An Excerpt from Hush

by Jude Sierra

Wren looks… different. His eyes are wide in what seems almost like surprise. His lips, darker than Cam’s ever seen them, tremble. Cam doesn’t need any of Wren’s abilities to catch that Wren is overwhelmed. The only thing Cam knows how to offer is what he himself would want.

“Kiss me?” he asks.

Beautifully, Wren doesn’t resist. His clothes are rough against Cam’s skin all those zippers are so cold where Cam radiates heat. When Wren drapes himself on top of Cam, his body is heavier than Cam had imagined. Wren kisses Cam softly, seeking something, and Cam wants to believe it’s from a feeling of closeness, something sweet like the gratitude he feels right now. He cannot believe he just did that—that he let Wren do that. Hulled and shaking, Cam lets his hands wander because even after that perfect storm of pleasure, there is an itch under his skin for more.

Suit Yourself by Susan Mac Nicol: Excerpt & Giveaway!

SYS Tour Banner Blogs OK

Excerpt from Suit Yourself

by Susan Mac Nicol

Oliver’s arrived home horny and needs to relieve the tension…

The film, titled The War Whore, started and Oliver wondered if he was a narcissist watching his own movie. However, he wanted to see Adam in action, imagine it was Leslie above him, see those cobalt blue eyes staring into his as he fucked him. His cock rose and Oliver sighed in satisfaction as his hands got busy. There was something to be said about living alone and having the privacy to jack off in your own living room using the lube that was scattered around the place.

Through lazy eyes, he watched himself lying on a medieval divan, dressed in an opened leather waistcoat, chest hair showing. He remembered that those pants had been the most uncomfortable leather ones he’d ever worn. They were opened to show his cock upright and purpled, already glistening and definitely ready for the slave who stood in front of him. Adam smiled invitingly on screen and dropped his tunic to reveal an impressive dick and a slim, muscled body. He also had a backside that you could bounce coins off. The man’s arse had been bite-worthy, and Oliver’s mouth filled with saliva as he imagined what Leslie’s would be like. From what he’d seen today, the man had a tight, bubble arse and Oliver really wanted in.

Languid strokes to his cock made his pulse race; his mouth opened and his heavy breaths echoed in the room. He watched the events playing out on screen, as Adam straddled him and then rammed down on his cock with a fierce battle cry and began to bounce up and down like a yo-yo. Oliver closed his eyes and imagined that scene, but with Leslie in the slave role. Black bangs over blue eyes framed a face that was pale and delicate, yet with the strength of a man’s jaw and square cheekbones that made no mistake about the gender of the person currently riding Oliver’s cock.

About Suit Yourself

1Scarred both physically and emotionally after a motorcycle accident, twenty-five year old ex fashion model and porn star Oliver Brown is about to be stripped bare by flamboyant twink Leslie Scott—and they’ll rebuild love from the bottom up.

BARING THE BEAST

Twenty-five year old Oliver Brown is addicted. Two years ago, he was at the height of his career as “Nikki Star,” fashion model, porn actor, partier without peer. Then came the accident. Hiding his scars, both emotional and physical, he’s gone into hiding. But fine clothing is some solace. A new suit by Debussy? Better even than a ride on his motorcycle Hulk or all the things he used to give and take on camera.

Enter Leslie Scott, the flamboyant, dark-haired, heel-and-tiny-short-wearing twink sent to deliver Oliver’s newest fix. A firecracker, Leslie is dapper, generous, in touch with his feminine side but all man, and as gorgeous as any garment ever made. He makes Oliver dream of ending his reclusion, of recapturing a future forever denied him. But for that to happen, Leslie would have to strip him to the bone. Only then will they rebuild life from the bottom up.

About Susan Mac Nicol

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason.  She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.

Honorary Blogger Elizabeth Coldwell: The Setting For Steal Your Soul Away + Excerpt & Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Setting For Steal Your Soul Away

by Elizabeth Coldwell

If you’ve ever been to Brighton, you’ll quickly come to realise it’s a fantastic setting for an erotic story. For those non-UK readers who are unfamiliar with the city, it’s on the south coast of England, has a buzzing, slightly Bohemian vibe and is particularly tolerant of alternative lifestyles and sexualities.

