Exclusive Excerpt from A Counselor Among Wolves

by Liv Olteano

I walked back into my bedroom still rubbing my hair dry, the towel hanging almost haphazardly around my hips. And as I entered, I froze. My bed wasn’t as I’d left it. It was radically different, in fact. Weiss, wearing only sweatpants, lay back against the headboard and was merrily watching TV—in my bed. Okay, technically it was his, but right now it was mine.

“What the hell?” I muttered.

He spared me a glance, running his gaze over me from head to toe and back up again. “Nice entrance.”

I put my hands on my hips. “What the fuck are you doing?” I asked, exasperated.

“Watching TV,” he said in a general “duuh” tone.

“I mean, why are you watching it in my bed?”

He yawned and stretched his legs, making his muscles bunch and relax again in a mesmerizing way. “Easiest way to make sure you’ll smell of me. You’ll sleep in that T-shirt,” he said, inclining his head toward the lump of fabric resting at the foot of the bed. “Your pillow and sheets will smell of me too, so you’ll smell right in the morning.”

And they’d smell of him while I’d sleep in them. The bastard… how was I supposed to sleep like that?

“Want to coordinate our stories about how we spent the night together too?” I asked acidly.

He snorted. “I’m a goddamn PBI agent, Edel. Trust me, I’ve got it covered,” he said, smugly pressing some buttons on the remote.

To my endless horror, some porn started playing instead of the game he was watching. Weiss fumbled with the remote and changed channels, but it was too late. I’d already heard some shameless moaning, and it was giving me a rise—especially considering the half-naked Weiss sitting on my bed. God, how his abs flexed with his every move. The hard ridges of his muscles almost choked me, despite trying to look at anything else. And the hair on his chest, going down into a happy trail that was lost under his sweat—

I hung my head in utter defeat and despair. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

He cleared his throat. “The porn wasn’t part of the plan.”

Good to know. “How did you get in, anyway? I’m pretty sure I locked the door,” I snapped.

He held up a hand. “See that over there?” he said, pointing to an open door. “Communicates between our bedrooms.”

I was shocked I hadn’t noticed it before. Close to losing my patience, I took a deep breath and stared at him. “Is it just me, or are you getting off on this?”

He looked down at his sweats, where there was some response, I realized, looking down on it with him. Then he looked back up at me and grinned. “I’m funny like that,” he said.

Okay… okay. I’d had it. “What are you playing at, Weiss?” I asked, feeling defeated.

He lifted his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“You’re in my bed wearing only sweats after you just groped and molested me down in the living room. Are you sure we’re both clear on the fact we’ll just pretend to be together? Because it looks to me like you’re taking this whole thing a bit too… seriously.”

Big mistake. He got up, giving me a full show of how his abs flexed and how his body looked in motion from up close. So much wank material gathering, my brain was short-circuiting.

He sat at the edge of the bed, resting his hands on his knees. “As long as we’re having this heart-to-heart, I think there are some things you should know. You might want to sit down.”

I sat in the chair beside me, careful not to have stuff hanging out of the towel or flashing him. “Go on.”

He sighed. “I’m not exactly sure how to behave.”

“Picked up on that.”

He growled and looked up into my eyes. “I mean, with you, in this situation.”

“Neither do I,” I said as kindly as I could. “I hope you understand this is… new to me too.”

“I doubt going out with someone is new to you.”

“You’d be surprised,” I muttered under my breath. “I mean, pretending to go out with someone is a first for me too.”

“I guess I am used to pretending.”

I frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Never mind. I do cross lines, even on my best days. This hasn’t been one of them. I feel like an ass.”

“You are an ass,” I quipped.

He growled again and glared at me.

“Sorry,” I placated. “Why feel that way?”

“Where’s the line between pretending convincingly enough and actually going out together?”

I scratched my chin. “I guess meaning it makes the difference.”

“Yeah, but when we were making out downstairs… I meant it. Does it mean that when we were kissing, we were pretending very convincingly, or that it was real?”

About A Counselor Among Wolves

25311292Five dead leaders, their bodies arranged in a pentagram. Treason, lies, and backstabbing. A make-believe affair that turns into a real mating.

