Write What You Know?

by Charlie Cochrane

They say you should write what you know. My response to that is, “Stuff and nonsense!” If people only wrote what they knew we’d have no Lord of the Rings (Tolkien was neither ent nor elf) or the Aubrey/Maturin books (Patrick O’Brian was never an officer in the age of sail). Taken to its logical, if excessive, conclusion, writing only what you know means everything has to be semi-autobiographical, because as soon as you write about any other person, in any setting other than the ones you’ve experienced, you’re writing what you don’t know for certain.

How desperately dull would that be, for both author and reader?

However, I’m not an advocate of “write about any and everything”. The author has to be able to create a world which feels authentic. O’Brian did masses of research for his Jack Aubrey books and it shows in the wonderful atmosphere he creates. Ditto Mary Renault with her books set in Ancient Greece. The dialogue, surroundings, clothes, manners and all the rest of it, must make a cohesive whole.

2014 is definitely the year of me writing about something I know very well, and that’s being a school governor. Now, before you roll your eyes and yawn, let me assure you that tensions can run very high in committee meetings. People care greatly about their schools and their children, and where people care, emotions flare up. Absolutely great fiction-fodder! I also train school governors (and my goodness, you meet some interesting characters in those sessions). I remember coming away from a selection and interviewing course thinking, “There’s a story to be told there,” not least because of the potential double entendres, and the fun you can have taking the mickey out of the jargon that tends to crop up.

Earlier this year MLR published my short story, Horns and Haloes, inspired by the experiences I’ve had running that course (and noting some of the daft questions people want to ask). That’s a sweet, funny little romance; while it was gestating, I had bigger fish frying. The idea for “The Best Corpse for the Job” arose when I was driving back from a school where I’d been delivering some training to help with their process of selecting a new headteacher. The session had been nicely sparky, and it occurred to me that if that sparkiness had been channelled in the wrong direction, blows could have been exchanged.

Both of these tales involve gay school governors. I must have met some of those, among the hundreds I’ve trained over the last few years, although I rarely get to train any governors as fit as Adam Matthews, the teacher governor from Best Corpse. I know of at least three gay headteachers at schools within twenty miles of where I’m on a governing body. They’re all three bloody good at their jobs, and why shouldn’t they be? And two of them are at church schools, so I had no qualms making my men work at church schools, too. That’s the reality of life. If anybody argues, and says that’s not realistic, I can back myself very well. I’m writing about what I know.

About The Best Corpse for the Job

22741222Tea and sympathy have never been so deadly.

Schoolteacher Adam Matthews just wants to help select a new headteacher and go home. The governors at Lindenshaw St Crispin’s have already failed miserably at finding the right candidate, so it’s make or break this second time round. But when one of the applicants is found strangled in the school, what should have been a straightforward decision turns tempestuous as a flash flood in their small English village.

Inspector Robin Bright isn’t thrilled to be back at St. Crispin’s. Memories of his days there are foul enough without tossing in a complicated murder case. And that handsome young teacher has him reminding himself not to fraternize with a witness. But it’s not long before Robin is relying on Adam for more than just his testimony.

As secrets amongst the governors emerge and a second person turns up dead, Robin needs to focus less on Adam and more on his investigation. But there are too many suspects, too many lies, and too many loose ends. Before they know it, Robin and Adam are fighting for their lives and their hearts.

Honorary Blogger Josh Lanyon: Kiss of Death + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_PostKiss of Death

by Josh Lanyon

Why mystery? This is a question I hear on a regular basis.

Especially because my mysteries all contain a heavy dollop of romance and eroticism. Why not simply write romance?

But unlike both the traditional and postmodern mystery, the modern mystery is less concerned with puzzles and more concerned with character and social/societal change — and that makes it the perfect vehicle to drive my relationship stories.

Is there any greater mystery than love? Putting lust aside for a moment — because that’s a whole different thing — what attracts us to another person? What makes us want to spend our life — share our bathroom counter space — with another human?

There is no more powerful emotion than love. It has the power to shape and transform lives. And yet love can fail — and people who once loved can plot to murder each other.

Why do people murder each other? If we’re talking premeditation, the classic motives for murder are greed, lust, revenge, and fear (all other motives are merely refinements of these — and as popular as the maniac serial killer is, madness is not actually a motive).

That means the stakes are always high in a murder mystery. In our society there’s no greater crime than the unlawful taking of another’s life. Death is the end game. There is no coming back, no reparation or recovery possible for the victim — and our cultural belief is that committing this act, the crime of taking another’s life — alters the murderer too. So with the type of mystery-romance I write, I’m always dealing with the best and the worst of human nature. The story is, by default, going to be intense. Hearts are at stake. Lives are at stake. The future is at stake.

But there are other reasons I love the mystery genre. I love it for its logical structure and its infinite variety. I love it for its rules and its twists and turns. I love its Golden Age traditions and the fact that it is still evolving, still changing. I love that it is a broad enough genre to contain both Dorothy L Sayers and Jasper Fforde. But what I especially love is that in the mystery novel, a violent and often chaotic world always makes sense. The “mystery” is always solved — even when it is not solved, the lack of solution is in itself a calculated resolution. And while the villain is not always captured and punished, most of the time — certainly in my stories — there is always justice.

