GRL Blog Tour: C.R. Guiliano – Coming Out of My Shell

Coming Out of My Shell

by C.R. Guiliano

As many know, I’m one of those introverted, shy authors. Which begs to ask, why all the conferences/retreats this year? Simple, to get my name out there. I have already been to two conferences and one workshop in 2014 and much to my surprise, at RainbowCon, I was told “everyone knows who you are”. My first thought? Then how come I’m not selling more books? Their answer? “Because you are all over social media.” Now, I wonder if that is a good thing, or a bad thing.

Yes, I’m on social media a lot, primarily Facebook and I wonder if I should be embarrassed by that. I’m a hermit at home. I don’t go anywhere, except to the store for necessities. There are no opportunities to meet new people. So, my friends are all online, many of whom I’ve now met in person. Most are on Facebook. Hence, I spend a lot of time there. So, is it a good thing to be so active? Does that get my name around? Will that help when I have new releases? I hope so, but that has yet to be proven.

And then, I wonder. Perhaps it’s not a good thing to be on social media so much. After all, my time would be better spent writing. Don’t get me wrong, I write a lot, but maybe not enough. Will I ever be as prolific as some authors I know? No, despite the fact that I write fast. My plot bunnies ensure that I have multiple manuscripts to work on, but that doesn’t mean I will be finishing them in days instead of weeks or months. I learned long ago, quality over quantity and I hold to that belief.

Thanks to a windfall, I am able to write full time now, and attend more conferences than ever. Which leads me back to my initial comment. Even introverted and shy, I know that I have to put myself out there, be seen, interact with readers, to make a name for myself. It’s good business. It’s also extremely hard when you want to hide from the spotlight. I have another workshop, and two more conferences, plus two Pride events I’m going to before the year is out. More opportunities to put myself out there, and put up the mask I must wear to be able to do that.

I confess, I tend to rely on friends at these events to help me. Is that wrong? Probably. They are there for the same reasons I am and many are as introverted as myself. It takes a lot of energy to cover the nervousness, to hide the anxiousness, to shield the sensitivity. Most of us can only handle large crowds, and that spotlight, in small doses.

But what I have discovered about myself, is that I can do it. I can hide my jitters, and interact with others…and be a better person for it. I adore my readers, am floored when they come up to me and gush how much they like something I wrote. And I’m humbled by their enthusiasm. There is nothing like the butterfly feelings you get when someone praises you on something you did, that came naturally. I love to write, secretly, I think I’m pretty good at it. To get that validation from someone else? Priceless!

So, yes, I am traveling a lot this year, RainbowCon, Dreamspinner Workshop, OutlantaCon, Colorado Workshop, DragonCon and, of course, GayRomLit. I missed going to Atlanta for GRL 2013, and am looking forward to seeing many of my friends this year, and maybe a few new readers. My name is out there now, which means my mask will have to be firmly in place. I was an unknown at GRL 2012, having only been published for two years. I suspect, this year, it will be a bit different, because “everyone knows who you are”. I’m looking forward to seeing if that is, indeed, true.

Their Plane From Nowhere by Princess SO: Excerpt + Giveaway

An Excerpt from Their Plane From Nowhere

by Princess SO

Adventure is out there!” a child character’s voice called out with enthusiasm. And thus began a montage of Mr. Fredricksen’s life.

There was a reason he picked this one above all the others. Sure, Finding Nemo and that other one about the supersuits was pretty damned funny, but this one—about the boy growin’ up with his best friend, how they got married with a dream and grew old together—and mostly how life got in the way of their dream to Paradise Falls—had hit him so hard, it hung in his soul and on his skin like melted cheese, only it didn’t taste as good. Hoverin’ like smog. The more you noticed, the more you started to choke on it. And then, the next mornin’ when they’d went back to the hospital and his little Leanne handed over his first granddaughter, he’d looked up wearin’ the biggest grandpop smile only to see Gracie leerin’ at him with so much hatred and loathin’. It shouldn’t have been that way; it should have been the face of the man he loved. Earl’s heart shattered that very moment. So much time had been lost lettin’ life get in the way of his Paradise Falls. He’d nearly broke down just then, too happy to give over his granddaughter just yet and too heartbroken that Hank wasn’t with him to share in it, like he should’ah been.

He’d even walked over to the window, turning his back to the others, and cradling the tiny bundle against his face. He kissed her sweet pink head, and then used it to wipe the tears from his cheek.

Gracie got tired of waitin’ her turn and started puttin’ up a cussin’. She even pulled out the Lord’s name in vain. Earl just shut her out, still lookin’ out the window with his granddaughter and silently pointin’ out to the mountains in the distance to where Hank could be found, wipin’ another tear off with her fussy, little pink head.

Behind him, the cussing continued. To Earl it was just another sound that separated him from them while he drowned on the inside. He couldn’t count the times he’d heard it ’cause he did his best not to. Didn’t matter where they were either, he never answered, and he never shouted back at her. Just like that day at the hospital, he let Gracie continue on until Leanne snapped about the GD word. Earl’d said nothing. He never did. No matter what Gracie threw at him, he had learned a long time ago, he couldn’t shut her up, so—he shut her out.

Another Man’s Treasure by Lisa Henry & J.A. Rock: Excerpt + Giveaway

Hi! We’re Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock, authors of Another Man’s Treasure. We’re touring the web talking about our influences, our crazy ideas, this new book, and even giving you a sneak peek or two! And of course there’s a giveaway involved! Check out the bottom of this post to see how you can win.

Thanks so much to our host blogs for having us, and to everyone following the tour. Today we’d like to share a scene from Another Man’s Treasure. In this excerpt, Ilia shows his boyfriend Mikhail his new corset piercing:

blogger_bee_transExcerpt from Another Man’s Treasure

Ilia licked Mikhail’s jaw, then kept his tongue there for a moment as he grinned slowly. He looked up. “Take my shirt off.”

Mikhail’s brow furrowed.

“It’s your surprise. Take my shirt off.” Ilia raised his arms.

Mikhail walked behind him and lifted the hem of his shirt. The fabric stuck to Ilia’s body in places, and he wished he’d been able to clean up a little, but he didn’t think Mikhail would mind. Thought it was the rawness of what Ilia had done as much as the beauty that would impress him.

“Oh,” Mikhail said softly. He pulled Ilia’s shirt off, taking a moment to disentangle it from the necklaces, and tossed it onto the couch.

“You like?” Ilia glanced over his shoulder.

Mikhail was staring intently at the piercing. Slowly he kneeled behind Ilia on the hardwood floor. Breathed against the tender skin of his lower back. “Oh, Ilie.” Mikhail’s hands on Ilia’s hips. “Ohhh. What have you done?”

“You like it?” Doubt in Ilia’s tone now.

Mikhail’s thumbs skirted the lowest rings. Ilia flinched but didn’t move. Mikhail stood, his knees creaking, and Ilia turned to him.