Timothy Sands is a PBI counselor, half-fey, half-elf, with a secret crush on Herman Weiss, PBI director. As a new chapter is added to the Leader Murders, it is Weiss’s responsibility to investigate what seems an impossible-to-solve case. The other problem? Weiss is suffering from rages, and his only salvation lies in Tim’s emotional-grid-balancing skills. They only have to pretend to be a couple for Tim to use his talents, and he owes Weiss a big favor. Piece of cake, right?

The fey might be involved in the Leader Murders. Someone on the Council might be their ally, and another prominent PBI figure looks more and more suspicious as they investigate. The stakes are upped when Timothy’s father, the Fey King, threatens to leave the Council destitute if they don’t hand Timothy over to him. Weiss’s brilliant solution? Mating Timothy and forcing the Council into protecting him.

There’s only one small hitch in that plan: instead of protecting one, the Council might decide to get rid of two.

Go Your Own Way by Zane Riley: Excerpt & Giveaway!

Excerpt from Go Your Own Way

by Zane Riley

“Where are we going?”

Lennox gazed out the windshield at the jagged horizon. It was getting late and this pit stop-turned-detour seemed more like a summer road trip. A bizarre urge to chase the July dusk seemed to have come over his grandfather. For the last hour, the Appalachian Mountains had begun to crest in front of the sun’s deep orange rays. The sun was all but gone now and the landscape around them was hidden in the darkness. He and Grandpa weren’t headed in the right direction. Home was the other way. It couldn’t be an accident: His grandfather always had a reason for everything he did.

“At your age, you should have east and west figured out by now.” Lennox plucked at his seatbelt. “Come on, Grandpa. What gives?”

Cameron McAvoy glanced at Lennox. His grandfather was a thin man with hair the color of dirty snow. He had frown lines around his eyes and mouth and a mole sprouting gray hairs where his jaw and neck met. On the rare days when he saw his grandfather, Lennox was fond of telling him he looked like a conservative politician past his prime.

“I’m taking you home.”

It was the same answer Lennox had heard since Vienna, and Lennox didn’t believe him for eleven reasons, each of which was an enormous road sign that didn’t list Richmond within the next eighty miles.

Honorary Blogger Carol Lynne: Meet the Lobster Cove Residents + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Meet the Lobster Cove Residents

by Carol Lynne

When I start a new series, I always begin with a list of characters. In my newest Lobster Cove series, I have an entire town of characters to create. Although I add to the list as I go, I thought I’d share with you a few of my initial cast of characters for this series. I use this list to keep them straight in my head. The one character I will leave as a mystery is my lighthouse keeper because his story needs to evolve slowly. I will warn you, I’m copying this from my private list, so forget about grammar or punctuation.

Lobster Cove Characters:

Joseph Allenbrand: 44 yrs old. Oversees a shelter for gay runaways. Bright blue eyes, black hair threaded with silver. Heads the new Rainbow Youth Center in Lobster Cove. The new shelter has room for 40 young men plus an apartment for Carl and Bev Walters.

Cullen “Little Man” Bryant –Moves to Lobster Cove from Cattle Valley to help oversee the town’s reconstruction and work with his partner, Joseph Allenbrand, to establish the new youth center.

Mick Hennessey: Asa hires Mick as chief of police. Brought up from New York, City after a shooting left him ready to get out of the city. Dark brown closely cropped hair, 36 yrs old, 6’2, built, bi-sexual.

Boone Jensen: Medium brown hair, shaggy. Hazel eyes with flecks of green, brown and gold. Stonemason and brick layer who moved to LC from Gary, Indiana. 29 yrs old, 6’2, muscular build from years of lifting rocks and working hard. Takes care of his younger brother, Laddy, after his mother’s death two months earlier. Decided the move to Lobster Cove would be good for both him and his brother.

Landon “Laddy” Jensen: 17 yr old with Down syndrome, Boone’s brother, brown closely-cropped hair.

Ava Hughs: Waitress and manager at Fiducia although she has a Master’s degree in business She’s Dante’s best friend and has sworn off men forever. 5’5, curvy, long blonde hair that she wears up in a knot most of the time, hazel eyes. Foster sister to Dante. They’ve known each other for 19 yrs.

Dante Madia: 35 yrs old, black shoulder length hair that he ties back when cooking. Brown eyes. Owns Fiducia (Trust in Italian) small exclusive restaurant with only room for thirty guests at a time. 35 yrs old, 6’1, shoulder-length black hair, dark brown eyes, medium build with toned and muscular body.

