Blurb: When mega movie star and two time Academy Award winner, Austin Grainger voluntarily gave up his dazzling film career, his adoring fan base thought he’d lost his mind. For Austin, the seclusion of fifteen hundred acres in the middle of Texas sounds like paradise. No more cameras, paparazzi, or overzealous media to hound him every day and night. Little did the sexiest man alive know when one door closes, another usually opens. And Austin’s opened by way of a sexy, hot ranch owner right next door.
Kitt Kelly wasn’t your average rancher. He’s young, well educated and has hidden his sexuality for most of his life. When his long time wet dream materializes as his new neighbor it threatens everything he holds dear. No way the ranching community would ever accept him if he came out. With every part of his life riding on the edge, can Kitt risk it all for a chance at love or will responsibility to his family heritage cost him his one chance at happiness?
Sooooo, Texas Pride was Jen’s pick for my challenge poll and it won by a landslide! I’m going to put it out there and admit that I DID NOT want to read this book. Not even a little bit…wasn’t even on my TBR list. For one: there’s a half naked cowboy on the cover. Second: its a looooong contemporary romance without any mystery…not really. And third: there’s a COWBOY on the cover!!!! Ah, but what’s the point of it being a challenge if it isn’t really a challenge, right?
So what was Texas Pride about? A cowboy! And an actor who wants to be a cowboy! Award winning actor Austin Grainger is sick and tired of the celebrity life. He just wants to move out into the middle of Nowhere, Texas and live quietly on the private farm he bought…maybe finally settle down and find a long term lover. Fantasies start flowing as soon as Austin meets his new neighbor Kitt Kelly. Kitt is trying to bring his family’s ranch back into the black after his father’s death causing him to sell a piece of his property to Austin. Kitt has crushed on Austin ever since high school and was the star of all Kitt’s gay teenage fantasies. Both men are deeply closeted, so what could a little convenient fucking around hurt?
As I said earlier, I really did not want to read this, but I went into it with as wide of an open mind as I could. I was expecting a sex-fest, and yes there was a lot of sex. I think what I struggled with mostly early on in the story was all the masturbation and sex fantasy scenes. I quickly lost count, but if I had to guesstimate, I would say there was at least between 5-7 scenes. I’m all for good sexual tension but this was far too much and mostly felt like repetitive filler that I could have easily done without. I wanted Kitt and Austin to actually have scenes together to ramp up the tension, but no, there wasn’t much of that…mostly just the fantasies.
Since this was a challenge book, I had to push forward and keep going; and THANK GOD I did because about halfway into the book it really hit a turning point for me and I couldn’t put it down. Kitt was such a stubborn horse’s ass and Austin was a total sap, but somehow they had burrowed themselves into my heart and I couldn’t help cheering for them. They were both so frustrating at times, especially Kitt and I just wanted to slap him and scream “communicate and stop hiding”!! But I still believed in their attraction and their love for each other that I just couldn’t wait to see them live happily ever after…out in the open.
As I also said earlier, there was a lot of sex. Once I finally got past all the fantasy scenes to the real sex, ohmyfuckinggod it was HOT! I wouldn’t say Kitt and Austin were kinky really, but they were definitely creative in the positions and locations they found to get naked. I’m so tempted to start counting some of them off, but no, you need to read and discover them for yourself. There was one little detail that bothered me though: supposedly Austin preferred to bottom and Kitt preferred to top, but nearly every on-page scene had Austin topping Kitt. If I remember correctly, there was only one scene that showed Kitt topping Austin. I don’t know if I misunderstood somewhere, but I was a bit confused by this. I wanted to see Kitt topping and all over Austin…but I only remember getting to read that once. (If there was another time, I can’t remember it.)
Hmm, I feel like I’ve been going on and on about the sex, but there ended up being much more to this story than that. There were some awesome characters: like Mike (who I hoped was gay) and Cara (Austin’s ex) and Kitt’s family (who I wanted to see more of). There was even quite a bit of humor (a hilarious scene with one of Kitt’s sisters…omg I had tears laughing so hard). There also was a tiny bit of suspense…I mean I was expecting some things to happen, and of course they did, but the suspense was all in how that was going to play out. And let me tell you, I was freaking out there near the end!! *Sigh* The ending was so awesome and sweet and even cried a bit with a big smile on my face.
In summary, after a really rough start, the second half of the book totally redeemed the entire story for me and I’m soooooo happy I was challenged to read this. Thank you, Jen.
Overall Impression: I Really Liked It!
