No longer angry but embarrassed, Ray made his way to the breakroom. When he entered, he saw that Cruella had a glass of carrot juice in front of them. Ray assumed it had protein powder in it, which was part of their new effort to get more nutrition.

“Hey. Is it okay if I sit down?” He wasn’t sure if he was about to be kicked out after a good dressing down.

Cruella gestured to the chair across from them. “Please.”

Ray gingerly took a seat then folded his hands and placed them on the table, waiting for a cue from Cruella.

Cruella took a sip of their drink then locked eyes with him. “So, I’ve had a moment to consider what just happened, and why I got so upset. The other night when you grabbed and moved me so I wasn’t facing Tucker anymore, I reacted to being manhandled. But it’s more than that.” They reached across the table and laid their hand across his clutched ones. “Baby, I understand the part where you want to protect me, I do. But I went through a huge battle to wrench my life back from Tucker, and that’s an accomplishment I’m incredibly proud of. Not you or anyone else gets to decide how I handle that going forward. That’s my battle, my challenge, if he should continue to appear in my life for whatever inane reason he might have.”

Cruella let him go then sat back. “Hon, you’ll never fully grasp what my relationship with Tucker did to me, how it affected who I am. How he kept watch over me night and day, dictated how I ate, who I saw, what I wore, told me who I was or wasn’t allowed to be. But that’s okay. I escaped his tyranny and I love me now. And I want you to be a part of my new life—however, that can’t happen if you keep trying to make my decisions and control my world for me. Even if those decisions are done from the kindness of your sweet, caring heart, I can’t have that anymore. Discussions are welcome, input encouraged, but conclusions are up to me.”

Shit. He hadn’t seen Cruella’s life with Tucker through their lens, only his own. “I can’t even begin to tell you how sorry I am. I never took the time to consider any of that. And I don’t view you as incapable, I really don’t.” He winced as he struggled to find the words to get his feelings across. “When I look back to a year ago, when you were first coming here and I’d see the bruises…” He swallowed past a lump in his throat. “I never said anything. I mean, yeah, the perfunctory ‘how are you’, but I never delved deeper.” He lifted his gaze. “I’m sorry I didn’t try to help you then when you really needed it.”

Cruella rose from the chair then came around the rectangular table to take a seat next to him. They wrapped their arms around him and he clutched them back, burying his face in their hair as a few pesky tears sneaked their way out.

“Shh, baby. It’s okay. I was quite skilled at hiding and pretending.” Cruella rubbed his back in soft circles. “I never expected anyone to come in and save me. I knew I’d fucked up.” They drew back then put two fingers under Ray’s chin, encouraging him to meet their gaze. “The relationship we’re building is something I’m very excited about. I’m learning so many things about myself I never knew existed and I’m sensing you’ll be by my side as I learn even more.” Cruella brushed his hair back. “Which brings me to something I’ve been wanting to seriously discuss with you.” The corner of their mouth quirked in a smile. “This wasn’t where I’d envisioned such a conversation taking place, but sometimes we can’t time things perfectly.”

Ray took a chance and gathered their hands in his own. “Sure, whatever you want.”

Cruella chuckled. “Off to a good start.”

Ray tilted his head. “How do you mean?”

“We’ve been playing around with domination, the bondage and so on.” Cruella traced the tip of one finger down the side of his face then along his jaw. “And I know how much you enjoy being my good boy.”

Heat rose under Ray’s skin. “Yeah. A lot.”

Cruella broke into a wide smile. “Then what do you think about making a more formal arrangement with me as your Top?”

Blurb:  The Lonely Ones by Bailey Bradford

Marshall’s all city, and Rex is all cowboy, so it’s no wonder sparks fly when they meet.

Marshall Evans never wanted to inherit his grandfather’s Thoroughbred horse ranch. He doesn’t know much about raising and training racehorses, and he knows even less about the man who left him what he sees as a burden. His grandfather wasn’t a nice man at all, and he left the ranch to Marshall more as a fuck you to the one person who did want the ranch, who had tried to buy it, and had put up with years of verbal and at times, physical abuse, only to have his home yanked out from under his feet. Rex Martinez had only ever had one home, and that was the ranch. Now he was about to lose it.

Marshall arrives in the small town of Erring, NM, only to be confronted by this silently furious man, and together, they’re going to have to work out what to do. The will stipulates that Marshall can’t sell the ranch to Rex, because Allen found out Rex was gay. Rex didn’t know he knew, but the old man had no idea about Marshall since Marshall hadn’t been raised anywhere near him.