A world where even violence makes sense — and finding love that will last a lifetime. You can’t ask for more than that.

About Fair Play

1Fifty years ago, Roland Mills belonged to a violent activist group. Now, someone is willing to kill to prevent him from publishing his memoirs.

When ex-FBI agent Elliot Mills is called out to examine the charred ruins of his childhood home, he quickly identifies the fire for what it is–arson. A knee injury may have forced Elliot out of the Bureau, but it’s not going to stop him from bringing the man who wants his father dead to justice.

Agent Tucker Lance is still working to find the serial killer who’s obsessed with Elliot and can’t bear the thought of his lover putting himself in additional danger. Straightlaced Tucker has never agreed with radical Roland on much–“opposing political viewpoints” is an understatement–but they’re united on this: Elliot needs to leave the case alone. Now.

Tucker would do nearly anything for the man he loves, but he won’t be used to gain Elliot access to the FBI’s resources. When the past comes back to play and everything both men had known to be true is questioned, their fragile relationship is left hanging in the balance.

Honorary Blogger Tyler May: Introducing Debut Author Tyler May + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Introducing Debut Author Tyler May

by Tyler May

My name is Tyler May and I am a new male/male author.   My first book, Angel of Darkness, was such a joy to write.  Actually, I did it on a whim.  I started researching some small submission calls from publishers and noticed that, around that time at least, most were looking for something for paranormal or for Halloween.   I decided to try it. It was originally supposed to be a short(less than 10K words) but I loved the characters so much that I decided to keep writing.  Thankfully, it turned into a full length novel.  Being too big to submit to any of the submissions that I had research earlier, I decided to try and submit it as a standalone novel.   To my surprise, I was humble that the three publishers that I submitted to all gave me a yes.   I decided to go with Hot Ink Press, and I’m very happy with my choice.

Now here we are months later and it’s out! My book! It’s amazing to say that. I hope that everyone enjoys it as much as I did writing it.  This journey has been a dream. I am so thankful for the chance to write and am fortunate to have found some supportive friends along the way.

Now that Angel of Darkness is out, I’m going to enjoy seeing how it does.  I am also going to finish up my second book (not related to Angel of Darkness and is not paranormal.)  Silver & Black is contracted and will be releasing on February 13, 2015.  Silver & Black is a m/m mystery romance.   I’m really enjoying the characters. I know you will as well ☺

I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement.  You can find me on Facebook I’m always present on social media. I love the interaction with the readers.  I will keep you all updated on the progress of Silver & Black and any other stories that are coming your way soon.

Thank you for the chance…..and good luck on the giveaway.

Honorary Blogger Hayley B. James: Inspiration from the Emerald City + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Inspiration from the Emerald City

by Hayley B. James

Thanks for having me! Today I want to discuss the setting of Undercover Addiction which happens to be one of my favorite cities—Seattle, Washington.

I have many friends in the great state of Washington, and I take advantage of their hospitality to visit at least once a year. The overcast weather is perfect for this desert gal that sees over 300 days of sunshine a year. I really enjoy Washington and I also think researching crime statistics is fun, so when I realized Seattle (and the surrounding area) has a bit of a human trafficking problem, I started playing around with using it for Undercover Addiction. When I first started planning a “sequel” I wanted to move the boys from Las Vegas, but I wasn’t sure where. Chicago was researched (it was mentioned in Sins once or twice), but Seattle worked much better for the plot I had outlined and for my research capabilities. And I might also be biased because I seriously love Washington.

Pike Place Market is a location Connor and Riley visit more than once, and Riley lives in the Fifteen Twenty-One Second Avenue luxury condominium building across from the Market. I’ve been to the tourist attraction a few times and it is quite crowded. The crowds work in Connor’s favor in the novel, but gave me claustrophobia. The condominium was one of a few I researched for Riley’s home. Another I discovered was used in 50 Shades of something, and I wanted to avoid anything related to that. The chosen condo has a better location for plot reasons and I’m a bit more familiar with the area. Plus, the idea of walls made of windows while Riley and Connor enjoy private moments was too hot to pass up.

Have you visited Seattle or Washington State? Does anyone else enjoy visiting it as much as me? I’m returning in December so leave any suggestions for touristy stops you might have. Leave a comment here or tweet me.

About Undercover Addiction

7Working Vice for the Seattle PD, Connor Bishop’s favorite part of the job is going undercover. His current assignment is to get close to Riley Drapeau, a human trafficker backed into a corner by the FBI and turned informant. Connor needs to milk him for information on his organization, but while doing so, sees an entirely different Riley than he expected.

Caught off balance, Connor relies heavily on Lucas, his outside man and only link to the real world, but he gets sucked in by Riley and his attempt to clear his name and prove his partners fabricated evidence to frame him.

Up to his eyeballs in the dark world of trafficking, Connor finds it easier to believe Riley than what the FBI is saying, especially when a leak is uncovered within the Bureau. The choices Connor has to make become even more difficult when Lucas admits he has feelings for him and promises a safe life far from harm. But Connor can’t deny the only man he wants to be with is Riley. Which forces him to decide if his addiction to the dangerous side of life can include loving a criminal.

An Excerpt from Undercover Addiction

Connor pushed Riley’s hand away, relieved when Riley allowed it. “I want to work with Evan and the FBI, but I don’t know if I can rely on you to not get me killed.”

