Blurb: Leo has been sent on a mission to find a missing doxie. And after weeks at Leo’s side, Kaleb is suddenly alone. Free of the cruelty the Chimera, he should be rejoicing. But instead, he becomes aware of a void in his heart, he never knew was there until Leo wasn’t there to fill it. When Leo returns Kaleb is faced with the choice of disobeying Leo—forcing him to take ambrosia—or risk losing him forever.
With a single flower, Leo is back under the control of the Association. And what kind of punishment is suitable for a doxie who disobeys his Master, even though it saves his life? Leo has a list of ideas, starting with Kaleb’s first visit to a Gathering.
At the Gathering of the gods, doxies, and mortal men, Kaleb first lays eyes on Aaron. The beautiful doxie is presented by the god Sol. There he will be fed the ambrosia, Awakened to his journey of immortality, and then serve his god, Sol, for all to see. Only the horror of Aaron’s treatment by Sol makes Kaleb realize monsters come in many forms.
And not all of them hunt doxies.
Review: This is the continuation of The Chimera, and you definitely need to read that before jumping into this one. Now, Leo is off to retrieve the missing doxie, but he returns a bit worse for the wear. Having stopped taking the ambrosia, his healing abilities are majorly hampered. But, with the help of the ever persuasive Zen and his sidekick Cerberus, they convince Kaleb to help change that.
Kaleb is still in the midst of his training which gets even more intense in this segment. Leo uses his Master training skills with electro play, orgasm denial and a few other methods which are a bit cruel at times. But, Kaleb finds himself hating and loving what Leo does to him. His feelings are definitely growing for Leo and even The Chimera, enough so that he chooses them over having to be with anyone else. The strong bond that is growing between them is sure to cause a stir, especially as we learn more about Kaleb’s abilities and is shaping up to be much more important than what Alton had hoped for when he set out to create the perfect doxie who is able to produce enough pure ambrosia to feed them all. Unfortunately, it seems Leo has other ideas in keeping Kaleb all to himself
We meet some of the other players here, including the sweet Aaron. He escaped his run in with the creature, but how will the damage affect his life now and will he ever be able to live happily because of it? I’m looking forward to seeing more of that play out for sure. We also get so see more of Sonny, Kaleb’s younger trans brother. It seems there is much more to him than meets the eye as well, as is learned once he starts training with Zen. They are all moved to Sanctuary when the creature seems to be killing any doxie he can get his hands or mouth on, so it will be interesting to see more of them as well.
This was another fast-paced and interesting story that gave a bit of satisfaction by way of more details and answers to the many questions from book 1. There is still a lot at play though, and I can’t wait to see how it all pans out. I can’t wait for the next installment.
Overall Impression: I really liked it
