Character Interview with Simon & Alex from Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp by Jeff Adams + Giveaway!

Blogger_Character_Interview copy

I’m thrilled to be here at Blogger Girls today! I hope everyone takes a moment to say hello in the comments. I’ll stop back over periodically during the next couple days to answer any questions that may come up (you may even want to play along with today’s post and ask a question of Simon or Alex). One lucky commenter will get a free ebook: you’ll have the choice of either Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp or, in case you’re new to Hat Trick, you can opt to receive the original Hat Trick novel to start at the beginning.

I liked the idea of doing a character interview for this stop on the tour. In the original Hat Trick, each of the chapters opened with a brief article detailing how the Central High Falcons hockey team was doing week-to-week. In that book, Simon and Alex also worked with a reporter from the school paper, Mike, as their coming out became news throughout the school.

So, for this post, Mike, who is going to school at Penn State, interviews Simon and Alex for a profile in their hometown newspaper. This interview takes place shortly after the events in Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp and glimpses just a touch at Hat Trick 3, which comes out this summer and focuses on Simon and Alex’s senior year at University of Michigan. Don’t worry, I’m not giving up any major spoilers here but there is reference to a number of events across the entire Hat Trick series.

Senior year is getting ready to start for you guys and another big season of Wolverines hockey, except this time you’re coming into the season as co-captains. How does that change things for you?

Simon: It was a great honor to be put into the position, especially both of us together. It’s not unheard of to have co-captains, but it hasn’t happened in a while and not while we’ve been on the team. It means we have to work harder, not only to put our best game on the ice, but to help motivate and support the team.

Alex: Like Simon said it’s an honor that our contributions are being recognized this way. Alex and I agreed when the captain talk started during the spring semester that we’d be fine if either of us got it. That we both get to wear “C” is pretty cool.

Did you expect to be at this point when you got your scholarships during your senior year at Central High?

Simon: No way. Simply to get the scholarship was the pinnacle then. It meant I’d go to a good college, and that I’d get to go with Alex. Plus there was a lot of other stuff going on senior year, too. It made freshman year almost seem like a break since I got to leave that behind. Looking back from here though, the past three years have been incredible on so many levels that I could’ve never conceived of when I left high school.

Alex: I wanted to come to Michigan to play and contribute to a great team. The three seasons have been great. And if I were to be honest, getting to play in the Great Lakes Invitational outdoors during our freshman year has been the highlight for me so far. Being named co-captain is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but there was something about that game that was magical, much like the County High game our senior year at Central.

You’ve both heavily involved in work-study and internship programs, how do you manage to keep the balance between schoolwork, the team and leaving time for your relationship?

Simon: It’s been a learning curve. When I started working at Ann Arbor’s LGBT Community Center as a sophomore it was part time, shadowing a mentor and interacting with some youth. By that summer I was working in an expanded capacity and learning so much that related to my social work studies. My duties there have steadily grown, but they are flexible with my team commitments. Alex and I feel this is all preparation for graduation next summer. Meanwhile, we do make the time to for each other, too, even if it’s just catching up at the end of the day before we crash.

Alex: No doubt we’re both busy, but it should lead to great opportunities when we graduate. We both love what we’re doing. I’m very lucky that EdgeTech allows me to maintain my school and hockey time and learn while learning some incredible things as part of the team there. And, Simon’s right, we always find the time for each other. We’re just as important as the other things we’re doing. I think we’ve learned well from having the demands on our time grow gradually over the years so we could adapt.

And this summer you managed to go and coach hockey at a summer camp. What was that like?

Simon: It was great. We’ve coached youth previously and enjoyed it, which is why we were excited for this opportunity. To go away to a camp like that where it’s really a mix of hockey and camping was great. Our Falcons’ teammate Leo got to come along, too, which made the whole trip even better. We were lucky that our regular jobs let us off to take make the trip. The trip also solidified even more for me that I’ve made the right career choice. Working with young people is difficult at times, but so rewarding when you know you’ve made a difference.

Alex: As much as I love engineering, those four weeks made me wish that I’d considered perusing a major where I’d be able to make coaching a career. It was very fulfilling. It definitely makes me want to coach a kids hockey team, just an after school team or something, after graduation once I figure out what regular working life has in store.