As it’s become home to a lot of creative and media types like artists, writers and musicians, it’s become known as London-on-Sea. It has some great bars and clubs, and the warren of little streets known as the Lanes, close to the sea front, are home to quirky shops selling antiques, vintage clothing and all manner of knick-knacks. It’s also famous for its beach, which is composed of pebbles rather the sand (so don’t forget to take your flip-flops if you fancy a paddle in the sea!) and has a section reserved purely for naturists. All of this helps to make Brighton the perfect home for a vampire wanting to forge a new identity and take a job which fits in with her need to live a nocturnal lifestyle.

Angelique, the heroine of Steal Your Soul Away, my contribution to the Wild After Dark anthology, has been a vampire since the time of the French Revolution – indeed, she was the only member of her family to survive when their home was attacked by the revolutionary mob. What she didn’t realise was that the man who rescued her and spirited her away to England was actually a vampire. Having been turned by him, she’s spent the last 200 years reinventing herself, and moving from town to town to avoid anyone realising she never ages. Brighton is the city that keeps calling her back, and by the time the story begins, she’s working as a burlesque dancer.

It’s a job she loves, and one that helps her meet two very hot but very different men. Tom is human, a talented sculptor whose works are about to form the centrepiece of an exhibition at the Brighton Pavilion as part of a ‘Cities after Dark’ exhibition. (This event was partially inspired by the various annual ‘After Dark’ arts events that take place in galleries and museums in cities including London, New York and Amsterdam). Lucas is Tom’s best friend. But unbeknown to Tom, he’s really a werewolf. And that’s not the only thing he’s hiding…

Angelique quickly becomes aware of Lucas’ true nature. But even though werewolves are her sworn enemy, she can’t deny her attraction to Lucas. She and Tom have embarked on a hot and heavy affair but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want Lucas, too. With so many secrets to be revealed, and the erotic tension between all three of them rising, what will happen when events come to a head at the Pavilion on the night of Tom’s big exhibition?

About Wild After Dark Anthology

wildafterdark_800Beyond the Poison Chalice by Helena Maeve

Coveting the enemy is simply to die for.

Claudia Salizar has given blood, sweat and tears to the tenuous armistice between the factions that inhabit St. Louis. She rules the north side with an iron fist, striving to keep the peace between vampires, werewolves and humans no matter the cost. Stumbling across two mysterious intruders who may jeopardize everything she’s worked for is no small inconvenience.

Steal Your Soul Away by Elizabeth Coldwell

In Brighton, the undead come alive when the sun goes down. Can a vampire and a werewolf put their differences aside and enjoy the ultimate threesome?

Angelique is not like other burlesque dancers—she’s been a vampire for over two hundred years. She meets hot, young sculptor Tom, and his friend, Lucas, a lycan. Desire and distrust mix in an explosive combination as Angelique is drawn closer to both.

Taken in by Wendi Zwaduk

Find what you need at the Store Front. Blood, sex…we have it all just for you.

The Supernaturals have taken over the earth, leaving the humans to serve them. The Store Front is one place for the Supernaturals to find partners for feeding and sexual needs. Vic, a wolf shifter, and Gale, a vampire, have a special human female they love to visit.

Intervention by Aurelia T. Evans

It starts as an intervention for a friend. It ends in bloodshed, lust, betrayal and death, as love often does after dark.

When Emily’s husband, Land, calls her to come down to the warehouse district at sunset, she thinks it’s just another job for their para-extermination company. However, he tells her that he’s finally caught Matt, the third member of their team, who was bitten by a werewolf a few weeks ago.

Darker Nights by Nan Comargue

Lawyer Delia Darker’s world becomes very dark when two new clients turn out to be immortal vampires – and her long-time fantasy.

Delia Darker works at her family’s law firm serving vampires and other immortals. She’s suddenly thrown into the nighttime world of music, partying and incredible sex. How can she resist spending the night with Mark Lyons and Caleb Jennings?

Sated by Lucy Felthouse

A human, a vampire and a werewolf walked into a bar. Sexy is what happens next.