Jonah Briggs: owns his own lobster boat, runs a crew of three men, grew up in nearby Rockland Maine. Dark brown shaggy hair, brown eyes, 34 but looks older because of sun and wind damage while on the boat.

Isaac Diaz – Fire chief, 36 yrs old, short black hair, tall 6’2, muscular. Worked construction in the town in the early days of LC. Lives next door to Dante. Has a female Dalmatian named Ember that goes with him to the station when he’s on duty.

Alexander Stewart “Zander becomes known as Lexie” – 16, transgender teen from shelter, was locked in basement by his parents after he came out. Waist length dark brown hair.

Jake Skimmerhorn – 31 yrs old, dark brown hair, brown eyes, 6’, muscular, full beard, reclusive lighthouse keeper.

Well, that’s a partial list of the new characters you’ll meet in Lobster Cove. I hope your interest has been peaked in this new series, and I very much look forward to writing their stories.

An Excerpt from Welcome to Lobster Cove

Boone spun his beer bottle in an attempt to keep his eyes off Dante. Since their kiss in the kitchen, he’d thought of little else but getting Dante alone again.

“What about you, Boone?” Cullen asked.

“What do I need in town to make my life easier?” Boone reiterated the question in case he’d zoned out during a new topic.

“Yeah,” Cullen replied. “For Isaac it’s a bigger grocery store. Ava’s in dire need of a salon, and Laddy thinks a water park would be nice.”

Boone slid his gaze to his brother. “A water park? Seriously, Laddy?”

Laddy smiled. “We already have candy,” he stated as if a huge pool with slides and sprayers was a natural next step for the town.

Boone glanced at the people seated at the long table. “I’m not high maintenance, so I can make do with what’s available as long as there’s enough work to keep me employed.” He gestured to the men he’d met that evening. “I know this is going to sound corny as hell, but as long as I have friends and Laddy, I’m good.”

“I couldn’t have said it better,” Joseph Allenbrand chimed in.

Boone still couldn’t believe that Joseph used to be a Catholic priest, but, according to Joseph, he’d fallen in love with a parishioner and had decided to rescue homeless gay youths. That had led to an entire conversation about why the Rainbow Youth Center had left Washington, DC. Evidently, the bad situation in DC combined with Cattle Valley running out of room had prompted Asa to buy the bankrupt town of Lobster Cove. Before he’d received Nate’s call, Boone didn’t even know you could buy a town. Joseph had explained that Asa had bought the majority of the buildings from the bank, but there were quite a few houses that he’d purchased from the original owners once they’d learned who’d be moving into their neighborhood.

Mick stood then rested his hand on Dante’s shoulder. “Anything I can help with before I get out of here?”

Boone tried to keep his jealousy in check. Mick had flirted with every man at the party. Hell, he’d even flirted with Ava, so it must’ve been part of the police chief’s personality.

Dante answered Mick while staring directly at Boone. “Thanks, but we’ve got it.”

Boone’s cock began to harden at the heated expression on Dante’s face. As much as he loved Laddy, he suddenly wished he could spend the entire night getting to know Dante on an intimate level. Unfortunately, he’d have to settle for the PG13 evening Dante had offered.

Honorary Blogger Kate Sherwood: Gender Segregation: True Equality? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Gender Segregation: True Equality?

by Kate Sherwood

One of my favourite things about writing is the ability to play “what if”. For Sacrati, I got to play it a lot! I tried to start with a real-world situation, and then extended it a little. For the Torian society, I took the idea of a Spartan-style civilization, with their commitment to war, and took it even further. What if the men in the culture never lived with the women? What if they stayed in the barracks all the time?

Well, there’d need to be some contact, obviously. Babies have to come from somewhere. But, really, a few nights a year should take care of that, right?

One of the things that would probably happen with that level of gender segregation would be a lot of homosexual contact, which, for an m/m novel, is not a bad thing! But what else would happen?

Theos, one of my main characters, explains the system:

“The women stay in the city because they’re safe there. We need them, as many as possible, and we need them to be healthy. One man can have many children in a year; we don’t need as many men. So men go to war and keep the valleys safe, and women stay in the cities where they’re protected. They take care of business, and they build things and raise children.” Theos raised an eyebrow. “What’s so unnatural about that?”