What would happen if you guys coached opposing teams?

Simon: So far we’ve always coached together. But it a head-to-head, my team would certainly crush his.

Alex: No way. Mine would come out on top.

Maybe it’s better we forget that I asked that question, or perhaps you guys should always coach together. Now that you’re back form camp, what’s in store for the rest of your summer?

Simon: Mostly work for the both of us. With the time away at camp, we both have to focus on that for the remained of summer. I know we’ll play some pickup hockey, too, with some of our teammates who are in the area for summer. Hockey practices will start up again in virtually no time, so we’ve got to stay in shape for that. It wouldn’t look good for the co-captains to come back out of shape.

Alex: Simon pretty much nailed it there. It’s primarily work for the next couple months with training camp starting up towards the end of that time. It doesn’t sound like much, but since Simon and I like what we do, it’ll be great.

Any messages for the Flacons as they prepare for a new season?

Simon: We’re expecting great things as always. Just missing out on another state championship last season was rough, but we’re sure the team is going to come back strong. Derek Stone rising up as captain is awesome. The Falcons that were seniors at the same time we were won’t be surprised about that. I haven’t seen Derek play in a couple years, but I expect he’s gotten stronger and for Coach Archer to put him in the captain’s position means he’s ready to go.

Alex: I wholeheartedly agree with what Simon said, so I’ll just give a loud and proud “GO FALCONS!”

Simon and Alex start up their fourth and final season with the University of Michigan Wolverines in October.

And if you want to find out how that fourth and final season goes, you’ll have to pick up Hat Trick 3: Penalty Shot when it comes out this summer. In the meantime, I hope you’ll either pick up Hat Trick if this series is new to you, or if you’ve been reading along pick up the latest Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp. Given the cold, wintry way it’s been so far this month, this could be a perfect summertime blast for you.

About Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp

HT_SummerCamp_400x600Simon and Alex, now between their junior and senior years at The University of Michigan, decide to put their jobs on hold for a month and take the opportunity to coach hockey at a summer camp for teenagers.

They’ve got a cabin full of good players to work with and the focus is to get them ready to win the camp championship. One camper, sixteen-year-old Dylan, requests extra help because he needs to get a scholarship and the guys make it their mission to help him succeed.

With their best friend Leo along for the trip, Simon and Alex are setup for a great time at camp, until another coach tries to seduce them. How they respond to the unwanted advances, while  balancing commitments to their campers, will test them both.

An Excerpt from Hat Trick Overtime: Summer Camp

“Simon, as many great summer trips as we’ve had, I think this might be the best one yet and it’s only just started,” Alex said right after he let go a contented sigh.

Alex and I went camping every summer. We’d spend at least a week at a campsite, as far into the woods and secluded as possible. Just us, a tent, and basic provisions. It was a blast. For our fourth summer trip, we mixed it up big time and so far I loved it. Neither of us went to summer camp as kids, but this year we decided to spend a month working at camp.

It was the end of the first day, and we were sitting on the steps leading up to our cabin. We were tucked in the woods near Muskegon, Michigan. The cool evening breeze, mixed with the wood smell of the cabins was perfect. It smelled like summer. Adding to the idyllic scene was sitting between Alex’s legs with my head resting against his chest. We looked out across the campground. Other counselors were hanging out in front of their cabins while the campers were in bed since it was past light’s out.

“You’re right,” I said, craning my head up to look at Alex. “Meeting the campers today was great. It’s gonna be awesome coaching for the next month.”

Back in March, we’d been approached by Carson Stilson, a wealthy Michigan alum, to coach at a new hockey camp he was starting. He transformed an abandoned arts camp into a hockey retreat with four half-sized rinks and one regulation one. Stilson invited college players to coach for camp’s inaugural year. It sounded like a great way to spend part of our summer, playing hockey and getting some sun. We jumped at the chance to do it.

While Alex and I had jobs, I was still at the Ann Arbor LGBT community center and Alex was at EdgeTech in Detroit, we managed to negotiate time away to come up here.

