Writing in Alternating POV’s

by Chris T. Kat

Hello, I’m Chris T. Kat, visiting The Blogger Girls again. 🙂 I’m here to talk about my new release, Despite the Odds (Odds Are: Book One). Despite the Odds is the first book in the Odds Are series, and was published by Dreamspinner Press on June 3rd.

Usually, when I start a new story, I know the POV I want to use. Most of the time, it’s first person or third person limited because these are the POV’s I feel most comfortable in. Despite the Odds started in first person, but after the first chapter I realized the story wouldn’t work for me. I needed to show the thought process of Michael and Joshua. I’ve written a couple shorter pieces in alternating POV’s, but found them hard to pull off. Therefore, Despite the Odds is my first published work in that style.

As I worked on this story, I quickly realized a few things:

  • My writing is pretty straightforward, so I needed to do the same here. The result is that I used a simple approach. The first chapter is from Michael’s POV, the next from Joshua’s POV, and that’s how it goes throughout the book.
  • I’ve read books with alternating POV’s and absolutely hated when the same scenes were recapped from a different POV. In Despite the Odds, I avoided recapping as much as possible, and tried my best to have each scene advance the story.
  • The characters need to have distinctive voices, otherwise they just flow into each other and it gets confusing. I hope I managed this. For example: Michael often puts his foot in his mouth, because he blurts out what he thinks.

Do you care about POV at all? Is there one you prefer?

About Despite the Odds

25479966Never judge a book by its cover.

Michael Campbell can’t hold a job for more than a few days. He’s lucky his foreman is giving him another chance with the solar panel project at a primary school in Atlantic City. When he spies a man walking strangely in front of the school, Michael laughs, assuming he’s drunk or high. Little does he realize that Joshua Stone, a teaching assistant, has cerebral palsy, and he’s having a bad muscle control day. Taking a tumble right in front of the handsome construction worker is just his luck.

When Michael learns the truth, he feels badly for his cruel behavior. He offers to give Joshua—and his tricycle, the Racing Rhonda—a lift. Joshua accepts the help, and suddenly there’s a gorgeous man breezing into his life, turning his world upside down. But Michael has more issues than his inability to hold down a job, and neither man is sure if they’ll be able to overcome their fears in order to be together.

An Excerpt from Despite the Odds

At first, the walking went fine. The occasional lurch to his weak left side, but nothing out of the ordinary. When he stepped out of the cool school building, the heat was scorching. The construction workers had already left a while ago. Only the guy who’d laughed at him was still there, busy putting away tools. Joshua stared straight ahead, even though he could feel the guy’s gaze bore into his back. Stupid prick!

Why did all the good-looking guys have to be such assholes? Not that he’d ever stood a chance with such a hunky guy—or anyone really—but why did these guys have to make fun of him? They already had the looks and a fantastic, fully functioning body, so why did they have to sneer at his grotesque figure?

Joshua paused at a bench, clutching the edges with his hands. His heart thundered in his rib cage while sweat ran down his back in small rivulets. Why was he so out of it? That wasn’t normal. He gulped in more of the hot air and took in his surroundings. Only a couple cars stood in the school’s parking lot. His trike gleamed in the sun like a small, silvery stone. Damn, the saddle would be flaming hot. Next time, he’d just drive it onto the walkway.

When he glanced toward the guy who’d mocked him, he couldn’t help but notice the way the shirt clung to his heavily muscled body. The jeans hugged his butt and long limbs like a second skin. Joshua’s gaze darted away as he licked his bottom lip. Fine, the guy was hot.

With new resolution, he pushed himself off the bench, staggered the first couple of steps, and then trudged along the walkway toward his trike. Fantasizing would get him nowhere other than in a world of trouble, so why bother? He had his porn collection at home, and that’s all he’d ever have.

Balling his hands into fists, Joshua fought against the anger coiling inside him, the urge to scream or cry at the unfairness of it all.

