Honorary Blogger Liz Borino: In Defense of Flashbacks + Giveaway

In Defense of Flashbacks

by Liz Borino

Do you want to hear a secret? Are you sure?

Okay, here it is: I love using flashbacks in my fiction. I know. I know. Readers find the technique distracting and will rate books that employ it worse automatically. Almost as badly as they rate cliffhangers… which I may also use. Sometimes.

*Innocent smile*

Please put your holy water away, I’m so far past the point where that would be effective, it’s not even worth it. Let’s assume I am a reasonably intelligent heathen who listens to feedback from my much more intelligent beta readers and editors. I’ve proven that flashbacks are risky, but continue to use them. If you’ve read this far, you probably want to know why. (Or you’re bored, in which case, I can recommend some great authors. Most of them aren’t even me. ☺) Still here? Great! Below are my two main reasons for going back in time in Angel’s Hero, the first in the Angel series. Hopefully, I can prove flashbacks aren’t evil. If you lovely readers have suggestions for a flashback alternative to either of the below reasons, please tell me in the comments. The best comment will receive both Angel books.

1. I enjoy writing established couples. Readers want to know how the characters met and fell in love. So, I use flashbacks to give them a taste of the characters’ journey.

2. The heart of the story takes place in present day, but past events offer clues to solving the mystery. I needed the readers to see these scenes, as opposed to hearing them referenced in conversation or thoughts.

About Angel’s Truth

20760835Book Two in the Angel Series Out March 12! (Sequel to Angel’s Hero)

*Please Note: These Books Must Be Read In Order*

Blurb: “Freeze or I’ll shoot!” Aaron yelled and aimed the gun at Jordan’s chest.

“Angel, no, please.” Hacking fluid-filled coughs broke up Jordan’s words.

“Jordan?” Aaron whispered his name as recognition painted a mural of memories of their life together on his face.

“Yes.” He coughed red into his dirty hand. “Please help.”

So begins Angel’s Truth, the sequel to Angel’s Hero. Army Captain Jordan Collins arrives home, only to find the man responsible for his imprisonment, torture, and near-execution with his husband. Had his Angel moved on without him?

Aaron “Angel” Collins has driven his family and friends away in his quest to learn the truth of Jordan’s fate, leaving only Major General Troy Hart willing to help him. When Jordan miraculously returns, with a spirit more broken than his body, Aaron realizes Hart was really a liar with an agenda of his own. Aaron is unable to take time to heal his own emotional wounds, because he and Jordan learn Hart’s betrayal is even greater than they originally believed, threatening the entire nation. Now the reunited couple must race against time to keep a promise to Jordan’s savior and prevent Hart from bringing terrorism once again to American soil.

Angel’s Truth releases today March 12, 2014 and is available at Amazon.

An Honorary Blogger Post: Shift it with Jackie Nacht + Giveaway

Honorary_Blogger_Nacht copy

TBG: Today’s Honorary Blogger Girl is Jackie Nacht, who has a lovely shifter series called Moon Compound that she’s here to talk about. So, everyone give her a warm welcome and we hope you enjoy what she has to say!

blogger_bee_trans

Shift it with Jackie Nacht

First I’d like to thank Blogger Girls for having me here today. Thank you!

I’m extremely excited to introduce you all to Moon Compound.

I knew when I started writing that I wanted to write a shifter series. I love paranormal and have always been fascinated by it. However, I also knew that if I didn’t bring something new to the table so to speak, that the series as a whole would be boring.

Therefore, I analyzed the procedure of the shift, what packs did for the individual and well…asked myself a lot of questions. Then I took my answers up a notch and threw a couple of rules out the window. I love breaking rules. LOL

In Moon Compound series, shifters take years to control their shift, hence the reason why they are locked up. Packs send their pre-transition twenty-two year olds to go live at the compound. It’s a little cross between a prison, since they are locked up on the full moon, and a home.  The pre-shifters will live there until they get control of their shift and with some shifters, it can take quite a few years. Medical staff is on hand to help them afterward, since shifts are extremely painful.

The other part of Moon Compound is that while it focuses strongly on a mated pair in each book, there is an underlying plot that carries from book to book. Each book reveals more to the plot and opens up the world.  That world involves their enemies, Hellhounds.