I gave a contented sigh as I snuggled in closer to Alex. It was early June, so it wasn’t super hot and there was a nice breeze blowing from the lake across the grounds. It made it very comfortable. The grounds were cool. There central area had six cabins for the campers and coaches arranged around a courtyard. Outside of that there were bathroom facilities and an administration building. There was also a boathouse, which I hadn’t been to you, down by the lake. The new buildings on the grounds were the rinks. I can’t imagine the investment to build the three buildings that housed the ice facilities. There were basic necessities in terms of locker rooms, but the ice was well kept. I’d played on much worse at private rinks over the years.

“Hey guys,” Leo said, coming towards us from the cabin next door. Recommending Leo as a coach had been easy for us. It was awesome we were going to hang out with him for a month. We hadn’t done that since we’d all gone away to college. “I forgot how much I hated going to sleep when I was a teenager. I thought we’d never get everyone settled down.”

I nodded. “We had slightly better luck. Maybe we just wore our guys out more.”

Leo stepped over me and sat down on the step above Alex so we could easily see each other while we talked.

“How are your guys?” Leo asked.

“We’ve got an interesting assortment of players,” Alex said. “We saw some that are really good, but others who need a lot of work. I like that it’s mixed though. It’ll make the concept of working as a team that much more important so the stronger players support the weaker ones.”

“I think it’ll challenge our coaching, too,” I said. “We’ve only worked with people of like skills before. Advancing players starting at different levels is going to be interesting. I’m glad we’ve got the daily coach’s check-in so we can all learn from each other.”

“I’m paired up with a guy who’s going to coach college hockey,” Leo said. “Kieran graduated a few weeks ago and got a gig as an assistant at Boston. I’m hoping to learn a lot from him.”

Alex kissed the top of my head as I absently ran my hand over his leg. I considered shifting positions, but then decided not too. Everyone knew we were a couple, and there was nothing even PG-13 in what we were doing.

“I was worried about using up our vacation for this,” Alex said, “but I’m already sure it was the right choice.”

“Me, too,” I said. “We’re out in the woods, and for longer than we would’ve been if we were on actual vacation. Plus you got to come along, too.” I held up my fist for Leo and he bumped it.

“It’s good for me too since Matt’s working in California for most of the month,” Leo said. “He’ll be back just before we head home.”

The cabin screen door opened slowly and out stepped Dylan, holding a hockey stick in one hand and his skates in the other looking like a deer caught in the headlights. Dylan was fifteen and a good skater, but he needed to work on his aim.

“What’s up, Dylan,” Alex asked. With Leo, Alex and me blocking the stairs, he couldn’t go easily around us.

“Uh,” he paused, obviously trying to decide what to tell us.

“Looks like you’re trying to break curfew,” I said matter-of-factly. “Since I doubt you’re going to the bathroom with skates and a stick.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it without speaking. He stared at us and we stared back, waiting for whatever he was going to say.

Honorary Blogger Shae Connor: Real-Life Meets Romance + Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Real-Life Romance

by Shae Connor

In the romance genre, one rule prevails over all others: the primary romantic relationship must have a happy ending. (There are quibbles around specifics, but for my purposes, let’s just stick with the basics.) The flavor of happy can vary widely, but the story must end with the characters together or it doesn’t qualify as a romance.

For traditional romance (which is to say, male/female romance), the target has long been a “happily ever after” (HEA) ending. In mainstream romance, that’s usually meant marriage and/or babies, although the definition has expanded over time to encompass happy endings without love declarations or long-term commitments.

In Unfortunate Son, the romantic arc isn’t the focus of the story. Yes, Evan and Riley develop a romantic (and sexual) relationship, and in the end, they’re together and pursuing that relationship. But the ending is far from a HEA. There are no grand declarations or major life events related to the relationships. If anything, at the end of the book, Evan and Riley are only at the beginning of their love story.

An ending like this one would best fit under a category that’s generally called a “happy for now” (HFN) ending. This label is applied to romances in which the relationship is still in its early stages, or the characters are at a point in their lives where lifetime commitments might not ring true. Young Adult romances are more likely to be HFN than HEA, for example. But the label fits almost any romance that doesn’t end with a long-term commitment.

