Letters from His Soldier

by Anna Lee

Hi, I’m Anna Lee and I’m here to talk about my latest release, His Soldier. I wanted to say first a big thank you to The Blogger Girls, for having me here today! And thank you to everyone who stops by. ☺

I first got inspiration from a song to write His Solider. I had the idea that Dean would lose his brother, Dax, and that loss would be felt throughout the story. At the same time, I wanted it to be a story of hope and finding love. So, Dean is an English teacher and a bookworm, he finds solace in writing and his books. As a way to cope and honor his brother, he becomes an Army pen pal to Ryder. I thought about all the ways that we communicate nowadays: email, text, phone, letters, Skype, etc. I went with them first connecting through letters because I think they’re really personal. As Dean says, “Everything is so techy now, you know email, texts, and written letters are rare. I guess that was part of the appeal, this just feels more important taking the time to write by hand. And you deserve that.”  Letters can be intimate and allow people to talk privately. It’s also something that Ryder could hold on to and keep close.

I did have a pen pal in middle school. One of my friends, she wrote me every week over summer break when I went through a rough patch after losing my grandma. I remember how much it meant to me that she took the time to do that. I knew she really cared and it was nice to have someone I could talk to. I also remember how excited I was back then waiting to see when the next letter would come in the mail.

I don’t have any military experience, though I do have people in my family who have served. I did do an extensive amount of research. It was important for me to get it right, and make it as real as Dean and Ryder felt to me. So, I read up on forts, camps, mines, squads, etc. I also had a few friends with military experience and went to them for advice a couple of times. They were very helpful.

I also did a lot of research on Ryder’s injury and prosthesis. One of the first scenes I wrote was when Ryder and Dean first meet, so I knew right away the story I wanted to tell with them. Ryder’s changed and he thinks he’s broken, but Dean’s not about to give up on him.

Thanks again and happy reading! ☺

But once Dean learns what has happened, he immediately goes to Ryder, determined to help him heal and show him that he loves him no matter what. Honorary Blogger Keira Andrews: Going Over the Rainbow with David and Isaac + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Going Over the Rainbow with David and Isaac

by Keira Andrews

In A Clean Break, the sequel to A Forbidden Rumspringa, young Amish men David and Isaac have left their families and entire way of life to be together. After journeying across the country to San Francisco to live with Isaac’s older brother, they are thrust into a new, confusing world.

One morning while I was writing this book, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” came up on my iPod. I hadn’t really been listening to the songs before it, and had been using the music as white noise since I was visiting my parents and needed to block out the distraction of my dad puttering around complaining about the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the forecast. (Fingers crossed I haven’t inherited the gene that causes an obsession with weather in retirement!)

It was Jason Castro’s cover of the Wizard of Oz classic that came on my iPod, and as I listened it struck me that in leaving behind their plain Amish lives—with no technology or luxury—David and Isaac were going on a similar journey to Dorothy. Moving from their rural Minnesota Amish settlement to vibrant and Technicolor San Francisco isn’t easy, and David in particular struggles with the culture shock. They are definitely not in Kansas anymore!

The line from the song that struck me most that morning was “And the dreams that you dare to dream/Really do come true.” To yearn for a different life—and to be different themselves—is quite daring when you grow up in a strict Amish community where obedience is valued above all else. But Isaac and David’s love for each other gives them the strength to break free and create a new life for themselves. It isn’t easy, but one day they’ll wake up where the clouds are far behind them. There’ll just be plenty of angst along the way first!

blogger_bee_trans

About A Clean Break

a clean break-200-300They’ve escaped to the outside world—but can they really be free?

David and Isaac have found happiness in each other’s arms. In faraway San Francisco, Isaac’s brother Aaron helps them explore confusing “English” life and move beyond the looming shadow of their Amish roots. For the first time, David and Isaac can be openly gay, yet they struggle to reconcile their sexuality with their faith. At least they don’t have to hide their relationship, which should make everything easier. Right?

But while Isaac thrives at school and makes new friends, David wrestles to come to terms with the reality of the outside world. Haunted by guilt at leaving his mother and sisters behind in Zebulon, he’s overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the city as he works to get his carpentry business off the ground.

While David and Isaac finally sleep side by side each night, fear and insecurity could drive them miles apart.

Honorary Blogger Alex Beecroft: Write What You Know They Say + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Write What You Know They Say

by Alex Beecroft

Probably the most hoary and well known piece of writing advice in the world is ‘Write what you know.’ Normally, I have to say I don’t pay a lot of attention. I would rather write what I imagine. However that was mostly because I was writing about 18th Century war ships or elves, neither of which I’m sad to say I have had much experience with in my life.

The decision to write a few contemporaries changed everything. I exist in contemporary times! Astonishing. Suddenly, I really could write about things that I have encountered in my real life. A mind boggling prospect. I was floored for a time. I didn’t know how to treat real things as if they belonged in fiction. Real things have an immovability and gravity that resists being too easily played with. How could I tell stories about things that existed outside my own head?