“I don’t think you need to rely on anyone to survive.” Riley smiled gently, and Connor was almost fooled by the sweet expression. “You’ll be as safe as you want to be.”

Connor scoffed. “Don’t talk to me with riddles.”

Riley stepped forward, forcing Connor to move backward. Riley put a hand on Connor’s hip to prevent him escaping further. “If I wanted you dead, you would be dead,” he whispered against Connor’s neck.

A shiver from the soft touch of his breath rolled down Connor’s back. Connor opened his mouth to reply, but he couldn’t find his voice. Not with Riley so close, and not with Riley’s lips ghosting across his neck.

“I hope to see more of you, Connor.” Riley pressed his mouth against Connor’s pulse point.

Connor held strong against a wave of pleasure crashing into him. He reminded himself of the type of monster Riley was, but his skin prickled with desire anyway. Riley pulled back and whispered, “Tell me I’ll see you again.”

Connor swallowed hard. He realized he had wrapped his fingers around the front of Riley’s suit. He loosened his grip on the fabric. “You’ll see me again,” he said without emotion.

Riley touched his cheek. “I want you.”

Connor fought against the rising desire. Riley not only sold human bodies, but he broke their souls apart to force compliancy. Connor had seen it happen. He knew what type of evil Riley had to be. Sleeping with a stranger from a bar, ignorant to his true self, was forgivable, but falling victim to Riley’s burning touch was not.

“No.” Connor turned his head to escape Riley’s fingers lightly sweeping his jawline. “You need to leave.”

Riley took Connor’s jaw in his hand and Connor locked his gaze with Riley’s. The display of power gave Connor a jolt of adrenaline. He liked dancing with danger. Knowing Riley could kill him in that moment and leave undetected was a type of excitement Connor hated himself for enjoying.

Honorary Blogger Taryn Plendl: Writing, Reading and So Much More + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Writing, Reading and So Much More

by Taryn Plendl

A whole world opens up for me after 10:00 PM. My lovely daughters are in bed and my early-rising husband has said goodnight and here I sit alone on the sofa with my laptop. The only sound I hear is the fan of my computer and the occasional jingle from Jasper’s (my 18 year old dog) collar as he sleeps next to me, and if I’m lucky, the tapping of my fingers on the keys. This is when I listen to the voices inside my head—the ones that beg to be brought to life on paper.

I believe in love in all its forms. It is the one true emotion that speaks more in silence than words could ever. I think this is why I am drawn to the books I read. As a contemporary romance author, you would think that would be primarily what I read, but I actually step outside of my own genre a lot of times and find myself lost in the lives of men who love men. That’s right, the majority of the books I read are m/m romance. I have several gay friends who have found their happy ever after with “the one”. Their happiness hasn’t always come easy, but it is as true as any love I’ve seen, and I think that is what draws me to gay romance as a reader. (The idea of two hot men going at it doesn’t hurt either.) All in all, I like a story where love is fought for. One where obstacles are overcome, hurt and angst are high, but ultimately, love wins out in the end.

Love is what drives each of my books. I’m a sucker for a happy ending. It’s like my Prozac. I can’t stand the thought of my characters not finding that special someone that makes them whole. With that said, I tend to be all over the spectrum of the romance genre. I have books that are angsty, with troubled characters and ones that are romantic comedies, full of sarcasm and fun.

My newest series, The Chrome Series, is a bit on the lighter side. I would classify it as a friends to lovers romantic comedy. I hope you enjoy this excerpt, and I’ll let you in on a little secret: This scene is based on my own personal experience at the gym. Happy Reading!

An Excerpt from  So Much More

Avery

I turned off the car and sat back in my seat, looking around the parking lot. The car was cool and comfortable, nothing like the sweltering temperature outside. I could see the ripple in the air as the heat radiated off the black top. We were having an unseasonably warm streak for fall, and the idea of leaving the car so I could work up a sweat seemed ridiculous. People were walking by my car, looking fresh and built in their little spandex pants and sports bras that hardly covered their top half. Granted, most of them could carry it off fine with their svelte little bodies, but weren’t you supposed to wear something over that?

I was wearing a sports bra, too, but there was no way in hell that I would be showing it off. Hell, I had barely gotten the girls in there, and I had a sneaking suspicion they were currently planning a revolt. I would probably get just inside the door of the gym and they would spring free, taking out several unsuspecting people in the process. How people even worked out in clothes like this, I’d never understand. Weren’t you supposed to be able to at least breathe during a workout? I read somewhere that oxygen played a vital role in exercise.

My phone chirped, alerting me of an incoming message, from where it sat in the cup holder right next to the twenty-ounce diet soda I purchased for the ride to the gym. I didn’t even need to look at the phone to know it was my best friend, Morgan. Especially because it was Morgan’s bright idea to join a gym together in the first place. What was I thinking when I agreed? I was in good shape … okay, maybe not good shape, but I wasn’t overweight. I just had very little muscle, like wind could blow me over lack of muscle, but I knew this. I’d like to think I was blessed with a rapid metabolism, and, in combination with my self-diagnosed ADHD, I could basically eat whatever I wanted. Okay, so I may have been weak and clumsy as hell, but I could eat a double cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake and not gain an ounce. Don’t hate. I deserved that little bone the good Lord threw me for being so awkward.

