A week later, Caleb and Leo sat in their living room, watching the last bits of sun fall over the ocean. “Did Benji say why we needed to clear our schedule for the weekend?” Caleb asked. They’d already been out to dinner, grabbing sushi at one of their favorite places.

Yesterday, Benji had called, claiming that he and Leo needed to be “totally available” for the next two days, starting at eight PM on Friday. That was still an hour away, and Caleb could tell how antsy Leo was about not knowing every single detail about what was going on.

“I don’t know. It doesn’t make sense. They weren’t even supposed to be here,” Leo said, drumming his fingers on the arm of the sofa. “They were supposed to be gone for at least another month in South America, and now they’re back, and making demands.” He sounded put out. “I had to call in like fifty favors with Felix, who understandably wants to spend time with his new boyfriend, and here I am, begging off for an entire weekend.”

It wasn’t great timing for Caleb either. Steve and Mario had flown in last week, and they’d worked on the songs he’d initially started with Brad, as well as a few others. Caleb had made enough progress that he actually felt like he might want to pull in another producer soon, just to help polish up some of the tracks—and to work on the one, final song that he still hadn’t really touched. His heart wanted it, no matter what made logical sense, to be Leo, but he still hadn’t figured out a way to ask. He’d been working up to the question, when Benji had called with his request for two free days.

“Laurel will be fine. She’s settling in great with Felix,” Caleb soothed. He reached out and captured Leo’s hand with his own, stopping the relentless, nervous tapping of his fingers. “She’ll be fine for two days. She even told you to go.”

“Yeah, it’s not her I’m worried about,” Leo retorted.

“Felix will be fine, too.” But Caleb was sure Felix would figure out a way to extract his own unique pound of flesh. After all, that was kind of Felix’s signature. Caleb wasn’t even sure, two years into his new relationship with Leo, that he had truly forgiven him for the way the first one had ended.

Nobody was more loyal than Felix Humphries; but nobody else could quite hold a grudge like him either.

“I hope so,” Leo said, then paused. “I’m sure this wasn’t great timing for you, either. You’ve been at the studio every single day for a week. It must be going really well.”

Leo had asked so many leading questions just like this one. He’d even asked several at dinner, only an hour or so earlier. But Caleb didn’t know how to talk about the album—at least not until he could figure out a way to pull Leo in, to play it for him, and ask him what he should be tweaking.

“I’m happy with it,” Caleb said. “We’ve made progress.”

“And you like these guys you met in Fiji? Even though they’re Brad Maxwell’s people?”

“They’re musicians. Brad doesn’t own them,” Caleb said. “And yeah, they’re cool. They like my stuff, and maybe I’m egotistical enough to surround myself with yes men.”

Leo rolled his eyes fondly. “If that was true, I’d have convinced you to play it for me before now.”

“Soon,” Caleb said. Why didn’t he just ask? He didn’t know. The problem was that all the ways he kept planning started with, this whole album is about you, and even though Caleb was madly in love—still, always, forever—it didn’t feel like a very productive start to a conversation about producing an album.

“So you don’t really have a clue what Benji and Diego want?” Leo said, changing the subject. “No theories, even?”

Caleb had one theory; it was just crazy enough that they might’ve done it. “Do you think they’re eloping?” he asked.

“What,” Leo screeched.

“I mean . . . it’s not the most outlandish theory,” Caleb defended.

“Like they would ever dare to get married before us,” Leo said, his eyes suddenly growing huge, like he hadn’t realized he’d actually said that out loud.

Caleb laughed and gripped Leo’s hand tightly. “Do you really want to elope?” he asked. He’d tried for a casual tone, but there was nothing casual about asking the love of your life how he felt about getting married.

But Leo only shrugged. “I never worried about it, not ever, but if they beat us down the aisle? I’ll be happy for them, I guess, but . . .”

“Did you study my post-op instructions?” Max asked, the corner of his mouth quirking up. Max had a beautiful mouth, and a full lower lip that had entranced Felix for years. He still didn’t know why Max insisted on keeping it covered up with facial hair. Maybe he was worried men and women both would never stop throwing themselves at him if he left it bare.

