Shift it with Jackie Nacht

First I’d like to thank Blogger Girls for having me here today. Thank you!

I’m extremely excited to introduce you all to Moon Compound.

I knew when I started writing that I wanted to write a shifter series. I love paranormal and have always been fascinated by it. However, I also knew that if I didn’t bring something new to the table so to speak, that the series as a whole would be boring.

Therefore, I analyzed the procedure of the shift, what packs did for the individual and well…asked myself a lot of questions. Then I took my answers up a notch and threw a couple of rules out the window. I love breaking rules. LOL

In Moon Compound series, shifters take years to control their shift, hence the reason why they are locked up. Packs send their pre-transition twenty-two year olds to go live at the compound. It’s a little cross between a prison, since they are locked up on the full moon, and a home.  The pre-shifters will live there until they get control of their shift and with some shifters, it can take quite a few years. Medical staff is on hand to help them afterward, since shifts are extremely painful.

The other part of Moon Compound is that while it focuses strongly on a mated pair in each book, there is an underlying plot that carries from book to book. Each book reveals more to the plot and opens up the world.  That world involves their enemies, Hellhounds.

For those that have read some of my books, this is very different to my typical sweet and light writing. Moon Compound had a dark and gritty edge to it that flows throughout the series. My goal is to continue to surprise readers and give them a wild ride.

Again, thank you Blogger Girls for having me here today. Have a great week everyone. Hugs!

About Jackie:

Short, sexy and sweet—where a little love goes a long way.

That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. I was introduced to M/M Romance through my sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, I thought it was time to put my own stories on paper. I began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after…and sometimes more than one, in the case of my YA Fork in the Road series, which has interactive endings.

Thinking back to my own book addiction, where there were many nights I stayed up way too late so I could read just one more chapter—yeah, right—I decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students, or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and at my webpage: www.jackienacht.com.

Honorary Blogger Mia Kerick: “Please eSign” spells RELIEF!!! + Giveaway

Honorary Blogger - Mia Kerick

Heather C: First, I want to thank Ms. Mia Kerick for joining us here at TBG today and sharing with us a bit about some of the tortures of becoming a writer.  Also, Mia has a newly released young adult novel that I totally recommend titled The Red Sheet.  While the book deals with the heavy topic of bullying, the author still lets her humorous side shine through…you can see a little evidence of that here.  Enjoy!

“Please eSign” spells RELIEF!!!

by Mia Kerick

Many people have asked me how it feels to receive an acceptance letter for one of my story submissions. And I should know as I have received, um, let’s see…(counting on fingers—never been good with numbers) nine (including a short story) acceptances from Dreamspinner Press/Harmony Ink Press in the past year and a half.

“Aren’t you so excited, Mia?”
“You must be on Cloud Nine!”
“I’ll bet you’re gonna celebrate!”
“How does it feel, Mia, to receive an acceptance for a story submission?”

Relief. It feels like relief.

Let me explain how I get to the point of experiencing relief rather than joy at a story acceptance…

To start, I write the book. This is the easy part…the fun part. Occasionally I strap a family member into a kitchen chair with bungee cords and make him (or her) listen to certain carefully selected chapters. Yeah, the “strap into a chair” part is necessary as we are a very busy family and no one has time to listen to “Mom’s love stories.”

I gauge his (or her) reactions. I have this part down to a science. I know that an eye roll equals, “that was cute”.  When a family member is biting down hard on their bottom lip while I read, I realize that the content is, in some way, over the top. Simple head shaking means B-O-R-I-N-G. But wide eyes is what I’m going for. Wide eyes indicate that despite his desire to run and hide, he is finding what I am reading interesting.

I feel relief…that is, if I can induce a glassy, wide-eyed look.

Self-editing comes next. And let me tell you, I am very hard on myself.  If my computer cooperates and I get this step finished without losing large sections of my manuscript…there it is again—RELIEF!!

Any author knows the relief I feel after the synopsis is completed. Indescribable.

Moving on to…

Questioning myself as an author, as a mother, and in general, questioning my reason for existing. This step always comes before I submit a story. And predictably, when I have decided that I am a worthwhile human being, after all, I experience palpable relief.