The cell phone that remained untouched began to blare with the obnoxious ringtone that I had assigned to my best friend. I should have just responded to the previous text message to save myself from the auditory assault that was about to take place in my small car.

“Hello?” I made my voice sound as pleasant as possible.

“Oh, don’t act like you didn’t know it was me, Avery. What are you doing?” Morgan asked. I could picture her hand on her hip, foot tapping, other arm waving as she spoke.

“I’m just about there,” I lied.

“I call bullshit. I’ve been watching you sit in the parking lot for the last five minutes. Get your ass in here.” She hung up before I could respond.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” I groaned. “Well, Avery, are you ready to make a fool of yourself?” I mumbled to myself as I stepped out of the car into the oppressive air. It was time to just get this over with.

I could tell it was definitely a bad sign that I was out of breath by the time I reached the door to the gym, and somehow I anticipated my work out to be a bit more extensive than walking across a parking lot and climbing some stairs. “Hey.” I put on my best smile as I walked up to Morgan.

Morgan came into my life when I was floundering. A recent graduate, fresh out of college with a degree in English I had no idea what I wanted to do with, she found me sitting in a coffee shop with my laptop open, fighting back tears. Searching for jobs and coming up empty, I was beyond frustrated.  Knowing I should have listened to everyone who had told me there wasn’t a lot of options for someone with a four-year English degree, I sat there trying to figure out how I could avoid going back to Ohio with my tail between my legs and live with my parents.

Morgan sat down and watched me for a minute before tilting her head and telling me to spill it. I ended up having a major case of verbal vomit, telling her about everything from my sheltered childhood to my first heartbreak and finally the fact that I was an unemployed college graduate with zero job prospects. At this point, I was completely surprised that Morgan hadn’t excused herself and left me wallowing in my self-pity. I probably would have, but fortunately she was a better person than I was.

It turned out that she had some connections with some local businesses that were looking for a freelance writer, and she hooked me up. After that, we started hanging out several nights a week. With my sarcastic nature and her ability to ignore it, we were fast friends. When my lease was up, I moved in with her, and until just a few months ago, we were still roommates. As much fun as it was to live with her, I really loved having my own place.

“I already checked us in.” Morgan handed me a bottle of water, already dripping with condensation, and grabbed my arm, pulling me into the middle of the … holy hell, this wasn’t a gym! It was a freaking meat market! The same girls in the sports bras that I’d watched walk past my car had multiplied into a rainbow of sports bras and black spandex covering just about every surface of the room. Loud music rattled off the walls as two guys for every girl strutted around, spreading their testosterone-soaked pheromones. Some of them were bouncing around on the balls of their feet, swinging their arms back and forth in what I could only assume was some kind of gym mating dance to attract the females. The smell was that of musky gym shorts and made me shiver as I was temporarily transported back to the days of high school gym class. Not a place any of us needed to revisit.

“Good Lord, Avery, you act like you’ve never been in a gym before. Don’t look like I just kicked your puppy.” Morgan continued to pull me toward a room at the other side of the gym.

“Why couldn’t we have joined that women-only gym that promotes a quick thirty-minute workout?” I asked, tripping over some type of belt lying next to a weight bench. The floor had a cushiony feel that added a bit of a bounce to my step as we walked.

“The one your grandma goes to?” Morgan rolled her eyes at me. Point taken, but at least it would have been safe.

“Aaahhhh!” A loud, deep male voice bellowed right next to me, causing me to jump back, nearly falling flat on my butt.

“For the love of all that’s holy! Why in the hell is he yelling?” I had just about lost all bodily functions as we passed by the guy, who was squatting with a barbell on his shoulders. Apparently it was a bit heavy, or it was part of his mating call. He proceeded to throw his barbell onto the ground, swinging his arms back and forth and tilting his head from side to side, neck cracking each way. Gross. That was it. I wanted out. The only thing that kept me moving forward was the hope that whatever was behind the door we were walking toward held some sort of peace and refuge.

Morgan was openly laughing at me. “You need to get out more.”

“Do you remember when I asked for your opinion? Yeah, me neither, bitch.” My grumbling did nothing but encourage Morgan’s laughter.

She opened the door, allowing me to go in first. The room was on the smaller side. The floors were covered with rubber mats that were gray like the darkest of rain clouds, and had four rows of stationary bikes with five bikes in each row. The room was dimly lit, giving it a calm romantic feel with the dark red walls, and at the front was a small stage with another stationary bike that faced the rest of the room. I could only assume it was for the instructor. Behind the solo bike was a wall of mirrors, which unfortunately gave everyone in the room a front row seat to everyone else. That’s all I needed—an audience to my awkward attempt at a workout.

“We’re riding bikes?” I asked Morgan, looking around the room. There were only a handful of people adjusting their chosen bikes with towels laid over their shoulders. Did I need a towel? Letting out a small breath, I relaxed a bit. It was nice and quiet in here, only the occasional noise filtering in from beyond the door whenever it opened. I supposed I could be happy doing this, away from the mating rituals of the main gym.

“Let’s get up front.” Morgan didn’t wait for my reply, and I had a feeling it would just be easier to go with it, so I silently followed. Riding bikes was something I used to do all the time when I was little. I could get on board with this. At least with these bikes I wasn’t going to wreck.