His steps faltered as exhaustion took its toll on him. His left side felt like unwanted ballast he had to drag behind him. Why did his body have to be like this?

He coughed to dislodge the lump in his throat. Self-pity wouldn’t get him anywhere either. At least not closer to his trike and his home. He’d stop by the bakery, get some of his favorite treats. Later he’d curl up in bed with one of his favorite romances. Since that would be the only way he’d ever experience romance….

Tai Chi: Martial Arts or Gentle Exercise?

by Chris T. Kat

Hello, I’m Chris T. Kat, visiting the lovely Blogger Girls again. 🙂 I’m here to talk about my new release, Swordplay (A Jeff Woods Mystery). Swordplay is the third and last book in the Jeff Woods Mysteries series, and was published by Dreamspinner Press on December 22nd.

In Attachment Strings and Sacrifices, the first two books in the Jeff Woods Mystery series, Jeff, his boyfriend Alex, and Alex’s brother Sean lived in Atlantic City. In Swordplay, the whole family moved to Washington DC. Alex is still unemployed, and to occupy his time he starts tai chi lessons.

Jeff is all for Alex having fun, especially if it keeps him from another hair-rising escapade like in Sacrifices, but he’s not so sure about tai chi. Jeff considers tai chi to be for elderly people to relax, a sort of gentle exercise. It took him a while to grasp the concept of tai chi as a martial arts sport. Alex had to explain this to him—quite often. In Swordplay, Alex and his teacher train in Chen style.  Most modern styles, often referred to as Yang style, show slow, soft moves, whereas Chen style also include fast and explosive moves (plus the use of various weapons). Here are two short video (second one is performed with a sword):

http://youtu.be/WoHF2Pc7s-M

http://youtu.be/DnEUQ7Dz22w

I don’t do tai chi myself, but my husband does, and I know more of tai chi and its principles than I ever wanted to know. On the other hand, it’s a really stunning sight when he trains and wields his sword, so I’m all for enabling him to pursue this hobby. 😉 After watching him numerous times, I knew I needed someone who exercised tai chi in one of my next books, plus I really wanted a sword to make an appearance, and voilà! There you have Swordplay.

Do you have a hobby that’s important to you? How did you find it?

About Swordplay

SwordplayLGAfter leaving his dream job as an Atlantic City detective, Jeff Woods has moved to Washington DC with his life partner, Alex Fisher, and Alex’s disabled little brother Sean. Parker Trenkins, Jeff’s ex-partner on the force, has made the move as well, along with his significant other David. Jeff and Parker partner up once again, but in a new way, as owners of their own detective agency.

Life is difficult at the best of times. Sean loses sight in one of his eyes, a direct result of being pushed into the Atlantic by a homicidal maniac a year ago. In his struggle to deal with everything, a restless Alex enrolls in tai chi classes at a nearby school.

As it happens, a murder case Jeff and Parker take involves the head of that very tai chi school, Charles Cooper. Cooper is a suspect in the murder of a financial corporation official. He appears to have motive. Jeff and Parker’s investigation arouses the real killer’s interest, and if they don’t uncover his identity soon, it may be too late for them.

An Excerpt from Swordplay

As I walked to the door leading to our apartment, the soft chimes of calm Chinese music filtered through. I cautiously pulled the door open and stuck my head inside.

Alex had cleared the space in the living room so he could exercise. He was still wearing his blond hair long since we’d both had realized we liked it this way best. Well, I’d been a bit dense and only realized it after a haircut a couple of months ago.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching him. He was wearing gray sweatpants, soft shoes, and nothing else. Perspiration was visible on his upper body. He moved in short but graceful steps accompanied by hand gestures. Not for the first time, it struck me how agile he was.

At first I hadn’t been sure why he had to take tai chi lessons instead of karate or taekwondo.. I’d believed tai chi to be for elderly people to relax, a sort of gentle exercise. Alex had explained to me the various tai chi styles. He was training in Chen style, the source for all other tai chi styles. Most modern styles, often referred to as Yang style, showed slow, soft moves, whereas Chen style also included fast and explosive moves—I really liked the cannon fist—and the use of various weapons. But as Alex had also told me, “ten thousands forms and one principle,” so whatever style chosen, it was all good.