Believe it or not, it took me a good couple of years to solve this problem, and it was Alistair Maclean’s Caravan to Vaccarès that finally gave me the clue. Caravan to Vaccarès is, in theory, a contemporary, in that it is supposed to occur in the same real world in which the author lives, but there is a sinister ‘gypsy’ and a fat, jovial mastermind with a remarkable car. There’s a perky manic dream girl, the hero reinvents bull-leaping when the sinister figures attempt to murder him in the bull ring and the whole thing ends with an all action chase between a sports car and a speed boat.

It was huge and ridiculous good fun, but it wasn’t remotely believable as an account of anything I could imagine actually occurring in real life.

That’s when it struck me – it didn’t have to be.

I don’t know why it had never occurred to me before that contemporaries were also fiction, and that fiction by its very nature was, well… not real. When I realized that contemporaries could come at reality from a different slant – that they could include all the things the author liked and leave out all the contemporary things that the author disliked, I positively quivered. I quivered with joy, and also with power.

Because suddenly I realized I could do whatever I liked with my fictional contemporary. It could be as realistic as The Bourne Supremacy, if I wanted it to be. It could be as realistic as James Bond, if that was where my fancy lead me.

It wasn’t, of course. If you know me, you know that my fancy turns more towards the whimsical than towards the slick. But now I had my chance to create a contemporary setting that tickled my fancy, and I have to say, I tackled that prospect gleefully.

What do I like? I like small towns with lots of beautiful countryside around them. I like the intimacy of a small town setting where the community spirit is strong. Where you can meet friends accidentally when you’re walking through town.

I like bookshops. Especially those tardis-like ones that are larger on the inside than they appear from outside.

I like history, so naturally my town has Roman walls and a Bronze Age barrow nearby, and a manor with tied cottages where the wishes of the land owner still count as commands to their tenants. I wouldn’t like to live somewhere like that myself, but I’m glad to know such places still exist in England, just because it’s such a strong tie to the past.

But while I’m liking the cosy, sentimental small town setting, I’m also liking explosions and kidnaps and car chases and cops and robbers and mysterious figures glimpsed when their shadow is cast on the garden wall. It’s no fun if I have a whimsical Miss Marple’s St. Mary Meade sort of town and then don’t have shenanigans afoot in it.

And again, but. Having said all that, I also don’t want to have so much fun stuff that the thing stops feeling genuine at all. So amid all of that froth, there need to be characters I can really believe in, with trials and emotions I genuinely care about. And there I can write what I know without having to pass it through a filter of unreality. I know what it’s like to be middle aged and to wonder where the time has all gone. What happens now? I know what it’s like to be finally forced to face a childhood you spent your whole life running from.

I hope there’s enough honesty in Trowchester Blues to anchor the fun parts of it to something that is worthwhile. Trowchester might be a compendium of all the good bits stolen from other cities because I thought they were shiny, but Michael and Finn’s struggle to make themselves new on the other side of losing everything turned out to feel very real to me after all.

blogger_bee_trans

About Trowchester Blues

23484503Michael May is losing it. Long ago, he joined the Metropolitan Police to escape his father’s tyranny and protect people like himself. Now his father is dead, and he’s been fired for punching a suspect. Afraid of his own rage, he returns to Trowchester—and to his childhood home, with all its old fears and memories. When he meets a charming, bohemian bookshop owner who seems to like him, he clings tight.

Fintan Hulme is an honest man now. Five years ago, he retired from his work as a high class London fence and opened a bookshop. Then an old client brings him a stolen book too precious to turn away, and suddenly he’s dealing with arson and kidnapping, to say nothing of all the lies he has to tell his friends. Falling in love with an ex-cop with anger management issues is the last thing he should be doing.

Finn thinks Michael is incredibly sexy. Michael knows Finn is the only thing that still makes him smile. But in a relationship where cops and robbers are natural enemies, that might not be enough to save them.

Honorary Blogger Z.A. Maxfield: Vampire Novels Revamped + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Vampire Novels Revamped

by Z.A. Maxfield

Hi! I’m Z.A. Maxfield, better known as ZAM. Many thanks to The Blogger Girls for helping me celebrate my latest release, Deep Desire, book one of The Deep Series.

One of the most delicious aspects of writing Notturno, the book that has now been reprinted as Deep Desire, was creating the excerpts of the priceless, centuries old manuscript that becomes the prize in a battle of wits between document expert Adin Tredeger and vampire Donte Fedelta.

Donte used the journal to record his private thoughts about his boyhood lover, the angelic, innocent young Auselmo. When writing those, I took my cue from letters written in history by famous lovers, gay and straight, and I tried to give them a ring of authenticity, but also to make them accessible to 21st century romance readers.

Here’s one such excerpt, exclusively here:

I am in the snow today, my Auselmo, its whiteness and silence like the death I feel when you are not within my reach. Today I have chosen to draw the journey home to take my place after my brothers died. Do you recall? I know you must. We endured the ride and the endless chattering of the women, playing word games and kissing with our eyes. I remember seeing you ride your horse, the stubborn one I always called Affligere for the way it chased you and stole your hats. We slipped away in the night and clumsily tugged each other into spending.

