Embracing His Syn. Syn’s book is not a sequel to Nothing Special, it can stand alone. But, a few of the main characters from Nothing Special act as some very entertaining supporting characters in this story. So feel free to pick that up after.

If you are a fan of my previous work than you already know I’m a huge lover of take-charge, alpha gay men and Syn definitely fits into that category. He’s full of attitude, bravado, and overwhelming protectiveness…especially when it comes to Furious (my other MC).  So if those sexy traits do it for you, then Embracing His Syn is the next book you want to one-click.

Now. I’ve come up with a pretty awesome post – which is my 5 favorite moments while writing/developing Embracing His Syn. I’m going to throw in Nothing Special as well, because I think some people may be very interested in how I came up with God and Day as well as Syn and Furi.

Here we go….

5. Highly enjoyed running my thoughts and scenes over with a couple of my contacts in the VB Police Department. These men are a part of the vice squad but are highly trained and very lethal…in my opinion. They are friends of the family. Neither are gay (unfortunately, or else I’d pick their brain on a few other things as well. *winking*). Listening to some of their stories was very exhilarating. They really are a couple of alpha-studs. It was important to me writing a police story, to have the scenes/codes/lingo, of law enforcement officers to be realistic. Nothing Special and Syn’s story is still fiction so I wanted it to be over-the-top-dirty-harry style, but not too ridiculous. Hopefully I didn’t blow it.

4. I loved meeting my new editor in the making of Syn’s story. If some of you may recall, I had some issues with editing in Nothing Special – that was provided through my previous publisher. There were typos, misspellings, etc. I was determined to let readers know that I heard their complaints and was doing something to remedy the problem. Tina Adamski was my solution. She was absolutely awesome, even after I put her on a tight deadline. She had her work cut out for her, because when my mind is flying, my fingers have a hard time keeping up. Typing at 88wpm, there are bound to be errors, okay. She looked at a sample of my work and I was immediately taken with her professional attitude and knowledge of fictional editing. I think you’ll see for yourself when you read the book. I’m so glad to have worked with her and look forward to utilizing her expertise with my future work.

3. Next, was meeting my cover artist, Princess So. I walked past her booth at RainbowCon in April of this year and was floored at the art and detail that was displayed on some of her sample covers. She is an extremely talented artist and I knew I’d want her to do my next cover. What’s so memorable about this experience was watching her create these characters that were solely in my mind and make them visible for everyone else to see. Syn is absolutely delicious on this cover and she nailed Furi – which was drawn, or has she calls it ‘a Frankenstein’. I love that you won’t see my guys on anyone else’s books. These were not picked from the shallow male model bin on Shutterstock. It was a relief working with such talent. Although, I’ve now been ordered to call her ‘goddess’ since I asked for countless favors upon favors. Small price to pay.

2. The development of my characters. Mmmmm. Yummy. Some may already know this, but I don’t use any models for my book characters. I love coming up with my men within my mind. Everything from their look to their mannerisms. You won’t find God, or Angel, or Hawk, or Furi in any magazine or on a photo site. If I had to choose. I would have to say my favorite character couple is: God and Day. Turning them into 100% badass-don’t-give-a-damn-I’ma’-say-what-I want characters has been the highlight of all my writings so far. Day is able to say all the inappropriate-off-the-top-of-his-head comments that probably most men wish they could say and get away with. I wanted to make a highly ranked law enforcement character that was hilariously-witty, out, proud gay that wasn’t constantly harassed on his job, and hiding in the closet. Hence, Day. Who was the harasser not the harrassee’. Ro attempted it in the beginning, but he was usually the one that ended up red-faced after a tiff with Day. It was so much fun…it’s still fun writing those guys. Now I get to introduce more of God and Day’s team, while giving the book humor, because you know they are going to be in it.

1. Now, I hope I don’t get into any trouble with my number one. Not only my most memorable and favorite of all, but also the most FUN of making not only Nothing Special and Embracing His Syn, but ALL of my books.

PORN!!!!!

*laughing and winking* Hear me out, MM fans. A large percentage of MM writers are heterosexual females, so it’s important for us to make sure those scenes are spot-on, and realistic. Positions and execution. (I sound real scientific, don’t I? LOL). Honestly, the same way we have to research occupations, and backdrops, or landscapes, we have to research the sex for our books as well. The more sex you have in the book…the more you have to research…..right? So, I have to watch a ton of it, oh and various sites too! Uh. Yeah, that’s what I’m going with.

(And how freakin cool is this? I heard through the MM female writer’s grapevine, that we can write off all our porn subscriptions as a tax deduction, because we use it for our occupation. Hmmm. My porn is tax deductible. My entire family has used the same accountant for many years, and so have I, since I was nineteen. Mentioning my new deduction should be fun when I meet with him this tax season, and I slap a whole phone-book-sized receipt book of gay porn on his desk.)

Well, this had been fun. I’ve enjoyed chatting with you all and being embarrassingly honest. I hope you will pick up my latest release Embracing His Syn, which has been receiving rave reviews! I think it’s a must read if you love sexy detectives and lots of action mixed with extremely hot gay lovemaking. After you’ve done that, pick up my first novel, Blue Moon: Too Good to Be True, or if you’ve already read it….reread it, because Blue Moon 2: This is Reality is coming up next and its coming up fast!