It’s not as simple as selling the ranch, either. Marshall thinks it will be, but no. He can’t put Rex out of a home so easily.

‘Possibilities’ by T.A. Chase

Blurb:  When Dixon and Carson meet during a hurricane, neither imagined that moment would be the beginning of a new relationship.

Dixon White owns Billy’s Diner in Brevard County, Florida—right down the road from Patrick Air Force Base. He serves a lot of the servicemen and their families who live and work on the base and does it in honor of his brother who served as a SEAL until a motorcycle accident ended his life. When Dixon finds himself stuck in a broken down car just as a hurricane hits the area, he’s not sure how’s he going to get home.

Master Chief Sergeant Carson LaSalle is headed to the base when he drives by Billy’s Diner. He sees Dixon’s car there and stops, checking to see if everything is okay. He takes Dixon home, but can’t stop thinking about him.

After the hurricane blows through, both men meet again and the sparks fly. Possibilities open up for them to have a chance at finding love. They just have to be willing to try.

Review: This is a very short look at what amounts to a first date. Dixon has car trouble, Carson helps him. They start to date and have sex.

The dialog is very awkward, most of it feels like a big dump of information and the result is this possible beginning to a relationship. There are no specific hurdles, no sexual tension, nothing that makes this interesting at all.

I usually try to find something positive to say about everything I review but I do not really understand what this story was going for and the writing wasn’t great and by the end I was just scratching my head.

Overall Impression/Rating:  It wasn’t for me

‘Lonely Hearts and Yellow Ribbons’ by Stephani Hecht

Blurb:  Being apart from the one you love is the hardest thing to do, until you get them back to find they’ve changed…

PJ Ross Ervin is part of an elite force of recue men from the Air Force. Only the best of the best make it through the program and get to wear the maroon beret. As such, he is proud of what he does and is happy to serve his country. The one drawback is that it takes him away from his long-time lover, Aden. Thankfully Ross’ deployment is over and he’s coming home.

Aden is excited to see Ross. But he can’t help but notice that his partner is having trouble adjusting back into the civilian world. Plus, there is the looming danger that Ross could be deployed again at any time. Will Ross have to leave to serve his county once more? And if so, can the pair survive the separation yet again?

Review:   This is about a medic abroad who misses his partner. When he returns, there are some adjustments to be made for both men. Then he has to go back to the war.

The writing was fine, the character development was fine, but it felt like just a piece of a story and not an actual story.

Overall Impression/Rating:  It was okay/good

Venetian Skies’ by Morticia Knight

Blurb:  No one wants to lose a love that’s meant to be. Air Force test pilot, Chris Pierce, returns to Italy to discover that second chances are the sweetest.

They had a love that was the real thing, but Chris, an Air Force test pilot, returns to Aviano Air Base in Italy to discover that the only man he’s ever loved is still there. Yet wasn’t that why artist Brandon had dumped him? Because he didn’t want to be tied down to one place or one person?

Brandon made a huge mistake. It wasn’t until Chris transferred out of the local military base that he realizes what they had together was the real thing. Even though he’s never settled in one place for very long, he couldn’t bear to leave the town of Aviano where he and Chris were so happy together.

Chris unexpectedly returns and Brandon is devastated when Chris rejects him out of anger. Can’t Chris see how much Brandon has changed in the two years they’ve been apart?

Second chances are the sweetest and love that’s meant to be doesn’t die. But when a MiG fighter jet gone rogue shoots Chris down, will their second chance be taken away forever?

Review:   This was a very sweet story of second chances. Chris made some bad choices and hurt Brandon badly. If he forgives him will it work out this time and return to him the love of his life? Or will he get burned again?

It was pretty hot as well as very sweet and sentimental.

Overall Impression/Rating:  I really liked it

‘Search and Rescue’ by Jenna Byrnes

Blurb:  Two parajumpers freefall into a stealthy relationship before considering how quickly it might come crashing to an end.

Airman First Class Matthew Billings has almost completed a grueling two year training program on his way to becoming a Pararescueman in the Air Force Special Operations Unit. On a mission to rescue a child lost in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico, he meets Master Sergeant Drake Bogart, a man who is as infuriating as he is handsome. When Matt spots the child and Drake gets the credit, sparks fly, in more ways than one. But with graduation just a few days away, is their fledgling relationship over before it even gets started?