For gay romance—for nearly all flavors of LGBT+ romance, in fact—stories that end in marriage (or engagements) are a relatively new development, even newer than the concept of gay love stories having happy endings at all. While a handful of states have allowed same-sex marriage for a decade or more, it’s only been within the past year that a wave of legalization for same-sex marriage has swept over the United States and many other parts of the world. I’ve watched, delighted, as dozens of same-sex couples I know (either personally or via online connections) have had their unions legalized, often many years after the participants had committed themselves to each other.

I think we’re starting to see a similar change occurring in gay romance. When I wrote my first novel four years ago, only six US states plus the District of Columbia allowed legal same-sex marriage. As I write this, that number stands at 36 (with several others on the cusp). It’s not really possible to overstate how much that means for the real-life couples who are now able to marry legally, but as a writer, it also means characters in stories set in all those states can now get engaged and married—just like the opposite-sex characters in “straight” romances have been able to do from the beginning. Publication schedules necessarily mean that it takes time for real-life developments to show up in fiction, but this seismic shift in real life will inevitably will be reflected in art.

For Evan and Riley, marriage is still off the table, in part because they live in Georgia, one of the few remaining states that does not allow legal same-sex marriage. But by the time they make it to the point in their relationship where marriage might be a consideration, they may well be able to take that legal step right at home. So while the ending to their story in Unfortunate Son may be only a HFN, it’s thrilling to know that their eventually HEA may extend all the way down the aisle.

About Unfortunate Son

_CoverArtUnfortunateSonFive years ago, Evan Day lost his lover in the Afghan sand, and in the fallout, he lost his military career and his family. With help from friends, he reinvented himself as porn star Trevor Hardball, but his scars are hidden, not healed. When Riley Yeats falls into Evan’s lap in a bar, he awakens a part of Evan he’d thought was dead and gone. Evan’s fascinated by the blond and twinky Riley, even though he’s the opposite of Evan’s usual type.

Then Evan’s family reappears his life, and Evan soon learns Riley has his own family-inflicted wounds—ones that make it hard for him to be there for Evan. A disastrous confrontation between Evan and his parents leaves Evan’s mother injured and Evan overcome by anger and fear. Losing his tenuous hold on his emotional control, Evan makes one bad decision after another, but maybe his final fall will be the wake-up call Evan needs to set things right—with his parents, and with Riley.

Wolf’s Sacrifice by Draven St. James: Exclusive Excerpt + Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive ExcerptAn Exclusive Excerpt from Wolf’s Sacrifice

“Where do you see yourself in the pack?” He studied Liam as the man’s brow furrowed.

“I don’t know yet. I guess I’ll sort it out in time.” Liam nibbled on his lip and then cast him a small smile that looked more dejected than happy.

“Is that why you left? Do you not feel at home here?”

Liam shook his head. “No, that isn’t it at all. Everyone… You’ve been very welcoming.”

Sean brushed his fingertips along the dark shadows under Liam’s eyes. “Then why aren’t you sleeping?”

Liam tilted his head into the touch. “I have nightmares.”

Sean’s heart clenched. What must it be like to have his only memories of sight be the atrocities he had been exposed to? To be locked in with those visuals and have none to supersede them?

“All quiet again,” Liam murmured.

Sean dropped his hand to the ground and blew out a sigh. “I hate what you went through and that some of those men are still out there.”

It doesn’t help that Sean’s wolf makes it damn clear it believes Liam belongs to him.

From the first deep breath of Sean Maddox’s intoxicating scent, all Liam wants to do is strip naked for the sexy beta and let the wolf claim him. Hiding away his desires seems like the best plan, given after a lifetime in captivity Liam is just learning what it means to be free. What does he know about being a mate? More to the point, would Sean even want him if he knew the truth?

As Sean and Liam struggle with their growing craving for each other an old enemy steps out of the shadows. With secrets lurking and fate twisting two worlds together a sacrifice must be made, but can the two mates live with the consequences?