Talk to you soon,

Thank you so much Blogger Girls for hosting me and my guys again!!!!

Loves,

Adrienne

About Embracing His Syn

Embracing His Syn(This story contains characters from previously published novel ‘Nothing Special‘ but Embracing His Syn is a stand-alone novel.)

Sergeant Corbin ‘Syn’ Sydney transferred from the Philadelphia Police Department as soon as he’d heard there was going to be an opening on Lieutenant Cashel Godfrey and Lieutenant Leonidis Day’s Atlanta Narcotics Task Force. Syn’s primary goal in his life has been to be a great cop. There has been no time for relationships, romance, or especially love.

Syn was dedicated to his new force, focused and ready to back up God and Day as their third in command, but what he wasn’t ready for was the feelings he got from seeing the love they had for each other.

Syn’s all prepared to accept his lonely fate until he walks into a small pub and meets long-haired, tattooed, bartender, Furious Barkley. Before he can even understand why, Syn’s feeling things he barely recognizes: passion, yearning, cravings; and if the dark, lustful gazes are anything to go by, Furious might be feeling the same things for him.

Just one thing needs to happen before Furi and Syn can give each other what’s been missing from their lives for so long…

Syn needs to allow happiness into his world and Furi needs to learn to open his heart and trust again.

God, Day, Ronowski, and Johnson are still as entertaining as ever…

You’ll swoon over God’s massive take-charge attitude…

You’ll laugh hysterically at Day’s never-ending wit…

You’ll fall in love with Furious’ mysterious, sexy demeanor…

and…

You’ll embrace Syn…

Disclaimer: This book DOES NOT contain scenes of polygamous sexual pairings.

An Excerpt from Embracing His Syn

Furi stepped in closer to him and Syn fought his reflex to take a step back. Furi grabbed his wrist and moved him quickly through the customers waiting for the bathrooms and pushed open the back door that led to the parking lot.

Syn quickly took in his surroundings before focusing back on Furi.

“What’s wrong, why’d you bring me back here?”

“What’s your angle, Detective? Why are you lingering around my job and offering me rides, huh?” Furi forced those questions through gritted teeth.

“Why are you angry? It’s just a ride. I was trying to be nice,” Syn said with little conviction, while avoiding answering Furi’s questions. He didn’t have an angle and he wasn’t sure why he was drawn to him. He just wanted to be around this guy, if for nothing else then to at least be friends.

Furi narrowed his eyes again and stepped into Syn’s space. “Are you gay, Detective?”

There it was. The million-dollar question. Was he gay? He’d never asked himself that. He’d only slept with women before, but had never felt anything more for them than an easy friends-with-benefits involvement. Rhodes was the only person that he’d ever felt a connection with. A man. Syn felt his mouth move, but no sound was coming out. Fuck.

Furi looked at him skeptically. “Uh huh. Just like I thought. Who are you working for? Him. He send you? Did he hire you to find me? Are you a private detective?”

That accusation cut through Syn’s speechlessness. “Whoa. I work for the city of Atlanta. What are you talking about? Who is him? Is someone after you?” Syn didn’t realize he’d grabbed Furi’s shoulders, forcing him to look into his eyes until Furi threw his arms up and dislodged Syn’s grip.

“Take your goddamn hands off of me! I’m sick of people thinking they can put their fucking hands on me! Stay the fuck away from me, Detective.” Furi shoved past him and reached for the door.

Syn jumped in front of it before Furi could get it open. He yelled right back at Furi, “My name is Syn! I’m not here as a Detective! I don’t know who him is, nor do I work for him.” Syn put up air quotes for the word him. “I just wanted to talk to you!”

“About what?” Furi yelled. They were in each other’s faces, chest bumping each other.

“I don’t fucking know! About you. About me. About the damn Falcons’ game last week. About the weather. About why there’s so many goddamn reality TV shows. About what-the-hell-ever! That’s what people do when they want to get to know someone!” Syn stepped back and gripped his hair blowing out a long frustrated breath. He felt so ridiculous, was so annoyed that he was seconds away from just walking away. “Fuck! I didn’t think dating was this damn hard.”

“That’s what you’re trying to do, Detective? Date me?” Furi’s tone and facial expression were full of skepticism. “Because I don’t want to date. Dating is stupid. What the hell is dating anyway? Some long drawn out process of elimination where you both present your best side while hiding the real you, and you can only keep that charade going for about three months because your bullshit and lies eventually leak out and then you have to spend the next three months getting to know each other for real.”