For those that have read some of my books, this is very different to my typical sweet and light writing. Moon Compound had a dark and gritty edge to it that flows throughout the series. My goal is to continue to surprise readers and give them a wild ride.

Again, thank you Blogger Girls for having me here today. Have a great week everyone. Hugs!

About Jackie:

Short, sexy and sweet—where a little love goes a long way.

That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. I was introduced to M/M Romance through my sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, I thought it was time to put my own stories on paper. I began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after…and sometimes more than one, in the case of my YA Fork in the Road series, which has interactive endings.

Thinking back to my own book addiction, where there were many nights I stayed up way too late so I could read just one more chapter—yeah, right—I decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students, or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and at my webpage: www.jackienacht.com.

Honorary Blogger Mia Kerick: “Please eSign” spells RELIEF!!! + Giveaway

Honorary Blogger - Mia Kerick

Heather C: First, I want to thank Ms. Mia Kerick for joining us here at TBG today and sharing with us a bit about some of the tortures of becoming a writer.  Also, Mia has a newly released young adult novel that I totally recommend titled The Red Sheet.  While the book deals with the heavy topic of bullying, the author still lets her humorous side shine through…you can see a little evidence of that here.  Enjoy!

“Please eSign” spells RELIEF!!!

by Mia Kerick

Many people have asked me how it feels to receive an acceptance letter for one of my story submissions. And I should know as I have received, um, let’s see…(counting on fingers—never been good with numbers) nine (including a short story) acceptances from Dreamspinner Press/Harmony Ink Press in the past year and a half.

“Aren’t you so excited, Mia?”
“You must be on Cloud Nine!”
“I’ll bet you’re gonna celebrate!”
“How does it feel, Mia, to receive an acceptance for a story submission?”

Relief. It feels like relief.

Let me explain how I get to the point of experiencing relief rather than joy at a story acceptance…

To start, I write the book. This is the easy part…the fun part. Occasionally I strap a family member into a kitchen chair with bungee cords and make him (or her) listen to certain carefully selected chapters. Yeah, the “strap into a chair” part is necessary as we are a very busy family and no one has time to listen to “Mom’s love stories.”

I gauge his (or her) reactions. I have this part down to a science. I know that an eye roll equals, “that was cute”.  When a family member is biting down hard on their bottom lip while I read, I realize that the content is, in some way, over the top. Simple head shaking means B-O-R-I-N-G. But wide eyes is what I’m going for. Wide eyes indicate that despite his desire to run and hide, he is finding what I am reading interesting.

I feel relief…that is, if I can induce a glassy, wide-eyed look.

Self-editing comes next. And let me tell you, I am very hard on myself.  If my computer cooperates and I get this step finished without losing large sections of my manuscript…there it is again—RELIEF!!

Any author knows the relief I feel after the synopsis is completed. Indescribable.

Moving on to…

Questioning myself as an author, as a mother, and in general, questioning my reason for existing. This step always comes before I submit a story. And predictably, when I have decided that I am a worthwhile human being, after all, I experience palpable relief.

Submission. The “I’m gonna lose my lunch” feeling. The sweating. The praying. But once I press the send button, there is a measurable degree of relief…

UNTIL…

I rethink my story from top to bottom. The voice comes into question… the prologue…the way I started chapter one…the way I ended chapter thirty-two.

Is it sufficiently compelling? Should it have been YA instead of adult?

This part is pure torture because I soon move on to, what will my publishers think if I rewrite and resubmit? Will they think I’m overly compulsive? Will they know for certain I am overly compulsive?

Nonetheless, I have written more than one apologetic letters to my publisher accompanied by rewritten novels.  (They have accepted my rewritten work quite graciously.)

But believe me, once I re-submit, the relief I feel is lip-bitingly over the top.

Nothing can bother me now. I have no need for relief anymore. I am made of steel. My nerves—they are strong. They can handle the waiting… and the waiting… the compulsive checking of emails. (The knowing that AT THIS VERY MOMENT my work is being judged….)

Waiting for a response to my submission is a piece of cake, really.

I don’t check my emails 500 times per day. Really, I don’t.

Okay. Maybe I do…

Truth? Waiting for a response to a submission has led me into mild depressions.