Mikhail cupped his face and kissed him, long and slow. Paused and pressed his forehead to Ilia’s. “It hurts you.”

“Just for now.” Ilia fought a surge of panic. As much as he loved his power over Mikhail, as much pleasure as he took from doing things precisely his own way and trusting Mikhail to accept his choices, he did need Mikhail’s approval. Craved it in a way that felt novel, because the things he’d desired in the past had always been selfish, immediate wants, fueled by lust or anger. Now, he lived to make Mikhail happy. This man’s admiration, his love, was something lasting, something Ilia could sustain and nurture.

Mikhail’s breath smelled like coffee and mints. He kept his forehead against Ilia’s and said, “It’s so niiiiiiice.” He exhaled the last word, low and rumbling, almost like a snore.

Ilia grinned. “You think?”

“Yes, yes. You thought of me when you did it?”

“The whole time.”

“Ahhhhhh, ha ha ha…” Mikhail’s sigh turned to gentle laughter, and he swayed, moving his hands to the back of Ilia’s neck. “You know what this man likes.”

“I do.” Ilia whispered. He bumped his hips against Mikhail’s.

“I like beauty,” Mikhail said. “And self expression.”

“I know.”

“You. I like.”

“Yeah.”

Mikhail clapped one hand over Ilia’s ass, crushing their bodies together. He hooked his chin over Ilia’s shoulder, and Ilia hoped he was looking down at the laces. “You look like a present I get to unwrap.”

Ilia shifted his hips, getting jolt after jolt of heat when his cock rubbed Mikhail’s through their pants.

“Do it. Untie it.” Ilia’s arousal far outweighed the prospect of pain.

Mikhail drummed Ilia’s ass lightly for a few seconds then tugged the hair at his nape with his other hand. “Get on the couch.”

Ilia sprawled facedown, ignoring the rip of pain across his skin. Mikhail got on the cushion behind him and moved between his legs. He cupped his hand under Ilia, rubbing the seam of his jeans into his cock. Hummed his approval when Ilia ground against his palm.

Big hands. Mikhail had big hands. That was the first thing Ilia had noticed about him. Big, but not clumsy. They were elegant. The sort of hands that could play a piano concerto, Ilia imagined. The sort of hands that could perform delicate surgery. The sort of hands that could take a boy apart, and did, every single night.

About Another Man’s Treasure

Another Man's TreasureIlia Porter is Chechen mob boss Mikhail Kadyrov’s greatest treasure. After leaving home at eighteen to escape his verbally abusive father, beautiful, selfish Ilia has lived with Mikhail, proud of his ability to bring such a powerful man to his knees to worship. But when Ilia’s father, a police captain, kills Mikhail in a raid, Ilia’s world falls apart.

Entering to pick up the pieces is Mikhail’s younger brother, Nick—impulsive, power-hungry, and dangerous. When Nick tells Ilia he’s taking everything that belonged to Mikhail—including Ilia—Ilia is too lost in grief to fight. Nick holds Ilia prisoner in the apartment Ilia once shared with Mikhail and grooms him for a very important mission: to kill Ilia’s father and avenge Mikhail’s death.

Ilia wants no part in the plot, but being Nick’s ally is preferable to being Nick’s victim, so he begins to warp himself into the monster Nick wants him to be. Hope arrives when Nick takes another captive: Patrick, a shy massage therapist who’s stronger than he seems. Patrick and Ilia must join forces to escape Nick—and to keep each other whole as Nick does everything in his power to break them.

About the Authors

Lisa Henry lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

Q&A with Dan Skinner + Excerpt (NSFW) & Giveaway!

TPoD Blog Tour Banner

Q&A with Dan Skinner

What costume would you wear that would truly show your hidden personality?

A costume of Dan Skinner.

Why the lycra/spandex fixation? I know there’s a story there…

First guy I saw at my local pool was wearing one and I thought I’d die.

In no more than two sentences, can you describe yourself to a complete stranger?

I’m the one the extraterrestrial abducted and threw back out. And as the spaceship doors were closing you could hear them screaming, “And for God’s sake, clean the Probe!”

What is the most sentimental thing someone gave you that you cherish to this day?

The  answer to this question has been sealed in a document.

How much do you run on an average day?

I average no more than 10 miles a day. When I’m stressed that number goes up.

Do you have a plan to gain the weight you’ve lost lately? Does it include cheesecake?

If I like the way I fit in clothes, I stay with that weight.  If I want to gain weight it will be with some Old Vienna Hot Corn chips. lol

What is your favorite guilty pleasure food? The one your trainer would highly disapprove of?

See answer above.

Your top five recommendations of gay films please.

Shelter

Prayers For Bobby

Brokeback Mountain

Beautiful Thing

Eating Out (original)

What is the meanest thing you’ve done to someone in an argument or fight?

Broke a coffee table over them.

What song do you have to hear only once to get stuck in your head for an entire day?

Any friggin’ Gaga song.

I’d empty my bank account and take out a loan to have sex with____. Why?

Prince Harry. Because he’s mine anyway. Everyone knows that.

If you could wish one celebrity into the cornfield, who would it be and why?

Sarah Palin. Don’t even get me started why.

Your models all look like they have so much fun during your shoots. Do they? An do you?

Them, yes. Me. No. I sweat bullets.

Has it been difficult to stick with your recently adopted NBW (no bad words) policy? Explain a little bit about what NBW is.

NBW stands for No Bad Words. My trainer believes that bad words create bad events. I don’t speak them But I think them. I purge them on my runs.

What is the largest, um… attribute you have seen on a model?

Enough that I would never even attempt it.

On a scale of 1-10, ten being a completely controlling perfectionist, how would your models rate your determination to get every little thing perfect in every shot?

1000

I’ve seen one black model in your past work. Why haven’t there been more?

I try to get them. But there are very few in the Midwest. When I search the model sites I see tons of black and ethnic models on the east and west coast. I’m always looking tho.

It is said that every traumatic event in life has the potential to make you bitter or better. You seem to have made a conscious choice to make yourself better through this difficult past year. Do you struggle with that sometimes? And how do you get yourself back on track after a bitter moment?

I still struggle. I’m not so much bitter as I am disgusted. Probably more with myself than anyone. I feel very duped.

During the 2012 Presidential election, you were pretty vocal regarding your beliefs and opinions. You have a bigger platform now that you have two successful books and more photography work than ever. Do you plan to be as outspoken in 2016?

Always. This country needs to continue to move forward. As long as we have a party that lives and functions in a repressed past we have to make certain they never have a voice in lawmaking again. If they can’t move forward they need to get off the train.

What is the largest group of models you have had in one shoot?

Eight. Will never do it again. Too ADHD to put up with the scramble.

Why Cerberus as a company name? (This is the mythical three-headed hellhound who guards the entrance to the underworld)

It was one of the first sketches I ever made as a child that was pretty decent. The other was Dean Martin. So Cerberus it was.