Submission. The “I’m gonna lose my lunch” feeling. The sweating. The praying. But once I press the send button, there is a measurable degree of relief…

UNTIL…

I rethink my story from top to bottom. The voice comes into question… the prologue…the way I started chapter one…the way I ended chapter thirty-two.

Is it sufficiently compelling? Should it have been YA instead of adult?

This part is pure torture because I soon move on to, what will my publishers think if I rewrite and resubmit? Will they think I’m overly compulsive? Will they know for certain I am overly compulsive?

Nonetheless, I have written more than one apologetic letters to my publisher accompanied by rewritten novels.  (They have accepted my rewritten work quite graciously.)

But believe me, once I re-submit, the relief I feel is lip-bitingly over the top.

Nothing can bother me now. I have no need for relief anymore. I am made of steel. My nerves—they are strong. They can handle the waiting… and the waiting… the compulsive checking of emails. (The knowing that AT THIS VERY MOMENT my work is being judged….)

Waiting for a response to my submission is a piece of cake, really.

I don’t check my emails 500 times per day. Really, I don’t.

Okay. Maybe I do…

Truth? Waiting for a response to a submission has led me into mild depressions.

And so, when I see this:

Thank you for your submission. We are interested in publishing…

AAAHHHHH!!!!! R-E-L-I-E-F!!!!!

That’s all. Not joy. Not elation.

Simple relief.

Check out The Red Sheet. Yes, I endured the above torturous process to bring this story to publication. I will experience relief once again if it sells.

About The Red Sheet

One October morning, high school junior Bryan Dennison wakes up a different person—helpful, generous, and chivalrous—a person whose new admirable qualities he doesn’t recognize. Stranger still is the urge to tie a red sheet around his neck like a cape.
Bryan soon realizes this compulsion to wear a red cape is accompanied by more unusual behavior. He can’t hold back from retrieving kittens from tall trees, helping little old ladies cross busy streets, and defending innocence anywhere he finds it.
Shockingly, at school, he realizes he used to be a bully. He’s attracted to the former victim of his bullying, Scott Beckett, though he has no memory of Scott from before “the change.” Where he’d been lazy in academics, overly aggressive in sports, and socially insecure, he’s a new person. And although he can recall behaving egotistically, he cannot remember his motivations.
Everyone, from his mother to his teachers to his “superjock” former pals, is shocked by his dramatic transformation. However, Scott Beckett is not impressed by Bryan’s newfound virtue. And convincing Scott he’s genuinely changed and improved, hopefully gaining Scott’s trust and maybe even his love, becomes Bryan’s obsession.

Excerpt

“Okay, everybody, discussion time is over. Please pass your papers forward—I’m very excited to read about your dreams and to check out what your partners found interesting enough to comment on.” I collected his paper and handed it, together with mine, to the girl in front of me. Meanwhile, Scott chewed on his bottom lip, looking a bit concerned, probably because the edit he had given me consisted of only one hastily scribbled word. And that one word was a word we weren’t even supposed to use at school.

“So what do you say about me and you going to the game, Scott?”

And for the first time since the change had happened, his expression softened. He leaned in toward me, and said softly, “I can’t go, Bryan. I can’t ever go anywhere with you.”

I spoke quietly back to him. “But I said I was sorry—for everything.”

“You keep saying that you can’t remember our friendship, and that all you know of our relationship is from what you dream. Oh, and that you can’t remember what you and your friends did to me that night. But Bryan, maybe you can’t remember, but I just can’t forget—not any of it—because it hurts way too fucking much.”

“I… I just can’t…. I can’t….” I had no idea what I was trying to say.

“What you just can’t do is tell me the truth. You just can’t look me in the eyes, admit to remembering it all, and say you acted like a complete dickhead.”

Miss Libby’s voice sliced through Scott’s accusation. “Class is dismissed. Don’t forget to pick up tonight’s journal topic from off the desk by the door.”

I followed him with my eyes as he got up, grabbed his backpack, and headed toward the door. And although his words had stung, I couldn’t help but feel like we’d somehow taken a step forward. Yeah, Scott had rejected me. And no, he didn’t believe a word I said. But he had spoken to me for the first time in plain words.

In honest words.

As I passed by Miss Libby’s desk, she held up the paper on which I had written about my dream, and pointed to Scott’s nasty single-word edit.