The way you kissed me…

There were more stars in the sky that summer, Auselmo, because you placed them there for me every time you smiled. The closer we got to San Sepolcro, and home, the sicker I felt in the pit of my stomach.

I knew then, as you know now, that our life together—those pleasant idylls in the herb gardens of the monastery—was over. My family had a woman waiting for me. She was older, promised originally to my brother, who passed. I couldn’t bear to tell you, to see the stars in the sky wink out one by one with your unhappiness. Forgive me, Auselmo.

That was when I noticed the guard, the dark one with the scar over his eye, watching us. In return, I watched him, and one night got an eyeful of the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. I never told you, love, but I paid him for information, and he let me watch him with his lover. The things they did with their bodies both appalled and inflamed me, and I knew—I thought I knew—that if I could have one night like that with you, I would go to Renata and my family uncomplaining.

Was I ever that foolish? Please, my lover, never answer that, for you, with your beauty and your innocence, could never have understood my dark desire for you in those days.

These books have been edited. They’ve been retitled. There are new, cool covers. They’ll be available simultaneously in ebook and print.

Vampire novels. Revamped.

Here’s your New Title Cheat Sheet

Notturno – Deep Desire coming Feb. 3 2015

Vigil – Deep Deception coming July

Matins – Deep Deliverance coming December

About Deep Desire

There’s no leverage like seduction…until love takes a bite of his plans.

As the Indiana Jones of historical erotica, there is no document existing—or just rumored to exist—Adin Tredeger can’t unearth. Why he would risk the biggest coup of his career to join the mile-high club is beyond him. But the disarming, dark-eyed man who somehow enters Adin’s locked airplane washroom has him completely nude and coming apart. All without a whimper of protest.

From that moment, Adin and Donte Fedelta engage in an international battle of wit and cunning. The prize—a priceless, 500-year-old journal with illustrations so erotic it could make the Marquis de Sade blush.

Yet Donte’s desire for the journal goes far beyond simple possession. The undead nobleman wrote it. And he’s not above using every trick in his otherworldly arsenal—including seduction—to get it back.

Chemistry draws them together even as fortune tugs them apart. But when a third party joins the chase, they must unite to fight an enemy with a deadly goal—to erase Donte from history.

This book is a rerelease of a previously published book, with substantial rewrites.

About Z.A. Maxfield

_AuthorPhoto(1)Z.A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back.  Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.

If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

Honorary Blogger Rhys Ford: From Self-Pubbing to Re-releasing + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

From Self-Pubbing to Re-releasing

by Rhys Ford

A few years ago, I wrote an urban fantasy called Black Dog Blues. When the book simmered and boiled in my brain, there were a few things I wanted to have in this book: An elf who was unapologetically bisexual and raised human, blood, gore, guns and monsters.I’d released it into the wilds of self-pubbing—mostly because there wasn’t a place for him then— and Kai did pretty well.

Then, one day at a yarn store, Elizabeth North of Dreamspinner Press fame, started talking about a new venture they were trying out—DSP Publications, DSP’s boutique genre imprint. Long story short, Elizabeth asked if I’d submit Black Dog Blues, I did and now, here we are—with Kai making his way into the mainstream.

Repackaged and gone over again for red squiggles, Black Dog Blues is getting a re-release on February 3rd and I can’t be more excited. The story is the same but Anne Cain rocked me a new cover, more in line with the urban fantasy feel of that genre and I’ve had a chance to kick a few of the tires I wanted to kick in editing. The biggest thing about this re-release is that Kai is going out there again and I can put his sequel firmly into my queue.

If you’ve already read Black Dog Blues, thank you. REALLY. Thank you. You rock and you’ve made Black Dog Blues a success and got it notice. I cannot say thank you enough. No need to re-buy the book but if you’d left a review on Amazon—and have the time—repost it onto the new listing. Unlike Goodreads, re-release reviews don’t carry over. *grins*

If you haven’t read Black Dog Blues, ah—Kai really is my special precious, growly kitten. I adore writing him. I adore writing his world and man, there’s so many places to go with his story. I’m really looking forward to digging in.

Thank you again for letting my snarling elf have a space on your ebook reader. You all rock. Thank you.

blogger_bee_transBlack Dog Blues Blurb

Black Dog BluesEver since being part of the pot in a high-stakes poker game, elfin outcast Kai Gracen figures he used up his good karma when Dempsey, a human Stalker, won the hand and took him in. Following the violent merge of Earth and Underhill, the human and elfin races are left with a messy, monster-ridden world, and Stalkers are the only cavalry willing to ride to someone’s rescue when something shadowy appears.

It’s a hard life but one Kai likes—filled with bounty, a few friends, and most importantly, no other elfin around to remind him of his past. And killing monsters is easy. Especially since he’s one himself.

But when a sidhe lord named Ryder arrives in San Diego, Kai is conscripted to do a job for Ryder’s fledgling Dawn Court. It’s supposed to be a simple run up the coast during dragon-mating season to retrieve a pregnant human woman seeking sanctuary. Easy, quick, and best of all, profitable. But Kai ends up in the middle of a deadly bloodline feud he has no hope of escaping.