Since getting together with her vampire boyfriend, Ace, Aneesa is enjoying a sex life she could never have with a human. Aneesa is checking things off her sexual bucket list at a rate of knots. So when Ace proposes a threesome with his werewolf friend, Barton, Aneesa’s definitely up for it.

An Excerpt from Wild After Dark

Here’s an excerpt that will help to give a flavour of the love/hate relationship Angelique and Lucas find themselves in:

He drew himself to his full, intimidating height. “And what gives you the right to judge anyone, when you flash your tits to earn a living?”

“As though you have a problem with that, lycan.” She couldn’t say why, but being up so close to Lucas and engaging in this battle of wills with him aroused her. She breathed in his feral musk, and fought the desire to run her hands over her own breasts. “I know what I’ll find if I put my hand here—” As she spoke, she rested her palm on the front of his trousers. Just as she’d expected, he was hard, his cock so thick she knew she would struggle to wrap her fingers around it. The thought of being filled with something so big had her pussy growing wet.

“Don’t tease me, you gorgeous vampire slut,” Lucas murmured, his voice thick with lust. He spun her round, so her back was to the wood-panelled wall. As he moved, the moon came out fully from behind a cloud, bathing Lucas in her light.

Angelique could only describe his reaction as one of mania. He tugged at the bow tie around his neck and let it drop to the floor. Then he pulled off his tuxedo, and started unbuttoning his shirt.

“Lucas, what are you doing? You can’t—”

He cut her off with a snarl. “Don’t you see I have no choice? It’s the moon, and being so close to you… Fuck, Angelique.”

Honorary Blogger Bey Deckard: Novelettes, or How I Learned to Love the Short Form + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Novelettes, or
How I learned to Love the Short Form

by Bey Deckard

When I first started writing, I jumped straight into the novel form. Caged wound up being over 120k words, which makes it a hefty enough read… and that’s after I cut out a whole bunch. Then, I had a dream about two Space Marines and decided to write it out to see if I had any future in Science Fiction—that was the first chapter of Sarge. Folks enjoyed it and wanted more, so I set myself some writing hurdles, one of which was: can I write a reasonably well fleshed-out story in less than 20k words?

See, I might be new to writing fiction, but I wrote research papers for years: substantial works in history, art history, anthropology, philosophy, art theory, psychology, and Shakespearean language/ interpretation. Huge, weighty papers that had pages of endnotes (or loads of footnotes depending on the prof). I excelled in writing long papers—any time I had to do short abstracts, I floundered. How could you say everything in such tight constraints? I managed to do it, but never really warmed to the short form.

Fast-forward to last year while I was writing Sarge. Instead of seeing the short form as something limiting, I decided to make it a challenge. A fun challenge… Hey, I’m not doing this for a degree or a grade, right? Writing is fun for me.

But… how to write something that conveys what the characters are feeling, and how incredibly powerful the relationship is between them, without breaking the (word) bank? It’s not easy, that’s for sure. For every thousand words I wrote in both Sarge and Murphy, I kept maybe a hundred. The result is something that is incredibly distilled. And you know what? I loved writing it. There’s something incredibly satisfying about paring down sentences and cutting the fat out, and I think sci-fi lends itself well to the style.

Did I succeed what I set out to do? I think so, judging from the reactions to Sarge and Murphy. And that makes me happy.

Will I write more about them? Definitely. In the meantime, fans of Sarge and Murphy should stay tuned and look out for a special print version (coming June) that includes both novelettes, some art, plus what I’ve called “The Missing Reel”.

About Murphy

1Sometimes when it seems like it’s too late, the right person comes along and opens your eyes…

Murphy is the continuing story of a D/s relationship between two Space Marines who found each other in the midst of hopelessness and misfortune.