“How are things, Bryan? Are you making any progress in the area you mentioned to me?”

“It’s very slow going, Miss Libby.” I stopped right in front of her desk. “But I’m not gonna give up.”

And that’s when she smiled at me in the way I’d recently started yearning for—like she knew I was putting forth my very best in this effort to make amends. And I really was.

About Mia

MiaKerickMia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

My themes I always write about: Sweetness. Unconventional love, tortured/damaged heroes- only love can save them.

Honorary Blogger Sherilee Gray: The Call – I’m Not Crazy, I’m a Writer!

The Call – I’m Not Crazy, I’m a Writer!

by Sherilee Gray

So the fabulous Jen here at The Blogger Girls, invited me to share a little about myself and my journey to that wondrous, and what often feels like the most seriously allusive thing in the world, the publishing contract!

My journey, like most, started with a love of reading. The first romance I ever read, given to me by my awesome, romance loving sister, was a hot little novella by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I loved it. I devoured it and went back for more. It only took that one story and I was completely hooked on romance.

But eventually, after years of dreaming up my own stories and characters, I knew I wanted more. I wanted to write my own stories. I finally decided to try it for myself. Let’s just say my first writing attempts were not great, and after entering a competition with my not so shiny new novel, I discovered I had a lot to learn about the craft of writing. So first I had to go back to basics, and I mean basics. It’s been a long road from that first crappy ms to writing something an actual publisher thought was good enough to publish. But in all that time I never gave up, I never stopped working towards my goal.

When I received an email from Kate Cuthbert at Escape Publishing, close to five years after my first fumbled writing attempts, to say she wanted my story, I burst into tears. I’m lucky enough to have a supportive family who for some crazy reason, had faith in me and believed I could achieve my dream. And I’m happy to say it paid off! My first novella, Lone Wolf’s Captive, released today, March 1st!

LONE WOLF’S CAPTIVE

He let her father chase him off once, but this time nothing is getting in his way.

Fletcher Stone was forced out of the pack life, and now he makes his living as a hired thug, living day-to-day without honour or commitments. Shame over his choices and his lifestyle keep him from returning to the pack to claim Delaney — the woman who holds his heart. But when a rival pack hires him to kidnap her, Fletcher takes his chance. Now he must convince her that he never wanted to leave…and reveal a betrayal that will break her heart.

Delaney Jones has spent the last five years convinced the man she loves is dead. Nothing else would keep him from her. So when Fletcher shows up, whole, healthy, and very much alive, she’s devastated — and pissed off. He broke her heart once and he’s never going to get close enough to do it again.

Honorary Blogger Heidi Cullinan – Writing Las Vegas + Giveaway

TBG: Today’s Honorary Blogger Girl is no other than the amazing Heidi Cullinan! Yay! We are excited to have her because we just adore her to pieces. As the release date for her novel, Double Blind, is next week (March 4th), she’s going to talk a little about her adventures in writing about Las Vegas. Enjoy!

Writing Las Vegas

by Heidi Cullinan

In 2011, I was interviewed for an article in Canada’s Globe and Mail, and one of the first questions was, “How long have you lived in Las Vegas?” It took a full five minutes to get the reporter to believe me when I said I’ve barely been there.

Sad as that statement is, it’s very true. I’ve been to Las Vegas exactly twice. Once in 1980 on a family trip to California. We drove through the Strip, and then my mother and sister got violently ill and we had to stop at a stranger’s house to get help. The other time was in 2009 on the way home from our California trip. We arrived at 10PM, checked into our room, rode to the top of the Stratosphere, took a cab ride down the Strip, went to bed, went to the buffet for breakfast and got back on the road home.

In two trips I haven’t managed a full day there collectively, and I think I have at best seven hours of consciousness in the city to this day. Despite this deficiency, I’ve written two novels and a novella set in the city.

When I set out to write Double Blind, my first novel set there, it was September 2009. I tried like crazy to get there in person, conniving in every conceivable way to take even a weekend trip. It was impossible on so many levels—health, family, money. Dan, who is always very game to let me ride the crazy to an objective, said, “Heidi, it’s just not going to happen.” Yet I still had to write this novel, which means I had to learn Las Vegas.  (I had to learn poker too, but that’s another blog post entirely.)