No one ever got rich being a Stalker. But then few of them got old either and it doesn’t look like Kai will be the exception.

Honorary Blogger Jess Buffet: Baking with Seth from Always Been You + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Baking with Seth from Always Been You

by Jess Buffet

We all love the cupcake, and cheesecakes are popular, too. They’re traditional desserts that every generation is familiar with…but how about putting a spin on it. By combining two delicious desserts, you can come up with a unique taste and flavour all on its own. Something my character Seth from Always Been You does regularly. As a baker and a father, he is always looking for new ideas to keep people (and children) happy and content.

This little treat does just that.

Vanilla and White Chocolate Cheesecake Cupcake.

Ingredients

  • Cupcakes 115g unsalted butter
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 115g self raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • Topping 175g white chocolate
  • 175g cream cheese
  • 6 tablespoons of creme fraiche
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 6 tablespoons of icing sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180’c (gas 4)
  2. Beat 115g unsalted butter and 115g caster sugar together in a bowl. Then beat in 2 eggs and sift in 115g self raising flour. Then stir in a teaspoon of vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of milk.
  3. Spoon the mixture into paper cases (only about half way) and bake for about 15-20 mins or until golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  4. For the topping, melt 175g white chocolate (proper chocolate – no Hershey’s please!!) in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Beat together 175g cream cheese, 6 tablespoons of creme fraiche, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 6 tablespoons of icing sugar and add the melted chocolate. Smooth the mixture over the cakes and refrigerate until set. Decorate to make them look pretty (e.g hearts!)

An Excerpt from Always Been You

Walking through the bakery, Seth he proceeded to write his own lists for everything else. He became so involved that he hadn’t heard the chime from the front door. Remembering he needed the measurements for the new sign out front he spun around, and collided with a wall.

“Oh, damn. Sorry,” a deep baritone voice said. Long arms reached out and grabbed his hips before he could land on his ass.

Okay, so not a wall, but darn close. Stepping backward to see what, or more to the point whom he ran into, Seth’s gaze locked onto a pair of striking green eyes. Shards of ice ran down his spine as recognition hit him. God, he remembered those jade orbs that used to make him lose his breath.

Jumping back, Seth struggled for breath as he stared mutely at Jared. He couldn’t believe the guy was actually here. And he was still as gorgeous as ever. Jared stood roughly at six foot three, a few inches taller than Seth’s six foot. He was also wider, all of it muscle, and Seth noticed his blond hair was still cut short with just enough length to style it. The man wore charcoal gray slacks and an emerald-green shirt, that were tailor made.

Seeing Jared looking so good made Seth more than aware of the old Oktoberfest t-shirt he wore, and the jeans and sneakers that had both seen better days. Fiddling with his notes, Seth shuffled from foot to foot, not knowing what to do. Jared was right in front of him looking all yummy, casually leaning against the counter with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, and all Seth wanted to do was run. Taking in a deep breath, Seth snapped his head up when Jared finally spoke.

“Hey, Seth. It’s been a while.”

“Yeah, it has.” Apparently not long enough, Seth thought, as he tried to discreetly shift the ever growing bulge in his pants. Now was not the time for a hard-on. Not five seconds ago, he had forgotten how to draw air into his lungs, and now he was going to have a zipper indent. Seriously?

Silence descended, as the two of them just stood there staring at each other. Awkward much?

“So, what is it I can do for you?” Seth asked, trying to ignore the slight tremor in his voice as he walked around the other side of the counter. Hopefully that would hide one of his problems as he tried to regain some composure. Why did he still have to look so good? Wasn’t there some rule stating assholes were meant to look like toads.

“Actually, I’m here on Izzy’s behalf. She was roped into some fundraising thing for the school she works at and asked me to come meet you instead,” Jared replied as he lent forward, resting his forearms on the counter in front. A smirk formed on his handsome face as Seth took a step back.

“Ah, yes. I was told she was a teacher now. Brave of her,” he said, giving an awkward laugh, spreading his hands out onto the flat surface before him in order to support himself. Clearing his throat, he added, “Well, you can just tell her that she can come see me whenever she’s free.”

Jared stood straight, folding his arms across his chest as he studied Seth. “Yeah, she is brave. And no need to rebook, I know what she wants. I’m quite sure we can work something out.”

Why did that sound like an innuendo? This was definitely not going as he had planned. And why did Jared seem to be taking so much pleasure in this? Was this a game to him? Silly little gay boy, isn’t it cute that he still blushes. Well, he’d be damned if history was going to repeat itself. He was a successful businessman and baker. He had two beautiful children, and had survived a fucking bullet.

Straightening his back, he met Jared’s gaze.

“Fine. Let’s take a seat and get this over with, shall we?”

“Is that the way you talk to all of your clients? Cause I have to say, I’m surprised you get much business then,” drawled Jared.

Ignoring the comment, Seth led them to one of the booths. He cast a glance towards the kitchen, but Sal seemed to be preoccupied. Maybe telling the man to just ‘go for it’ hadn’t been a smart move. Something told him things were going to cost more than he thought.