“Geez, man, you are insanely cynical. Do you always over-analyze everything? Why can’t we just–”

Furi cut him off, “Because. I’m only interested in gay men. Not men that might or might not be gay, or men that are looking for an experiment, or men that are fucked up in the head. I’ve been there. Done that, I’m never going there again. It almost cost me my li–”

Syn turned at Furi’s words. He walked back to him slowly. He could see pain in Furi’s eyes and Syn wanted to take it all away. Take all the hurt this man had experienced, and put it on himself, because he could handle it. All he wanted was to see Furi smile, see him uninhibited, full of passion. Full of him. Syn just barely held in his groan. He wanted this damn man. God help him, he did. He let out a slow calming breath and brought his hands up to cup Furi’s cheeks. He wanted to kiss him. Taste him. Feel Furi moan his name into his mouth and swallow it down. Fuck, he wanted that and so much more. Furi was looking hard at him, waiting. His eyes roamed Syn’s face before settling on his lips. Syn needed this; all he had to do was take it. Take it goddamnit.

Furi took it for him. Syn felt confident, sure hands on his own cheeks and soft, beautiful lips against his. Furi took Syn’s control. He knocked his hands down and grabbed the material of his jean jacket, pushing him up against the wall right there behind the pub, and then those lush lips were on him again. Taking him. Syn’s eyes were rolling behind his closed lids. Fuck, it felt so good. He could’ve never imagined how good.

Honorary Blogger JP Kenwood: To Swear Or Not To Swear: Profanity and Dialogue in Historical Fiction + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

To Swear Or Not To Swear: Profanity and Dialogue in Historical Fiction

by JP Kenwood

I have been asked about (and criticized for) my deliberate choice to use a more modern dialogue style peppered with colorful curses for my current m/m historical fantasy series set in ancient Rome. Here’s the thing. Romans in the second century AD did not speak Elizabethan or Victorian English. They spoke Latin, a complex and beautiful language characterized by precise syntax, a rich vocabulary and practical directness. Latin emerged as an identifiable language around 1000 BCE in central Italy, a fertile region inhabited by a stratified, patriarchal society dominated by farmers and soldiers. In fact, many aristocratic Roman names derive from this agricultural heritage: Cicero (‘chick-pea’), Lentulus (‘lentil’) and Fabius (‘bean’).

Have you ever heard Latin spoken outside of some televised papal blessing on the steps of St. Peter’s in Rome? Unless you spend much time attending the most traditional of Roman Catholic masses, the answer is probably not. If you’re interested in hearing Classical Latin spoken, here’s a link to a short clip from the documentary, “The Destiny of Rome,” wherein Marcus Antonius speaks before the Senate: http://youtu.be/6_IPqniaZR0. The performer’s Latin pronunciation is crisp, direct and powerful. It’s actually rather sexy. However, that said, we don’t know exactly how ancient Romans spoke Latin. As with deciphering much about the past, scholars argue theories and make educated guesses. But they all agree that ancient Romans did not sound like characters out of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” Sorry, Brutus.

But I’m off on a tangent. I chose to use a more modern tone for the dialogue in Dominus because I wanted these characters to sound not only direct and ‘Roman-like’ but also real. Not anachronistic, to be sure, but human. Familiar. In my own experience, readers of stories set in historical times become distracted or frustrated with wording that is forced to sound ‘historical’ with dialogue that is often clunky, obtuse, or flat out incomprehensible. I wrote my fictional Roman characters to sound as if they were actual people—which, to me, they are.

But what about all that swearing in your dialogue, Kenwood? Ah, yes—the fucks and shits and arses and cocks and tits. Here’s the deal. Romans swore. They swore a lot. You won’t find much profanity in the literary writings of Virgil or Tacitus (the latter fellow is a character in the Dominus series, by the way), but you will find delightfully bawdy language in the poems of Catullus and Martial and in the graffiti scrawled on walls throughout archaeological sites such as Pompeii. Just Google ‘obscene graffiti Pompeii’ and you will find a slew of sites with all the salacious details. In fact, the expression, ‘Speaking with Roman plainness,’ refers to the bluntness of the Latin language and the preponderance of obscenities. Romans didn’t beat around the proverbially bush. So Gaius Fabius (our bisexual MC in the series) swears, for shit’s sake. And, because humanity is nothing if not diverse, Gaius swears more than other characters, including his peers. He has a filthy mouth, the arrogant bastard.

One final note: my characters, especially the Roman characters, use English (as in England English) cadence and slang terms. For this I have no excuse except that for me, all Romans sound like the BBC Romans I grew up watching on the telly. Blame it on Clau—Clau—Claudius.

About Dominus

DominusIn AD 107, after a grueling campaign against Rome’s fierce enemy, the kingdom of Dacia, Gaius Fabius returns home in triumph. With the bloody battles over, the commander of the Lucky IV Legion now craves life’s simple pleasures: leisurely soaks in fragrant baths, over-flowing cups of wine, and a long holiday at his seaside villa to savor his pleasure slaves. On a whim, he purchases a spirited young Dacian captive and unwittingly sparks a fresh outbreak of the Dacian war; an intimate struggle between two sworn enemies with love and honor at stake.

Allerix survived the wars against Rome, but now he is a sex slave rather than a victor. Worse, the handsome general who led the destruction of his people now commands his body. When escape appears impossible, Alle struggles to find a way to preserve his dignity and exact vengeance upon the hated Romans. Revenge will be his, that is, if he doesn’t lose his heart to his lusty Roman master.