Honorary Blogger Sid Love: Happiness Is Being Lost In A Book! + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Happiness Is Being Lost In A Book!

by Sid Love

Before being an author, I am a reader – an avid one. Books are my life! Even when my weekdays are spent with thirteen to fourteen hours at work, you’ll always find a book in my bag that I read while travelling. My one-way trip to work is usually about a couple of hours long! So plenty of time to read 😉

This is the only me time I get and dare anyone steal it from me!

I read almost all genres – ranging from Old Classics to Mystery to even Sci-Fi and Fantasy fictions. (I can never digest an auto-biography though. It gives me migraine, just looking at its cover!) But if you ever ask me, what genre would I prefer to read any day, any time – I’ll say it’s Romance.

No doubt!

imagesOLZUND91And my inspiration to write in this genre comes especially from the Classic Romance novels written by Jane Austen. She is like an idol I’d praise for eternity. Seriously! I like her works that much. I am ashamed to admit though that I took about a month to finish Pride and Prejudice (that one was the first I read from her) but initially I thought the long descriptive passages were boring indeed! It’s not for everyone, I tell you but by the end of the story you feel like you have read a novel that will stay in your memory forever! A novel that you’d re-read a million times!

So far I’ve read P&P, Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility more than twice. And Emma is my all-time favorite! It’s just something about the main character that draws me in. Her being so imperfect in itself makes her flawless – if that even makes sense. Ha!

These stories make me want to write that same epic romance with two men in the equation! I want my readers to experience the kind of goose bumps I get every time I think about the letter written by Captain Wentworth and his words – “You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever…”

I can never be as good as Ms. Austen; that I am well aware of. However, I can at least try to honor her through my stories.

My newest release Let It Go is just the beginning.

About Let It Go

let-it-go-cover2“Everyone tells me to stay away from him. But if only I knew how to resist him…”

Goa isn’t supposed to be on Damon O’Neil’s list of places to stay while working in India. It’s merely a substitute for his planned trip to visit his sister in Paris for Christmas and the New Year. His boss had other ideas. He’s sent Damon to carry out urgent upgrades to the company’s offshore units and Damon can’t say no.

When Damon encounters an extra-spicy curry, a handsome Indian guy named Virat comes to his rescue. Damon is instantly smitten with his looks, and especially with his cute smile. But Damon soon realizes he is very much out of his league when Virat introduces his new wife.

However, there might just be a chance Virat isn’t all he pretends to be …

Honorary Blogger Heidi Belleau & Rachel Haimowitz: Opposites Attract + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Opposites Attract

by Heidi Belleau and Rachel Haimowitz

Hi, and welcome to the Burnt Toast B&B blog tour! We’re Heidi Belleau and Rachel Haimowitz, the authors of the book, and we’re so thankful to have you along for the ride, and thankful to our hosts, The Blogger Girls, for having us here today!

Normally on a blog tour, we like to share all kinds of behind the scenes goodies to do with the book: inspiration images, glimpses into research and plotting, deleted scenes, conversations about our process, character bios, etc. For this tour, though, we’re doing something a little different, but we hope you’ll still find it worth your while.

When Heidi first pitched The Burnt Toast B&B, it was as an opposites-attract story centering around the world’s worst B&B . . . and an M/M romcom where one of the lead guys just happened to be transgender. Writing solo, she’d done a trans book before, but that was very much a Trans Book, all about exploring gender identity, defining who you are, and coming out to your friends and loved ones. This book . . . isn’t that. It’s the story of an optimistic hipster stuntman and a pessimistic lumberjack who learn to make espresso, fix up a failing B&B, and generally butt heads in between loads of laundry.

Ginsberg, our hipster, is much like many of our other favourite M/M heroes: he’s funny, resilient, romantic, and sexy as hell. He’s also transgender; secure in his identity, his body, and his sexuality; and working in a career he loves. But his life isn’t without hardships. Ginsberg made his own family after his biological one turned out to be too toxic to live with. He scrimped and saved and borrowed to pay for the medical care he needed to be happy and healthy. He found a roof over his head as a “considerate couchsurfer,” living with friends and acquaintances on a temporary basis when money got tight. In Derrick and his failing B&B, Ginsberg finally finds an opportunity to have a real home, if only he can convince Derrick to keep the place open.