My mouth went dry when he pushed his hands out, the ropy muscles on his arms showing off his power. The sweatpants bulged around his knees when he made a couple of fast-moving steps, and he twisted where I could admire his chest and abdomen. A moment later, his lips curved upward, and he asked, “What are you doing here? Other than drooling all over me?”

I pushed off, kicked the door shut, and advanced on him. “I’m not drooling.”

“Oh, you were. Only thing missing was your panting.”

“Feeling cheeky this morning?” I asked.

I grabbed his hips and kissed him hard. He laughed and scurried away. I shucked my jacket and threw it on the sofa. Alex picked up a towel and dried himself off, all the while watching me. Hunger lurked in his dark eyes.

Sure, I was here to talk to him about Cooper, but right now my cock demanded action and overruled my brain. I advanced on him, and Alex met me halfway. We collided, and both of us grappled for a secure hold on the other. I slid my hands into his hair, yanking his head back so I could pepper his throat with sharp nips and firm kisses.

Alex grasped my shirt, and he let out those delicious sounds of arousal that always brought my cock to full erection within seconds. It was no different this time. I ground my crotch against his, eliciting a shudder from him.

When I looked at his face again, his eyes were closed and his lips parted. I slipped my tongue into his mouth. I tasted a mix of coffee and chocolate. “White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino?”

Alex’s eyes fluttered open, and he smiled sheepishly. “I needed something sweet this morning.”

With gentle hands, I cupped his face and pressed a kiss on the tip of his nose. I understood. Anything to take his mind off Sean’s impending sight loss, even if it was just a drink. He dug tighter into my shirt, crumpling it, at the same time trying to pull me closer to him.

“Something else you need?”

“You,” he replied without hesitation.

Honorary Blogger Chris T. Kat: A Different End + Giveaway!

A Different End

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks very much to The Blogger Girls for having me back on their blog! Dreamspinner Press published my new release, Tidal Change, on September 17th. Tidal Change is a shape-shifter story but it also has fantasy/fairy tale elements because the main character, Marty, is a merman.

When I started writing—which seems like a really long time ago nowadays—I never cut whole scenes from my stories. Even when I knew certain scenes didn’t move the plot, or were basically fillers, I couldn’t cut them. Sure, I’d cut sentences, or even a paragraph here or there, but never as much as a page.

After going through the editing process several times, I understand better why some scenes just don’t do a thing for the story, but that doesn’t mean I’m more likely to cut whole scenes. Tidal Change had a whole different ending in the first manuscript version. Right until my two beta-readers, Julie Lynn Hayes and Tali Spencer, wondered why I chose to end the story like I did. Wouldn’t a different end make much more sense? Not giving away how I changed the actual story, but after much grumbling, I had to agree with my betas opinions. With a heavy heart, I re-wrote the end, though I kept the original part. Please read the deleted scene below if you’re interested.

Readers, have you read books where you wished the end would’ve been different? Authors, how often have you changed the end of your books?

About Tidal Change

Tidal Change by Chris T. Kat eBookSomething draws history teacher Rick Grady across the school hall to German teacher Marty Lindson. Maybe it’s their shared love of the ocean. Maybe it’s just that Marty is so hot, but maybe it’s something more—something mysterious. All Rick knows is that every time he gets close, Marty pulls away. After another cancelled date, Rick goes to Marty’s apartment to demand an explanation. And what Rick discovers blows his mind.

The ocean calls to Marty because he’s a merman. He’s been afraid to get close to Rick, not just to keep his world a secret, but because Rick is his mate. And to claim his mate would change everything about Marty. No matter how much he loves Rick, he doesn’t know if he’s ready to alter his entire life.