Dominus is a plot-packed erotic m/m fantasy that transports readers back to ancient Rome during the reign of the Emperor Trajan (98-117). This is the first book in an alternate history series—a tumultuous journey filled with forbidden love, humor, sex, friendship, political intrigue, deception and murder.

The second book—tentatively titled, “The Lion of the Lucky Fourth”—follows our auburn-haired bastard of a protagonist, Gaius Fabius, and his gaggle of clients and pleasure slaves as they travel to Rome for love, laughs, and vengeance. GRL Blog Tour: Lissa Kasey/Sam Kadence – Surviving GRL as an Introvert + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Surviving GRL as an Introvert

By Lissa Kasey/Sam Kadence

GRL is an event for people to meet, talk, and connect. The thought of which makes me want to stay home and read. LOL. I’m an introvert. And for all those extroverts out there, that means it takes a lot of energy to stay focused on anyone talking to me. It sort of makes me sleepy when someone is just going on and on. Not that it’s not interesting. It’s just I’m internal instead of external.

I’ve been to a few events this year. And it’s my first year being out there as two people: Lissa Kasey and Sam Kadence. I write both adult and YA, but since I skipped all events last year, this is the first time I’ve had to learn to sign two names. (It’s harder than you think!) I did Rainbow con this year which was small but had some great events for YA writers, so that helped. I also went to the DSP workshop which was bigger and a little more intense. I don’t mingle well, and sorry to any I may have offended with my awkwardness—sorry PD Singer.

This will be my third GRL. The first was the best so far, because it was small. I got to talk to people, there were events that I could do and not have to talk to anyone, and the hotel was easy to navigate so if I needed me time—which happens often—I could escape. The second year was a little bigger and harder for me to meet new people. I stuck with my group and avoided being social, but I was also going through other things that most of my followers already know about.

Didn’t attend last year so I’m pretty nervous about this year. Unlike most I don’t have a social anxiety disorder. I have a general anxiety disorder so everything makes me nervous. Not just people. My introversion just makes recharging after socializing harder. I know there are a lot of others out there like me. Folks who are social awkward, introverts, with a brain that runs away with them, and I can honestly say fun will still be had.

I’ve met some of the most amazing people at these conventions and some of my best writing pals. I shy away from the more outspoken folks because they have large crowds that exhaust me even from a distance, but I will still say hello and probably something stupid—this is an almost certain fact for the weekend. I’d love to talk with anyone about YA writing, Sci-fi, fantasy, or urban fantasy as there just isn’t enough in our genre.

You’ll probably find me hiding with people I know who started their journey the same time I did like Piper Vaughn, Poppy Dennison, or Xara X. Xanakas. I’ve made new friends among bloggers and writers who don’t mind being seen with me I think, and most of which I’ve met through online and GRL events. I always look forward to meeting others even when I stick my foot in my mouth.

For those who need time away but want to still feel like you’re part of the group, feel free to come sit with me and we can watch the rest in silence. No need to converse. A short recharge is better than none, right?

About Hidden Gem by Lissa Kasey

Hidden Gem by Lissa Kasey eBookMisaki “Aki” Itou is a psi—a person with mutated DNA granting him psychic abilities. He’s also a contracted companion—a whore. It may not be the perfect profession, but having a roof over his head, food to eat, and not being subjected to torture is a dream come true. He is the top companion at the Hidden Gem, and it makes him enough money to buy the prettiest, most sparkly shoes he can find.

Shane McNaughton is an Irishman who survived the Third World War and works as a cop. Head of Missing Persons, he’s good at finding people, but after the plague of the Third mutated his DNA, he has a hard time letting anyone see the monster inside. He’s been paying for Aki’s services for two years, both the psi and the sexual kind, but he wants more from the companion.

Shane needs Aki’s ability to see into another person’s past to track down a serial killer murdering the children of rich and powerful men, but the more they work together, the clearer it becomes that they are linked through a darker past than either of them realizes.

Hidden Gem is now available for pre-order on Dreamspinner Press.

About Sam Kadence

Sam Kadence has always dreamed about being someone else, somewhere else. With very little musical talent, Sam decided the only way to make those dreams come true was to try everything from cosplay at the local anime conventions to writing novels about pretending to run away to become a musician.

Sam has a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing, sells textbooks for a living, enjoys taking photographs of Asian Ball Joint Dolls to tell more stories, and has eclectic taste in music from J-pop to rock and country. All of which finds its way into the books eventually.

Honorary Blogger Joy Lynn Fielding: Don’t Mind Me – I’m Just the Writer + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Don’t Mind Me – I’m Just the Writer

by Joy Lynn Fielding

A year ago, I was asked if there were any genres I wouldn’t write.  I opened my mouth to say “Paranormal”, but before the words escaped, I thought better of it.  I didn’t want to hold myself hostage to fortune even though I knew I’d never write paranormal.

So how is it that, a year later, I’m five books into a paranormal series?  All I know is that I was in the shower one day and this shifter pack came to life in my head.  I wasn’t even thinking about shifters, just musing on the fact I needed to buy more shower gel before too much longer, and there they were – most of them fully formed, and each with a story to tell.