Sarge and his newly minted squad travel across the galaxy on a top-secret mission that could help win the war. However, to Murphy something about the mission stinks, and it’s not just the planet they’ve landed on

Honorary Blogger Michelle Moore and Reesa Herberth: About the Authors + Deleted Scene & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

About the Authors

by Michelle Moore and Reesa Herberth

Hi, we’re Michelle Moore and Reesa Herberth.  The kind people here have invited us to stop by and tell you a little about our newest book, Peripheral People.  A standalone novel in the Ylendrian Empire series, Peripheral People combines elements of romance, science fiction, paranormal, and crime drama in the intense, galaxy-spanning hunt for a psychic serial killer.  Hot on the trail and hot for each other (in the sense that they’d both prefer to be set on fire than work together), the imperial agents who stumble into the case must evade terrifying mental traps, their own volatile relationship, and the discovery that someone in a higher pay grade may not be so keen on their quest for justice.

We’re thrilled to be with you today, and we’re looking forward to any questions or comments you might have.

  1. What’s a typical day like for you?

I wake up around 6:45, then hit the snooze button until the munchkin cat alarm starts going off. (Usually this alarm involves some variation of a seven pound cat dancing on my bladder because I haven’t fed her yet.) Feed the monsters (five of them, anyway), then head off to the Day Job, where I pretend to be a frightfully competent office manager.  Then home, more feeding of the beasties (I’m beginning to understand why they’re fat…), whatever assorted family members are about for dinner that night, and a little down time before I pack up and head off to the Writing Office, wherever it may be located that day- coffee shop, studio, or the desk in my room.  I write and attend to writerly business for a few hours almost every night.  If I reach a goal and there’s time left, I’ll catch up on something recorded before I roust the cats off my bed and reclaim it.

  1. If you could only keep one book for the rest of your life, which book would it be?

This answer might change tomorrow, but I think it would be The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle.  Aside from being an achingly beautiful fairy tale composed of perfect words, it’s filled with so much wisdom about life.  About the quest for self, and home, and sacrifice, and what it means to make a difference in the world- everything, really.  It’s an amazing book that changes me every time I read it.

  1. Which is the biggest time-waster: Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, or something else?

Oh man, it’s twitter, all the way.  (I’m @reesah, btw.)  I love the conversations on twitter.  It’s somewhere comfortably nestled between an echo chamber and the cesspit of most comment sections. Plus, I can fit a LOT of absurdity into 140 characters.

  1. Are there any deleted scenes from your book? (BTW, deleted scenes make great book tour posts!)

Why yes, yes there are! We totally scrapped the first four chapters of the book at one point, but here’s a tiny bit from them that I still like to imagine is canon.  Westley Tavera, our psychic cop, and Gavin Hale, his partner, report for duty on the ship they’ll be living on for their next duty cycle.  Parts of this scene did eventually make it into the book in a much-altered form.

“Gavilicious, you’re in my way.”  West tapped his friend on the back of the leg with his shoe, struggling under the weight of his duffle.  Of course, if Gavin had agreed to carry it, it wouldn’t seem so heavy, but he didn’t see that happening any time soon.  Gavin got sensitive about “contributions to the partnership” when West tried to get him to carry things, and he wasn’t up for the pointed looks at the moment.

“If you hadn’t packed half a ton of crap, it wouldn’t be so heavy.”  Gavin set down his own neatly packed bag, almost managing not to look smug.  “Housing would have crated up all that stuff and had it delivered before we leave, you know.”

“No way.  There’s important stuff in here, man!  Very important Reader-type things that no one can touch without contamination.”

Gavin’s eyebrows climbed well above his dark glasses.  “Like your stuffed hedgehog and your “Most Valuable Psychic” mug?”

West shifted his attention to the expanse of empty tarmac behind Gavin.  “Maaaaaybe.”

“I’ve told you a million times, nobody wants to steal your stuff,” Gavin’s air of familiar tolerance was a welcome balm, much like his silent mind and the quick, calming hand he put on West’s shoulder.

“You don’t know that,” West said, patting the top of his duffel protectively.  “I’m famous, Gav.  I could turn my back for a second, and “poof”, all my worldly possessions could be up for sale on some auction site!”

Gavin let go of his shoulder, shoving him a little.  “I think you’ve confused “famous” with “self-important”.  Common mistake.  For you, I mean.”