And so, when I see this:

Thank you for your submission. We are interested in publishing…

AAAHHHHH!!!!! R-E-L-I-E-F!!!!!

That’s all. Not joy. Not elation.

Simple relief.

Check out The Red Sheet. Yes, I endured the above torturous process to bring this story to publication. I will experience relief once again if it sells.

About The Red Sheet

One October morning, high school junior Bryan Dennison wakes up a different person—helpful, generous, and chivalrous—a person whose new admirable qualities he doesn’t recognize. Stranger still is the urge to tie a red sheet around his neck like a cape.
Bryan soon realizes this compulsion to wear a red cape is accompanied by more unusual behavior. He can’t hold back from retrieving kittens from tall trees, helping little old ladies cross busy streets, and defending innocence anywhere he finds it.
Shockingly, at school, he realizes he used to be a bully. He’s attracted to the former victim of his bullying, Scott Beckett, though he has no memory of Scott from before “the change.” Where he’d been lazy in academics, overly aggressive in sports, and socially insecure, he’s a new person. And although he can recall behaving egotistically, he cannot remember his motivations.
Everyone, from his mother to his teachers to his “superjock” former pals, is shocked by his dramatic transformation. However, Scott Beckett is not impressed by Bryan’s newfound virtue. And convincing Scott he’s genuinely changed and improved, hopefully gaining Scott’s trust and maybe even his love, becomes Bryan’s obsession.

“Okay, everybody, discussion time is over. Please pass your papers forward—I’m very excited to read about your dreams and to check out what your partners found interesting enough to comment on.” I collected his paper and handed it, together with mine, to the girl in front of me. Meanwhile, Scott chewed on his bottom lip, looking a bit concerned, probably because the edit he had given me consisted of only one hastily scribbled word. And that one word was a word we weren’t even supposed to use at school.

“So what do you say about me and you going to the game, Scott?”

And for the first time since the change had happened, his expression softened. He leaned in toward me, and said softly, “I can’t go, Bryan. I can’t ever go anywhere with you.”

I spoke quietly back to him. “But I said I was sorry—for everything.”

“You keep saying that you can’t remember our friendship, and that all you know of our relationship is from what you dream. Oh, and that you can’t remember what you and your friends did to me that night. But Bryan, maybe you can’t remember, but I just can’t forget—not any of it—because it hurts way too fucking much.”

“I… I just can’t…. I can’t….” I had no idea what I was trying to say.

“What you just can’t do is tell me the truth. You just can’t look me in the eyes, admit to remembering it all, and say you acted like a complete dickhead.”

Miss Libby’s voice sliced through Scott’s accusation. “Class is dismissed. Don’t forget to pick up tonight’s journal topic from off the desk by the door.”

I followed him with my eyes as he got up, grabbed his backpack, and headed toward the door. And although his words had stung, I couldn’t help but feel like we’d somehow taken a step forward. Yeah, Scott had rejected me. And no, he didn’t believe a word I said. But he had spoken to me for the first time in plain words.

In honest words.

As I passed by Miss Libby’s desk, she held up the paper on which I had written about my dream, and pointed to Scott’s nasty single-word edit.

“How are things, Bryan? Are you making any progress in the area you mentioned to me?”

“It’s very slow going, Miss Libby.” I stopped right in front of her desk. “But I’m not gonna give up.”

And that’s when she smiled at me in the way I’d recently started yearning for—like she knew I was putting forth my very best in this effort to make amends. And I really was.

About Mia

MiaKerickMia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

My themes I always write about: Sweetness. Unconventional love, tortured/damaged heroes- only love can save them.

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Mathew Ortiz + Giveaway

Interview Banner

Q&A with Mathew Ortiz

TBG: Hello, Matt, thank you for visiting The Blogger Girls!  I think you are a new author to The Blogger Girls, well, except for JustJen, since she just read your newest Love and Salvage series book, Halestorm, so we thought it would be nice to get to know you a little better by asking you a few questions.

Tell us a little something about yourself we might not already know?