At first I worried that I was reducing the women to being baby-machines. It felt oppressive to have them controlled by their biology. But then I realized that the women actually had a lot more freedom than the men in this society. The men had to be soldiers. If they weren’t fit for that, they weren’t fit to be citizens. The women, though? They could be blacksmiths or healers or farmers or potters or weavers or just about anything else.

It was interesting to imagine the possibilities. True equality? No, not really. But it was an interesting direction for my “what if” game to take!

Have you ever taken part in a formally gender-segregated activity? Private school, “women only” retreat, “men only” club… anything? If you did, how was it different or the same as a mixed-gender activity? Would you want to do it again? If you’ve never taken part in something like this, would you be interested in trying it?

About Sacrati

Sacrati_400x600As an elite Sacrati fighter in the mighty Torian military, Theos is blessed with a city full of women who want to bear his children, and a barracks full of men proud to fight at his side and share his bed. He has everything he needs—until he captures Finnvid on a raid.

Finnvid is on a secret mission to prevent the Torian invasion of his homeland Elkat. Being enslaved by Torian soldiers wasn’t in his plans. Neither is his horrified fascination with the casual promiscuity of the Sacrati warriors. Men should not lie with other men—and he should not be so intrigued when they do. He definitely should not be most intrigued by the leader of the soldiers who captured him and plan to invade his home.

For Theos, everything would have been easier if the infuriating, lying, bewildering Elkati had never come into his life, but he can’t stay away. When betrayal and treachery threaten both their nations, they must work together to stop a war that could destroy their homes forever—even as they begin to question everything they’re fighting for.

About Kate Sherwood

Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some changes!

Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage country”–other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!

Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy–the settings are just the backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take a chance on love?

Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets, squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s men need all the help they can get.

After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself, and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more stories in the future.

Honorary Blogger Dirk Greyson: Meet Day and Knight + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Meet Dirk Greyson’s Day and Knight

by Dirk Greyson

Hi, This is Dirk and its great to meet you all.  I first got the idea for Day and Knight over a year ago at Rainbowcon and then continued thinking about it at the Dreamspinner author conference in Portland.  I’m nit exactly sure where exactly the characters came from.  I think since I spent so much time churning them over in my head that they really took shape gradually.  I wanted both men to be the same, yet different.  I know that sounds weird, but both Day and Knight are strong, in control guys.  They have a number of things in common including the fact that they are deeply closeted and have spent much of their lives dedicated to jobs and careers.   Day worked for National Security and Knight is a Marine.  They both now work for a government shadow agency.  Day is an intense, smart, computer nerd who longs for field work.  Knight has been broken after the death of his family, crawled into a bottle, and is now being given his final chance.  He’s closed off and doesn’t talk much about himself.    When Day and Knight are given a join assignment, its anything but hearts and roses.  Knight views Day as a rookie and Day most sees Knight’s general assholeness, as he calls it.   To make matters worse, they need to stop a terrorist plot and decide to use a cruise as cover in order to get in and out under the radar.  The this is that the one cruise available that gets them where they want is a gay cruise and they need to remain under cover.  With these two, the sparks fly between them from day one and they might get together if they don’t kill each other first.
In the end I had an amazing time writing these two characters and they really got under my skin, so definitely expect to see more of them in the future.

About Day and Knight

DayAndKnightFSAs former NSA, Dayton (Day) Ingram has national security chops and now works as a technical analyst for Scorpion. He longs for fieldwork, and scuttling an attack gives him his chance. He’s smart, multilingual, and a technological wizard. But his opportunity comes with a hitch—a partner, Knighton (Knight), who is a real mystery. Despite countless hours of research, Day can find nothing on the agent, including his first name!

Former Marine Knight crawled into a bottle after losing his family. After drying out, he’s offered one last chance: along with Day, stop a terrorist threat from the Yucatan. To get there without drawing suspicion, Day and Knight board a gay cruise, where the deeply closeted Day and equally closeted Knight must pose as a couple. Tensions run high as Knight communicates very little and Day bristles at Knight’s heavy-handed need for control.

But after drinking too much, Day and Knight wake up in bed. Together. As they near their destination, they must learn to trust and rely on each other to infiltrate the terrorist camp and neutralize the plot aimed at the US’s technological infrastructure, if they hope to have a life after the mission. One that might include each other.

