Why Vampires?

by Jocelynn Drake

October always puts me in the mood for spooky stories and the paranormal. I love witches, warlocks, demons, shifters, and of course vampires.

I have always loved vampires, and it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the scary, rip-your-head-off vampires or the sexy, brooding vampires. Though, I will admit that my preference runs for the more violent and misunderstood vampires.

I love their magic and their myth. I love all the crazy variations and complex rules.

My very first published book was called Nightwalker and it focused on the adventures of a vampire named Mira and a vampire hunter named Danaus. Their world was dark and violent, where everyone was waiting to betray them and the only people they would depend on were supposed enemies.

When I first started writing about vampires I was entranced by the idea of humans suddenly having immense power and few consequences. How would it corrupt them? And what kind of person wouldn’t be corrupted, but see it as a means to a new kind of responsibility.

Now, many years after the conclusion of Mira and Danaus’s story in the Dark Days series, I’m back to vampires for a slightly different reason. With the Lords of Discord, I’m now looking at four brothers who had made a monumental decision to change their lives forever to protect a loved one. Is that sense of family and loyalty enough to hold them together?

And can love save them when everything starts to fall apart?

Another great reason to jump into a vampire novel is the great variation on this old monster. Are they dependent on blood? Can sunlight kill them? Can they eat food? Can they go into a church or temple? Did they really strike a deal with the devil?

Each new vampire novel brings a new spin on an old story.

With the Lords of Discord, I’ve rewritten the rules a little bit to give you a different kind of vampire that is both powerful and vulnerable.

And, of course, some magic.

Because I think we could all use a little magic in our lives.