Taking a seat opposite one another on the old scuffed booth with weathered red leather seating, that he absently noted to himself had to be added to the ever growing list of things that needed replacing, Seth launched straight into professional mode. He needed details to come up with something that the future bride wanted and that’s all he was focused on. At no time did he notice how good Jared looked, or how muscular he had gotten. Seth hadn’t even taken note of Jared’s soft pink lips or his large firm hands.

Really.

Not at all.

Dammit.

Honorary Blogger Lexi Ander: The Hardest Part of Writing a Series + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Hardest Part of Writing a Series

by Lexi Ander

I was talking to my husband about the topics I picked from my blogs posts and when I mentioned this one, Jason immediately turned the conversations toward my ADD. He thought the post should be about the rigors of completing a series when focusing can be a challenge. Honestly, I think he wanted everybody to know that he was the one who did the little things so that I could write. He does make great meals (when he doesn’t experiment).

Jason isn’t wrong. Writing when I’m prone to be distracted can be a chore. You should see me clean house. I dust two shelves and get sidetracked by something that needs to be put away… that reminds me I wanted to store my summer clothes… to I need to wash the curtains… to I need to clean the windows… and finally back to dusting the shelves next to said window. I’m not even sure how to punctuate that sentence. But you get the idea, right? Focusing can be an issue but that doesn’t mean I can’t.

This is why handwriting my first draft works so well for me—which was part of the topic I had planned for this blog post until the husband put his two cents in. I had thought about explaining how I reread the series in order to remind myself of the feel of the characters. Then I’d talk about my world building book to go over ideas and details from the series. ← That had been my idea, but once I considered Jason’s thoughts on the subject, I realized the two meshed and were relevant to each other.

Finding those Zen moments where I focus for long periods of time can be hard. There are a lot of things that easily distract me. I get hungry. My playlist is boring. The dogs have to go out. Now they want extra treats so queue the whining. I’m too hot, too cold, twitter beeped, the email binged… the list is endless. I’ve had to test things out to find out what works for me and what doesn’t. Handwriting the first draft away from the computer worked wonders. Everything fell away and nothing else existed except the story, the pencil, and the paper. What else worked was building a notebook that holds all the information for the series. All the picture inspiration, the descriptions, the random thoughts about where I wanted this detail to plot point resolutions is handwritten onto the pages. I have friends who give me the crazy eye over those two but I have four words for them. Blue Screen Of Death. If my computer crashes along with all my OCD backup sites, my book is still accessible to me.

Once I know how I get to that Zen place, then everything else usually falls into order. While there, I’d say the only time I’m distracted is when a story idea pops into my head while I’m writing. Usually it is an idea for a side story to the series I’m working on, so all I need to do is write the detail in the series notebook. When the new idea isn’t attached to my WIP then I have a journal that I put the idea in for later. Sometimes that’s really hard, because seriously, it’s a shiny that I would love to chase but I know better. ^_^ If I can claim anything at all it is the fact I can’t leave a WIP unfinished. I do follow through, it’s just that sometimes it take me a little longer to get to the end.

Thank you for stopping by and reading! Don’t forget to enter the giveaway before you leave. 🙂

About Songs of the Earth

Songs of the Earth [Print]Thrust into the role of Prince of the Lycans, Tristan strives to find his footing in a life suddenly rife with secrets and lies—and danger. Betrayed by a Goddess meant to safeguard him, desperate to protect his consort and their growing tribe, he can only prepare for the worst and struggle to hope.

And then the worst comes to kill them…

An Excerpt from Songs of the Earth

I sat on my horse, Dancing Socks, in the middle of the river that cut through my property, the chill of the water numbing my legs. We were stuck, trapped between two creatures of myth and a Goddess of the Lycan race. Behind me, six of my warriors in the fearsome Lupe battle form braced to protect me.

I was in deep, deep shit. For the life of me, I couldn’t see a way out. Two Shirdals―lion-eagles also known as gryphons―one in front of me and one behind, effectively cut off any escape. Socks and I couldn’t outrun these Sumerian creatures of myth. But they were the least of my problems. What held my full attention was the woman standing before me on the water’s edge.

The Goddess Ki, clothed in a long, flowing gauzy dress, wearing a crown of ram’s horns, with a bow and quiver of arrows over her left shoulder and a cudgel hanging from her waist. She held a lion cub’s leash while regarding me with a stern, assessing gaze.

“Tristan Javed Ksathra Janick, Prince of the Enkidu, do you know who I am?”

How could I, or any Lycan, not know her? Regardless of what had happened today, I’d believed there was a solution. There was always a way out as long as I continued to breathe—but this, her, I couldn’t fight and win.

“You are the Goddess Ki, consort of Enki, Lady Life, mother of all living things, Nourisher of Kings. I greet you, Goddess. Do with me as you will.”

From across the water, Ki smiled a very white smile. “Come to me, Tristan. We have much to discuss,” she commanded.

I nudged Socks with my knees and she reluctantly finished crossing the stream, nervously tossing her head and rolling her eyes at the Shirdal. Once out of the water, I guided her a safe distance to the side and dismounted, removing her wet saddle and blanket. Her muscles twitched as she held still for me.