An Excerpt from Day and Knight

“Are you going to knock off for the night or sleep at your desk, newbie?” Knight asked, breaking Day’s concentration. “I have our travel arrangements all set, and the company even sprang for a decent stateroom.”

“We’re only going to be on the ship a few days. It seems like a waste to—”

Knight cut him off with a wave of his hand. “You’ve been busy and haven’t heard the latest. The sailing we’re on is a gay cruise, so you and I are playing the part of lovers on a vacation together.”

Day’s stomach did a flip and he tried his best to keep his discomfort off his face. “Sounds… interesting.” God, what in the hell did he say to that?

“Don’t worry, we don’t have to take it too far, but it was the easiest way to get us on the ship we need, and it will help us blend in with the other passengers.” Knight handed him a set of papers. “Put this someplace safe. That should be all your travel arrangements.”

Day nodded, reading through the details.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Knight said. “And you’re welcome.”

Day looked up from the travel documents and opened his mouth to say thank you, but Knight was already leaving the office with the grace of a panther on the prowl. Day was transfixed, his mind instantly stripping away the dress shirt and pants, imagining what might be hidden beneath. Probably acres of rich, olive-toned skin with just enough short dark hair on his chest to make things really interesting. Day’s mind conjured up a scent that made his head swim.

“Practicing for the cruise?” Knight asked from the doorway, and Day blinked once as he fell back to reality.

“Just wondering if being an ass came naturally to you or if you actually worked at it?” Day flashed a smile, thankful he’d been able to come up with something to cover his little daydream. Shit like that had to end. He needed to keep things together. He could do this.

“It’s a talent gifted by the gods,” Knight countered and left the room before Day had a chance to respond.

Day ground his teeth for a few seconds. That guy was going to drive him insane. He wished he had someone else as his partner for his first assignment. Day closed the transmission files he’d been working on and saved them onto a USB stick so he could take them home. A grin formed on his face as he opened a window into the Scorpion internal systems and went to work, searching for information on Knighton. If he was going to be working with the man, he was going to find out everything there was to know about him. Fuck if he’d stumble around like some newbie and let Knight get the better of him all the time.

Honorary Blogger Elizabeth Noble: When Stories Collide + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

When Stories Collide

by Elizabeth Noble

I had the idea for Jewel Cave, along with the title, probably a good year before I wrote Run for the Roses, book 1 of Circles. I’d originally intended to write them as separate, unrelated stories. However, as often happens to me, Wyatt and Val had another story in them to tell. A Barlow Lens (book #2) is actually two books in one, and Wyatt and Val are one set of MCs.

When I was planning out A Barlow Lens I thought having a series of mystery/suspense books would be fun and interesting. At first I thought to keep Wyatt and Val as the main characters. I wrote Griff and Clint in as minor characters. They appear together in one scene. Griff is in a second scene and has phone conversations with Wyatt.

As I was kicking around ideas for the series I decided to have different main characters/different couples in each book. Some of the books are a who-done-it murder mystery type of story. Other stories, such as Jewel Cave, are suspense and the crimes are not murder.

What links all the books in the series is one of the main characters is in some branch of law enforcement. In the United States and Canada there are hundreds to choose from! I realized I could introduce characters as minor players in one book, and then write their story in the following book.

I already have series with the same main characters book to book. I wanted to write a series that would feature different main characters, but had a common theme. I may at some point circle back to some of the characters. That is an option I’m keeping open.

In Jewel Cave we briefly meet Mason Arquette, who is a United States National Park Services Ranger. I was surprised at the varied duties of rangers and Mason will be a main character in book #4, Gone Away.

Another feature of the series in general is they are all romances, but the type of romance varies from book to book. In Run for the Roses it’s a budding romance between Wyatt and Val. Their love affair is further developed in A Barlow Lens, and the second set of main characters meet and fall in love. The story of Philip and Tom is told in A Barlow Lens. In Jewel Cave, Griff and Clint have been together for ten years, so their romance/relationship is well established. The romance part of that story is the two of them remembering why they fell in love in the first place and how deeply they know one another. In Gone Away, the couple know one another, had a brief fling previously and then rekindle their romance.