Matt:  Well, I’m an army brat born in Nuremberg, Germany and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I knew early on that I was gay and that I didn’t want to live in my home town. It was too constrictive. My mother said it was the gypsy blood in my veins that compelled me to travel, and she was right. I am intensely curious and open to so many new things. I played the cello for almost seven years; I can frame a house and do most renovations myself. I prefer to do it myself, that way I know it’s done right.

I’ve had my troubles, bad relationships and such. I also suffered from poor body image and starved myself to 190lbs to be thin. I was way too thin for my eastern European build. I was thin and could wear anything, but I was miserable the entire time. In my late thirties, I gained weight, but finally came into my own and love me for me. Oh, and I am a car diva. I sing out loud and proud!

TBG: Tell us a quirky story about your Husband.

Matt:  He’s going to kill me but when we were first together, Tim had a habit of gesturing wildly with his arms when he talked. Like some crazy chicken. After a few years of this, I was sitting across from him at a restaurant, him flapping away and I said “You look like a deranged gay chicken when you do that with your arms.” I flapped my arms to prove the point. He was so mad at me. But from that point, if I said the word ‘arms,’ he would stop flapping. Love my big gay chicken though!

TBG:  How do you get your husband to leave you alone long enough to get all your writing done?

Matt:  In the beginning, he was not sure what to make of my new passion for writing. At times, I think he was miffed at the time I was spending writing. He would keep interrupting, and I would lose my groove. We butted heads a few times in the beginning. He never read my early works, and it wasn’t until Love and Salvage: Eli’s Three Wishes that he picked up the book and read it. He was amazed. He did a complete one eighty. He now reads them and helps me with first run editing. In the end, he became one of my best cheerleaders and now asks me if I’m going to write that day and he leaves me be. He’s a great guy.

TBG: Ok, now for the book-related questions. Tell us a bit about the Love and Salvage series and Halestorm. What was your inspiration for writing them and where did you get the idea for the salvage company?

Matt:  I had just finished the Cookies and Coffee mini books and was trolling through the channels one late night on the TV and found Duck Dynasty. I found myself laughing at the things they were doing and relating to them. So, I got sidetracked and did Love and Salvage. Junk collectors who made a business of selling salvage. Two of my favorite shows are Salvage Dawgs and Rehab Addict. I love old homes!

Halestorm came about because I loved that Hale was a northerner, living with his friend Alex in the sticks of Georgia. A true fish out of water. Hale was me when I was younger. I didn’t appreciate the south and wanted none of it, like Hale. He hates everything about the south. He thought they were all backward and wanted to leave as soon as he could. Then, he met Bumper. My focus with Hale was that over time, those opinions he had of the south and southerners changed. A loner, Hale found himself taken in by a big loving southern family and treated with respect. Southerners are like that. We adopt people into our families and treat them like kin.

TBG: Did you have to do a lot of research?

Matt:  For my upcoming Oswald Witches series, I did more research than ever before. I looked up herbs used for magical purposes, mystical creatures and current paranormal research in the area of the supernatural. Thanks to a friend on Facebook, I was able to set the basic premise for all the powers of the witches. This new series will go all the way back to the Black Plague, which ravaged Europe and how it was directly caused by the war between the four clans. So I have researched on the spread of the Plague, how it traveled and where it was the most virulent. It’s my most ambitious series yet, so my outline is extensive.

TBG:  How do you know so much about “red neck” families, and how did you come up with some of the more unusual character names, such as Bumper’s real name – Wilberforce?

Matt:  I grew up in redneck territory and was a hunting, fishing, barefoot hillbilly myself, with a southern twang. I loved growing up southern. The manners, the friendliness of the people, it was a great time, but it did have its negatives. Being gay in the south is difficult to say the least. I got harassed and called ‘faggot’, ‘queer’ and ‘cocksucker’. I was beaten up more than a few times. Yet, I wouldn’t change being raised in a southern town for anything. I thought, why not set a series in the south and blend rednecks, crazy family and gay men. I drew off experiences and the stories flowed. It was like going home. My sister gave me a great line that I used in one of my books. Redneck pate! Potted meat on a saltine cracker with an olive slice! I laugh every time I read that.  And as to Bumper’s given name, if you ever read the comic ‘The Born Loser’, the child was named Wilberforce. I was already sure I was calling Bumper ‘Bumper’, as nicknames are common in the south. What I needed was a name which he would cringe at, if he was called by it. So Bumper’s real name is Wilberforce. Wouldn’t you rather go by Bumper?