Morgan had me stand next to the bike seat and adjusted it to the proper height. Hopping on the bike, I placed my feet in the pedal holders, pedaling, just to try it out. This wasn’t bad, I could do this, I encouraged myself as I pedaled slowly, watching as the room filled up. People of all types came in. Some looked like stuffy businessmen who shoved themselves into name-brand workout clothing in hopes of maintaining their middle-age spread, and then, of course, there were the sports-bra bimbos with their barely-there spandex shorts. And then there was me in my yoga pants—I had actually never even been to yoga—and an oversized t-shirt.

About five minutes into my leisurely ride, a small blonde woman with a cute pixie cut came in and started adjusting the bike at the front of the room. She seemed sweet as she smiled at the class before messing with the stereo, hooking it to her iPod. I felt myself relax even more. “Is everyone set with their bikes?” she asked the class as she climbed up on her own bike in front of them. I nodded along with everyone else.

With no protests, she nodded back and pressed play. She began to pedal, so in turn, we all did, too. Glancing over at Morgan, I grinned as she winked me. The music began to play some sort of piano chords, and I had a sudden vision of a leisurely ride through the mountains, the cool breeze flowing through my hair as I climbed higher toward the fluffy clouds. It was calming and comfortable, and unfortunately very short-lived as my world came to a screeching halt. The soft piano music I had briefly enjoyed morphed into a bass beat that had my insides bouncing. The sudden change sent up red flags, but it was too late. I was stuck.

Suddenly our little pixie friend transformed into a growling, fierce woman as she screamed, “Let’s go!” She pedaled faster as the rest of the class followed as if all of this was completely normal, and maybe it was, except nobody bothered to clue me in on the little secret. I looked around to see if anyone else was startled by the change in the atmosphere, but no one seemed out of sorts. Just me, and I knew that if I had been closer to the door, I would have jumped off this bike and made a run for it, but my best friend, who, by the way, was grinning as she pedaled fiercely, chose the two bikes farthest from the door … and in the front row.

“Up!” the pixie yelled as everyone stood up on the pedals without even slowing down, pedaling like someone was chasing us. I was tempted to look back and see if someone was, in fact, back there.

“Down!” We all sat and continued pedaling like mad. I could feel the burn in my legs, but continued to pedal anyway.

“Up!” she screamed again. I was getting whiplash with her changing commands, and I couldn’t be certain, but I was pretty sure the instructor’s eyes glowed red as she grinned at me. I wanted to look away, but I refused to show her fear, so I just pedaled like my life depended on it. It felt like I was in that movie with Sandra Bullock where she was on the bus and couldn’t slow down or it would blow up. I was pretty sure something like that would happen to my bike if I stopped, so all I could do was pedal and plan the slow torturous death of my best friend for putting me in this Godforsaken situation in the first place.

The loud song moved into another and then another after that before the bike Nazi finally slowed down to a relatively normal rate. Gasping for breath, I held on for dear life, sure I was being suffocated by the tourniquet bra that was thankfully still holding my girls in place. The ponytail that had been neatly pulled back before we started, now sat off to the side, clinging to my shoulder like a saturated mop. Sweat was running in my eyes, and I wanted to call everyone who ever said sweating was a sign that you had a good workout a big fat liar. I was pretty sure this sweat was my body crying out due to the cruelty it just endured at the hands of the deceitful pixie. Now I understood why everyone had a fucking towel!

About Taryn Plendl

taryn-headshotTaryn discovered her love for books at an early age, spending many hours lost in someone else’s story.

It wasn’t until well into adult hood that she discovered, late at night while the house was quiet, that she had just as many stories inside her just waiting to be let out. Writing has been a way for her to step away from reality and live a bit through her fun and sometimes damaged characters. You will almost always find a Happy Ever After at the end of her stories. She can’t help it, it’s an addiction.

She’s a Southwestern girl living a Mid-Atlantic life with her husband of seventeen years and two incredible daughters who inspire her daily. She is proud to be an advocate for her child with autism, and feels incredibly blessed to be able to see the world through her eyes. Her daughters teach her more than she could ever teach them.

She enjoys reading, writing and spending time with her family, but cherishes those quiet nights after everyone is asleep when she can curl up on the couch with her fifteen year old dog. (Shh, don’t tell…He’s not supposed to be on the couch.)

Honorary Blogger Susan Mac Nicol: Recipe for Love + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Recipe for Love

by Susan Mac Nicol

I didn’t start off to write a story about chefs. I wanted to write a story set around a central place where people could meet. So I thought a restaurant would be a really good place. A place with character where people felt welcome. I also wanted to write about a man who had lost everything-in his eyes anyway -and felt himself to be half the man he used to be. So a chef who had lost his sense of taste and smell sort of fit in with the idea of the restaurant.  So Love You Senseless came to be.

Recipes- as I don’t cook much, I can’t really claim to have a recipe to share. I’d feel a bit like a fraud. I guess if I wanted to be cheesy, I could make a recipe for Love ?

Take two men, one seasoned with tragedy and another one flavoured with compassion

Throw them into a mixing bowl of cosmopolitan influence, warm and inviting seasoning, and mix well.

Add a soupcon of supporting ingredients, some intense moments, flares of passion, and a pinch of red head, and place in an oven that’s been turned up to scorching…

Bake for a while, while enjoying a nice glass of Rioja, then remove dish, sit back and relax and enjoy.