The final thing that ties all the books in the series are the titles. Each one of the titles tells us something about the book. A common nickname for the Kentucky Derby is ‘run for the roses’, a Barlow lens is a piece of telescope equipment that enhances viewing and in doing so lets us look back in time. Jewel Cave National Monument is a real cave system in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

About Elizabeth Noble

Elizabeth Noble started telling stories before she actually knew how to write, and her family was very happy when she learned to put words on a page. Those words turned into fan fiction that turned into a genuine love of M/M romance fiction. Being able to share her works with Dreamspinner is really a dream come true. She has a real love for a good mystery complete with murder and twisty plots as well as all things sci-fi, futuristic, and supernatural and a bit of an unnatural interest in a super-volcano in Wyoming.

Elizabeth has three grown children and is now happily owned by an adorable mixed breed canine princess named Rosie, and two cats, Murphy and Yeti. She lives in her native northeast Ohio, the perfect place for gardening, winter and summer sports (go Tribe!). When she’s not writing she’s working as a veterinary nurse, so don’t be surprised to see her men with a pet or three who are a very big part of their lives.

Redemption by Viki Lyn and Vina Grey: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Redemption

by Viki Lyn and Vina Grey

Uri pulled back from Michael’s grasp. “You can’t ask this of me.”

He couldn’t believe Michael’s complete lack of compassion. It had taken him years to rouse any interest in life. At firsthe’d blanketed his grief in fury. Slowly, his anger died. He was too mentally exhausted to hold on to his rage. Now all he felt was indifference.

Michael’s voice penetrated Uri’s thoughts. “You are our most gifted empath. And that’s not all—”

“To hell with that. We’re all empathic.”

Michael dryly chuckled, rolling his eyes at Uri’s cuss word.

Angels rarely gave in to their anger, but Uri had too much at stake to agree to the Vox Dei’s request. Didn’t Michael know how much it’d crack the fragile ice around his heart if he were to see Razi again? Since his lover’s death, and that’s how heregarded it, he’d burrowed deep within the Libraire, researching ways to bring Razi back to him.

He often wondered how far he’d go—what dark arts he might employ. Years later, he still hadn’t found a solution.

Honorary Blogger Kate Fierro: From a Fantasy to True Love – A Learning Process + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

From a Fantasy to True Love – A Learning Process

by Kate Fierro

Every relationship has the potential to be a learning experience. We discover things about ourselves and our partners, and we learn to fit together in unique ways that will never be exactly the same in any other relationship. We grow and mature as we learn, and so do our emotions. We may not, technically, learn to love – I believe that’s an ability inherent to human nature – but we do learn about love and relationships. Or, if we flip it: our partners and lovers won’t teach us how to love or how to feel love, but they may just teach us something about our emotions.

Love Starved starts with a simple, yet seemingly impossible request: “Show me what it’s like to feel loved.” Micah, a successful man in his late twenties, doesn’t ask the escort he hires to teach him how to feel love – he just wants one night to experience what he’d always imagined as that perfect romantic state of being “loved, wanted, cared for, like [he’s] the center of someone’s universe.” What he ultimately gets from the whole experiment is so much more than that, and yet not what he’d been picturing at all.

When I was writing Love Starved, I wanted to play with the concept of fantasies – things we imagine, often in great detail; things we dream of, and maybe assume we can never have – and how, if we decide to pursue these fantasies, they can turn out different from what we visualized. It’s true both in regard to sexual fantasies (someone getting aroused by the idea of a BDSM scene or a threesome may not actually enjoy it if they try it in reality) and dreams connected with other areas of our lives. Dreams and fantasies are, after all, subjective, idealized things.

Micah comes into his arrangement with Angel with certain preconceptions about love – beliefs based on literature and pop culture, on observing other relationships around him, as well as on his own limited experiences. He hires Angel, certain he knows what he wants. And he does, in a very narrow way. But during the course of the story, he gets so much more than that, and learns not just about feeling love, but about giving it as well.

So yes, learning and teaching things about love may be considered one of the themes in my book, but I wouldn’t say it’s about teaching anyone how to feel love. Rather, it’s about showing what love can be and how many different forms it can take; that it’s not a one-size-fits-all, unchanging thing. And in the end, the teaching goes both ways. Both men show each other things about love that they’ve never believed possible; things that change them and their lives.

I hoped to capture the personal and emotional growth that comes from all kinds of good, solid relationships between people – not just romantic relationships, but friendships, work and family relations, too. Have I succeeded? I will leave that for the readers to judge.

