“You look fabulous, darlin’.” I cringed inwardly when I realized I had said the term of endearment out loud. It had been easy to slip up when he looked so good that I didn’t want to leave the hotel room.
The pink of his cheeks turned even rosier. “Trust me, nobody will look at me with you dressed like that.”
I walked over to him and stepped into his personal space. He studied me with wide eyes, the perfect picture of innocence. Everything in me wanted to lean down and capture his lush lips in a kiss, but I couldn’t. “You’re wrong.” I tried and failed to resist the urge to caress his cheek. “I won’t be able to take my eyes off you.”
Flustered, he put some distance between us. He sounded shaky when he told me, “Stop it. You don’t have to pretend when they’re not here to see.”
“Who said I was pretending?” I did my best to act casual as I walked to the door while my heart raced from being so daring. It took him a moment to follow me downstairs to meet the ladies.
As we waited for the elevator to come, he demanded, “Why are you so fine with this?”
“Because it’s you.”
My answer didn’t seem to satisfy him. “Shouldn’t you be uncomfortable with this farce?”
The doors opened and we entered the empty elevator to ride down to the lobby to meet Sara and Fiona. I skirted as close as I could to the truth without fully confessing how I felt about Augie. “Why? It’s not like I’m lying about you being one of the most important people in my life.” When he didn’t respond, my stupid gob kept going. “I mean, in some weird way, aren’t we basically platonic boyfriends who do everything together but fuck?”
He stared at me in stunned disbelief, unable to formulate a response of any kind. It was completely understandable, given that was a thought I really should have kept in my damn head. When would I ever learn?
Then again, if I was already in this deep, I may as well commit.
About Love Means More
AMBROSE O’ROURKE
I’ve only met one person I couldn’t seduce—Augie Murphy, the man I love who thinks I’m straight. When I have a chance to be his fake boyfriend, it’s too much temptation to resist. It turns out that’s literally true, since I get carried away with a passionate kiss. He thinks it’s just a game, but it’s so much more than that.
Can I convince my best friend I want to be his boyfriend for real?
AUGUST “AUGIE” MURPHY
Ambrose is handsome, irresistible, and completely off-limits. That didn’t stop my stupid heart from falling in love with my best friend the first day we met. When he suggests we pretend to be boyfriends on a double date, my curiosity defeats my common sense. Even if we’re only pretending for one night, I want to know what it’s like to be loved by him.
Is it possible to turn my fake boyfriend for a night into my real one forever?