If you could write a letter to your 18 year old self, what would you say?

Don’t get married twice. And check out the guy next to you in history class in 11th grade!

Excerpt from The Price of Dick

So there I was, quickly regressing to puberty, sitting in a sauna with the object of my lust. Looking at his thick muscular legs, broad shoulders and other weight-developed bulges properly bulging and glistening with a sheen of hot sweat, I wanted to eat him alive. We soon exited the sauna together.

Unburdening myself of common sense was an easy task standing in the shower with him. Every inch of his make-me-growl masculinity, covered in blond fur, ass like two ripe honeydews just daring me not to look when he turned his back. I caught a quick glimpse of that gloriously long, circumcised, purple-capped cock and balls hanging between his legs under an unpruned patch of dark pubes. I remember thinking I hadn’t ever bought that much meat in a delicatessen but I still bet I could eat it all in one sitting. It took every bit of restraint I possessed to not pop wood in that shower. The mating dance was an endurance test. Think tearing down the Washington Monument using only your mind.

He invited me out for a drink this time, and we drove to Houlihan’s again. It was a Friday and the line out the door consisted of families with brats and people with an hour to waste after work. I suggested we get a six-pack and go to my apartment, which luckily, was only three blocks away, with a liquor store right on the way.

I’m sure it wasn’t in his mind, but it was in mine that this was a hookup. And I’d like to think he wasn’t completely naive about my intentions. I was in testosterone hyper-drive. I got him to my apartment and we drank and talked like good ole buds. He was comfortable telling me about his recent college life, the break up with the girl of his dreams who left him for another man because she had cheated on him and was pregnant. His heartbreak. All the things I couldn’t have cared less about—good riddance to anything that would have been competition anyway. Dick got into his high school days of playing football and wrestling, and I sat there picturing that mass of muscled man-ass crammed into a singlet, me trying to pin him on a mat with my head pressed deep into a musk-reeking ass crack.

He was a frat boy. I should have guessed. They all had a certain look to them. And his frat brothers were his best friends in the world and meant everything to him. He missed their daily camaraderie. I wondered if he’d jacked off with any of them. Used the fraternity paddle in an un-fraternity-like manner. You’ve seen the porn. Don’t tell me your mind didn’t go there.

It was a disappointingly platonic get-together, like any dull straight boys could have had, but I learned a lot about him. How many couples fuck on a first date anyway, right? I consoled myself with that lame excuse. Shame on me—I should have paid close attention to the story he shared with me that night. While in his freshman year of college, his parents tried to surprise him with a friendly unannounced visit. Lo and behold, in his dorm room a snooping mother had found a used condom in his wastebasket. She collapsed into pious, Catholic tears and left before he got back to his room. A few days later she sent him a two page, single-spaced, typewritten letter preaching to him about the Catholic stand on premarital sex, and especially condemning the use of that horrendous tool of the devil, the seed-killing prophylactic. Don’t worry. Those facetious words weren’t hers. I paraphrased. This boy was more browbeaten by mommy than Norman Bates.

Didn’t matter to me that he was a mommy’s boy. He could have been wearing prison orange and had the tattooed tear of a brazen killer on his cheek and it wouldn’t have stopped me wanting him. That he was double-fisted clutching onto his “I’m so straight” persona with his stories, I found cute because I was reading something different in body language and eye contact. He was in my company for a reason. I thought he was just a bit backward about the how-tos of getting naked with another dude. I’d get him there…eventually. I felt it in my bones. One in particular.

So our little beer-drinking, life-sharing, guy get-together ended with him thanking me for a nice evening and shaking my hand at the door.

In my head I fucked that butt so hard I made myself cry.

About Dan Skinner

I’d already been in the photography business for too many years to count, shooting covers for hetero romance covers when I had my epiphany (ten years ago now) to shoot gay book covers and make them as acceptable and mainstream as the hetero ones. It was a big risk and I was told by many people, especially people who advised me financially, that it might not be a profitable thing to do, and could quite possibly ruin my reputation. But I was tired of seeing the proliferation of covers featuring a man and woman, the cologne and perfume ads featuring a man and a woman… every ad under the sun – only featuring a man and a woman, and knowing that only one side of life was being spoon fed to us by the media as the acceptable aspiration and ideal. In fact, it made me angry and crazy, and determined to do something about it. We were here… didn’t anyone see us?!!

I had several things working against me. The m/m fiction genre was just beginning to come into its own, but television and the entertainment industry were slowly allowing us into their vision as folks who existed right alongside them, and I knew the flux and flow of gay literature was going to eventually change. Will and Grace helped that. Brokeback Mountain helped that. So I had hope and crossed my fingers that I made a good choice as well as a conscientious one.

Along with that, I had to find guys daring enough to pose with each other in photos mimicking the same love and adoration as was seen in every Harlequin cover since time immemorial… They had to embrace and kiss and portray romance… between two people of the same gender. So finding the guys was going to be a chore… and finding guys in the Bible belt of the country, the Midwest, was going to be even tougher. But I did it.

Revenge is mine… the dbag’s bed has been christened by the models during a shoot!!

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Inez Kelley + Giveaway!

HC: I just recently read The Bastard by Inez Kelley and loved everything about it.  Its the first book in her new series The Baddest Boys in History, and you know what that means?  Now I have to wait forever for the next book!  So in the mean time, I’ve harassed Inez just enough to where she agreed to answer a few questions…

Interview Banner

HC: First, can you tell us a little about your new book The Bastard, the first book in your new series The Baddest Boys in History?

IK: This was a story I wasn’t sure anyone would like. One part history, some not-so-nice-guys and a few weird angels. Toss in some sex, a few religious tones and stir with a big old romance stick. But I took a chance and it does seem to have hit a vibe with many people. The book has been likened to the Old Skool BDB by JR Ward, Kenyon’s ‘DARK HUNTERS’, Showalter’s ‘LORDS OF The UNDERWORLD’ and Neil Gaiman’s ‘AMERICAN GODS’.

While I have read Ward’s BDB, I’ve only read two books by Kenyon, and have never read Showalter or Gaiman. I just wrote what I wanted to read.

HC: It becomes obvious pretty early on in The Bastard that many, if not most of the characters are inspired by real, remarkable people from the past.  Are you a history junkie or what?  Where did this idea come from and how much research have you already put in to creating this series?  And do you worry about the liberties that you take about what we all believe to be fact about these people and their history?

IK: I am a history junkie! I hated high school history class which was just memorization of dates and battles spewed in a monotone structure, but college and personal study let me dig deeper and explore other aspects of history, the real stories and facts, not just the dates.