Honorary Blogger K.A. Merikan: No Matter What + Excerpt & Giveaway!

NMW5b

We finished The Devil’s Ride with so many new book ideas. Some secondary characters simply have stories that need to be told, and it’s something almost impossible to plan. We knew we wanted to come up with a book about Ghost before we even finished TDR, but the idea for the story only came after we wrote the last few chapters. Ghost does mingle with bikers, he loves bikes, but he’s not a ruthless hardass like the others. He’s a good guy, who wants to do the right thing but keeps getting pulled into morally grey situations, because of his friendships and family connections. Even more so when he gets to fight for his and Luca’s love in No Matter What. Will he be able to stay true to what he believes in among all the mayhem?

About No Matter What

NoMatterWhat-400— A gentle heart has no place in an outlaw’s chest —

Ghost. Not a member of the Coffin Nails MC. Not a doctor anymore. Not gay.
Luca. Bent, not broken. Will not let go of Ghost. No matter what.

Ghost finds out the hard way that people you meet online aren’t always who they seem to be. When he met ‘Zara’ five years ago, they became inseparable. She’s been with him through the rough and the smooth. He’s been there for her when her abusive boyfriend had her in tears.

She is The One, and despite all his friends considering him crazy, Ghost is about to propose.

But ‘Zara’ turns out to be Luca, and Luca is most definitely a guy. Yet Luca is the same person with big dark eyes, so desperate to be saved that Ghost can’t help but fall head first.

Luca’s so-called boyfriend is not just abusive. He is a Sicilian drug lord, a man dangerous and ruthless. If Ghost is to ever save the person who wreaked havoc on his heart, he has to make a deal with the Coffin Nails MC. But being a member is a destiny he’s always tried to avoid. And when a life of violence becomes too much to bear, he might be the one needing Luca to catch him when he falls.

Themes: Outlaw motorcycle club, criminal activity, hurt/comfort, abuse, catfishing, independence, sexual orientation issues, mafia, PTSD.

WARNING: Adult content. Explicit gay sex, strong language, violence, potentially triggering sexual abuse scenes. Reader discretion advised.

An Excerpt from No Matter What

A photo came through. It was a red square plate of some vegetable rolls with a brown sauce. Ghost raised his head to have an even better look around. He frowned at the plate in front of the guy, and had a discreet look at him. He was close enough to see it was a very similar dish, but that could be a coincidence― Ghost’s heart stopped beating completely when an onyx bracelet slid lower down the guy’s forearm.

And then it hit him that the guy actually had a similar coloring to Zara in the picture: dark olive skin, wavy black hair that reached past his shoulders, and dark eyes. Only other than that, he was nothing like Zara. No softness in him, just firm jawlines and broad shoulders hidden in a coffee-colored shirt with rolled-up sleeves. As striking as he was, he was most definitely not the girl from the picture.

Ghost got up even though his legs were like made out of Jell-O. Five years. Five fucking years. This meant he’d had webcam sex with a guy. Many times. He couldn’t breathe, the ring in his pocket somehow burning like acid. How could he have been so stupid? He made his way toward the table as if it were a lucid dream. A nightmare he was about to wake up from.

With the young guy busy with his cell phone, one of the middle-aged businessmen noticed Ghost first. He straightened up and narrowed his eyes, tapping the chopsticks against his plate.

“Can we help you?” he asked in a heavily accented voice.

‘Zara’, or whatever his name was, raised his eyes, and the small smile he was sporting fell from his lips like slush on a sunny day. God, he was even prettier up close, with thick eyebrows and a straight, shapely nose. His mouth dropped open, but he made no sound as he stared at Ghost, wide-eyed.

Ghost ignored the older man, and looked straight into the eyes of someone whom he knew so well, yet didn’t know at all. “How could you do this to me?” was all he managed to choke out.

Honorary Blogger Remmy Duchene: Coming Out + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Coming Out

by Remmy Duchene

You see, I never had the hardship of coming out – for my regular readers, you know I’m a straight female who is a rampant supporter of the LGBT community. So I will never know the true hardness of it all. But I did have a friend come out to me and I do remember the fear that I saw in their eyes.