Deleted End Scene

Rick sipped his coffee, then patted Marty’s naked ass. “Come on, little fishy, either hop into the water or get back into your clothes. You don’t need to get sick.”

Shaking his head, Marty closed his eyes. He was still smiling when he re-opened them. Rick trailed his free hand along the shimmering scales on Marty’s tail. Marty moved into the touch, droning a contented hum. He lifted his head to receive another kiss from Rick, then pushed himself off the boulder and vanished into the dark sea.

Rick huddled deeper into his blanket while he sipped his coffee and watched Marty swim. Only a sliver of moonlight illuminated Marty’s nightly adventures, causing Rick to strain his eyes more than he liked.

Marty swam for a while, occasionally lobtailing his fluke hard on the water surface, the hard smacking noises echoing like explosions. Marty emitted trills and thrums, something Rick had become accustomed to, but this time it was different. At first he frowned, unsure why the hairs on the nape of his neck reared up.

Something answered Marty’s call—something much bigger. Rick’s heart skipped a few beats, when he discovered a huge fluke breaching the surface, very close to Marty. A whale.

Rick’s eyes widened. A huge whale surfaced next to Marty, who seemed tiny and fragile next to the large animal. The whale thumped his fin onto the surface, creating a huge wave that pressed Marty underneath the water. Rick jolted upright, his mug clattering onto the boulder and splintering into pieces. He scanned the sea for Marty while his heart thundered away.

Rick’s knees buckled in relief when Marty’s head appeared above the surface again. He expected Marty to swim back to him as fast as he could. He should have known Marty’s tendency to do things his own way would come to pass in this situation, but he still gasped when Marty leaped high into the air, his laughter carrying over to Rick.

Usually, Rick loved watching Marty jump, but the gigantic animal next to Marty tarnished his enjoyment into non-existence. He flapped his hands in the hope of drawing Marty’s attention. Either Marty didn’t see him, or he was ignoring Rick’s frenzied waving.

Rick tried again and again to catch Marty’s eye, but it didn’t help. He spent the next hour rooted to the spot, staring wide-eyed and dry-mouthed at the spectacle at sea. In a weak moment, he admitted to himself how fascinating it was to watch Marty and the whale, but mostly he feared for Marty’s safety and life. The huge animal could easily knock Marty out. What would happen in this case? Would Marty drown?

“Oh, you are so going to get a piece of my mind!” Rick muttered to himself.

After another half an hour, just about when Rick’s thighs began to cramp, Marty tired of playing with his new friend and swam toward Rick. The whale gave a short trill, then breached the water surface and threw himself backward, splashing water in huge waves. Rick jumped and almost lost his footing on the slippery boulder.

Marty jumped out of the sea, a dazzling smile on his face as he looked up at Rick. He exuded so much happiness and enthusiasm that Rick’s fear evaporated in an instant. He all but fell on his butt and pulled Marty’s dripping frame into in a crushing embrace.

Marty’s voice was muffled because he rambled into the folds of Rick’s blanket, “Wow! Did you see that? I was eye to eye with a blue whale! A real giant! I’ve never been that close to one of them before. Oh, maybe I’ll meet this one again! That would be fantastic, don’t you think?”

Marty’s excitement was almost contagious. Still, Rick couldn’t shake off the trepidation from the last couple of hours. Holding Marty’s naked body against his didn’t help him focus either. In a hoarse voice, Rick said, “If that… monster ever shows up again here, I’ll put you on a leash.”

Marty pulled away from Rick and tilted his head sideways, clearly puzzled by Rick’s choice of words. “Why? It was fun! Hey, you know what? Next time you could come with me. If you’re not comfortable in merman form, we could rent a boat for you.”

Rick shuddered. Clutching Marty’s shoulder, he replied in a voice that sounded incredibly calm and collected given the circumstances, “No thanks. Did it maybe cross your mind that playing with a whale could be dangerous?”

Marty laughed. “Dangerous? Are you kidding me?”