The story idea came from a two people, friends from two different parts of my life. One was a writer friend who suggested that a certain bad boy in history (that is not included in my series – but I reserve the right to write about him later) was beyond redemption. At the same time, a friend from a parenting board asked me on a ‘books we’re reading’ thread why all bad boys series had to be vampires (it did seem that way years ago). Those two statements merged in my brain and I started researching possible characters for a vague idea. Three years later, here we are.

As for how much research, about three years worth before the book went live and it is still ongoing. I wanted to make sure the plot lines and story arc in my head were logical and feasible. I have a file on my hard drive that is about 400,000 words long of just information, on every aspect of the series. Less than a quarter of it will make it into the story as recognizable history but I’ll know it and it helped shape the characters. Some of it appears but it small tidbits, like the décor of Erik’s apartment.

The liberties I took never bothered me. I tried to stay very true to what ‘history’ tells us about these people but history can be very vague and very contradictory. I exploited that. I was able to take more liberties with Zale, Myth and Nomad but even then, there was an accepted pool of mythology and customs. So I adhered to as much of that as I could. It was a little like getting a coloring book with basic simple drawings and it was my job to make that plain round apple look life-like.

HC: You probably have already recognized this, but here at TBG we read and review predominately LGBTQ stories.  So I have to point out that Rex is an out and proud bisexual male.  Have you explored pairing him with a man for his HEA?  And if not, can we expect to see other LGBTQ characters later on in the series?

IK: I love Rex. He is sexual, period. There is a scene in upcoming The ADDICT that shows him in a sexual act with a man but ultimately his destiny is with a woman. Even then, she is unique. Her name is Tia and, in her first life, she dressed and behaved as a man. Being a woman is what got her killed and she isn’t too keen on turning into a girly Mary Sunshine now.

Her character is as far from Lacy’s as imaginable. Rex asks her if she is a lesbian. She replies she has never been to Lesbos. In her time, lesbians came from Lesbos and there was no sexual connotation of that word. The words aitis or trepesthai would have made more sense to her. She is just not interested in sex with either gender… at first.

One thing I found during my research that was interesting is that homosexuality/bisexuality was vastly more accepted in ancient times than more modern eras. Also, different cultures viewed it differently but few considered it outright wrong. Not to say that it was completely accepted as the norm, but it doesn’t seem to have carried the same stigma as it does/did in more modern history.

Just like nudity, it was just something there. You might not parade it but you weren’t ashamed of it. There were social obligations to meet, but if one could fulfill those, then the fact that their preference was for the same gender was pointless.

We meet openly gay and bi Righteous later in the series as well.

Although Rex is openly bi, he is not the only main character who has engaged in homosexual acts. More of that will be revealed as the series progresses. I do want to mention that history colors things. For example, once imprisoned, Joan of Arc was promised her freedom if she ceased dressing/behaving as a male. She tried but couldn’t conform and reverted to her male attire, knowing full well it would send her to her death. Could she have been transgender? To me it is possible. And in my mind, she is not the only historical figure who that label might apply to.

HC: I know this series is all about “the baddest boys in history”, but will that include any of the Righteous? Because those boys are pretty bad themselves!

IK: Yes, we meet several. Some are jerks, some are not. And not all are ‘boys’. There were female Forsaken at one time and we see some female Righteous in the series.

HC: In The Bastard, the story is set in West Virginia, but the Forsaken Leap around the world to faraway places like Israel and Nicaragua in their fight against the Third.  What kind of exotic locales can we expect to see in the future?

IK: Oh, many. One underlying concept of this series is that all mankind is threatened by Samael, not just the USA. So of course, the story must venture outside the US district. Two places I have tentatively placed scenes in are Cambodia and Madrid.

HC: Can you share with us some of your future plans with the series (with as little spoiler detail as possible)? How many books do you already have planned out and will that complete the series?

IK: 1) Omen is not a shifter and will never be human, but he is more than you see.

2) One Forsaken goes stark-raving mad, as in break out the straight jacket, foaming at the mouth, shove his ass in a padded room.

3) Samael becomes a Daddy… and that ain’t a good thing.

4) There will be six books in the series. I don’t see myself going further than six. Too many series go on too long. I know each main couple and the full over-arcing plotline. The individual romance stories are sketchy after book 3 but that is okay at this point. They will come to me.

HC: I expect that you already have it planned out, but I just want to say that I want Zale’s book NOW!  He has to be the baddest of the bad in my opinion and I can’t wait to see all that ice melt.

IK: Zale is like an onion. Too strong, too harsh and too bitter but as you slowly peel away the layers, the sweeter, milder inside is revealed. But then again, he is an asshole and there is lots more of that to see.

HC: And my final question is just for fun: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

IK: I just moved 700 miles and sold most of my old office furniture. I plan to redo a new office as soon as I can. For now, I write on a desktop sitting on an old scarred and nicked computer table. I have about seven little plastic geckos I call my Muses that keep me company. I normally write in silence and prefer to write at night. I am mostly nocturnal, a hold over for working midnight shift for over a decade as a 911 Dispatcher. I write in the dark, with one lamp burning. Too much sunlight kills my thought train for some reason.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

GRL!!! I am going to GRL as a Supporting Author.

At first, I was yes! And now, it’s more like, holy crap what have I gotten myself into!

Full story – I’d signed up to be a reader because, face it, I only have a few short stories and one novel published. I could go and mingle with the crowd, meet all of the awesome people I had made friends with online. Party Time!

Of course, I had signed up for the wait list for a Supporting Author, and lo and behold, before long, I was in as a Supporting Author. And still, it was party time, until the excitement died down and the realization of what that meant kicked in. So, to understand why I am now getting a bit anxious, I’ll let you in on a bit about me.

I’m not a very social person on the whole. If I’m not at work, I’m at home. I have so much writing and reading to do! I am someone who can stay home every day, all day. Don’t get me wrong, I love people, but in a crowd, I’m the watcher, the fringe person and the smart ass. When I say something, it’s usually because I see a funny way (funny to me that is, lol) of looking at something someone says. Also, I have the attention span of a gnat…seriously. Too much going on in my head! My family complains I live there 90% of the time. I disagree…maybe 80%.

I also can organize my thoughts and process information better visually than through auditory means. I am constantly looking for input that is word based. If you and I could sit and have a conversation by texting back and forth, I would probably be more witty and charming—in my opinion. When I tell people who know me about this, they disagree, state that I am articulate, and speak very well. Years of practice and they don’t see the mass of neurons firing and bumping into one another as they scramble to get the words out!

Another reason I am wondering what I have done to myself is, that while I have many friends online who accept me for who I am as a person,  I know there will be others disappointed with the vision they have of me in their head and what they see. Past experiences tell me this is a possibility. I have always been of the mind that who I’ve chosen to be, is who I am, and the expectations of others don’t play into that. As one of my online friends stated recently, people who question who I am, don’t know me well enough to get my story. See past the exterior and let’s get acquainted first and then ask me questions. It’s the respect I would give anyone I meet as well.