I can’t think of anything better I’d rather do myself ☺

About Love You Senseless

MoL_Love You Senseless_coverLondon’s saucy up-and-coming chef, Eddie Tripp has just the right recipe to drive tragedy from the mind of Gideon Kent—and leave him senseless with desire.

From Soho to Norwich, there’s no escaping love.

A TASTE OF FOREVER

An award-winning chef with his own restaurant and an inexhaustible passion, Gideon Kent once had everything. Then came tragedy. It stole more than Gideon’s home. He hasn’t cooked since.

Until Eddie Tripp. Fun-loving and vivacious, the Norfolk redhead’s a real up-and-comer in Gideon’s kitchen—and other places. Slim where Gideon’s broad, easy-going where Gideon is growly, he and Gideon seem polar opposites, and yet Eddie conjures flavors that would tempt anyone with a taste for perfection. The sauce of love is already simmering, and this pair is about to dine on the most delicious dish they’ve ever prepared. Because Eddie’s been Gideon’s missing ingredient all along.

About Susan Mac Nicol

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason.  She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.

Honorary Blogger Annabelle Jacobs: Torsere + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Torsere

by Annabelle Jacobs

Firstly, thank you for having me on your blog today.

My latest release, Alliance, is the concluding book in my fantasy trilogy, Torsere, and I’d like to introduce you to the main characters of the series.

The first book, Capture, is all about the beginning of the relationship between Ryneq, King of Torsere, and Nykin, a dragon rider in the king’s army.

When I started writing this series, I sort of had a vague image in my head of what each character should look like. So naturally I googled endlessly until I found someone who fitted it.

As the king, I wanted Ryneq to be strong and commanding. But as he was thrust into leadership unexpectedly when his parents were killed, he also needs to have a slight air of vulnerability underneath it all. When I picture him in my head, I see someone tall and intense looking, with dark hair and eyes.

A little like this…..

ryneqRyneq likes to rule by example, and leads his men into battle whenever possible. As a result, he’s taken by the enemy in Capture and is forced to sit back and let his people save him. Throughout Union and Alliance, he learns that his priorities need to change now he is king, and sometimes it’s better for his kingdom and his people, to step back and let others take the lead.

When I started writing Nykin, I wanted him to be the opposite of Ryneq—a little shy, naive maybe, but brave and loyal too. He’s young and doesn’t always think about the consequences of his actions. As he spends a lot of time in the air with his dragon, I pictured Nykin to be a little tanned and lean from all the riding.

NykinA little like this….

Nykin has been a dragon rider for a little over a year, born with the fire tattoo, and bonded to his dragon, Fimor, as soon as he came of age. Like Ryneq, Nykin has lost his parents, so he relies heavily on his friends for support, and on Fimor most of all.

He and Fimor share a telepathic link, there are no secrets between them. At the end of the day, Fimor is his dragon and will do anything he can to keep Nykin safe, even if it goes against the king’s orders.

Alliance is out on November 17th, and from now through release day, you can buy book one, Capture, for only 99c from Dreamspinner Press.

About Alliance

1King Ryneq and his dragon rider consort, Nykin, return to Torsere to defend the kingdom against the lowland armies already camped along Torsere’s borders. Seran wants the dragons, and with a new witch in his ranks, war is inevitable.

With the elves of Hervath now helping them, Ryneq has a chance at holding Seran at bay. But the witch is using old dark magic, and as Nykin and the dragon riders battle her deadly attack, unexpected betrayal forces Ryneq to make a difficult decision.

Faced with the prospect of losing his kingdom, Ryneq gambles on a plan that could ultimately save Torsere, if they can stay alive long enough to see it through. With Ryneq standing against Seran and his witch, time is of the essence, and Nykin must make a sacrifice to end the war. Only then will Ryneq and Nykin be able to start a life together.

Honorary Bloggers Calvin Summers & Ethan Hobbs: Rack & Ruin Blog Tour + Giveaway!

CCRRBlogTourBannerLG

Hey, I’m Agent Calvin Summers and this is my partner Agent Ethan Hobbs. I see they’ve decided to bring you along. I hate to burst your bubble, but you’ll be staying in the BearCat. If there is a shooter out there, no way Sloane’s letting you out of this truck. You’ll just have to watch from the windows. Don’t worry, they’re bulletproof. Hold on. Hobbs wants to know what you did to piss Ash off. He’s got that please-give-me-a-reason-to-punch-you-in-the-face look. Not that it’s all that different to his usual expression.

Calvin SummersOoh, you let Cael take the rap for you? Not a good move. Ash will bust up anyone who messes with Cael. Those two are tight. What? I don’t know, man. I don’t ask those kinds of questions. Besides, we can be close to our teammates without being secretly involved. Hobbs isn’t uncomfortable. He always looks like that. Shy? Yeah, I guess he is. You can talk to him, you know. Just don’t expect him to answer. Not verbally anyway. Of course it’s tough, but we find ways around it, don’t we bud? There’s that smile I like to see.