Ginsberg’s background of financial hardship and lack of family support is all too common among many people who, like him, are trans and trying to live happy, fulfilling lives as their true selves. As such, we the authors, our publisher Riptide, and our generous blog tour hosts will be using the next few days to highlight the personal fundraisers of real trans people in need. We hope that if you’ve got a little extra money this month, you’ll consider donating, and if money’s tight, maybe you can help by spreading the word, too.

For our part, Rachel, Heidi, and Riptide will be giving donors a $5 Riptide credit code for every $10 in donations you make (up to $50 in codes per person, up to $5,000 in codes overall)–just email your donation receipt(s) to info@riptidepublishing.com with the subject line “Burnt Toast Tour Donation,” and Riptide will send out all $5 codes a week after the tour ends. (It’s totally cool, by the way, to spread your donations across multiple fundraisers if you’d like; we’ll add up all your receipts sent in a single email and base your credit vouchers on the grand total.)

We’re also hosting a special contest for people who donate: every dollar in donations to any of these fundraisers will earn you an entry into a drawing for a full paperback set of Riptide’s current Bluewater Bay lineup, OR two signed paperback copies of The Burnt Toast B&B. We’ll draw one week after the blog tour ends. Every dollar helps, and every dollar counts!

Lastly, we’ll randomly select three commenters from all the tour stops and donate $50 apiece in each winner’s name to the trans charity or fundraiser of their choice. (Please be sure to leave a way for us to contact you if you win!)

Today’s featured fundraiser is for Oliver Shawn Bragg, and you can find it at http://www.gofundme.com/OliverShawn. And here’s Oliver 🙂

Oliver is a young trans man currently on HRT and saving for top surgery. As he’s only making minimum wage right now, he very much needs our help. You can learn more about Oliver and donate to his surgery fund at his fundraiser page, http://www.gofundme.com/OliverShawn.

Thank you so much for following our (slightly unconventional) blog tour! Be sure to leave a comment on this or any of our other tour stops for a chance to have $50 donated in your name to a trans-related fundraiser/charity of your choice. And if you choose to donate to any of the fundraisers we’ve highlighted over the course of the tour, don’t forget to forward proof of your donation to info@riptidepublishing.com with the subject line “Burnt Toast Tour Donation” to claim your $5 coupon(s) and enter your name in the extra special drawing!

Lastly, if you or someone you love is transgender and going through a difficult time, please check out the Trans Lifeline, http://www.translifeline.org/. This crisis helpline is staffed entirely by trans volunteers and runs at least twelve hours a day, seven days a week, in the US and Canada. If you’re in crisis, please call them. If you’d like to support this nonprofit, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/translifeline.

About The Burnt Toast B&B

After breaking his arm on set, Wolf’s Landing stuntman Ginsberg Sloan finds himself temporarily out of work. Luckily, Bluewater Bay’s worst B&B has cheap long-term rates, and Ginsberg’s not too proud to take advantage of them.

Derrick Richards, a grizzled laid-off logger, inherited the B&B after his parents’ untimely deaths. Making beds and cooking sunny-side-up eggs is hardly Derrick’s idea of a man’s way to make a living, but just as he’s decided to shut the place down, Ginsberg shows up on his doorstep, pitiful and soaking wet, and Derrick can hardly send him packing.

Not outright, at least.

The plan? Carry on the B&B’s tradition of terrible customer service and even worse food until the pampered city boy leaves voluntarily. What Derrick doesn’t count on, though, is that the lousier he gets at hosting, the more he convinces bored, busybody Ginsberg to try to get the B&B back on track. And he definitely doesn’t count on the growing attraction between them, or how much more he learns from Ginsberg than how to put out kitchen fires.

About Heidi Belleau

Heidi Belleau was born and raised in small town New Brunswick, Canada. She now lives in Alberta with her husband, an Irish ex-pat whose long work hours in the trades leave her plenty of quiet time to write.

She has a degree in history from Simon Fraser University with a concentration in British and Irish studies; much of her work centred on popular culture, oral folklore, and sexuality, but she was known to perplex her professors with unironic papers on the historical roots of modern romance novel tropes. (Ask her about Highlanders!)