Okay! Enough reasons why I’m going to sweat bullets as GRL comes closer.

Here are some reasons I am looking forward to GRL:

Hundreds of people who love M/M romance in the same place!!

Readers (of which I am one) everywhere!!

M/M authors in person and not just online!!

Me fanboying all over my favorite authors and getting autographs!!

A vacation!!

If you are reading this and are going to GRL, find me, JC Wallace, and say hi! I would love to meet you! If you can’t get to GRL, stop by my links below and say hi as well! I love to talk to people who love M/M!

About Dare to Love Forever

Dare To Love ForeverCarson Locke is a Tabula Rosa vampire—a dangerous rarity in the world of vampires. With one bite, he can wipe clean a vampire’s mind, creating a mindless drone. Because of this, Carson has spent his entire twenty-three years sheltered at home. That changes when his entire family is murdered. Now on the run and near death, Carson meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, a beautiful vampire who tries to heal him. In doing so, Carson is bonded to the vampire and turned into something the vampire world has never seen. When Carson is poisoned, he believes that someone wants him dead as well, however there are greater plans for Carson put into motion hundreds of years before his birth.

Lincoln is a Sanatore vampire with the ability to heal other vampires. He heads a team in the New Vampire Justice police force in Utica, NY. Late one night, he is called to a local Vampire Blood Market where a starving Tabula Rosa vampire is about to be executed by one of his officers. Feeling a strong connection to Carson, Lincoln wants to heal the broken man despite knowing the risk in doing so. Healing Carson could destroy Lincoln and cost him the chance to love again. What Lincoln finds is that there is a greater evil threatening to take Carson from him.

Can two vampires who have loved and painfully lost in the past, learn to trust one another, defeat the evil rising against them, and dare to love forever?

An Excerpt from Dare to Love Forever

Carson Locke was starving. Thoughts of veins and warm blood flowing though arteries clouded his thinking. His stomach had hollowed. His bones protruded and his muscles shook from weakness. His self-control, held by a fragile thread, stretched to the breaking point. When it snapped, he’d turn into the monster he’d avoided becoming for over twenty-three years.

He needed food. He needed blood. Now.

Despite crouching behind a Dumpster in the dark, the cold wind reached Carson, biting at his thin skin. Ten days. Ten days since he’d last eaten. Ten days too long for a young vampire. Ten days since he’d fled his home. Ten days since his mother and brother and uncle had been slaughtered and he’d run for his life. They were all dead because of what he was. Choking back a sob, he forced himself to focus on the back door of the building he’d been watching.

This was his last chance. If he couldn’t get the blood he needed here, that last thread of self-control would snap and he’d attack someone. The memory of the last time he’d been forced to bite—the screaming, the wide, vacant staring eyes, the nothingness—still haunted him. Carson squeezed his eyes tight and drew in several deep, steadying breaths. This task was too important to mar with past horrors he couldn’t rectify.

Two women bundled against the cold and a large, dark-haired man exited the back door he’d been staking out. As the women shuffled off to their cars, the man punched numbers into a keypad, securing the door. Carson clenched his fists as the man pulled out a cigarette and patted his pockets, no doubt searching for a lighter.

“Just leave,” Carson said in a pleading whisper.

Cigarette finally lit, the man moved toward the parking lot. Carson held his breath as the man disappeared around the corner. A siren blared in the distance, startling him. He clenched his teeth, drew air in through his nose and blew it out through his mouth. The beating of his heart threatened to fill the night air. He was terrified, but he was more hungry than scared.

Creeping from behind the Dumpster, Carson pulled his parka up over the lower half of his face. Jumping up, he grabbed the bottom rung of the fire escape and struggled to pull himself up.

His arms shook with the effort. Sweat broke out on his skin as he managed to get a foot on the rung. The idea that vampires possessed superhuman strength was a myth, but damn, he was about as strong as an eight year old. He just had to climb to the roof, drop through the small window, and get the blood. Then he could worry about bigger issues.

Carson climbed over the ledge of the old brick building on shaky legs, propelled by his adrenaline. Without that extra push, he would have been flat on his face. The night before he’d been in this same spot on the roof and had jimmied the lock on the old wood-framed window. Before he could enter, the sound of a door slamming somewhere had scared him away. Being caught trying to enter the VMB could bring certain death, but that was better than starving.

Carson sighed in relief as the window slid open easily. His hands were so cold that he would have been unable to jimmy the lock again. Feet first, he shimmied into the dark room. He was on the third floor and unsure what he would find there. During the three days he’d staked out the building, he hadn’t seen any lights on this floor. Pulling out a flashlight, he surveyed the empty room and located the door.

The blood roared in his ears, and his speeding heart felt as if it would explode as he opened the door. Of course, the damn thing would creak. Stepping lightly, Carson walked down a hallway filled with closed doors. Undisturbed dust covering the floor spoke of the vacant nature of this floor of the building. Within the corridor, the noises of the surrounding city were faint, yet still pushed his heart rate faster. In the floor beneath his boots, the constant hum, like an engine running, vibrated up into his legs. At the end of the hall was a steel door with a small dark window that he hoped led to the stairway. The longer he spent wandering, the higher his chances of being found. Clenching his jaw, he pushed open the heavy door, the cold metal chilling the sweat on his palms. His light flashed over the edge of a railing. He found stairs going down to the left. Walking down one flight, he found another door, but what he needed was on the first floor.

Descending farther, the flashlight flickered. Carson froze. Stopping to shake the light, he could hear the beating of his overwrought heart in his ears, feel the knot of dread expand in his gut. Gods, if he had anything in his stomach to throw up, he would. Right now, he needed the blood that the Vampire Blood Market (VBM) provided. Carson’s teeth had only sunk into a vein once and the nightmare of that moment had forever been burned into his memory. Besides, from what he’d heard, the bite hurt the donor like a bitch. That was mainly the sport of pain sluts and adrenaline junkies who visited bars where biting was still legal. In his isolated world of Gifford, NY, blood had always been supplied. Now, he had to feed himself. Without money, that meant stealing what he needed.

At the bottom of the stairs, he peered through the small window into the VBM. Walls of illuminated refrigerated cases held blood in containers similar to milk jugs. Unfortunately, stealing milk didn’t hold the same consequence as stealing blood.

Ignoring the dangerousness of his mission, Carson grasped the door handle. What he feared would be locked opened freely. Inside the VBM, the refrigerated cases hummed. The air was cooler than in the hallway. Carson’s mouth watered and his empty stomach clenched tight. Rushing to the first case, he pulled open the door. He grabbed the closest opaque white container and ripped the top off. Just as he lifted the container with the lifesaving liquid to his lips, the lights came on and a voice shouted, “Freeze!”

Carson dropped the container and gasped. His heart pushed into overdrive, his breaths barely escaped his throat. He gaped at the three men and two women dressed in black uniforms pointing guns at him. Carson tried to remain still but his feet moved backward without thought.

