He scoots to the edge of the bed to get up, and I notice the new tattoo taking up his entire back again, and this time I’m close enough to get a good look at it. It’s bright red and looks like flowers. The possible meaning of it hits me in the chest, and I sit up to get a better look.
“Are these hibiscus flowers?”
He turns his head and gives me a shy smile over his shoulder. “Yes.”
“Benji, I—”
He cuts me off with a kiss. “Our lives are a mess, ‘Ris; let’s not make it more complicated.”
“Right,” I agree.
As he walks out of the room, I feel a mixture of relief that I’m not alone in feeling more than I should and disappointed. I know he’s right; everything with his band is still up in the air. Neither of us know where we’ll live or what career we’ll have in six months; it’s the completely wrong time to start something more. But maybe one day…