Review:   This was a very brief HFN-type of story about two guys meeting up and starting “something” even though odds are very low it will succeed.

I didn’t care for it.

Overall Impression/Rating:  It wasn’t for me

‘Live for the Day’ by Sarah Masters

Blurb:  Loving your best friend is easy. Telling him you do…well, that’s the hard part.

Michael and Steven grew up together—just them, no girls allowed. They’d always planned to join the military, but when it came time to sign up, Michael couldn’t do it. For years, Michael has worried every time Steven is out in the desert, risking his life to serve and protect. He dreads the day Steven won’t come home.

Steven has been through a dreadful ordeal on duty, and while in the hospital, he’s had time to think about what’s important in life. He misses Michael—needs to get back home to be with him—and he has something he wishes to say, something he’s held inside as far back as he can remember…

When the two men reunite, revelations are the name of the game. There is no question they’ve always loved each other, but now that they have the chance to express that love, will they?

Review:   This is a very sweet and nice GFY/OFY. What I liked about it was that it talked about the downside of the military in a way that seemed really realistic. I liked the before/after sense of the two boys fantasizing about what the military would be like and then the reality when it really hits home.

Overall Impression/Rating:  I really liked it

‘Lifetime Hitch’ by Megan Slayer

Blurb:  Sometimes the best laid plans are meant to be thrown way off course.

Hunter planned his life very well. He’s got his position in the Air National Guard, the family he’s always wanted and a life most people would love to have. Except he’s not happy. His friends all know his truths, but them knowing about his sexuality and him admitting it are two different things. Thankfully Ryder—his best friend—has always got his back.

Ryder has loved Hunter since they were in school. He wants to have more than Hunter’s back—he wants everything. Forcing his Guardsman to come out as a gay man wasn’t on his agenda, but Ryder isn’t above a bit of gentle nudging.

Will the things Hunter can’t control be his undoing, or will he accept who he is as well as the love he’s craved all of his life?

Review:  This was another OFY that did a nice job of showing how the military can be a boon and a burden. I liked the fact that Ryder was always himself and was never ashamed to ask for and take what he wanted and needed. He made Hunter own up to his own stuff and didn’t back down.

Overall Impression:   I really liked it

Honorary Blogger Morticia Knight: Why BDSM?

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Why BDSM?

by Morticia Knight

I know there are many, many authors who can rightfully say what I’m about to say: I was writing BDSM a long time before Fifty Shades ever existed. I really only write M/M in any genre these days, but the majority of the themes I use are either outright BDSM, or have elements of it within the stories. I’ve had discussions over the years with other readers and writers in this genre and many of us have agreed that the primary attraction to it is the psychological elements.

Before I expand on that, I have to say that I love the sexual aspects just as much. The two combined together? Then it becomes next to impossible for me to write about anything else. But, back to the power of the mind. It’s been said that the most erotic part of our anatomy is our brain. I definitely agree. Being ‘in the mood’ is another way of saying ‘having the right mindset’. If you look at BDSM from a psychological standpoint, then it makes a lot of sense as to why it’s so attractive.

I do want to mention right here, that the mind games that can be played are also why it’s so vital that people play with trustworthy partners. That being said, experiencing the freedom to completely surrender to another person is very erotic. The power of having someone give themselves completely over to you is breathtaking. Both of those dynamics require an incredible amount of honesty and courage. The best sexual interactions are the ones where both partners let go and experience one another in the moment.

But why would anyone need BDSM for that? Couldn’t you just make that happen anyway? I don’t know about ‘making’ it happen, but sometimes there are reasons why people can’t let go – insecurities or fears that prevent complete fulfillment. BDSM can be a way for people to explore those hidden fears and work through them. Sometimes, it’s simply that vanilla sex doesn’t do it for a person. In the same way that I believe that people don’t choose their sexual orientation, I don’t believe that people choose what type of sexual activities they enjoy. I’ve read ‘reasons’ as to why people are inclined this way or that – but overall – I believe it is what it is.

Can past traumas or current fears be explored through BDSM? Of course, but that doesn’t always have to be the reason for it. In Hesitant Heart (The Hampton Road Club 1), it’s the 1920’s and Sam has escaped his abusive father and landed in Hollywood. He’s eighteen, innocent, and naïve. When the older, Dominant man Aaron rescues him from a disreputable bathhouse, he discovers something about Sam that the young man is horribly embarrassed to admit.