The Elk Ridge pack has turned out to be a rowdy, demanding bunch.  I suspect part of that is generic to shifters, as one of the things that Dave notes in Riding the Whirlwind is how shifters tend to buy into a macho culture.  His theory is that it’s because the territorial nature in their wolves is never far from the surface.  I agree with him, but would also add in the whole alpha concept, with its veneration of power.  As well as being rowdy and assertive, this lot also love the limelight.  I’ll be writing another character’s story and, before I know it, half of them have turned up in cameo appearances.

I mentioned that they’re demanding – Riding the Whirlwind is a direct result of that. When I started the series, I didn’t intend to write this book. I knew roughly what happened between Christian and Dave in their trip to New Mexico and thought I could cover it in a few lines in the last book. Big mistake. Christian was adamant that if everyone else was getting their own book, he needed one too.

Despite getting his own way, the stubborn cuss proved to be my most difficult character to date to write. I think it’s because he and I are so different in temperament – he’s short-tempered, aggressive, and confrontational. But no matter how much I wanted to wring his neck at times, he was right – he and Dave did need to tell their story. Had I stuck with my original plan of summarising the contents of the book in a few lines, they wouldn’t have reached the same emotional outcome they do when we actually see them go through the events. I also discovered things about them I didn’t know before I started it, like Christian’s less than flattering views on Canadian whiskey and quite how deep Dave’s mystical beliefs go.

Don’t tell any of them I said this, but it seems that sometimes the characters do know best!

About Riding the Whirlwind

Riding the Whirlwind (Strength of the Pack, #5)Five years undone in just five days.

Dave Mitchell and Christian Taylor are on a mission from their alpha—to discover what happened to a pack of Argent shifters thirteen years ago. Away from their pack and out of their usual routine, they find underlying tensions in their relationship coming to the surface.

When their investigation leads them to the resident pack, Christian seeks respite from his demons by throwing himself eagerly into the cage-fighting ring the pack runs. He knows Dave hates him to fight, but he also knows Dave will understand. Dave always understands.

But when Dave meets a kindred spirit among the pack members, all Christian’s certainties come crashing down around him. It becomes clear that their relationship might not survive this. And when things between them reach crisis point and the local pack gets involved, it may prove to be the death of more than just their relationship.

Honorary Blogger Chris T. Kat: How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books – Exclusive Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me back! Dreamspinner Press will publish my new release, Secret Energy, on August 29th. Secret Energy is a shape-shifter story, and the sequel to Secret Chemistry.

To date, Secret Energy is the longest book I’ve ever written. It’s also the one I’ve re-written multiple times. I knew the editing process would be long and exhausting but that’s okay, some books are like that. But… then I received an e-mail informing me about the start of the editing process on Secret Energy. So far, so good. Then, I received another e-mail, informing me about the start of the editing process on Tidal Change. In that very moment, I succumbed to a light panic attack.

Now, how did I keep my sanity?

  • Told my husband about it, while trying not to hyperventilate. I received an amused smile, and he said, “I guess you won’t be bored then.” I reciprocated with a death glare, which gained me a massage later that night. 😉
  • Bought some new books to read, so I wouldn’t think about the upcoming edits. Because pretending the edits won’t magically appear in my inbox is always so realistic, right? Anyway, I got loads of awesome books.
  • I wrote another book, hoping if I lost myself in that world, the edits wouldn’t show up in my inbox. Naturally that wasn’t the case but hey, I got lots of writing done while I waited on my edits.
  • The main reason why I kept my sanity was my editor Erika Orrick. She knew very well I might be overwhelmed with the editing of both books, so she staggered them. I was never without work for more than a few days but it was do-able. So there, an awesome editor is worth a lot!

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed by work? Push through or try to hide? Eat chocolate or go for a run? I’m curious to learn more about your strategies!

About Secret Energy

Secret Energy (Shifters, #2)When wolf shifter Robin agreed to cover for his older brother Tim and Tim’s lover Jay, he never imagined feeling so stifled. Tim’s overprotective attitude suffocates him. Pressure from within—the urge to find his own mate—mounts daily. With a little help from Jay, Robin finally convinces Tim to let him go for a run alone, but he has no inkling that his life will change forever as a result.

Unexpectedly, he finds his mate Peter Brannigan, an old and special soul, and the one shifter who can bring balance to Robin’s life. The new couple spend days together, developing their bond as mates. Yet even as they explore and cement their relationship, crisis looms just ahead when an old enemy of the pack shows up and kills someone Robin loves.

An Excerpt from Secret Energy

Robin held his breath as he waited for Tim’s reaction. He scooted closer to the bear, and the bear sat down behind him, resting his heavy head on Robin’s left shoulder.

Tim shifted so fast that Robin recoiled. He pressed his bare back against the bear’s massive bulk, savoring the soft touch of fur on his skin. A wave of need rolled through him, rushing from his head to his crotch, pooling there. Robin covered his hardening erection as inconspicuously as possible.

“No,” Tim stated in a low voice. “No, he’s not. He’s a bear.”

Robin kept his eyes averted as he answered, “I think he’s a were-bear.”