“Freeze or we’ll shoot!” A man with short black hair, who was larger than a truck, leveled a gun at Carson’s head. The man could end all of Caron’s pain. The fear, the hunger, the uncertainty, the agony of losing his family. Just charge at the giant—or slip his hand into his pocket as if he had a gun—and the bullets would do the rest. But as he ran into the wall behind him, his muscles seized. He was going to die no matter what he did.

“Down on your knees and hands on your head!”

Without thought, Carson went down hard on his knees and rested his hands on his head. His head swam from hunger, and his legs shook. It was all he could do to remain upright. Carson closed his eyes and thought of his younger brother, Caden, and his mom. He just wanted this to be over quick.

“Strip him,” he heard the gruff voice say.

Carson’s chest locked up as hands grabbed him. They ripped Carson’s parka over his head and then his sweater and T-shirt were next. The chill on his skin sent a shudder through his emaciated body.

Please, do it quickly.

Hands held him by his shoulders and arms, as if at any minute he might resist. There wasn’t an ounce of resistance left in him, not an ounce of fight. Tears burned his eyes like acid. Gods, his life had sucked so far. This was the perfect ending.

The large man stepped forward. Heavy black boots scraped the floor. The letters NVJ in large white letters crossed his chest. New Vampire Justice. The vampire equivalent of a SWAT team, there because Carson had been trying to steal blood, an act punishable by immediate death.

“You have been caught in the act of stealing blood from a certified Vampire Blood Market, an act punishable by death by the Vampire Justice Act of 2003. Under the jurisdiction of the New Vampire Justice code number 456.5, I, Chief Enforcement Officer for the city of Utica, NY, hereby pass the sentence of death. Do you have anything you wish to say before this judgment is carried out?”

Honorary Blogger Skylar M. Cates: Lessons on Writing a Series + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Lessons on Writing a Series

by Skylar M. Cates

About a year ago, I set a goal for myself. Well, I set a few goals: clean my house more, lose some weight, save more money, write a series. I’m proud to say that while my house remains a mess and the scale has not budged, my series is one goal that I have actually achieved.

The Guy from Glamour, book one, began to take shape in my mind when I pictured a very loving, if slightly meddling family. I wanted a main character that was all about his family. From that point, I knew that the other MC must be his opposite. He must be somebody who has no family and does not think he will ever have love—-Anthony and Dean were created.

It was at the halfway point in this novel when I began to wonder if it should become a series. Readers often write to me and ask about a sequel to my other novel Exposed, and while that might happen someday, part of the reason it has not happened is that I did not plan it. Honestly, I was so excited and nervous to publish the book that the idea of doing more never occurred to me.

Lesson One: Plan Ahead

As I wrote Anthony and Dean’s love affair, I realized I could do it.  I loved these two guys and their world, and I could write a series around them. I was so excited! I wrote about a dozen pages of notes.  But I needed to figure out if their story should continue into multiple books or if their friends would each get books of their own. I’m a fan of both types of series. For The Guy Series, however, I decided to have the secondary characters find love too. Anthony and Dean, and their clan, would and do continue into the other books—that way their story also continues—but the focus would be on Aaron Weiss and Henry Clueley.  Possibly, if readers want it, I might give Mac (from The Only Guy) his story too.

One day, I might attempt the other type of series. For some reason, I feel as if the two MC’s need to be cops solving crimes, or supernatural beings, in order for an ongoing series about the two of them to continue.  For now, I was happy to write the spinoffs.

As I worked on The Only Guy, it was helpful to keep The Guy from Glamour nearby. I had to be careful with every detail, such as the spelling of minor characters names, to major details involving Aaron’s back story as a Night Stalker.

Lesson Two: Check the facts

*Important note—whatever happens in book one, must be reflected in book two

As book two nears its release, I realize the pressure on a series is far greater than on a single book. The fact that many readers liked The Guy From Glamour was awesome and I am so grateful to them for letting me know, but it would be a lie to say it didn’t make finishing The Only Guy a little worrisome. I love Aaron and Jesse’s story so much, and I’m eager to see how readers like them, but it’s kind of like comparing my children. But they are bound together, for better or worse.

Lesson Three: A Promise is a Promise

My final lesson involves Henry’s story. As I submitted The Only Guy for consideration, I began the last story, The Last Guy Breathing. The characters came to me quickly, and their enemies to lovers trope was fun to write. However, I challenged myself with this one to add a few twists. It has a mystery element to it that was new for me. But that’s what keeps life interesting, isn’t it? Continued challenges. I wrote over 74,000 words and realized that the mystery part wasn’t as strong as I wanted. But what to do? Scrap 74k? Forget Henry’s story? I had set it up in The Only Guy, and I had promised a trilogy to DSP and my readers… So no—–that was not an option.

I rolled up my sleeves, called in my beta readers, and I revised the novel. It took me twice as long to finish as The Guy from Glamour or The Only Guy, but I have to say that I’m thrilled with results! (At the time of this post, Henry’s story was accepted by Dreamspinner and will be out in December 2014/January 2015 = Hooray!)

Will I ever do another series? I hope so! For now, I’m happy to see Anthony and Dean, Aaron and Jesse, and Henry and Locke go on their way.

Thanks for hosting me!

Excerpt from The Only Guy

One of my favorite things about The Only Guy was doing the childhood scenes. Here is an excerpt from that time. At this point in the story, Aaron has a crush on Gregory, Jesse’s older brother:

Aaron glanced at Gregory’s body one more time as he walked off in the direction of the cabin, noticing how Gregory’s tight shorts clung to his ass. If only Gregory would loosen up a little, forget all the rules for his future plans and just, well, see him. Aaron would be his for life.

“Come on,” Jesse said, pulling at Aaron’s arm. “Forget him.”

They walked down a path, crunching over the dirt and twigs, following the animal’s throaty cries of pain.

“I hope it’s all right.”

“Me too.”

The sky was thick with clouds, but the heat permeated the air. His shirt stuck to his skin, his stomach rumbled, and Aaron half regretted coming along. He swiped his hand over his forehead as Jesse hurried to keep up with him. Although tall for his age, Jesse was all bony angles, and his stride was awkward. Aaron slowed his pace a little, allowing Jesse to match him.

“When we’re all grown up, do you think we’ll still be coming here?” Jesse stole a glance at him. “’Cause I think we will. We’ll spend every summer right here. We could come other times too. I bet it’s pretty in the winter with all the snow. But definitely in the summer, we’ll be here.”

Aaron’s mouth curved into a smile. “Maybe.”

Jesse nodded back seriously as if the matter had been settled.

The path narrowed, and they fell quiet as they maneuvered the trial. Soon they saw drops of fresh blood. Finally, near a patch of browned grass, Jesse halted and moved to point at something that lay eerily still. Aaron edged closer. The animal was all curled up into a ball, making it impossible to see it, but Aaron thought it might be an injured raccoon. There was a puddle of blood by its left hind leg.