When Sam was younger, probably about twelve or so, he was playing Cowboys and Indians with a friend. When the friend tied him to a tree with some rope, Sam got excited, and when that friend ran his fingers along the ropes, pulling on them, Sam climaxed. It’s such a humiliating story for him, and he’s sure something must be wrong with him, but he trusts Aaron enough to confess it anyway. When Sam finds out that Aaron likes to tie men up for sex – well – it’s a match made in heaven.

During the time period in which this book is set, this never would have been something these characters could have discussed with any of their friends or family. Men who enjoyed such activities had a double dose of fear by not only having to hide that they were gay, but that they indulged in darker passions. Writing BDSM in this context is challenging, but I love it because the psychological themes are even more poignant in my opinion. All the men in the world of The Hampton Road Club are naturally pre-disposed to dealing with various psychological issues. But when they love, they do it with everything in them because it’s so much more precious when they have to fight that hard for it.

Dangerous Wish by Morticia Knight: Excerpt + Giveaway!

An Excerpt from Dangerous Wish

By the time the taxi had arrived and taken them back to his place, Dan’s buzz had been severely damaged. His nervousness at what he was about to do had wormed its way in and taken over. Insecurity was a bitch.

He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans then took out his wallet to pay for the cab. Jared tried to hand him a ten dollar bill and Dan waved it away.

Jared pouted. “I want to pay my half.”

He’d said it in a playful way—the same teasing way that had kept Dan in an almost constant state of arousal all evening. Tucking his anxiety away for later, he kept his focus on the sweet gem sitting next to him.

“I’ve got this.”

In a move that he was sure surprised him more than Jared, he gave Jared a quick kiss on the lips. He shifted away quickly, not wanting Jared to see any conflict, not wanting him to guess just how inexperienced he really was as a lover. He needed the night to be perfect.

After exiting the car, they walked hand in hand down the short pathway that led to Dan’s apartment. It was really a fourplex, the units all lined up in a row, Dan’s on the far right. Stopping when they reached the entrance of his place, Dan fumbled at the door with his key, Jared behind him, wrapping his arms around Dan and nibbling at his earlobe. Jared made soft cooing noises and there was a gentle press against Dan’s ass, the feel of Jared’s hard shaft.

Jesus.

He wanted inside. Inside the apartment, inside of Jared. He’d dreamt of the moment when he would first fuck a guy for so long that it didn’t seem real that it was about to finally happen. The lock eventually cooperated—or maybe it was his fingers—but he was able to get them into the house, Jared still clinging to him, Dan stumbling and laughing.

As soon as the door had shut behind them, Dan twisted in Jared’s arms and their lips mashed together, tongues frantic and searching. There was no attempt made to be tender or loving – he was nothing but urgent need. They grasped and clung to one another, Dan gripping Jared’s hip with one hand. He used the other to do what he’d been desperate to do all evening—he twined his fingers in Jared’s thick, soft hair, reveling in the silken feel against his skin.

Fact #1 – EMT Jared Li is well respected as an outstanding medic amongst his peers in Mesa, Arizona.

blogger_bee_trans

About Dangerous Wish (Uniform Encounters #6)

Love is a dangerous emotion that EMT Jared won’t risk. But it looks as though a sweet and sexy National Guardsman is about to make him wish for that—and much more.

EMT Jared Li loves his job, his friends and clubbing. There’s nothing like a night of fun getting glammed up, throwing on some heels and shaking his ass to the latest Britney tune. Life is all about having a good time with as many hot guys as possible.

Dan Harrison has been in the National Guard for about six months and out for not much longer than that. At twenty-two, he’s somewhat innocent, a little shy and not interested in meaningless hook-ups. One night at a karaoke bar changes everything for him when his fellow Guardsman Joseph introduces him to his friend Jared. Dan’s never met anyone like the luscious twink who’s filled with so much life and laughter.

A night of passion shakes them to their very cores. Jared really likes Dan, but doesn’t want to get caught up in any type of exclusive thing. Dan wishes there could be more between them, but is willing just to be friends in order to remain near the androgynous stunner.

Hanging out strictly as friends proves to be almost impossible for them both. Not only does Jared continuously lust after the muscular soldier, but he’s also falling for the caring and compassionate man. Dan’s every sex fantasy stars Jared in one of his daring club outfits, but his heart is what really matters and it’s already been lost to Jared.