Rick couldn’t decide whether Marty was teasing him, or if he really didn’t see the potential danger he’d been in. Rick cupped Marty’s ass cheeks in his hands and grumbled, “That monster could have knocked you out.”

Marty wound his arms around Rick’s neck and whispered, “Were you worried? I’m sorry if you were, but I assure it wasn’t dangerous, just a really marvelous experience.”

“That’s not the kind of marvelous experience I like.”

Warm gray eyes observed him, and Rick loosened his grip on Marty’s shoulders. A moment later he disentangled himself from the blanket and lifted Marty to sit between his open thighs. Marty guided one of Rick’s hands to the front of his tail, shivering when Rick caressed it.

A low hum emerged from Marty’s throat. He had trouble forming words instead of , but at the third attempt Rick understood his question, “Do you want me?”

“Yes” Rick croaked.

Rick gasped when Marty’s nimble fingers opened his fly and freed his erection. His gasp turned into astonished wheezes when Marty shifted partially. From his knees downward, the tail remained, while the rest of his body shifted into his human form. Marty squirmed into the position he wanted, and Rick slid inside him.

Neither man said a word during their unique love-making. Marty’s fluke slapped onto the boulder rhythmically while Rick moved inside him. Needy thrums accompanied their tender act of love, sending rippling sensations through them both. It was like nothing Rick had ever experienced. Rick’s yell of pleasure echoed in the bay while Marty keened when they both tumbled over the edge.

Afterward, they stayed in a tight embrace for a long time, snuggled together under the blanket, watching the waves pile up and break in a steady, mesmerizing flow. Smiling, Rick listened to Marty quietly trilling, telling the world how he felt about them.

How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me back! Dreamspinner Press will publish my new release, Secret Energy, on August 29th. Secret Energy is a shape-shifter story, and the sequel to Secret Chemistry.

To date, Secret Energy is the longest book I’ve ever written. It’s also the one I’ve re-written multiple times. I knew the editing process would be long and exhausting but that’s okay, some books are like that. But… then I received an e-mail informing me about the start of the editing process on Secret Energy. So far, so good. Then, I received another e-mail, informing me about the start of the editing process on Tidal Change. In that very moment, I succumbed to a light panic attack.

Now, how did I keep my sanity?

  • Told my husband about it, while trying not to hyperventilate. I received an amused smile, and he said, “I guess you won’t be bored then.” I reciprocated with a death glare, which gained me a massage later that night. 😉
  • Bought some new books to read, so I wouldn’t think about the upcoming edits. Because pretending the edits won’t magically appear in my inbox is always so realistic, right? Anyway, I got loads of awesome books.
  • I wrote another book, hoping if I lost myself in that world, the edits wouldn’t show up in my inbox. Naturally that wasn’t the case but hey, I got lots of writing done while I waited on my edits.
  • The main reason why I kept my sanity was my editor Erika Orrick. She knew very well I might be overwhelmed with the editing of both books, so she staggered them. I was never without work for more than a few days but it was do-able. So there, an awesome editor is worth a lot!

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed by work? Push through or try to hide? Eat chocolate or go for a run? I’m curious to learn more about your strategies!

An Excerpt from Secret Energy

Robin held his breath as he waited for Tim’s reaction. He scooted closer to the bear, and the bear sat down behind him, resting his heavy head on Robin’s left shoulder.

Tim shifted so fast that Robin recoiled. He pressed his bare back against the bear’s massive bulk, savoring the soft touch of fur on his skin. A wave of need rolled through him, rushing from his head to his crotch, pooling there. Robin covered his hardening erection as inconspicuously as possible.

“No,” Tim stated in a low voice. “No, he’s not. He’s a bear.”

Robin kept his eyes averted as he answered, “I think he’s a were-bear.”

Someone giggled, and Robin redirected his gaze toward Jay and Tim. Jay had shifted to his human form and lay on his side, trembling and white-faced. He was also the one emitting the giggling sounds, even though he tried his best to stifle them. Robin’s lips twitched into a smile.