TBG:  Are any of the characters in any of the three books in the series derived from real life people in your life?

Matt:  Funny you should ask that because, in all honesty, Oscar and Eli are a lot like Tim and I. Tim is a ball of emotional energy, and I sit back relax and just grunt sometimes. He is the hyper one, and I’m the calm one. Of all the characters I have written, those two are the most like us. When Tim read Eli’s book, he looked up when he was done and said. “Oh my God, they’re us, aren’t they!?” I couldn’t deny it.

And Oscar’s Abuela is modeled after my own friend Luz. She is exactly like her character in my book. I have used co-workers as basis for characters since the beginning. I work with some wonderful, kooky people.

TBG: How long have you been planning this series?

Matt:  Love and Salvage was a whim. I started Emmett’s story and everything evolved organically from it. The stories told themselves. I always wanted to write a character named Emmett. I first heard the name on ‘Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas’. Love that name! And Tim despises Emmett Otter, too hillbilly for him.

TBG: Had you planned on the story heading into paranormal territory from the inception? Where did the idea come from to make that change?

Matt:  I was going to go straight to the Oswalds, when Love and Salvage came about. I decided early on in Love and Salvage that it would be a bridge between my older series and the Oswalds. It wasn’t planned initially, but it was a happy accident. I knew by book two, Eli’s story, that I was going tie them into the Oswalds with Hale, and you’ll meet Oliver Oswald Blackthorne in the next and last Love and Salvage: Skin Tight Levi’s.

TBG:  Halestorm is the prequel to the Oswald Witches. Will we see more of the Wolves in those stories and what other Supernaturals can we expect to meet?

Matt:  Oh hell, you’re going to meet witches, dwarves, fairies, elves, trolls, werewolves and demons. My series has four clans: The Fire Clans for the demons and hellfire creatures, the Water Clans for the shape shifters, the Air Clans for the elves, ghosts and fairies, and the Earth Clan for the witches and dwarves. The only thing I am not using is vampires. I have enough as it is. I have six books planned…maybe more, and Mr. Hale McAvoy has a major part in the Oswalds. He is the un-witch witch, a perfect foil for his mystical family.

TBG: Okay, last questions: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have or favorite music you listen to that gets the inspiration flowing?

Matt:  I have two places; I do most of my writing. First, is on my patio by the pool. The weather is so nice here in Florida, I hate staying indoors unless I have to. So, I sit out there with a cigar and a drink and pound the keys. I also have my chair, in the family room that I sit at to write in. It’s firm, comfortable, and I can sit for hours writing in it.

As for inspiration, I do listen to music but I find myself putting on a DVD from two of my favorite British sitcoms: Keeping Up Appearances and The Vicar of Dibley. The humor and the character interaction inspire me and make me laugh, even though I’ve seen all the episodes at least a dozen times. I will be watching more creepy movies, when I write the Oswald Witches. I recently went to Disney World and road the Haunted Mansion ride. The interiors inspired me and will set the tone of the Oswald house.

TBG: Thank you so much for stopping by! Best of luck with your new book and upcoming Oswald series!

Matt:  Thank so much for the interview Jen. Oh and P.S. Did I use enough commas?

About Mathew Ortiz

Mathew Ortiz has lived in sunny Florida with his partner, Tim, for the last ten years. Tim bought him a Kindle  for his birthday, and his world suddenly got a lot bigger. An avid reader, he was soon wracking up several hundred books onto his Kindle a month. So, obviously trying his hand at writing seemed to be the next logical step. He wrote his first novella one year ago and hasn’t looked back. After writing papers for people in college and for his own Bachelors in Nursing, writing for fun was a blessing. A fanboy of anything British, sumo wrestling, rugby and cooking, you can usually find him obsessing over a new cook book or sitting on the porch with his father-in-law, shooting the s**t!

That’s the official bio.

Now for me. Hi, I’m Matt, and I love writing in the gay men’s romance genre. By my own admission and my mother’s, I am a natural story teller with a very twisted sense of humor. I write characters that are flawed as people, real people because Lord knows, I’m a odd piece of work. Inspiration for my books can come from anything:  from a ring, to a house, to an odd comment by a friend. Nothing is safe or sacred with me, and if you know me, you might end up in one of my books. I find my friends to be a rich source of inspiration. So, that’s it. Just a regular guy…mostly!

