Exclusive Excerpt from Change of Heart
by KM Neuhold
“Who do you want me to track down?” he asks cautiously.
“River Williams.”
I hear rustling and then the scratch of pen against paper. “Who is this guy? That’s a unique name so that should help, but I’m going to need a little more to go on than this.”
“He had a heart transplant five years ago.”
The writing stops and Fox sighs. “East…”
“Please,” I say, clutching my phone tighter in my hand. “I just…I need to know.” I sniffle and I’m ashamed of how pathetic I sound, but it’s nothing worse than what Fox has heard from me before. This is the man who held me countless nights and let me cry all over his shirt, the man who always had soothing words for me even when I couldn’t stand to hear them. I know he would do anything for me…for Paul…and if I have to push him to make this happen, I’m shameless enough to do it.
He sighs again, this time sounding resigned. “What do you need to know?”
“That he’s a good person, that he’s…worthy.”
He lets out a humorless laugh. “It’s a little late if he’s not. What are you going to do if he turns out to be a prick? Cut his heart out?”
“Please?” I say again.
“If I do this, you need to do something for me.”
I hesitate, already sure I’ll hate whatever he’s going to ask for. But now that the idea of knowing about this man has come into my mind, it feels vital in some way.
“Fine, what do you need me to do?” I agree.
“I need you to try. Go on a date, hell, go out with friends, get out of the house and do something fun.”
Even though I knew it was what he would ask, the demand sounds entirely unreasonable. But if I want him to find this River Williams, I know I have to agree.
“Fine.”
