“I’m going with you,” Snow announced.
Lucas whipped around, his heart skipping a beat at Snow’s words. The man looked paler, and his jaw was clenched hard. He was sick with just the idea of going back to Oklahoma. A part of Lucas desperately wanted Snow there with him, but he knew how painful it would be for his friend. Living in that damn town had nearly killed him. Besides his friendship with Lucas, he really had no good memories of the place.
“Ash, you don’t have to do this.”
Snow lifted one dark eyebrow at him, mocking him. Yeah, he got it. If roles had been reversed, there was no way in hell that Snow would be traveling to their hometown without him.
“Fine,” Lucas muttered. He didn’t even feel clear in how he’d been railroaded into this in the first place. He was leaving his fiancé right before his wedding to return to a place that hosted all his worst nightmares.
He had family that was proud of him. Family that respected him and now needed him.
“Call your pilot, Lucas. Tell him that we’re flying out at nine tomorrow,” Snow said, grabbing his coat off the back of the couch.
“You’re off work already?”
“Next few days,” he said with a nod. “Come on, Nicole. I’ll drop you at the hotel near here. Andrei is going call ahead and get you a room.”
Nicole jumped up and grabbed her coat. She paused and quickly hugged Andrei. She stopped in front of Lucas for a moment, looking like she wanted to hug her brother, and Lucas’s entire body tensed up. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if she touched him. His heart was painfully pounding in his chest and he couldn’t breathe. He didn’t want her to touch him, wasn’t ready for it.
With a small smile and a nod, she followed Snow out the front door without touching him.
The second they were alone again, Andrei was in his arms. Lucas held him tight, ignoring the shaking that was spreading throughout his limbs. He wanted to help Taylor but deep down, he knew he was terrified to go back to his hometown. He didn’t want to look too closely at the person he’d been in those early years. Didn’t want to think about how he’d failed himself and Snow so many times. How they’d barely made it out alive.
“I’m going.” Andrei’s hard voice snapped him out of his swirling dark thoughts.
Lucas nuzzled Andrei’s neck, breathing deeply so that he felt like he was surrounded by his scent. Everything about Andrei felt right, calming the dark places of his mind and soul. God, he didn’t know what he’d do without this man. “You’re staying.”
He lifted his head to meet Andrei’s skeptical gaze. “You’re a wreck, and you haven’t left Cincy yet.”
A sigh slipped past Lucas’s lips. “I need to do this. And I think Snow does too.”
“And you need me.”
Lucas traced his fingers along Andrei’s jaw. “I will always need you.”
“So I’m going.”
“You’re right. Ian will be upset if we both go. It’s less than twenty-four hours. Snow and I will be back tomorrow night and then we can spend the rest of that night erasing all my memories of that place from my mind.”
“You know I’ll be there in a heartbeat if you need me.”
Lucas leaned forward and kissed Andrei, loving how the man melted into him. “I’m counting on it.”