I suppose being best friends and partners has its challenges, but in a way it’s easier because we’ve been in each other’s hair since we were kids. We know everything about each other. I know when he’s having a really tough day, and I can help him through that. He knows when I need my own space, and when I need my best friend. We’ve done everything together. Went to the same schools, took the same classes, and joined the THIRDS at the same time. We worked so well together that during the recruitment process, Sparks made us partners without a second thought. Do we fight? Of course we do. But we know that no matter what happens between us, we’ll always be there for each other.

Ethan HobbsLooks like we’re staying here to keep you company. What if they need me? Look, I don’t go around taking people out. I work Defense like everyone else on the team. I’m called in to use my specialist skills as a last resort. When Sloane tells me to take my position, that’s it. Once I’m given the authorization from Sloane, I neutralize the target. That’s right. I can’t afford to see them as anything other than targets. Once it’s over, it’s a different story. Those targets become people. I didn’t become a sniper because I like doing it. I’m damn good at it and I have my ways of dealing with it. How does Hobbs feel about it? I know he’s frowning. Means he doesn’t like the question. You can’t ask these kinds of questions and expect simple answers.

The team’s moving in. There’s our guy. I really hope he doesn’t resist arrest. Oh shit, did he just throw a trashcan at Letty? She’s busting out the tranq gun. It’s pretty much over. Will Ash go after him for it? Are you insane? Ash would never get in Letty’s way. He knows better. Ash backs her up and steps in when he’s needed. Female agents get treated the same as male agents at the THIRDS. If they couldn’t keep up, they wouldn’t have been recruited. Rosa and Letty might be Human and smaller in stature than the rest of Destructive Delta, but they will take you out before you know what’s hit you. It’s over. Told you. Team’s heading back. Letty’s in the zone, so good luck with that.

Honorary Blogger Beany Sparks: Paws, Magic and the Start Of It All + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Paws, Magic and the Start Of It All

by Beany Sparks

What gave me the inspiration for the series? An anthology submission call.

I saw a submission call and thought it would be fun to write a story with a German Shepherd shifter so I started writing.

Aiden’s Shepherd was going to be my submission to the anthology and I had it all planned out. The word count was 10-30k and I thought, I can make it 15k and it’ll be fine. Famous last words! The story slowly got to 5k, then 10k, and then it took off. I spent days swearing at PITA because I knew deep down that it was going to go over the 30k. When I finished it (and finished swearing at PITA) it had gone over the 30k limit by a tiny amount and Ryan and Olly were already bugging me for their story. I sat down and decided to publish it on its own and not submit it for the call I had written it for. Then I needed a series name and publisher. Bailey (Bradford) helped with the series name and eXtasy Books accepted the story.

Ryan was mentioned in book 1 early on and I figured he would be one of the main characters in book 2, but Olly didn’t pop into my head until I was nearly done with book 1. He immediately demanded to be part of the series and to end up with Ryan, telling me that book 2 was going to be Ryan’s Wizard and he was going to be that wizard. I had been tossing with the idea that Ryan’s mate was going to be with the captured shifters but Olly wasn’t having it, Ryan was his. So I gave in and let him have his way (resisting would have just given me a headache).

Then PITA started pouting that he wasn’t getting enough attention so he made sure the ending to book 1 was a cliff hanger *sigh*

When I started writing Ryan’s Wizard, Ryan decided to be difficult. I had a release date, I had the deadline and no one was behaving! But eventually the story started moving forward and then more characters started talking to me and now I have twelve others sitting there looking at me, wanting their stories told while PITA stands there clapping his hands and looking at them while yelling “Puppies!” *rolls eyes* he keeps forgetting that not all of them are dogs…

About Ryan’s Wizard

Ryan's WizardAn alpha ends up with more than he bargained for when he finds his mate…his wizard mate.

After years of no contact, Oliver “Olly” Grey was finally able to reunite with his cousin Aiden. He’s surprised to find that Aiden now has a mate—a male, shifter mate—named Lex. And it’s Lex’s pack mates that Olly is there to help save. What he hadn’t expected was Lex’s brother Ryan.

Ryan Shepherd was happy to have found his brother Lex, and even happier to know that his brother was happily mated. But there is something about Aiden’s cousin Olly that Ryan doesn’t trust, especially when he also smells like the man currently holding his pack members captive. Yet that doesn’t stop Ryan from wanting to hold and comfort the man, and eventually he realizes why—Olly is his mate.

Now the four of them need to plan a rescue mission, but what happens when they run into the two men that had held Lex captive and those same men come to the cabin in the middle of the night?

An Excerpt from Ryan’s Wizard

Aiden burst out laughing and moved one hand to ruffle Olly’s hair.

“Hey!” Olly exclaimed as he pulled back in order to glare at Aiden, who just smiled bigger and pulled him back into his arms.

“I couldn’t resist,” Aiden said, the laughter evident in his voice.

“Yeah, whatever. Anyway, back to what I was saying, but hopefully without interruptions this time.” Olly looked pointedly at Ryan when he said that. Ryan seemed to be studying him intently, but didn’t utter a word.

Olly looked away and started talking again. “I know where the pack is, or at least, I know where a bunch of canine shifters are being held.”

“How do you know that they’re part of our pack?” Lex asked, sounding like he was trying to restrain his eagerness.

Olly turned to him. “Because I heard a few of the guards talk about how they captured a bunch of them together.”

“And why didn’t you get caught?” Ryan asked, anger in his voice.