About Peripheral People

PeripheralPeople_400x600Corwin Menivie and Nika Santivan are decorated veterans of the Imperial Enforcement Coalition, and are perfectly capable of solving cases the old-fashioned way. When they’re paired with Westley Tavera and Gavin Hale, the most powerful Reader/Ground team to emerge from the Psionics Academy, it could either be the best thing that’s ever happened to crime fighting, or the makings of a quadruple homicide.

During a routine investigation, West’s talent puts them on the trail of a brutal serial killer who traps his prey in a deadly mental playground. Then the killer starts baiting the team, laying psychic landmines at crime scenes and exposing IEC secrets. The strain of the case binds the agents closer together—so close that Nika and Gavin start sharing a room, and even the curmudgeonly Corwin finds himself as occupied with West as he is with the murders.

But as West’s visions of death grow more violent, the only way out for all of them may be straight through the mind of a monster. If they’re not careful, they may forget which side of the hunt they’re on.

About the Authors

Reesa Herberth was born in Nevada and spirited away to California before moving to Hawaii, where she grew up on the Big Island.  She tried Arizona for a few years, then lit out for the D.C. area, where her nomadic itch is regularly curbed by the nightmares of urban traffic.  She’s held a handful of the requisite crazy writer jobs, including book store overlord, office goddess for an artisan ice cream maker, and cheese-cup scrubber at an organic goat dairy.

Michelle Moore has a well-documented obsession with travel, television, frappuccinos and flamingos. These, however, come in a distant second to her love of writing. Most evenings she can be found huddled over her laptop at the local Starbucks, dividing her time between actually writing and pretending to be a barista.

Michelle and Reesa have been writing together for over fifteen years.  They are currently working on more Ylendrian stories, and a petition to have cat hair recognized as a form of currency.

A Counselor Among Wolves by Liv Olteano: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from A Counselor Among Wolves

by Liv Olteano

I walked back into my bedroom still rubbing my hair dry, the towel hanging almost haphazardly around my hips. And as I entered, I froze. My bed wasn’t as I’d left it. It was radically different, in fact. Weiss, wearing only sweatpants, lay back against the headboard and was merrily watching TV—in my bed. Okay, technically it was his, but right now it was mine.

“What the hell?” I muttered.

He spared me a glance, running his gaze over me from head to toe and back up again. “Nice entrance.”

I put my hands on my hips. “What the fuck are you doing?” I asked, exasperated.

“Watching TV,” he said in a general “duuh” tone.

“I mean, why are you watching it in my bed?”

He yawned and stretched his legs, making his muscles bunch and relax again in a mesmerizing way. “Easiest way to make sure you’ll smell of me. You’ll sleep in that T-shirt,” he said, inclining his head toward the lump of fabric resting at the foot of the bed. “Your pillow and sheets will smell of me too, so you’ll smell right in the morning.”

And they’d smell of him while I’d sleep in them. The bastard… how was I supposed to sleep like that?

“Want to coordinate our stories about how we spent the night together too?” I asked acidly.

He snorted. “I’m a goddamn PBI agent, Edel. Trust me, I’ve got it covered,” he said, smugly pressing some buttons on the remote.

To my endless horror, some porn started playing instead of the game he was watching. Weiss fumbled with the remote and changed channels, but it was too late. I’d already heard some shameless moaning, and it was giving me a rise—especially considering the half-naked Weiss sitting on my bed. God, how his abs flexed with his every move. The hard ridges of his muscles almost choked me, despite trying to look at anything else. And the hair on his chest, going down into a happy trail that was lost under his sweat—

I hung my head in utter defeat and despair. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

He cleared his throat. “The porn wasn’t part of the plan.”

Good to know. “How did you get in, anyway? I’m pretty sure I locked the door,” I snapped.

He held up a hand. “See that over there?” he said, pointing to an open door. “Communicates between our bedrooms.”

I was shocked I hadn’t noticed it before. Close to losing my patience, I took a deep breath and stared at him. “Is it just me, or are you getting off on this?”

He looked down at his sweats, where there was some response, I realized, looking down on it with him. Then he looked back up at me and grinned. “I’m funny like that,” he said.

Okay… okay. I’d had it. “What are you playing at, Weiss?” I asked, feeling defeated.

