If Characters Were Cars

by TA Moore

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new contemporary romance Take the Edge Off.

One of the main characters in Take the Edge Off is a professional driver, and ex-semi-professional car thief. So inspired by that (and by the fact that a friend of mine’s husband chants ‘I’m a bus, I’m a bus, I’m a big red bus’ whenever he ends up in a bus lane) I am going to answer a question that I know you’re all dying to know the answer to: What would these characters be like if they were cars?

Joseph ‘Joe’ Bailey is rich, successful, and colours inside the lines. The son of a rich man Joe’s always had a lot, so it feels safer to be content what what he’s got rather than push through for what he really wants. Whether that is his career, the projects he takes on for his father, or who he loves. Easier to do what people expect in public, and what you want when they aren’t looking.

That said, within his self-imposed limits, Joe isn’t used to hearing ‘no’ when he sets his sights on something. Or someone. He’s a handsome man who appreciates the finer things in life, from his clothes to the company he keeps, and likes to be in control. Life, he’s found, runs smoother when you plan it out ahead of time and make sure that everyone involved know what is expected of them.

An American in London for business he has no intention of driving in the city (something that I, the author, sympathise with!), but he doesn’t actually like to drive anyhow. It’s the one place he cedes control, but only as far as the reins his wallet can put on a driver.

If Joe was a car he’d be Porsche 911 Carrera. Stylish, expensive, and beautiful to look at. It’s the sort of car that looks good in a garage, but the owner never really takes it out and opens it up on a long, dusty road to nowhere just for the joy of hearing the engine rev. Well, not until someone who’s got no boundaries gets behind the wheel anyhow.