Her writing reflects everything she loves: diverse casts of characters, a sense of history and place, equal parts witty and filthy dialogue, the occasional mythological twist, and most of all, love—in all its weird and wonderful forms.

About Rachel Haimowitz

Rachel Haimowitz is an M/M erotic romance author and the Publisher of Riptide Publishing. She’s also a sadist with a pesky conscience, shamelessly silly, and quite proudly pervish. Fortunately, all those things make writing a lot more fun for her . . . if not so much for her characters.

When she’s not writing about hot guys getting it on (or just plain getting it; her characters rarely escape a story unscathed), she loves to read, hike, camp, sing, perform in community theater, and glue captions to cats. She also has a particular fondness for her very needy dog, her even needier cat, and shouting at kids to get off her lawn.

Honorary Blogger Tempeste O’Riley: Physical Limits and Deserving Love + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Physical Limits and Deserving Love

by Tempeste O’Riley

Today I thought I’d talk a little about Kaden and why he believes he does not deserve the love and acceptance of a Dom due to his physical limitations.

Kade is loving, submissive, and at one time, had confidence. Then he was the victim of a sever gay bashing, and the only part that stayed the same was the loving part. He packed away his toys and tried to ignore a huge part of himself because he doesn’t believe a Dom would really want him; would be willing to modify things for him and still enjoy their time together.

One of the things that many with mobility issues face is how the able-bodied world around them treats them. This wasn’t something I really thought much of until I began having trouble walking. I got firsthand and up-close knowledge of how some act when you are using forearm crutches or a wheelchair. The way people acted and spoke to me changed. Whether they would meet my gaze or look over my head to speak to me. And may other things altered when my disability became visible due to my tools of mobility.

It’s hard some days to keep your faith in others when faced with others that treat you as less of a person. Then add in that Kade loved kneeling (something he can no longer do), caning (something many would be scared to do thanks to his part injuries), and more. Plus, he did try going to a couple of clubs, where the Doms ignored him. That’s a hard mix to handle and not take personal.

It’s not that he doesn’t think he deserves love, but rather that he doesn’t believe anyone will ever look past his wheels to see the boy he truly is inside.

About Caged Sanctuary

1Kaden Thorn, a dental surgeon who lives a quiet life, has no hope of finding the love he craves. A vicious gay bashing cost him the use of his legs and confined him to a wheelchair. He has given up hope of finding a Dom or even a nonkink partner to love him. When his best friend practically forces him to attend a dinner party, the last thing he expects is a strong Dom who can see beyond his wheels.

Deacon James is an architect and a demanding Dom, but he has spent the past couple of years without a sub or partner. When an employee invites him to a dinner party to meet his girlfriend, Deacon smells a setup but agrees anyway. He prides himself on being an excellent judge of character, and when he meets the younger dentist, he sees past the chair and finds a sweet submissive man who more than piques his interest.

Kade’s fears and demons continue to haunt him, challenging Deacon to use everything he’s learned as a Dom to earn Kade’s trust and submission. Deacon’s determined, though, willing to battle all of it to have Kade by his side and at his feet.

An Excerpt from Caged Sanctuary

“Can I help you?”

“Delivery for a Kade Thorn,” the bored-looking man said, holding out the box.

“That’s me.”

After signing for the box, Kade set it in his lap, intending to return to his office before opening it. Sunny, the receptionist, and Katie had other ideas. “So… open it already and see who it’s from,” Sunny insisted, her eyes wide. He knew he shouldn’t be surprised, after all, he’d never gotten a personal delivery at the office before, but as he had no idea what he might find within, he wasn’t certain opening it with others there was the best idea.

“Not here. It’s personal.” Kade looked around, noting a few patients staring, and knew he was blushing again. Swallowing hard, he glanced at the box in his lap then spun himself around and sped down the hall. He wanted to know what was in the box, almost as much as he didn’t want to be watched opening it. Behind him, Katie and Sunny giggled, promising to hunt him down if he didn’t spill soon.