“You could tie your bandana onto its leg?” Jesse suggested. “It isn’t moaning now. Maybe it’s passed out and would let you?”

“I don’t know….”

Jesse gave him a resolute stare. “You could try.”

Sometimes Jesse sounded just like an adult but with a kid’s scrawny body. It was unnerving.

After approaching it slowly, Aaron nudged it with his sneaker and it didn’t move. Now that he could see it up close—

“Holy crap! That’s a skunk! Let’s get the hell out of here. Now!”

Honorary Blogger Hunter Frost: What Can A Writing Group Do For You?

Honorary_Blogger_Post

What Can A Writing Group Do For You?

by Hunter Frost

It’s been nearly a week since the release of my first short story, “What Can Brown Do For You?” featured in the Men In Uniform anthology from Torquere Press, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with its reception. This story was the product of my participation in a writing workshop, and while that played a huge part in helping me create, polish, and complete my manuscript, it was the group of writers I worked with that gave me the final push to publication.

In order to make it through those tough times all writers must face, and usually face alone, I had the benefit of relying upon other writers who had gone or were going through the same struggles. We commiserated with each other, ranted to each other, and motivated each other to move past the road blocks that have the potential to paralyze even the most seasoned writers.

What can a writing group do for you?

Empathize – they listen to your woes and understand completely, because they have been there before or are going through the same thing!

Brainstorm – they help you figure out that plot hole or character backstory

Motivate – they help encourage you past your most crippling self-doubt

Teach – they give you tips and tricks to improve all aspects of your writing life

Critique – they beta, proofread, and offer important feedback

Network – they find calls, introduce you to publishers and agents, and promote your work

Become your friends – now you’ll have friends to find at conferences, meet at retreats, and talk you down off that ledge on bad writing days!

I never realized how important a writing group would be in my journey toward becoming a published author, but now I can’t imagine not having their support as I continue to create and publish.

Writing is a lonely pursuit. But you’re not alone. Give a writing group, workshop, or class a try. It may be the best thing to happen to your writing.

Honorary Blogger Susan Mac Nicol: Susan’s Perfect Man + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Susan’s Perfect Man

By Susan Mac Nicol

I’m often asked what my ideal man would look like. What type of personality would he have and is there a specific profession that might leave me drooling.

My daughter and I have an ongoing disagreement. She is very fond of overly large muscle bound men with huge pecs, washboard stomachs, arms like hocks of hams, and hair. She likes hirsute men. I don’t. I’m not overly fond of too much hair on my blokes, I certainly don’t mind a treasure trail, or a finely tasteful smattering on the chest, but I draw the line at hairy backsides and I certainly don’t like my men looking like grizzly bears.

I definitely prefer a man to have the body of a swimmer, tall, lean, muscled, smooth skinned, muscles playing under skin and a tight, round arse. Flat stomach is preferred, if it’s a six pack, all the better. My idea man is probably Cade Mairston. He’s gorgeous and not one I would say no to. For anything he might want. I love dark men, strong eyebrows, quirky smiles, warm eyes and thick hair. I’m not averse to blonds or dirty blonds (the dirtier the better I hear you murmur?) if they look like Shane Templar or Quinn Fairmont.

My men have to have a sense of humour and intelligence. They don’t have to be Mensa members by any means because I wouldn’t be able to keep up with them but they need to be great conversationalists and entertaining. I’d prefer a man that reads, and if he wears sexy designer glasses when he gets into bed at night in his silky boxers, all the better. I don’t mind boxers or briefs. Either will do me until it’s time for them to come off. Then of course the measure of the man underneath the underwear is important. Size is important -don’t ever let anyone tell you different *grins*

Then when he sits in bed and smiles at me across the top of those sexy spectacles with that glint in his eyes that says’ ‘Be there soon, wait for me’, as he then turns his attention to the geeky process of being a hacker, a software developer, a computer games creator -yep, that’s my secret, I like ‘em geeky- I can give a satisfied grin , lay back on my satin pillows and wait for him to finish what he’s doing in the knowledge that later, he’ll be all mine.

Excerpt

Quinn’s eyes flashed violently at his uncle. “I am not fucking losing him to the depths of a bloody Hampstead Heath pond.”

He knelt down beside Cade again, closing his eyes as he tried once more to heal, but the wound just kept seeping blood, now at a much slower rate than before. Cade’s face was ash white, his dark hair standing out starkly against the deathly pallor of his face.

Quinn. Your Cade is nearly gone. You have to put him in the water now before it is too late. There is no time for your modern medicine. He will not survive unless you do it now. The Water Sprites will take him and heal him as long as there is still a spark of life left in him.

“I can’t. Don’t ask me to do that. I can’t.” Quinn’s voice was strangled as he struggled to compose himself. His body was cold, his mind sluggish and he had never felt so desperate.

Daniel strode forward and despite his small and wiry frame, he picked Cade up in his arms. He looked at Quinn, his voice resolute. “He’s dying. This may be the only way to save him.”

Quinn growled and reached out with a hand to hold him back. Daniel sidestepped him and looked at him with a resolute expression. “You can hurt me if you want but it won’t help Cade. This is all we have left to try before he dies.”

Quinn’s hand still gripped him tightly and the older man winced.

“If anyone is going to do this, it’s going to be me.” Quinn’s voice cracked and he held out his arms. Wordlessly, Daniel placed Cade in Quinn’s outstretched arms and Quinn pulled his lover closer to his body. He walked down to the water’s edge and waded in as Daniel watched helplessly from the bank, his face stark. Quinn gently laid Cade down in the water. He seemed to float for a while, hair spreading about in the water like black smoke. His face was still, eyes closed as Quinn held tightly onto his cold hand, rubbing his thumb over the engagement ring. Quinn’s vision blurred as tears filled his eyes.

You need to let Cade go. Let him join his kind below the water. Trust me.

Taliesin’s voice was soft, compassionate. Quinn heaved a shuddering sigh as Daniel joined him in the water, laying a comforting arm on his.

“I can’t—” Quinn shook his head in grief, his heart breaking.

His uncle took hold of his shoulders, firmly holding him back. “There’s no other way, son. Let him go.”

Quinn relinquished his grip on Cade’s hand, standing there as he heard a soft splash and saw the water rippling around them. As they watched, two sets of pale hands emerged out of the water, and slowly, lovingly, Cade was dragged gently beneath the dark waters of the pond. Quinn saw the hand with his ring on it slowly disappear under the water. It was the last glimpse he had of the man he loved.

About Double Alchemy: Climax

DA Climax-2Powerful modern warlock Quinn Fairmont found ecstasy with the silver-eyed and not-quite-human Cade Mairston, but to know true happiness the pair must best both the shadow of a long-ago lover and an ancient enemy who seeks to destroy love, light and all they hold dear.