Tim stepped over Jay and knelt next to him. The protective gesture wasn’t lost on Robin.

“Stop giggling. What’s so funny here?” Tim muttered.

“A were-bear. It rhymes.”

Confusion showed on Tim’s face as he said, “Great. So my brother is a poet and an idiot.”

“Hey!” Robin bristled.

The bear moved behind him, sliding even closer. Robin pushed back a little, relieved at feeling his mate’s presence. He still didn’t understand why the bear didn’t talk to him, but the silent support helped, more than it probably should given that he didn’t know anything about his mate, not even his name.

“I don’t believe he’s your mate,” Tim said.

“Why not?”

“He’s a bear.”

“A were-bear,” Jay corrected.

Robin caught Tim throwing an irritated glance at Jay. As quickly as it appeared, the glance disappeared because Jay was trailing his fingertips up and down Tim’s right forearm, calming him.

“He’s not going to mate a bear, nor is he going to mate a were-bear.”

“That’s not your decision to make,” Robin shot back hotly.

“You’re my little brother. Of course I’m making the decision.”

Stunned silence settled around them for a moment. The bear huffed and lifted his head from Robin’s shoulder. Robin immediately grabbed for the bear’s neck to pull him back. Jay coughed harshly, drawing Tim’s attention to him. Behind Tim’s back he gestured toward Robin’s crotch.

Gulping, Robin adjusted his legs so his half-hard cock was hidden from view. He mouthed ‘thank you’ to Jay. The bear sniffed, his head lowering until he came close to Robin’s erection.

“Uh, no sniffing there now,” Robin whispered. When the bear didn’t react, Robin added a desperate “Please.”

The bear moved his head away, though he swiped his tongue over Robin’s nipples as he did so. Robin groaned, closed his eyes, and pressed back into the wooly fur. Blood pulsed in his cock, filling it.

“Do that again,” he demanded.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tim yelled.

Robin’s eyes flew open. Shit! Just for a few seconds, he’d forgotten where he was and, more importantly, who was there.

“I-I…,” Robin stuttered. His cheeks burned.

“Stop this crap and come over here!” Tim shouted, the anger contorting his face.

“You stop this damn awful big-brother show,” Jay interrupted.

Tim swiveled his head around to look at Jay. “What?”

“Robin found his mate, and we won’t act like jerks and tear them apart. I’m not happy about being injured, but Robin’s right, I shouldn’t have attacked right away.”

“But—”

“Tim, you fought for me even though I’m a hybrid. Why is it so difficult for you to accept Robin’s mate isn’t a pure werewolf either?” Jay asked so softly Robin had to strain his ears to hear him.

“He doesn’t resemble a wolf in the slightest!”

Jay shrugged. “Neither do I.”

“Yes, you do, and anyway, that’s beside the point.”

“Is it? Why?”

“Because….” Tim tucked a stray strand of Jay’s chestnut hair behind his right ear before he bent over to kiss Jay tenderly. When he straightened up again, he said, “You should shift back. The earth is moist around here, and you’re already freezing.”

“I will if you promise to stop being such a prick.”

The bear snorted, and Robin coughed. When Tim glared at them, Robin whispered, “Shh, don’t set him off again.”

The bear rubbed his head against Robin’s face, eliciting a contented sigh from Robin. He felt safe with the bear surrounding him. His mate would protect him no matter what, Robin was certain of that.

“Robin?” Jay called out. “Go with your mate.”

“What? No! I have a say in where he goes—”

“Shut up, Tim,” Jay responded. He accompanied his response with an exaggerated eye roll, causing Robin to chuckle.

“Jay! He’s my baby brother, and I—”

“You will act like the great big brother you are and let him go with his mate. We can’t change the fact his mate isn’t a pure werewolf, Tim. Your parents are working hard on installing new laws and changing people’s perspectives. They’ll find a solution,” Jay said, although his voice didn’t hold much conviction.