Trying hard to ignore them both, Kade reentered his office, pausing to lock the door this time. Once back at his desk, he set the long box down, then pulled the ribbon off carefully, not wanting to damage it. He slowly slid the lid off, more nervous than he thought he ought to be. There was a cream-colored card tucked into the white tissue paper covering the contents.

Kade picked up the card and opened it.

Kade,

I saw this rose and thought of you. I hope you like the material. I simply love leather. Don’t you?

Deacon

He stared at the card, throat tight as he thought about how sweet Deacon was being already. No one sent him gifts. Ever.

Excited, Kade quickly set the card aside, then opened the tissue, revealing a beautiful, long-stemmed, emerald green leather rose with delicate black lace between the petals. Staring at the rose for a moment, he idly noted that even the stem and leaves were made of soft leather. He’d never seen anything like it and could hardly believe it was for him. They hadn’t even had their first real dinner together yet and already he felt more cherished than he ever had before. He wasn’t sure whether he should be happy that Deacon was so attentive or depressed that no one else had ever done anything like this.

After staring at and carefully stroking the soft petals for a few more moments, Kade reverently set it back into the satin lining the box. He then woke up the computer and quickly sent a thank you e-mail to Deacon, wishing it were Friday evening already.

Honorary Blogger Will Freshwater: How NOT to Write a Successful M/M Romance Novel + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

How NOT to Write a Successful M/M Romance Novel

by Will Freshwater

Most reviewers of Favorite Son usually comment on how the book doesn’t exactly fit neatly into the M/M romance genre. While I won’t bother disagreeing with the growing list of critical assessments, I will shamelessly exploit their comments and poke fun at myself by explaining how NOT to write a successful M/M romance novel:

Be a gay man.  First, and most important, I need to say how much I genuinely respect and admire all authors, regardless of gender. However, it does seem that most successful M/M romances are written by women. While I’m certain that having a penis doesn’t make me any more or less knowledgeable about love, it certainly seemed to limit what I could write about. When I started crafting the novel, my focus was on the ubermasculine topic of politics, but by the end of the first chapter, John Wells, the protagonist, was already making goo-goo eyes at some random guy on the subway. Although it’s a generalization, people usually assume that gay men are more interested in sex than in romance.  That might be true, but I’m just hoping readers will overlook my gender and give Favorite Son a chance.

Make the protagonist a workaholic. Is there anything sexier than a man who spends fourteen hours a day at the office, slaving away over draft legislation and legal memos? Early in the writing process, I realized John was far too engrossed in his work to ever give romance a second thought. Still, I know from experience how easy it is to transform zeal into love and channel ambition into passion. Initially, it seems unlikely that Peter and Danny would ever stop working long enough to fall for each other, but collaborating to restore the chapel becomes the foundation of a truly transformative relationship.

Put a fully clothed silhouette of a man on the cover. This one speaks for itself, no? The cover of Favorite Son may not be salacious, but it definitely tells a story of a man struggling to reconcile his two worlds. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Make the protagonist’s love interest straight. Opposites attract, but how can there be any hope for love or romance when one character is gay and the other is straight? Midway through the first draft of my novel, I decided it would be more interesting, albeit a bit unconventional, to write about an intense “bromance” between friends. After all, romance is defined as “an ardent emotional attachment or involvement between two people.” And besides, it seemed highly unlikely that John would jump back into a relationship after having been burned so badly by David and Paul.

Don’t include any sex scenes. Sex sells. Anyone who watches TV after dark can attest to that fact. Even though I knew that most successful romance novels contain a fair amount of heat, I made the conscious decision not to include any graphic scenes. When Florence Woodside shows up early at Peter’s cottage unannounced, the two horny, half-naked guys inside end up getting a hearty breakfast — not sex. Rather than focus my attention on describing what happens in the bedroom, I decided to work to develop complex, multidimensional characters and let readers use their imaginations to fill in the rest.

This whole post explaining how NOT to write a successful M/M romance novel really illustrates how silly it would have been to restrict the creative process with rules or expectations. As in love, a good writer should always follow his heart.  I know from experience: it always points you in the right direction.  And besides, there’s more to life than just finding success.  If you don’t believe me, read Favorite Son.