He lifted his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“You’re in my bed wearing only sweats after you just groped and molested me down in the living room. Are you sure we’re both clear on the fact we’ll just pretend to be together? Because it looks to me like you’re taking this whole thing a bit too… seriously.”

Big mistake. He got up, giving me a full show of how his abs flexed and how his body looked in motion from up close. So much wank material gathering, my brain was short-circuiting.

He sat at the edge of the bed, resting his hands on his knees. “As long as we’re having this heart-to-heart, I think there are some things you should know. You might want to sit down.”

I sat in the chair beside me, careful not to have stuff hanging out of the towel or flashing him. “Go on.”

He sighed. “I’m not exactly sure how to behave.”

“Picked up on that.”

He growled and looked up into my eyes. “I mean, with you, in this situation.”

“Neither do I,” I said as kindly as I could. “I hope you understand this is… new to me too.”

“I doubt going out with someone is new to you.”

“You’d be surprised,” I muttered under my breath. “I mean, pretending to go out with someone is a first for me too.”

“I guess I am used to pretending.”

I frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Never mind. I do cross lines, even on my best days. This hasn’t been one of them. I feel like an ass.”

“You are an ass,” I quipped.

He growled again and glared at me.

“Sorry,” I placated. “Why feel that way?”

“Where’s the line between pretending convincingly enough and actually going out together?”

I scratched my chin. “I guess meaning it makes the difference.”

“Yeah, but when we were making out downstairs… I meant it. Does it mean that when we were kissing, we were pretending very convincingly, or that it was real?”

Timothy Sands is a PBI counselor, half-fey, half-elf, with a secret crush on Herman Weiss, PBI director. As a new chapter is added to the Leader Murders, it is Weiss’s responsibility to investigate what seems an impossible-to-solve case. The other problem? Weiss is suffering from rages, and his only salvation lies in Tim’s emotional-grid-balancing skills. They only have to pretend to be a couple for Tim to use his talents, and he owes Weiss a big favor. Piece of cake, right?

The fey might be involved in the Leader Murders. Someone on the Council might be their ally, and another prominent PBI figure looks more and more suspicious as they investigate. The stakes are upped when Timothy’s father, the Fey King, threatens to leave the Council destitute if they don’t hand Timothy over to him. Weiss’s brilliant solution? Mating Timothy and forcing the Council into protecting him.

There’s only one small hitch in that plan: instead of protecting one, the Council might decide to get rid of two.

She believes stories are the best kind of magic there is. And life would be horrible without magic. Her hobbies include losing herself in the minds and souls of characters, giving up countless nights of sleep to get to know said characters, and trying to introduce them to the world. Sometimes they appreciate her efforts. The process would probably go quicker if they’d bring her a cup of coffee now and then when stopping by. Characters—what can you do, right?

Liv has a penchant for quirky stories and is a reverent lover of diversity. She can be found loitering around the Internet at odd hours and being generally awkward and goofy at all times.

Go Your Own Way by Zane Riley: Excerpt & Giveaway!

Excerpt from Go Your Own Way

by Zane Riley

“Where are we going?”

Lennox gazed out the windshield at the jagged horizon. It was getting late and this pit stop-turned-detour seemed more like a summer road trip. A bizarre urge to chase the July dusk seemed to have come over his grandfather. For the last hour, the Appalachian Mountains had begun to crest in front of the sun’s deep orange rays. The sun was all but gone now and the landscape around them was hidden in the darkness. He and Grandpa weren’t headed in the right direction. Home was the other way. It couldn’t be an accident: His grandfather always had a reason for everything he did.

“At your age, you should have east and west figured out by now.” Lennox plucked at his seatbelt. “Come on, Grandpa. What gives?”

Cameron McAvoy glanced at Lennox. His grandfather was a thin man with hair the color of dirty snow. He had frown lines around his eyes and mouth and a mole sprouting gray hairs where his jaw and neck met. On the rare days when he saw his grandfather, Lennox was fond of telling him he looked like a conservative politician past his prime.

“I’m taking you home.”

It was the same answer Lennox had heard since Vienna, and Lennox didn’t believe him for eleven reasons, each of which was an enormous road sign that didn’t list Richmond within the next eighty miles.