“It’s important to be informed,” Felix said primly. Let Max think he was just being a good friend; even let him think that Felix was doing this because he felt some kind of work obligation. The only thing Max couldn’t think was that Felix was doing this was because he was crazy, head-over-heels, launch-himself-over-a-cliff, in love with him.

“Maybe you should go to law school,” Max suggested, leaning back after he’d chugged half the bottle of water. Felix took it back from him and put it on the table. He’d read the PT instructions three times, he knew exactly what he needed to do, and he fully intended to do it. But Max wasn’t going to like it and Felix cared too much to casually cause him pain.

“Why this obsession with trying to find me a new career?” Felix asked suspiciously. For the last few months, as the tour had wound down, and the members of Star Shadow had begun to wonder what they might do with the yearlong break they’d insisted on, Max had come up with half a dozen career paths that he thought Felix should explore—some serious and some very clearly not serious.

Max shrugged. “I know you hate being bored.”

“I’m not bored,” Felix retorted. “You guys have plenty going on, even when you’re on a ‘break’.”

“Okay, because I’d hate for you to waste your time working for us when you could be doing something amazing with your life.”

Felix stiffened. “Lots of people would assume that working with Star Shadow is plenty amazing.”

“They haven’t met us, obviously,” Max said with a sharp, quicksilver grin. “I know Caleb offered to hire you for his solo stuff, but I think you should hold out. He can be sort of a pain in the ass. A real perfectionist.”

“I hadn’t decided yet,” Felix said. Which was the truth. He hadn’t. He’d been going to Fiji with Leo and Caleb because it was Fiji, not because he had any intention of being at his brother’s boyfriend’s beck and call. The truth was, he knew he’d have his pick of any PA job he wanted during the break. He’d gotten plenty of offers other than Caleb’s. He just hadn’t decided quite yet what he wanted to do. It was nice not to have to worry, because he had money in the bank to pay for his mortgage, and no pressing need to find a new job.

“At least, if you’re going to take it, make him pay you a ton more. Caleb means well, but Caleb’s . . .”

“Believe me, I know what Caleb is and how he works,” Felix said primly. Caleb was one of the nicest people on the planet—steadfast and loyal and true—but also, like Max had said, a massive pain in the ass with his need for everything to be perfect all the time. He hadn’t been so bad before he’d left, but after he’d come back? He was still the same man, but suddenly with a driving, insatiable need for everything to work out just so.

“Not that you couldn’t negotiate anything you wanted,” Max added ruefully.

“Exactly.” Felix hoped his firm tone of voice indicated that the subject was closed. He was here for Max, not for some kind of misguided career counseling. It wasn’t like Max hadn’t done well for himself, but he’d known what he was going to do with his life at the age of sixteen. He gave freaking terrible adulting advice.

Max smirked. “Message received, loud and clear.”

“Good.” Felix cleared his throat. “First, we’re going to bend a little bit, raising and lowering your ankle. Slowly, and just as much as you can. No need to overdo it.”

Max’s glance was swift and apprehensive. “I’m not sure . . .”

“This is good,” Felix soothed. “It helps to make sure clots don’t form. And afterward, we’ll ice you up. It’ll be fine.”

Max gritted his teeth and slowly began to bend his knee, raising his ankle slightly above the large mound of pillows it was currently propped on. “That’s great, you’re doing great,” Felix encouraged as he moved it back down, and then repeated the movement a second time.

“This sucks,” Max said, sweat beading at his hairline. Clearly not from the minimal effort, but from the discomfort.

“Well, yeah, I didn’t think it was going to be a walk in the park,” Felix said, feigning nonchalance, even though he was sweating too, at the thought of the pain Max was in. “Did you?”

Impossible Things by Beth Bolden: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Impossible Things

When the carousel ride completed, and Diego carried Ana over to where Abby and Benji waited for them, he shot the latter a huge smile. “I’m so glad you came with us,” Diego confided as Benji handed him his cup. “You made today special.”

Benji shrugged a little self-consciously. “You could’ve made the same phone call and gotten the exact same results.”