For a moment, I leaned my forehead on Socks’s shoulder. She reached around and nibbled at my hair. Not a half hour ago, I had left the ranch to go for a ride. The morning had offered many revelations with an accumulation of events that changed the course of my life.

After breaking the bond with my Twin Flame, Theo Sullivan, I hadn’t expected to find happiness or to fall in love with my best friend, but I had. Last night we made love, and it had been the best night of my life. This morning I’d awakened to find out I was born of royal blood, and Ushna was my chosen consort. Before I could begin to grasp what that even meant, Caspian MacCuill—one of the Magi—and a group of Lycan warriors invaded my home and attempted to kidnap Ushna and blackmail our friend, Gregori Borchetta, which led to Ushna being shot while trying to protect me.

All I had wanted was an hour. One single, measly hour to gather my thoughts and figure out what the hell we needed to do next. Instead, I sat trapped with no way to escape. The only course of action left to me was to save as many lives as possible. No mortal defied a Goddess and lived. If only I knew what I’d done to draw her attention.

Reluctantly, I straightened, petting Socks’s velvety nose before I removed her bridle. Giving her a smack on the rump, I sent her away. With luck, she’d return home safely and not be eaten.

Ready for whatever fate awaited me at the hands of a Goddess who hadn’t walked the Earth in a very, very long time, I turned to Ki and waited. It couldn’t be taken as good fortune that she was here now.

“Why so gloomy, Tristan? Do you think so poorly of me that you expect to be struck down by my hand?” Ki asked, head tilted to the side as she stared with almond-shaped black eyes.

One Shirdal lay at her feet, allowing Ki to scratch the feathers between its ears. The picture presented seemed surreal, two things that shouldn’t exist in this modern world of skyscrapers, automobiles, space shuttles, and nuclear bombs. Yes, I kept an altar in my room where I left burnt offerings to the Warrior Goddess Anat and Shamash, God of Justice. Believing in the Gods and Goddesses didn’t mean one would manifest into my world and actually speak to me.

“I don’t wish to offend, Goddess. It’s… well… this has been a very unusual day. Right now, I’m assuming the worst because I cannot fathom why you are here—speaking to me.”

She gave me another toothy smile and glanced across the water to the Lupes harassing the other Shirdal. “Please call your warriors to you, Tristan. The Shirdals meant you no harm. They were only playing.”

I barely withheld an ugly snort. Playing with me? I could imagine them playing as they tossed me about with their sharp beaks. Without a word, I lifted a hand to the Lupes and they entered the water, intent upon me as they crossed in a straight line.

Honorary Blogger Shae Connor: Real-Life Meets Romance + Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Real-Life Romance

by Shae Connor

In the romance genre, one rule prevails over all others: the primary romantic relationship must have a happy ending. (There are quibbles around specifics, but for my purposes, let’s just stick with the basics.) The flavor of happy can vary widely, but the story must end with the characters together or it doesn’t qualify as a romance.

For traditional romance (which is to say, male/female romance), the target has long been a “happily ever after” (HEA) ending. In mainstream romance, that’s usually meant marriage and/or babies, although the definition has expanded over time to encompass happy endings without love declarations or long-term commitments.

In Unfortunate Son, the romantic arc isn’t the focus of the story. Yes, Evan and Riley develop a romantic (and sexual) relationship, and in the end, they’re together and pursuing that relationship. But the ending is far from a HEA. There are no grand declarations or major life events related to the relationships. If anything, at the end of the book, Evan and Riley are only at the beginning of their love story.

An ending like this one would best fit under a category that’s generally called a “happy for now” (HFN) ending. This label is applied to romances in which the relationship is still in its early stages, or the characters are at a point in their lives where lifetime commitments might not ring true. Young Adult romances are more likely to be HFN than HEA, for example. But the label fits almost any romance that doesn’t end with a long-term commitment.

For gay romance—for nearly all flavors of LGBT+ romance, in fact—stories that end in marriage (or engagements) are a relatively new development, even newer than the concept of gay love stories having happy endings at all. While a handful of states have allowed same-sex marriage for a decade or more, it’s only been within the past year that a wave of legalization for same-sex marriage has swept over the United States and many other parts of the world. I’ve watched, delighted, as dozens of same-sex couples I know (either personally or via online connections) have had their unions legalized, often many years after the participants had committed themselves to each other.

I think we’re starting to see a similar change occurring in gay romance. When I wrote my first novel four years ago, only six US states plus the District of Columbia allowed legal same-sex marriage. As I write this, that number stands at 36 (with several others on the cusp). It’s not really possible to overstate how much that means for the real-life couples who are now able to marry legally, but as a writer, it also means characters in stories set in all those states can now get engaged and married—just like the opposite-sex characters in “straight” romances have been able to do from the beginning. Publication schedules necessarily mean that it takes time for real-life developments to show up in fiction, but this seismic shift in real life will inevitably will be reflected in art.

For Evan and Riley, marriage is still off the table, in part because they live in Georgia, one of the few remaining states that does not allow legal same-sex marriage. But by the time they make it to the point in their relationship where marriage might be a consideration, they may well be able to take that legal step right at home. So while the ending to their story in Unfortunate Son may be only a HFN, it’s thrilling to know that their eventually HEA may extend all the way down the aisle.