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Meet the Lobster Cove Residents

by Carol Lynne

When I start a new series, I always begin with a list of characters. In my newest Lobster Cove series, I have an entire town of characters to create. Although I add to the list as I go, I thought I’d share with you a few of my initial cast of characters for this series. I use this list to keep them straight in my head. The one character I will leave as a mystery is my lighthouse keeper because his story needs to evolve slowly. I will warn you, I’m copying this from my private list, so forget about grammar or punctuation.

Lobster Cove Characters:

Joseph Allenbrand: 44 yrs old. Oversees a shelter for gay runaways. Bright blue eyes, black hair threaded with silver. Heads the new Rainbow Youth Center in Lobster Cove. The new shelter has room for 40 young men plus an apartment for Carl and Bev Walters.

Cullen “Little Man” Bryant –Moves to Lobster Cove from Cattle Valley to help oversee the town’s reconstruction and work with his partner, Joseph Allenbrand, to establish the new youth center.

Mick Hennessey: Asa hires Mick as chief of police. Brought up from New York, City after a shooting left him ready to get out of the city. Dark brown closely cropped hair, 36 yrs old, 6’2, built, bi-sexual.

Boone Jensen: Medium brown hair, shaggy. Hazel eyes with flecks of green, brown and gold. Stonemason and brick layer who moved to LC from Gary, Indiana. 29 yrs old, 6’2, muscular build from years of lifting rocks and working hard. Takes care of his younger brother, Laddy, after his mother’s death two months earlier. Decided the move to Lobster Cove would be good for both him and his brother.

Landon “Laddy” Jensen: 17 yr old with Down syndrome, Boone’s brother, brown closely-cropped hair.

Ava Hughs: Waitress and manager at Fiducia although she has a Master’s degree in business She’s Dante’s best friend and has sworn off men forever. 5’5, curvy, long blonde hair that she wears up in a knot most of the time, hazel eyes. Foster sister to Dante. They’ve known each other for 19 yrs.

Dante Madia: 35 yrs old, black shoulder length hair that he ties back when cooking. Brown eyes. Owns Fiducia (Trust in Italian) small exclusive restaurant with only room for thirty guests at a time. 35 yrs old, 6’1, shoulder-length black hair, dark brown eyes, medium build with toned and muscular body.

Jonah Briggs: owns his own lobster boat, runs a crew of three men, grew up in nearby Rockland Maine. Dark brown shaggy hair, brown eyes, 34 but looks older because of sun and wind damage while on the boat.

Isaac Diaz – Fire chief, 36 yrs old, short black hair, tall 6’2, muscular. Worked construction in the town in the early days of LC. Lives next door to Dante. Has a female Dalmatian named Ember that goes with him to the station when he’s on duty.

Alexander Stewart “Zander becomes known as Lexie” – 16, transgender teen from shelter, was locked in basement by his parents after he came out. Waist length dark brown hair.

Jake Skimmerhorn – 31 yrs old, dark brown hair, brown eyes, 6’, muscular, full beard, reclusive lighthouse keeper.

Well, that’s a partial list of the new characters you’ll meet in Lobster Cove. I hope your interest has been peaked in this new series, and I very much look forward to writing their stories.

An Excerpt from Welcome to Lobster Cove

Boone spun his beer bottle in an attempt to keep his eyes off Dante. Since their kiss in the kitchen, he’d thought of little else but getting Dante alone again.

“What about you, Boone?” Cullen asked.

“What do I need in town to make my life easier?” Boone reiterated the question in case he’d zoned out during a new topic.

“Yeah,” Cullen replied. “For Isaac it’s a bigger grocery store. Ava’s in dire need of a salon, and Laddy thinks a water park would be nice.”

Boone slid his gaze to his brother. “A water park? Seriously, Laddy?”

Laddy smiled. “We already have candy,” he stated as if a huge pool with slides and sprayers was a natural next step for the town.

Boone glanced at the people seated at the long table. “I’m not high maintenance, so I can make do with what’s available as long as there’s enough work to keep me employed.” He gestured to the men he’d met that evening. “I know this is going to sound corny as hell, but as long as I have friends and Laddy, I’m good.”