“I don’t mean Abby, and not waiting in any lines, though that is nice,” Diego said. “I mean that it wouldn’t have been as special if you weren’t with us.”

Benji nearly pulled up short as they approached Dumbo and its insane line, creeping all the way around the ride and threatening to spill into the walkways around it. “You . . . you really mean that, don’t you?” he asked, clearly surprised.

It was hard not to feel a twinge of guilt at the shock in Benji’s voice. “You’ve always been an important part of our lives, but . . . now, more than ever, we want you here, with us.”

Benji reached out and squeezed Diego’s shoulder. His gaze told Diego that he wanted so much more. He wanted to lean down and casually kiss him, like it was something they already did a dozen times each day. He wanted to hold hands, without it catching the attention of every single harried parent in this line.

Diego could have changed the famous line, “with great power comes great responsibility,” to “with great power comes great obligation,” and it would have still been completely accurate. He’d never felt the obligation of his fame as strongly as he did in this moment. Before, he’d felt it for others, specifically Leo and Caleb, but never for himself. It had never truly gotten in the way of anything he’d ever wanted—instead it had made a lot of things easier. Money made even the bitterest pill easier to swallow.

But money couldn’t fix this problem. No matter how much money they had, Benji couldn’t confiscate every single phone in this park. He’d seen the occasional interested face, and more than one quick flash in his direction. Pictures would exist of his trip here today with Ana, and while it was terrible enough that they were taking pictures of his kid, he couldn’t risk him and Benji looking like anything more than good friends.

“You excited for Dumbo, Ana?” Benji asked her as Diego picked her up and carried her the last bit of the way to the ride. She was good on her feet, with sturdy legs that usually would carry her farther and faster than Diego ever wanted to go, but it had been a long day already and he could tell she was getting tired.

But Ana, instead of answering with increasing excitement, promptly burst into tears.

Instantly, Diego stopped and leaned against an empty stretch of low wrought-iron fencing. Shifting Ana in his arms, he gave her a soft smile. “Ana Banana, what’s wrong?”

“Saaaaaaad,” Ana wailed.

Diego exchanged blank, confused looks with Abby over Ana’s head, but then Benji was suddenly there, putting a big palm on her narrow back, and gently transferring over to his own arms.

“It is a sad movie,” Benji cooed at her, and she calmed from sobbing hysterics to only a trickle of tears. “But Dumbo is happy at the end, right?”

“Dumbo sad!” Ana exclaimed again, and for a moment, as everyone in their group held their breath, she looked to be on the precipice of a second outburst.

“Sometimes you’re sad so you know what being happy is, Ana-girl,” Benji said softly, seriously.

“Happy,” she parroted back, a puzzled look on her sweet face.

“Yeah,” Benji said, hugging her close, “we’re happy right now.”

“I guess that’s a no on Dumbo,” Diego said.

“Actually, I think she should ride it. She’d like it, and it might give her a different perspective,” Benji offered.

Diego rolled his eyes. “Sure thing. You want to ride it with her, then, Mr. Child Psychologist?”

Benji grinned. “I’d love to.”

Abby and Diego watched from a little distance as Benji carried Ana over to the ride.

“He’s very sweet with her,” Abby offered, kindness tempering the crisp edges of his accented words. “You’re very lucky to find someone who loves your kid as much as you do.”

Diego opened his mouth and then snapped it shut again. What could he say? No, you’re wrong? We’re not involved, and I’m not lucky? All Abby would have to say was, have you seen that guy? He’s ripped and gorgeous and adores your child—and you.

Abby shot him a sideways glance. “We all sign NDAs, by the way, if that matters.”

Diego wanted to be at a place in their lives where that didn’t matter, but he knew better.

“It does, actually,” Diego said with a reluctant sigh. “This is all very new, and well . . . you’ve surely seen the circus around Leo and Caleb. I’m not sure I’m ready to subject Ana to all that.”

“Well, as one queer man to another, it’s pretty damn cool regardless.” Abby grinned. “It meant a lot, that interview you guys did.”