Halestorm

HalestormBlurb: Cursed, he must be cursed. Everything about Bumper Gaither drew Hale like a moth to a flame. When Bumper walked into the room, time stood still for Hale, and it took all he had not to scale Mount Bumper. Every fiber of Hale’s being wanted to throw himself into the big bear’s arms. There was one problem. Well not a problem, per se. How was Hale gonna tell Bumper that he was a witch……way was UP!

Bumper’s head spun, he chest grew tight, all at the sight of the spitfire named Hale McAvoy. Their blistering kiss at his Aunt and Uncle’s barbeque left him wanting more, a lot more. However, despite his best efforts, Hale steadfastly refused to go out with him, despite the obvious attraction. That only made Bumper more determined. Like a bulldog with a bone, Bumper was not letting go. So why was Hale so hesitant to go out with him?

Love and Salvage #3, Halestorm, is now available on Amazon!

A Blogger Girl Q&A with Liz Borino + Angel’s Hero Giveaway

Interview Banner

Q&A with Liz Borino

TBG: Hello, Liz, thank you for visiting The Blogger Girls.  I think you are a new author to all four of us, well, except for Susan since she just read your new Angel series, so we thought it would be nice to get to know you a little better by asking you a few questions.

Liz: Thanks for having me!

TBG: Tell us a little about yourself?

Liz: I grew up between two conservative, small towns in Pennsylvania. One had the advantage of movie theaters and shopping malls within a short driving distance. The other’s mark of civilization happened when it gained a Wal-Mart ten years ago. Everyone knows your name there, and more relevant to someone who failed to fit into the dominant ideology, they also know your family… for about five generations. So, if I could have left at ten, I would have, but I had to wait until I turned eighteen. At which point I chose a college near New York City, where I went through three different majors before deciding on Public Relations. A few years and a broken engagement later, I began my English MA in… yet another small town in PA. I’m working on getting out again.

TBG: Tell us a quirky story about one of your favorite relatives?

Liz: My Aunt Marna has always been my greatest supporter. When I was growing up, she lived in Southern California, but used to come to Philadelphia on business frequently. One winter she arrived during a rain and sleet storm, and rang the doorbell.  I opened it to find her drenched and shivering. She shook me by the shoulders and said, “You don’t have to live like this!” Ironically enough, her job transferred her to Philly a few years later.

TBG: All right, now let’s get to writing questions.  Have you been writing all your life?  Or is M/M Romance a fairly new venture for you?

Liz: I completed my first (handwritten) book at eleven. While it was not M/M romance – nor good probably, to know I would first have to find and be able to read it – I was happy to have something finished. I found out that S.E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders, published her first novel at fourteen. And I was infused with hope that I, too, could find early success. Lazy Day my first M/M Romance was when I was twenty-three. I’ve been writing it for six years now. I never considered the genre before one of the twins in my first series turned out to be gay. I thought I was writing a book mostly about brotherly love, but… nope. They had other plans.

TBG: Tell us a bit about the Angel’s Hero and Angel’s Truth.  What was your inspiration for writing them?

Liz: One day I thought, “I wonder what would have happened if Mike (from No Flag) had died…” Then decided Will (his husband) would have fallen apart. So, I created new characters who would not. Instead, Aaron didn’t believe the officers who broke the news.

TBG: Did you have to do a lot of research?

Liz: Yes, I have been researching the military for a year or so now to inform No Flag and the Angel series. I’ve also explored PTSD, different injuries the characters sustained, and the CIA. I’m probably on a few government watch lists.

TBG: How long did it take you…from plot bunny to completion?

Liz: Three months for the two books.

TBG: Are you a pantser or a planner?

Liz: Both. You know, I try to be a planner. I make very detailed outlines and have every intention of sticking to them, but sometimes the boys get other ideas… and if I disagree, they stop talking to me.

TBG: Okay, one last question: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

Liz: I tend to write on my bed, while listening to a playlist to start working. And I’m sorry, but you can’t have a picture because my room is not fit to be published.