Someone giggled, and Robin redirected his gaze toward Jay and Tim. Jay had shifted to his human form and lay on his side, trembling and white-faced. He was also the one emitting the giggling sounds, even though he tried his best to stifle them. Robin’s lips twitched into a smile.

Tim stepped over Jay and knelt next to him. The protective gesture wasn’t lost on Robin.

“Stop giggling. What’s so funny here?” Tim muttered.

“A were-bear. It rhymes.”

Confusion showed on Tim’s face as he said, “Great. So my brother is a poet and an idiot.”

“Hey!” Robin bristled.

The bear moved behind him, sliding even closer. Robin pushed back a little, relieved at feeling his mate’s presence. He still didn’t understand why the bear didn’t talk to him, but the silent support helped, more than it probably should given that he didn’t know anything about his mate, not even his name.

“I don’t believe he’s your mate,” Tim said.

“Why not?”

“He’s a bear.”

“A were-bear,” Jay corrected.

Robin caught Tim throwing an irritated glance at Jay. As quickly as it appeared, the glance disappeared because Jay was trailing his fingertips up and down Tim’s right forearm, calming him.

“He’s not going to mate a bear, nor is he going to mate a were-bear.”

“That’s not your decision to make,” Robin shot back hotly.

“You’re my little brother. Of course I’m making the decision.”

Stunned silence settled around them for a moment. The bear huffed and lifted his head from Robin’s shoulder. Robin immediately grabbed for the bear’s neck to pull him back. Jay coughed harshly, drawing Tim’s attention to him. Behind Tim’s back he gestured toward Robin’s crotch.

Gulping, Robin adjusted his legs so his half-hard cock was hidden from view. He mouthed ‘thank you’ to Jay. The bear sniffed, his head lowering until he came close to Robin’s erection.

“Uh, no sniffing there now,” Robin whispered. When the bear didn’t react, Robin added a desperate “Please.”

The bear moved his head away, though he swiped his tongue over Robin’s nipples as he did so. Robin groaned, closed his eyes, and pressed back into the wooly fur. Blood pulsed in his cock, filling it.

“Do that again,” he demanded.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tim yelled.

Robin’s eyes flew open. Shit! Just for a few seconds, he’d forgotten where he was and, more importantly, who was there.

“I-I…,” Robin stuttered. His cheeks burned.

“Stop this crap and come over here!” Tim shouted, the anger contorting his face.

“You stop this damn awful big-brother show,” Jay interrupted.

Tim swiveled his head around to look at Jay. “What?”

“Robin found his mate, and we won’t act like jerks and tear them apart. I’m not happy about being injured, but Robin’s right, I shouldn’t have attacked right away.”

“But—”

“Tim, you fought for me even though I’m a hybrid. Why is it so difficult for you to accept Robin’s mate isn’t a pure werewolf either?” Jay asked so softly Robin had to strain his ears to hear him.

“He doesn’t resemble a wolf in the slightest!”

Jay shrugged. “Neither do I.”

“Yes, you do, and anyway, that’s beside the point.”

“Is it? Why?”

“Because….” Tim tucked a stray strand of Jay’s chestnut hair behind his right ear before he bent over to kiss Jay tenderly. When he straightened up again, he said, “You should shift back. The earth is moist around here, and you’re already freezing.”

“I will if you promise to stop being such a prick.”

The bear snorted, and Robin coughed. When Tim glared at them, Robin whispered, “Shh, don’t set him off again.”

The bear rubbed his head against Robin’s face, eliciting a contented sigh from Robin. He felt safe with the bear surrounding him. His mate would protect him no matter what, Robin was certain of that.

“Robin?” Jay called out. “Go with your mate.”

“What? No! I have a say in where he goes—”

“Shut up, Tim,” Jay responded. He accompanied his response with an exaggerated eye roll, causing Robin to chuckle.

“Jay! He’s my baby brother, and I—”

“You will act like the great big brother you are and let him go with his mate. We can’t change the fact his mate isn’t a pure werewolf, Tim. Your parents are working hard on installing new laws and changing people’s perspectives. They’ll find a solution,” Jay said, although his voice didn’t hold much conviction.

Honorary Blogger Rory Ni Coileain: Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShares Series – Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShare Series

by Rory Ni Coileain

First, I’ve been a die-hard fantasy and science fiction addict for at least the last 40 years. I’ve read so many different “takes” on the Fae, the Sidhe, the Celtic supernatural in general that it’s hard for me to pin down any “traditional” lore to compare my writing to. Put another way, I have an incredibly rich and varied traditional palette to choose my colors from, but I’m not exactly sure where any individual color came from!

And there wasn’t any moment at which I sat down with my Muse and said “Okay, here’s what we have to choose from, which way are we taking this? Oh, and would you mind putting some trousers on, at least until we finish hashing this out? You’re quite distracting.” My Fae are at the same time completely out of my own imagination/my Muse’s dictation, and the product of those 40 years of gorging myself on everything from The Tragedy of the Children of Lir to Charles de Lint.

