Heart by Garrett Leigh – Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

An Exclusive Excerpt from Heart

Dex laid his cheek on his bent knees. Mikey’s voice was far away, and he felt sleepy. He didn’t care about Mikey, or Braden, or their failed attempt to become big-time gangsters. He just wanted to sleep.

“Someone’s talking to the coppers.” Suddenly, Mikey was beside him again. “Braden thinks it’s you, but I know it’s not. You’re just a kid. You don’t know enough to stir up the shite that’s gone down. You don’t know the bloody half of it, and I’ll tell you one thing for nothing, kid. I’m not going down for no one, least of all that cunt.”

Mikey took hold of Dex’s chin. Dex flinched and confusion scattered his thoughts. Mikey was Braden’s right-hand man, stoic and loyal, and he’d never once shown a hint of dissent. And one of their own talking to the police? To the gorjers? No. It would never happen. Traveller silence was sacred. They didn’t talk to outsiders.

A vehicle rumbled into the muddy yard. Dex closed his eyes, knowing it was Braden. Mikey released him and stepped away. He called a terse greeting through the open door. Braden’s reply was gruff, and for a moment, Dex wondered if Mikey would make his move. Express his discontent and strike out. Kill Braden, or disable him. Perhaps there’d even be a moment for Dex to slip away. He wasn’t bound, and his legs still worked. He could run.

I can run.

But nothing happened. Mikey said no more and left the house, abandoning him to Braden’s ill will and deepening temper. Chains, leather belts, and iron bars. Dex bore it all in silence until his wrist bone broke with an audible snap.

About Heart

1Cornish pastry chef Seb Wright dreads the summer tourist season. The cash injection to his artisan fudge pantry is more than welcome, the extra work, less so. Then one summer, a shadowy Good Samaritan catches his eye. Irish Traveller Dex is bewitching, a beautiful sullen enigma who turns Seb’s world upside down until he disappears in the night, vanishing like a mystical summer rain.

Twelve months later Dex is in the midst of a dark storm. A slave to his master, ‘Uncle’ Braden, he spends his days cleaning caravans and his nights working in Braden’s other businesses. His short summer with Seb seems a lifetime ago. Lost in the savage violence of the murky underworld, he doesn’t dare dream he’ll ever find his way back, until one night, a brutal crime opens the door for a chance escape. A new life beckons, old faces emerge, and immersed in the heady vibe of London’s East End, new love begins to heal his fractured heart.

He’ll partner with some crusty old mountain man; they’ll patrol the wilderness in a tanker, speak three words a day, and Old Crusty won’t be alluring at all. A national forest is big enough to be Jake’s closet—he’ll spend his free time fishing.

Except Old Crusty turns out to be Kurt Carlson: confident, competent, and experienced. He’s also young, hot, friendly, and considers clothing optional when it’s just two guys in the wilderness. Sharing a small cabin with this walking temptation is stressing Jake’s sanity—is he sending signals, or just being Kurt? And how would Kurt react if he found out his new partner wants to start a fire of a different kind? Jake’s terrified—they have to live together for five months no matter what.

Enough sparks fly between the rangers to set the trees alight, but it takes a raging inferno to make Jake and Kurt admit to the heat between them.

Honorary Blogger Garrett Leigh: Mental Health—Let Us Not Be Silent – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Mental Health—Let Us Not Be Silent

by Garrett Leigh

A few months ago, I got an email regarding Slide that broke my heart, not because it was negative,(it wasn’t, in the grand scheme of things), or because the reader didn’t like the book (they didn’t seem to give a f*** either way), but because of two sentences that blew me away with their ignorance.

Ash’s psycho issues bored me. I wished he’d just take some Valium and get medicated already.

What the actual fuck? Are you bloody kidding me? Do we really live in a world where people, young and old, suffering with crippling mental health disorders are expected to take their tranquilizers and keep quiet?

Sadly, I think we do.

But that’s not what ‘inspired’ me to write Ash the way I did. That’s just something that winds me up and I felt like shouting about…

Ha. No. For me, Ash’s character came from personal experience, both my own and those close to me, mixed with a healthy dash of my dark imagination. At several points during the production of Slide, it was suggested to me (not by my lovely publisher) that perhaps the story—the romance—would be better served by the dulling down of what turned out to be a full scale, no holds barred, psychotic break for Ash, but I ignored them, because, for me, and many others who’ve read Slide since, the depth of Ash’s convoluted mental health issues was what made them realize just what poor Pete was dealing with every time he made a bad decision, or handled Ash badly.

Drug addiction, abuse, trauma, PTSD. You’ll find them all in Slide, and its sequel, Rare, and I’m bloody proud of both books, for that, if nothing else…

So, yeah, I hope that answers your question, or at least gives you some insight into how Slide came to be.

Thanks for having me!