A BLINDING LIGHT

It begins with a Book of Shadows discovered by a London coven. The grimoire is as dangerous as it is rare, which is why it evokes modern-day warlock Quinn Fairmont’s desire. He collects objects of great power and beauty—like his lover, Cade Mairston.

Against all odds he and Cade found each other, but their perils have just begun. First is the ex-lover who once held Quinn in thrall. And, someone has been killing warlocks. Could it be one of his own kind? There are those too who would challenge Quinn’s power in their quest to overthrow him as Grand Master. Or is the danger something darker, something invoked inadvertently, rising from the shadows, building from the very inside of a man until it brings an end with a quick flash of light? Of the truth, the surface has only been scratched. Now Quinn and Cade must go deeper and find both answers and an end. They must learn what lurks in the hearts of men…and whether it seeks to love or destroy.

GRL Blog Tour: Poppy Dennison – Poppy says Be BRAVE + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Poppy says Be BRAVE

by Poppy Dennison

For this year’s GRL post, I thought I’d give my Top 5 tips on how to make the most of your GRL experience! And it all comes down to being BRAVE.

B– Bring your A game, and never, ever say you’re “just a reader”. A funny thing happens at GRL. Authors and readers and bloggers converge together in one place for a weekend of fun. Thing is, authors are readers, and bloggers are readers, and some readers are bloggers, and some authors are bloggers and some…well, you get the point. No one is “just” anything. We’re all part of this crazy family known as the Gay Romance genre. I mean, it’s even in the title. GRL=Gay Romance & Literature Retreat. Right? So that means we’re all in it together, no matter what your role may be. You’re part of the family–even if you’re the self-proclaimed black sheep. We like black sheeps in this genre. But you have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and that takes a lot of work for some of us. GRL is the one time of year when we can all step up and get to know each other. It’s so different face-to-face than behind the shiny little computer box we normally live behind.  Every year, new friendships are found and new connections are made. That’s the magic of GRL, so you’ve got to be ready for it!

R– Realize that other people have anxiety too. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed among the many posts from events like GRL, but a lot of us have issues with anxiety. And everyone’s anxiety is different. I met an author recently who told me that she likes to be at the corners of a room with a wall at her back. She loves talking to people but doesn’t want to be out in the middle of the room. I’m the opposite. I have anxiety like whoa, but if you put me in the corner with a wall of people between me and the exit? Melt down city. Neither of us had ever really thought about how anxiety is different for everyone! At GRL-Chicago, I’m going to do my best to tiptoe toward the corners to meet those people who don’t like to be in the middle of the room. But maybe you could meet me half way? Or if there’s someone you really want to meet, try to find a creative way to let them know. Maybe it’s sending an email or a Facebook message beforehand letting them know you’d like to meet them. Or maybe it’s getting someone else to introduce you. (I’m happy to make introductions! I kinda like it!) I know that I’d hate to miss meeting someone because I’m hovering in the middle of the room, afraid of the corners, and someone who might be an amazing new friend doesn’t want to be out there in the middle with me.

A– Authors are people too! I know, this one seems obvious, but it’s easy to forget sometimes. I’ll tell you a little story that I’ve told many times before, but it still holds true. At the very first GRL, I wanted to meet Geoff Knight. Like *really* wanted to meet him. I’d read his Fathom’s Five series and absolutely adored the books. I even purchased a paperback of The Riddle of the Sands for Geoff to sign. Problem was, I was too chicken to ask him. Seriously. Like Bwack Bwack chicken. Went over to his table at the signing, couldn’t bring myself to talk to him. I mean this was GEOFF KNIGHT. Who was I to talk to him? I’ve confessed my fear to Geoff since then, and realize that I was being a bit silly. But it’s scary sometimes! I get it! Now that I’m an author too, I understand more than ever. For the most part, I don’t know if you’ve read my books. I’m probably not going to walk up to you and say “so hey, have you read my books? What’d you think?” Cause if I did that, I’d be a Dork-a-saurus Rex. I don’t know unless you’re brave and tell me. And I’ll love it if you do. I promise. I might blush—I’ll always blush when someone likes what I’ve written—but it’s such an honor. So if you’re afraid to talk to your favorite author, find some courage. Geoff and I are friends now, and if I hadn’t gotten brave before GRL in Albuquerque, that might not have happened!

V– Very few cliques are real. Oh yeah, I’m going there. Tis my way. One of the gripes I’ve heard about GRL is that it’s cliquey. Thing is, we all have our friends that we talk to a lot. Most of us are on social media outside of GRL getting to know each other. We have our groups. Who doesn’t? Thing is, I don’t know of any group at GRL that shuts out anyone else. No really. I can’t think of one. I think it’s mostly that we’re all scared that we *will* be shut out. And look, I get it. I’m that way too. See above: me terrified to talk to Geoff. A lot of us have been to multiple GRLs at this point and tight groups are bound to form, especially when we only see each other once a year. We tend to gather in small herds and hug the stuffing out of each other because we know this is the only time of the year where we’ll get to see these people in person. But don’t be afraid to get to know the groups! I arrived at GRL-New Orleans having never met a single person there in real life. It was SO DAMN SCARY. I thought I would stick out like a sore thumb, that no one would like the “real me”, that the online me was so much better. I don’t know. I can’t explain these insecurities that we all seem to have. But we do all seem to have them, don’t we? Stepping outside those groups can be a bit scary, especially since most of us are doing our very best to be brave in a social situation that we’re not accustomed to. Just remember, the groups aren’t exclusive. And I guess if they are, who wants to be part of that anyway? But honestly, I think most of us just tend to huddle together in our safe zones and hope people will come to us. But then people won’t come to us because we’re huddled in those safe zones with our pack of friends. Sigh. See the dilemma? Again, it comes down to being brave!

E– Everyone is at GRL to have a good time! Again, I know I’m a master of the obvious with this one, but I think it’s a great reminder. I can’t think of anyone who has said “Yeah, I’m going to GRL and plan to be miserable the entire time.” Does it happen sometimes? Yeah. I’m sure it does. (See above: anxiety sucks) Thing is, we all want GRL to be fantastic and amazing and that deep breath of air that gets us through the year until the next GRL. Most of us depend on this event to really be ourselves, to be free and safe in a group of like-minded people who love the same things as we do and hold many of the same values. It’s such a rare occurrence in life to have an opportunity like this—take advantage of it. And remember, there are so many ways to get help if you aren’t having a great time! I can’t think of a single person who’d mind if you asked! Everyone from fellow readers who know their way around, to authors who know the authors you want to meet. The organizers are there to help as well. All you’ve got to do is be brave.

So what do you think? Can you do it? If you’re new to GRL what are you most nervous about? For you “old-timers”, what advice would you give newbies on being brave and making the most out of your experience? I’d love to hear what you think!