A traumatic event breaks down the barriers between them and gives them the chance to be together the way they both want. But after Dan is called up by the Guard to assist at a natural disaster, the same bravery that Jared admires in Dan might be the final thing that separates them forever.

Zach watched as the firefighters deployed a master stream gun on the ladder, and a deck gun from the engine. The team was able to blast what he knew to be almost a thousand gallons per minute of water to quell the inferno that continued to rage out of control.

A Medix van pulled up next to Zach and he recognised Terrence, an EMT he’d run into on several occasions working a domestic, car accident or similar situations. He dropped out of the van and ambled over to Zach.

“Zach, my man, why don’t you come have a seat with me over here?”

Terrence gestured to the back of the vehicle. Zach knew what he was up to.

“I’m fine, Terrence, really.” Suddenly, he couldn’t catch his breath, then fell into a coughing fit.

The medic came over and took his arm, leading him to the bumper of the van.

“Uh-huh. You’re doing great. Now behave yourself here while I check you out.”

Terrence pushed down lightly on his shoulder and Zach winced, groaning a little as he sat down. He was rewarded with a rather concerned expression from Terrence.

“You having problems with your shoulder?”

“He hurt it last week when he fell chasing a suspect.”

Zach glanced up to see what appeared to be a worried Daryl standing over him.

Oh, perfect. My hero.

Terrence grinned as he raised one eyebrow.

“I see. Was he chasing you around, Fire Marshal? You seem rather suspect.”

Zach waited for a scathing retort from Daryl, but he seemed to be making an attempt to temper his typically surly demeanour.

“Hmmph.” He regarded Zach. “How much of that smoke did you inhale? Were you ever inside the building?”

Zach pulled his eyebrows together. “I never went inside. I might have taken in a couple gulps of smoke when I dragged a guy away from the fire, I don’t know. I’ll be—“ He fell into another coughing fit.

“Goddammit,” Daryl muttered under his breath. “Terrence, don’t let him move until he has some O’s. And check out his shoulder.”

Terrence straightened up from where he’d been retrieving his jump kit and waved the small oxygen tank he held. “Um. Yeah. You do realise I went to school for this?”

Daryl’s sour puss look was back on his face. “Good. Then hopefully you’ll know what you’re doing. I have to go speak to the captain.”

About Secret Fire (Uniform Encounters #5)

Secret FirePolice officer Zach and Fire Marshal Daryl would be perfect together—if they would ever quit fighting long enough to find out. A devastating fire and the secret behind it almost keeps them from getting what they really need—each other.

Mesa police officer Zach is a fun-loving guy. Now that he’s hit the big three-oh, he’s looking to stop the hook-up train and find someone he can get serious about. When a mutual friend suggests Fire Marshal Daryl, Zach assumes he must be joking. The surly marshal has given cranky a new meaning. It’s unfortunate, though, since he is one fine-looking man.

Daryl has sworn off relationships ever since he caught his ex-partner cheating. He’s always taken everything in life seriously—from jobs to relationships—and is afraid he might be alone in that regard. Certain he can’t risk love again, he panics when he sees his secret crush Zach approaching him at a police versus firemen softball game. He’s nervous, as he is socially challenged with a tendency to blurt out the wrong things. It gets worse when he realises their shared buddy gave Zach a push. He assumes that Zach is only talking to him out of pity.

Zach has been pissed off at Daryl ever since they got into a verbal sparring match at the park. Yet, when Daryl comes to his aid during an explosive fire, Zach wonders what secrets might be hidden beneath the layers Daryl has built to protect himself from the world—and love. A night of passion turns into the possibility of something more as they struggle to find their way to one another. But all of that is threatened when there is a devastating fire that causes many people to lose their lives. As they work together to uncover the truth, someone thinks they’ve asked too many questions—and plans to stop them before they can ask any more.

About Morticia Knight

M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys a good saucy tale – after all, who doesn’t? Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi setting. One of her passions is bringing people’s fantasies to life on the page, because life is too short for even one boring moment. Her stories are volcanic in heat, deep in emotion, and sprinkled with doses of humor.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

She is currently working on the Gin & Jazz series about the glitz and glamour of 1920’s Hollywood and additional installments of the Uniform Encounters series, with a new series about those luscious men in uniform coming out later this year.