About Unfortunate Son

_CoverArtUnfortunateSonFive years ago, Evan Day lost his lover in the Afghan sand, and in the fallout, he lost his military career and his family. With help from friends, he reinvented himself as porn star Trevor Hardball, but his scars are hidden, not healed. When Riley Yeats falls into Evan’s lap in a bar, he awakens a part of Evan he’d thought was dead and gone. Evan’s fascinated by the blond and twinky Riley, even though he’s the opposite of Evan’s usual type.

Then Evan’s family reappears his life, and Evan soon learns Riley has his own family-inflicted wounds—ones that make it hard for him to be there for Evan. A disastrous confrontation between Evan and his parents leaves Evan’s mother injured and Evan overcome by anger and fear. Losing his tenuous hold on his emotional control, Evan makes one bad decision after another, but maybe his final fall will be the wake-up call Evan needs to set things right—with his parents, and with Riley.

Honorary Blogger Sid Love: Happiness Is Being Lost In A Book! + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Happiness Is Being Lost In A Book!

by Sid Love

Before being an author, I am a reader – an avid one. Books are my life! Even when my weekdays are spent with thirteen to fourteen hours at work, you’ll always find a book in my bag that I read while travelling. My one-way trip to work is usually about a couple of hours long! So plenty of time to read 😉

This is the only me time I get and dare anyone steal it from me!

I read almost all genres – ranging from Old Classics to Mystery to even Sci-Fi and Fantasy fictions. (I can never digest an auto-biography though. It gives me migraine, just looking at its cover!) But if you ever ask me, what genre would I prefer to read any day, any time – I’ll say it’s Romance.

No doubt!

imagesOLZUND91And my inspiration to write in this genre comes especially from the Classic Romance novels written by Jane Austen. She is like an idol I’d praise for eternity. Seriously! I like her works that much. I am ashamed to admit though that I took about a month to finish Pride and Prejudice (that one was the first I read from her) but initially I thought the long descriptive passages were boring indeed! It’s not for everyone, I tell you but by the end of the story you feel like you have read a novel that will stay in your memory forever! A novel that you’d re-read a million times!

So far I’ve read P&P, Persuasion and Sense & Sensibility more than twice. And Emma is my all-time favorite! It’s just something about the main character that draws me in. Her being so imperfect in itself makes her flawless – if that even makes sense. Ha!

These stories make me want to write that same epic romance with two men in the equation! I want my readers to experience the kind of goose bumps I get every time I think about the letter written by Captain Wentworth and his words – “You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever…”

I can never be as good as Ms. Austen; that I am well aware of. However, I can at least try to honor her through my stories.

My newest release Let It Go is just the beginning.

About Let It Go

let-it-go-cover2“Everyone tells me to stay away from him. But if only I knew how to resist him…”

Goa isn’t supposed to be on Damon O’Neil’s list of places to stay while working in India. It’s merely a substitute for his planned trip to visit his sister in Paris for Christmas and the New Year. His boss had other ideas. He’s sent Damon to carry out urgent upgrades to the company’s offshore units and Damon can’t say no.

When Damon encounters an extra-spicy curry, a handsome Indian guy named Virat comes to his rescue. Damon is instantly smitten with his looks, and especially with his cute smile. But Damon soon realizes he is very much out of his league when Virat introduces his new wife.

However, there might just be a chance Virat isn’t all he pretends to be …

Honorary Blogger Heidi Belleau & Rachel Haimowitz: Opposites Attract + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Opposites Attract

by Heidi Belleau and Rachel Haimowitz

Hi, and welcome to the Burnt Toast B&B blog tour! We’re Heidi Belleau and Rachel Haimowitz, the authors of the book, and we’re so thankful to have you along for the ride, and thankful to our hosts, The Blogger Girls, for having us here today!

Normally on a blog tour, we like to share all kinds of behind the scenes goodies to do with the book: inspiration images, glimpses into research and plotting, deleted scenes, conversations about our process, character bios, etc. For this tour, though, we’re doing something a little different, but we hope you’ll still find it worth your while.

When Heidi first pitched The Burnt Toast B&B, it was as an opposites-attract story centering around the world’s worst B&B . . . and an M/M romcom where one of the lead guys just happened to be transgender. Writing solo, she’d done a trans book before, but that was very much a Trans Book, all about exploring gender identity, defining who you are, and coming out to your friends and loved ones. This book . . . isn’t that. It’s the story of an optimistic hipster stuntman and a pessimistic lumberjack who learn to make espresso, fix up a failing B&B, and generally butt heads in between loads of laundry.

Ginsberg, our hipster, is much like many of our other favourite M/M heroes: he’s funny, resilient, romantic, and sexy as hell. He’s also transgender; secure in his identity, his body, and his sexuality; and working in a career he loves. But his life isn’t without hardships. Ginsberg made his own family after his biological one turned out to be too toxic to live with. He scrimped and saved and borrowed to pay for the medical care he needed to be happy and healthy. He found a roof over his head as a “considerate couchsurfer,” living with friends and acquaintances on a temporary basis when money got tight. In Derrick and his failing B&B, Ginsberg finally finds an opportunity to have a real home, if only he can convince Derrick to keep the place open.