That being said, I’d say the strongest similarities between my work and traditional lore are in the personalities and nature of the Fae. A Fae in his or her own world, which they call the Realm, is pretty much completely self-absorbed, except for an inborn love for and loyalty to blood kin. The Realm and the human world were separated more than two thousand years ago, but Fae still have fond memories of the days when they could mess with handsome and beautiful humans at will. They’re capricious, unpredictable, pleasure-loving, and essentially immortal – they heal quickly from any wound that isn’t mortal by nature, but given that the only art form anywhere near as popular as sex is vendetta, there are a fair number of mortal-type wounds keeping the population down.

The biggest difference between my writing and traditional Fae lore (apart from the fact that my Fae don’t have wings – but they do have really cool faceted irises, like genstones) is probably the nature and workings of magick in my world. In my Evil Day Job, I’m a lawyer and an editor, which means I need my details to work, dammit. And since magick is at the core of my storyline, I needed a magickal system that clicked. (That’s not to say I have everything plotted out to a ‘t’, mind you – unfortunately, I keep getting lovely inspirations that really should have at least been foreshadowed two or three books ago. Someday I’ll rewrite…) My Fae don’t “cast spells” – they channel magick, sometimes in ways that are natural to them because of the Demesne to which they belong (Earth, Fire, Water, Air), and sometimes with the help of a learned channeling (similar to a spell). Magick is a living force, and while it follows certain natural laws, one gets the impression that it does so grudgingly, and occasionally just goes off and does whatever the hell it wants to. It pervades everything in the Realm, living and non-living alike. And living magick has a source, the energy that runs through ley lines. Think of it like gasoline and crude oil (if I ever come up with a more eco-friendly explanation, I’ll let you know).  Ley energy is the raw form of magickal energy; once it’s been processed (which occurs naturally in the Realm, and in the bodies of individual Fae under the right circumstances), it becomes living magick, and can sustain life and fuel channelings. (Oh, and then there’s elemental magick, which is a separate force that can be used by some Fae (the Noble families) and which basically forms a very few Fae (the Royals are essentially elementals. Fun times.) The problem in my world is that thousands of years ago, in order to save the Realm from destruction by the Marfach, an evil entity that devours and warps and corrupts living magick, the Fae were forced to seal off the Realm from the human world – and the ley energy is an indivisible part of the human world. So ever since the Sundering, the Realm and all its inhabitants have been living on their stored magick, with no access to the ley energy. And by the time the SoulShares series starts, this is beginning to cause problems.

About Hard As Stone

16097830Tiernan Guaire is a Fae in exile. Forced from the Realm into the human world for the unimaginable crime of a brother’s murder, he lives by a century-old vow, to trust no one, and never to allow himself to love or be loved.

Kevin Almstead has just lost his future, to a vote of the partners at his law firm. Trying to escape for an evening, he ventures into Purgatory, the hottest all-male nightclub in Washington, D.C., where he allows himself to be seduced by a stranger with long blond hair and ice-blue eyes.

Drawn into a Soulshare bond with his intended one-night stand, Tiernan soon learns that the most ancient and evil enemy of the Fae still walks the human world, and it will stop at nothing – certainly not Kevin Almstead – to possess the magick of a Noble Fae.

Tiernan stirred, muttered under his breath, the first signs of distress he’d shown since falling asleep. Passing out. Whatever. Kevin sighed, resting a hand lightly on the blond’s smooth chest; in short order, he found himself running his fingertips lightly over his lover’s chest, tracing the lines of the muscles, and then down, a fingertip traveling along the intricate tattoo over his hip. Tiernan wasn’t buff, not like some men were and Kevin himself tried to be. Lean, hard-bodied, almost impossibly fit. And with that long, unruly blond hair, and his crystalline blue eyes, Tiernan would turn heads in rooms full of men or women. And no doubt had.

Mine.

The Fae rolled onto his side, away from Kevin; chuckling softly, Kevin settled himself behind his lover, glancing over the shoulder in front of him at the bedside clock. He could still get almost three hours of sleep if he was lucky. He wrapped an arm around Tiernan, nuzzled into the curve where neck met shoulder, breathed in the scent of wild hair and sated male body and honey, and closed his eyes. So this is what magic smells like.

About Gale Force

1Conall Dary is the most powerful mage born to the Fae race since the Realm was parted from the human world, over two thousand years ago. But that very power condemns him to a lifetime of celibacy, because sex calls to power, and he has power enough to drain a world. When he refuses to use his talents for a Noble lady’s petty revenge, he finds himself shanghaied to the human world, his soul torn in half and his magick blocked.

Josh LaFontaine is the beautifully inked owner of Raging Art-On, a Washington, D.C. tattoo and piercing parlor. While taking part in New York City’s Pride march with a former lover’s dance company, his world changes forever when the man of his dreams materializes out of nowhere at his feet. Josh’s sensual and loving touch, the first Conall has ever known, may be enough to give him back the magick he’s lost. But before they can complete their Soulshare, a terrible accident leaves Conall bodiless, lost, and invisible, to everyone except – maybe – the human with whom he shares a soul. But Josh will need to find him before the ancient evil of the Marfach does or everything they have – and more – will be lost.