As a Jamaican, my people’s music is full of homophobic lyrics that as I grew older and look back on them, I was ashamed to remember I used to sing those songs—ever. When you’re a kid, you sing things or watch things and you don’t really understand what you’re singing—all you know is that the beat is awesome and makes you dance. At thirteen, I moved to Canada and was immersed in a new culture, filled with all kinds of people —my mentality and view of things changed. For a while, I had my head so far into books, I didn’t notice much of anything. Once in a while I would look up long enough to breathe, eat something, interact with friends and family but that was about it. Then one day I put down the book and took a hard look around me and I did not like what I saw.

When I was about fifteen, I met my first out friend.  He was sixteen and terrified of telling me he was gay. Why? I’m Jamaican and he was scared that I would hate him. He wasn’t the first person to think that. The first time, I was offended he’d even think I’d hate him just because he was gay. But then I went home and had a conversation with another friend who pointed out that singers like Buju Banton and Beenie Man are from Jamaica. They are the face of the Jamaican people in the media, and people outside looking in believe they speak for all Jamaicans.

Right then I began thinking about it—I began asking questions, educating myself. It didn’t take much. I merely talked to my friends and their friends, and then it was all clear to me. Coming out shouldn’t be such an end-of-the-world experience. Hell, there shouldn’t be a thing called “coming out.” To me, people should just be able to be who they without fear of being hurt or those they love not to love them anymore. You see, there is so much fear and anguish behind actually telling someone you’re gay. I could not believe it all. It both stunned me and broke my heart.

When I was writing my character Kofi, I cried. There was a strange sense of sadness there. Though Carter (Kofi’s brother from Book one: CIRO) is gay, there was still some hesitation and confusion for Kofi. I hope, when people read OSAKI and see what Kofi goes through they will be a little more understanding toward the plight of people having to come out. I hope the thought “you’re gay just tell people” will stop, because it is not as easy as that.

Why did I write this post? I was sitting around wondering what to blog about – and I saw this article where a woman outed a teenager before he was ready. I am not in agreement with that and think that is one of the worst things you could do to a person.

Please, be a kind shoulder and encourage someone. That could be the difference between their happiness and tears.

Hugs,

Remmy Duchene

An Excerpt from Osaki

Kofi flopped to his bed and clasped his hands in his lap. He stared at his fingers for it was easier than meeting Osaki’s brown stare. “I believe you.”

“Please look at…” Osaki stopped and looked up. “Not now…”

“What’s the matter?”

“I am being summoned. Please do not leave here. I must speak with you.”

Though Kofi wasn’t sure where Osaki thought he would go, he nodded and took a breath as the shiver stepped toward him. It seemed Osaki thought better at what he was thinking of doing.

“Can you call Ciro and ask him to bring Carter here?”

“For you, Kofi, anything.” Was Osaki’s simply reply then he was gone. Kofi exhaled long and hard, feeling his body throb sweetly.

He stood by the window, staring out, wishing Osaki was there but happy he wasn’t. Those were the contradictions going through him. He stood there for a while, feeling as if he moved his legs would buckle if he moved.

“Kofi?”

He swung around to see, heart pounding for he thought for sure one of those stupid shivers were in the room with him. It took a moment for his brain to recognize Carter and Ciro standing there. He watched Ciro kiss his brother, waved to him and shimmered away. Carter instantly rushed to Kofi’s side and grasped his shoulders. “Bro—what’s going on? Are you okay? And what happened to your arm?”

“Rogue Shiver attack—came after Osaki and got me.”

“Where was Osaki?”

“Give him break, huh bro?” Kofi pleaded, exhausted. “He did the best he could.”

“But…”

“You know Osaki wouldn’t intentionally let anything happen to me. He loves Ciro. Ciro loves you. You love me—see how that works?” Kofi inhaled, weak with the tension in his heart and spine. “He protected me but that’s not why I called you here. Something happened and I don’t know how to deal with it.”

“Tell me.”

Kofi shook his head and fell into Carter’s chest.  He held on tightly while Carter rubbed his back and returned the hug. The last time he felt this down was the day he found out he’d failed his physical and couldn’t join the NYPD. “I—I don’t know what’s happening. I really need you…”

“Sure, Kofe—whatever you want. But you have to tell me what’s wrong. You said something happened—let’s start there.”

“I-um…” Kofi swallowed. “My body is rebelling. I can’t control it. You can’t hate me for what I’m about to tell you.”

“Damn it to hell, Kofi Arturo Olabasu!”

“I think  I’m gay.”