Ginsberg’s background of financial hardship and lack of family support is all too common among many people who, like him, are trans and trying to live happy, fulfilling lives as their true selves. As such, we the authors, our publisher Riptide, and our generous blog tour hosts will be using the next few days to highlight the personal fundraisers of real trans people in need. We hope that if you’ve got a little extra money this month, you’ll consider donating, and if money’s tight, maybe you can help by spreading the word, too.

For our part, Rachel, Heidi, and Riptide will be giving donors a $5 Riptide credit code for every $10 in donations you make (up to $50 in codes per person, up to $5,000 in codes overall)–just email your donation receipt(s) to info@riptidepublishing.com with the subject line “Burnt Toast Tour Donation,” and Riptide will send out all $5 codes a week after the tour ends. (It’s totally cool, by the way, to spread your donations across multiple fundraisers if you’d like; we’ll add up all your receipts sent in a single email and base your credit vouchers on the grand total.)

We’re also hosting a special contest for people who donate: every dollar in donations to any of these fundraisers will earn you an entry into a drawing for a full paperback set of Riptide’s current Bluewater Bay lineup, OR two signed paperback copies of The Burnt Toast B&B. We’ll draw one week after the blog tour ends. Every dollar helps, and every dollar counts!

Lastly, we’ll randomly select three commenters from all the tour stops and donate $50 apiece in each winner’s name to the trans charity or fundraiser of their choice. (Please be sure to leave a way for us to contact you if you win!)

Today’s featured fundraiser is for Oliver Shawn Bragg, and you can find it at http://www.gofundme.com/OliverShawn. And here’s Oliver 🙂

Oliver is a young trans man currently on HRT and saving for top surgery. As he’s only making minimum wage right now, he very much needs our help. You can learn more about Oliver and donate to his surgery fund at his fundraiser page, http://www.gofundme.com/OliverShawn.

Thank you so much for following our (slightly unconventional) blog tour! Be sure to leave a comment on this or any of our other tour stops for a chance to have $50 donated in your name to a trans-related fundraiser/charity of your choice. And if you choose to donate to any of the fundraisers we’ve highlighted over the course of the tour, don’t forget to forward proof of your donation to info@riptidepublishing.com with the subject line “Burnt Toast Tour Donation” to claim your $5 coupon(s) and enter your name in the extra special drawing!

Lastly, if you or someone you love is transgender and going through a difficult time, please check out the Trans Lifeline, http://www.translifeline.org/. This crisis helpline is staffed entirely by trans volunteers and runs at least twelve hours a day, seven days a week, in the US and Canada. If you’re in crisis, please call them. If you’d like to support this nonprofit, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/translifeline.

About The Burnt Toast B&B

After breaking his arm on set, Wolf’s Landing stuntman Ginsberg Sloan finds himself temporarily out of work. Luckily, Bluewater Bay’s worst B&B has cheap long-term rates, and Ginsberg’s not too proud to take advantage of them.

Derrick Richards, a grizzled laid-off logger, inherited the B&B after his parents’ untimely deaths. Making beds and cooking sunny-side-up eggs is hardly Derrick’s idea of a man’s way to make a living, but just as he’s decided to shut the place down, Ginsberg shows up on his doorstep, pitiful and soaking wet, and Derrick can hardly send him packing.

Not outright, at least.

The plan? Carry on the B&B’s tradition of terrible customer service and even worse food until the pampered city boy leaves voluntarily. What Derrick doesn’t count on, though, is that the lousier he gets at hosting, the more he convinces bored, busybody Ginsberg to try to get the B&B back on track. And he definitely doesn’t count on the growing attraction between them, or how much more he learns from Ginsberg than how to put out kitchen fires.

About Heidi Belleau

Heidi Belleau was born and raised in small town New Brunswick, Canada. She now lives in Alberta with her husband, an Irish ex-pat whose long work hours in the trades leave her plenty of quiet time to write.

She has a degree in history from Simon Fraser University with a concentration in British and Irish studies; much of her work centred on popular culture, oral folklore, and sexuality, but she was known to perplex her professors with unironic papers on the historical roots of modern romance novel tropes. (Ask her about Highlanders!)

Her writing reflects everything she loves: diverse casts of characters, a sense of history and place, equal parts witty and filthy dialogue, the occasional mythological twist, and most of all, love—in all its weird and wonderful forms.

About Rachel Haimowitz

Rachel Haimowitz is an M/M erotic romance author and the Publisher of Riptide Publishing. She’s also a sadist with a pesky conscience, shamelessly silly, and quite proudly pervish. Fortunately, all those things make writing a lot more fun for her . . . if not so much for her characters.

When she’s not writing about hot guys getting it on (or just plain getting it; her characters rarely escape a story unscathed), she loves to read, hike, camp, sing, perform in community theater, and glue captions to cats. She also has a particular fondness for her very needy dog, her even needier cat, and shouting at kids to get off her lawn.