“Because,” Olly paused, then sighed. “The house they’re being held in belongs to Walter.”

Aiden gasped and when Olly looked at him, he saw the horror that was on his face.

“How long has Walter had shifters imprisoned on his property?” Aiden asked, outrage in his voice.

“I don’t know for sure, but it would be a number of years.” Olly couldn’t face any of them as he said that.

“Who is this Walter?” Ryan growled.

Olly looked up at him, then looked away as he replied, “My father.”

Honorary Blogger Morticia Knight: Why BDSM?

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Why BDSM?

by Morticia Knight

I know there are many, many authors who can rightfully say what I’m about to say: I was writing BDSM a long time before Fifty Shades ever existed. I really only write M/M in any genre these days, but the majority of the themes I use are either outright BDSM, or have elements of it within the stories. I’ve had discussions over the years with other readers and writers in this genre and many of us have agreed that the primary attraction to it is the psychological elements.

Before I expand on that, I have to say that I love the sexual aspects just as much. The two combined together? Then it becomes next to impossible for me to write about anything else. But, back to the power of the mind. It’s been said that the most erotic part of our anatomy is our brain. I definitely agree. Being ‘in the mood’ is another way of saying ‘having the right mindset’. If you look at BDSM from a psychological standpoint, then it makes a lot of sense as to why it’s so attractive.

I do want to mention right here, that the mind games that can be played are also why it’s so vital that people play with trustworthy partners. That being said, experiencing the freedom to completely surrender to another person is very erotic. The power of having someone give themselves completely over to you is breathtaking. Both of those dynamics require an incredible amount of honesty and courage. The best sexual interactions are the ones where both partners let go and experience one another in the moment.

But why would anyone need BDSM for that? Couldn’t you just make that happen anyway? I don’t know about ‘making’ it happen, but sometimes there are reasons why people can’t let go – insecurities or fears that prevent complete fulfillment. BDSM can be a way for people to explore those hidden fears and work through them. Sometimes, it’s simply that vanilla sex doesn’t do it for a person. In the same way that I believe that people don’t choose their sexual orientation, I don’t believe that people choose what type of sexual activities they enjoy. I’ve read ‘reasons’ as to why people are inclined this way or that – but overall – I believe it is what it is.

Can past traumas or current fears be explored through BDSM? Of course, but that doesn’t always have to be the reason for it. In Hesitant Heart (The Hampton Road Club 1), it’s the 1920’s and Sam has escaped his abusive father and landed in Hollywood. He’s eighteen, innocent, and naïve. When the older, Dominant man Aaron rescues him from a disreputable bathhouse, he discovers something about Sam that the young man is horribly embarrassed to admit.

When Sam was younger, probably about twelve or so, he was playing Cowboys and Indians with a friend. When the friend tied him to a tree with some rope, Sam got excited, and when that friend ran his fingers along the ropes, pulling on them, Sam climaxed. It’s such a humiliating story for him, and he’s sure something must be wrong with him, but he trusts Aaron enough to confess it anyway. When Sam finds out that Aaron likes to tie men up for sex – well – it’s a match made in heaven.

During the time period in which this book is set, this never would have been something these characters could have discussed with any of their friends or family. Men who enjoyed such activities had a double dose of fear by not only having to hide that they were gay, but that they indulged in darker passions. Writing BDSM in this context is challenging, but I love it because the psychological themes are even more poignant in my opinion. All the men in the world of The Hampton Road Club are naturally pre-disposed to dealing with various psychological issues. But when they love, they do it with everything in them because it’s so much more precious when they have to fight that hard for it.

About Hesitant Heart

1Sam is a naïve young man who arrives in Hollywood to escape his brutal father. When the older, sophisticated Aaron rescues him, Sam discovers what it means to fully surrender himself to another.

Eighteen year-old Sam Cunningham is used to living with lots of secrets. He’s had to hide his true nature his entire life or else incur the wrath of his strict and abusive father. When he’s faced with a horrible ultimatum, he flees to Hollywood where he hopes he can escape the fate his father has planned for him.

Aaron Rubenstein is a wealthy and sophisticated man who loses himself in painting portraits of bound men to help stave off his loneliness and despair. Unable to find a lasting connection with anyone, he’s had to resort to paying lovers not only for their affections, but to be allowed to indulge in his darker passions. Aaron’s only respite is his nights at the Hampton Road sadomasochism club where he’s a respected Dominant.

Naïve and inexperienced in the ways men can please one another, Sam takes a job at a bathhouse where he first glimpses a beautiful older man. Aaron notices the sweet towel boy watching him with interest every time he patronizes the Temple of Eros bathhouse. A traumatic incident for the innocent towel boy triggers Aaron’s protective tendencies and he’s compelled to rescue the gentle Sam from the clutches of the Temple’s manager.

They embark on a journey together that teaches them both things about themselves that they never knew. As their bond deepens and Sam is trained for his first night at the Hampton Road Club, an unknown danger lurks. Will Sam’s father find him and destroy both men’s chance for true happiness together? Or will Aaron protect his boy and keep him for always?

She is currently working on the Sin City Uniforms Series and a BDSM spin-off to the Gin & Jazz series entitled The Hampton Road Club. A follow-up to Bryan and Aubrey’s story in Rockin’ the Alternative will be available in 2015.