As I intended to write the novel as a NaNoWriMo novel, I couldn’t start until November 1, and so I used the time before my start to research like crazy. I think I’ve watched every movie ever set in Las Vegas. I’ve watched probably forty hours of documentary footage about the city, read many, many books. If there was a video of it on YouTube, I watched it.  I took virtual tours of the town on Google Maps, looked at real estate listings for houses. If you dropped me in that city, I think I could reasonably get around, I know it so well.

Hands down, though, my favorite bit of research for Double Blind was the documentary called Vegas: The City the Mob Made. Dan found it in a bargain bin at Walmart, and we watched it together over the course of the week. Four times as long as it has a right to be, it’s possibly the best argument for an editor I’ve ever seen in my life. We still joke around the house about “the lucrative skim,” a phrase they repeated so often if you watched this as a drinking game you’d be completely hammered before you left episode one. (There are ten. Ten episodes!) We still speak fondly of it, in fact, and talk about watching it again just to laugh. I did learn a lot from the series, but man.

Tough Love features Vegas heavily once again, with about half the novel set there, but this time I didn’t even attempt to visit. I keep thinking I want to go there someday, though. Maybe someday we’ll all go together for a convention or even just because Vegas sounds like fun.

Sadly, I have to warn you—I’m not half as good at poker as Randy, because I’m as risk-averse with money as Sam, and holy crapmonkeys, just thinking about the top of the Stratosphere makes me weak in the knees. But if somebody finds out Herod’s really exists? I’m there. I’m so there.

Honorary Blogger Caitlin Ricci – A Talk with Caitlin Ricci + Giveaway!

The Blogger Girls: Hear yee, hear yee! Today we are happy to have Caitlin Ricci on TBG who’d like to share a little of her inspiration with our lovely viewers. Everyone give her a warm welcome and don’t forget to check out the giveaway at the bottom! Take it away, Caitlin!

blogger_bee_trans

Hello! Thank you for stopping by and wanting to spend a little time with me, Caitlin Ricci. Today I wanted to talk about where my inspiration comes from when I’m writing a book.

I love music even though I can’t play anything, barely passed when we had to play the recorder in class, and can’t sing a single note correctly. Music gets me into the right mindset for the story and I’m one of those people that can listen to a single song for a month straight while I write in order to finish a novel. I just did it with another story where I listened to nothing by Counting Stars by OneRepublic.

I have plenty of ideas and the characters are always talking and I haven’t always been this way but once I find that song that clicks with me and with the story its hard to listen to anything else. This is because nothing else quite makes the story work the same. For Rescuing Jack that song was Elements by Lindsey Stirling. I enjoy a lot of her work and many of my short stories have been inspired by her songs but for this novel Elements clicked the most. Generally the songs I listen to are instrumental but they aren’t usually classical because the flow often isn’t the same. Apocalyptica is a decent example of this idea too and they are my go to band to listen to when I’m fleshing out ideas.

Instrumental music works for me more than songs with words in them because sometimes I start writing out what the people are saying. It’s also why I can’t have the TV on while I write. I doubt anyone wants to read an episode of Judge Judy in the middle of one of my books but it will probably happen if the TV is on and I’m trying to do anything creative.

Editing is completely opposite. I need the words because if I don’t have it I can’t be objective and analytical about my story and just start reading for pleasure instead of doing what I’m supposed to be doing. Counting Stars doesn’t fit into that idea but for some reason it worked last month while I was writing a book.

Thank you for hanging out with me today. My new novel, Rescuing Jack, comes out from Dreamspinner Press today, February 7th. I’m excited because this is my first novel with them but also because these characters are ones that really stood up and grabbed my attention right away. I knew I had to write about them and in a short amount of time this novel came to be.

I’d love to know what you thought of it. Feel free to email me at authorcaitlinricci@gmail.com or visit me online at www.caitlinricci.com. blogger_bee_trans

Like Nikyta, she has an obsession with anything that Mary Calmes happens to write. So, when we asked Laura to be our Honorary Blogger Girl for the day and write a recipe review for one of her favorite MC books, she thankfully agreed! Her reviews have a unique flare that mixes a review with a recipe, and wine, specific to the story. We enjoy her creations as much for the review as for the tasty recipes she offers and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have! Take it away, Laura! Continue reading