An Excerpt from Gale Force

The sense of relief as he got out of the taxi was like nothing he’d ever felt before, and even knowing most of it wasn’t his own didn’t make it any less overwhelming. Only the presence of the foot traffic in and out of Purgatory kept him from falling to his knees in gratitude, maybe doing some pavement-kissing.

Well, that and a sense of haste only slightly less urgent than a cattle prod. He fumbled the keys off the hook at his belt and unlocked the deadbolt, then keyed in the combination on the touchpad, wincing as the tiny crystalline tones tried to pierce his eardrums.

Are you sure you can do this, lanan? There might be another way. Just let me think, now that I can.

Josh shook his head. Letting himself into the small client lounge in the front, he locked the door behind himself and made straight for the tattoo studio. “No time. Every minute you’re disembodied makes it less likely you’ll ever get back, you said so yourself. And me…” He paused, his hand on the doorknob of his studio. “I’m not sure how much longer I can stand this.”

About Deep Plunge

iFor the last six hundred years or so, the only things reminding Lochlann Doran he’s a Fae have been his faceted aquamarine eyes and the fact that he can’t die. He’s been a wanderer for so long in the human world – over two thousand years – that he’s lost his magick, including the gift of healing that goes along with being a Fae of the Demesne of Water. Finding his SoulShare might get it back for him. But it might kill him, too.

Garrett Templar has been living on borrowed time, in a sense, since he was eighteen, when one of the johns he entertained to pay the bills while he danced at Purgatory infected him with HIV. It was always supposed to be a “manageable” disease, though, at least until a cure was found. Except he’s just found out that the virus in his system has inexplicably mutated into full-blown AIDS, and no known drug cocktail can even slow it down.

And when Lochlann and Garrett find each other at last, on Purgatory’s dance floor, the only thing as urgent as their need for one another is the hunger of an ancient evil to do whatever is necessary to possess Lochlann’s magick…

Shit. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag, ready to swing it — or ditch it, if it looked like that would help him escape . And for one sick, sweaty, gut-wrenching moment, he was ten years old again, hearing the kids closing in behind him, knowing there was no way in hell he was going to get away without another split lip, ruined shirt, blackened eye. Almost hearing his mother’s voice again. Garrett Lee Templar, I swear, you find more trouble than any ten other boys ever dreamed of. Do you think I can just make new clothes appear out of thin air?

“Garrett?”

He recognized that voice from somewhere. Slowly, he turned. And stared up into eyes that gleamed blue even in the crappy light from the streetlight on the corner.

“Lochlann?” He hadn’t had to rent his ass out for a while now, but the idea of a john following him home from the club still made his skin crawl. Yet there was something about those eyes, something different.

No. Fuck that shit. You get hurt the worst when you let yourself hope.

About Firestorm

Firestorm (SoulShares, #4)Rian Sheridan is a foundling, a Northern Irish Catholic corner boy whose world was destroyed in fire, and reborn the same way, beside an Orangemen’s bonfire last July the Twelfth. A consuming, dimly-remembered pain in his past calls to him, taunting him, daring him to find it and lose himself to it in the S&M underground of Belfast.

Cuinn an Dearmad is the last surviving Fae Loremaster, and he’s just seen the beginning of the death of the Realm, the haven of the Fae race. The only hope of stopping it starts with him finding the Prince Royal of Fire he stole from the cradle, and lost in the human world, many years ago. He has a few guesses about where that hope ends, and he doesn’t like any of them.

Rian and Cuinn are an impossible pairing, two SoulShared Fae. Any two Fae will strike sparks, but these two Fae are a conflagration. Unable to stand one another, yet drawn into an escalating series of sexual collisions, their passion will either save a world or destroy it.

Available at: Ravenous Romance, Amazon and Barnes & Noble

An Excerpt from Firestorm

He gave up on trying to sleep, rolling onto his back and lying sprawled out in the great bed fit for a king. Or a Prince. Shite. He didn’t want to be a fecking Royal. Whatever that meant. But if there was one thing he could say he’d learned in life, it was that what he wanted had fuck all to do with what happened to him.

Though ever since the Twalf, last summer, there was one thing he nearly always got, when he wanted it. The thrill. They’d thought to break him that night, and perhaps they had, but after the breaking he’d been made anew. Into a man who craved what the bastards sought to shame him with, and who used them, in the end, more cruelly than they had used him. After all, he could use them, and others like them, any time he liked.

Addicted? Hell, no. Victorious.blogger_bee_trans

About Rory Ni Coileain

Rory Ni Coileain majored in creative writing, back when Respectable Colleges didn’t offer such a major, so she designed it herself – being careful to ensure that she never had to take a class before nine in the morning or take a Hemingway survey course. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the age of nineteen, sent off her first short story to an anthology being assembled by an author she idolized, got shot down in flames, and found other things to do, such as nightclub singing, for the next thirty years or so, until her stories started whispering to her. Now she’s a lawyer, a legal editor, a sopraltenor in her church choir, the mother of a budding video game designer, and amanuensis to a host of fantastic creatures who are all anxious to tell their stories, and sometimes even wait their turns.

You can find out more about Rory on her Facebook or check out the SoulShares Facebook page.