“I couldn’t have said it better,” Joseph Allenbrand chimed in.

Boone still couldn’t believe that Joseph used to be a Catholic priest, but, according to Joseph, he’d fallen in love with a parishioner and had decided to rescue homeless gay youths. That had led to an entire conversation about why the Rainbow Youth Center had left Washington, DC. Evidently, the bad situation in DC combined with Cattle Valley running out of room had prompted Asa to buy the bankrupt town of Lobster Cove. Before he’d received Nate’s call, Boone didn’t even know you could buy a town. Joseph had explained that Asa had bought the majority of the buildings from the bank, but there were quite a few houses that he’d purchased from the original owners once they’d learned who’d be moving into their neighborhood.

Mick stood then rested his hand on Dante’s shoulder. “Anything I can help with before I get out of here?”

Boone tried to keep his jealousy in check. Mick had flirted with every man at the party. Hell, he’d even flirted with Ava, so it must’ve been part of the police chief’s personality.

Dante answered Mick while staring directly at Boone. “Thanks, but we’ve got it.”

Boone’s cock began to harden at the heated expression on Dante’s face. As much as he loved Laddy, he suddenly wished he could spend the entire night getting to know Dante on an intimate level. Unfortunately, he’d have to settle for the PG13 evening Dante had offered.

Honorary Blogger Kate Sherwood: Gender Segregation: True Equality? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Gender Segregation: True Equality?

by Kate Sherwood

One of my favourite things about writing is the ability to play “what if”. For Sacrati, I got to play it a lot! I tried to start with a real-world situation, and then extended it a little. For the Torian society, I took the idea of a Spartan-style civilization, with their commitment to war, and took it even further. What if the men in the culture never lived with the women? What if they stayed in the barracks all the time?

Well, there’d need to be some contact, obviously. Babies have to come from somewhere. But, really, a few nights a year should take care of that, right?

One of the things that would probably happen with that level of gender segregation would be a lot of homosexual contact, which, for an m/m novel, is not a bad thing! But what else would happen?

Theos, one of my main characters, explains the system:

“The women stay in the city because they’re safe there. We need them, as many as possible, and we need them to be healthy. One man can have many children in a year; we don’t need as many men. So men go to war and keep the valleys safe, and women stay in the cities where they’re protected. They take care of business, and they build things and raise children.” Theos raised an eyebrow. “What’s so unnatural about that?”

At first I worried that I was reducing the women to being baby-machines. It felt oppressive to have them controlled by their biology. But then I realized that the women actually had a lot more freedom than the men in this society. The men had to be soldiers. If they weren’t fit for that, they weren’t fit to be citizens. The women, though? They could be blacksmiths or healers or farmers or potters or weavers or just about anything else.

It was interesting to imagine the possibilities. True equality? No, not really. But it was an interesting direction for my “what if” game to take!

Have you ever taken part in a formally gender-segregated activity? Private school, “women only” retreat, “men only” club… anything? If you did, how was it different or the same as a mixed-gender activity? Would you want to do it again? If you’ve never taken part in something like this, would you be interested in trying it?

About Sacrati

Sacrati_400x600As an elite Sacrati fighter in the mighty Torian military, Theos is blessed with a city full of women who want to bear his children, and a barracks full of men proud to fight at his side and share his bed. He has everything he needs—until he captures Finnvid on a raid.

Finnvid is on a secret mission to prevent the Torian invasion of his homeland Elkat. Being enslaved by Torian soldiers wasn’t in his plans. Neither is his horrified fascination with the casual promiscuity of the Sacrati warriors. Men should not lie with other men—and he should not be so intrigued when they do. He definitely should not be most intrigued by the leader of the soldiers who captured him and plan to invade his home.

For Theos, everything would have been easier if the infuriating, lying, bewildering Elkati had never come into his life, but he can’t stay away. When betrayal and treachery threaten both their nations, they must work together to stop a war that could destroy their homes forever—even as they begin to question everything they’re fighting for.

About Kate Sherwood

Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”–other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy–the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.