Garrett ❤

About Slide

Slide (Roads, #1)Don’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

An Excerpt from Slide

Ash was Texan by birth, but his southern roots only laced his speech when he was too tired to repress them… too tired to block out all the horrible shit that kept an invisible barrier between us.

He was just seventeen when his friend Ellie found him drawing on the streets of Philadelphia. He was homeless and drew comic book characters on the sidewalk for money. The way she told it, he was one of the best street artists in the city, but he said he just did it to survive. Ellie was in college at the time, and she spent the next three years trying to get him to go to a shelter. Eventually, she got her way, and when she moved back to Chicago a few months later, she asked him to come with her. It took him a year of procrastination and pulling his shit together, but after finishing his tattoo apprenticeship in Philly, he did just that.

Living together was a huge adjustment for both of us. Some days I thought we’d cracked it, but others….

I draped the comforter over us and tucked it around his shoulders. He settled against me with his arm stretched out across my torso. I ran my hand absently along his bicep and enjoyed the rare moment. Though he could be tactile when his mood was right, he rarely cuddled up to me so freely. Most times, he preferred our positions reversed—him on his back with his arms around me.

Curious, I pressed a kiss to the top of his sweat-dampened head. “You okay?”

“Yeah, I just missed you.”

I smiled into the darkness. “I missed you too.”

A light hum was his only answer, so I held him a bit tighter and made the most of having him curled against me. After a while, I felt him shift. I opened my eyes and quirked an eyebrow, too mellow to speak. He just stared at me, but his blazing eyes told me what I knew he found so hard to articulate.

I put my hand to his head and nudged it back down with a sad smile.

Honorary Blogger BA Tortuga: Kleenex? Hell, Y’all Need a Whole Box. Maybe a Roll of Paper Towels + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Kleenex? Hell, Y’all Need a Whole Box. Maybe a Roll of Paper Towels

by BA Tortuga

I have to tell y’all, writing Say Something just about broke me. I still to this day can’t read the book without bursting into tears a dozen times. Maybe more.

I mean, seriously, what was I thinking, writing about a cowboy that can’t leave home and a man that can’t stay there? Grins My wife would tell you, obviously I was working my shit out. 😉

You see, if you asked my daddy, he’d tell you I was like Mike. I ran away from home in high school. I left my hometown and I never looked back. I have lived in Georgia, California, North Carolina, Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico and all over Texas, but I never moved back to Greenville. He’d tell you I was citified, that I am stubborn and prideful and I refuse to settle.

If you asked my mother, she’d tell you I was like Jenson. I work from home, I need to know where my place is in the world, and I love the western lifestyle with a passion. I am the keeper of old things, the one that follows the old ways, and the one that plans every second before I make a move. She’d tell you I was old-fashioned, that I am stubborn and prideful and I refuse to settle.

Mike and Jenson came to me one afternoon when we were still living in Texas, talking about moving to New Mexico. We were losing Julia’s dad to cancer. I’d lost one of the most important people in the universe. My sister was sick, my daddy had a mini-stroke, my babiest sister was getting married. Julia and I had just gotten engaged. I was having a think about what to do, you know?

Can I leave Texas? Can I stay knowing that J and I could never get married?

My heart hurt, so much, and Mike and Jenson said, “us too”.

There was no way I could leave them without a story. No way.

The neat part?

They got their story and so did Julia and I. I’ll take it.

Much love, y’all.

About Say Something

1Jenson has loved Mike his whole life, but he has never known how to tell Mike how he feels. After high school Mike leaves for college and his Hollywood dream, while cowboy Jenson stays behind in their small East Texas hometown. Neither man knows what to say to go beyond friendship, even though they come together through all of the best and worst times of their lives. The most amazing moments keep bringing them back together, but through huge love and terrible loss, sickness and health, their timing never seems right to take their relationship to the next level. When the universe gives them one final chance, Jenson must overcome his fear and say the most important something before it’s too late.

An Excerpt from Say Something

“So, this guy, he’s the one?” Ricky leaned over the edge of the bed, head dangling down.

“That kills brain cells, man.” Mike looked at himself in the mirror, working the thick pancake makeup to make the scar less noticeable.

“Uh-huh. So does green, and we smoke that. The scar is hot, honey. Leave it alone.”

Mike grunted. “He’s only ever seen it with stitches.”

“He’s, like, a real cowboy?”

“Uh-huh. We’ve been together forever. I just… I can’t believe he’s coming.” Really coming, here. Jenson. Finally. Mike touched up his eyeliner, and looked at himself again. Maybe glasses….

“You’re such a big queen.” Ricky laughed, waving at him upside down.

“You’re just jealous that I’m not your big queen.”

“Nah. You’re too toppy.” Ricky cackled, and Mike had to laugh. Everyone knew Rick would bottom up for anyone.

“Oh yeah. I’m a big bad leather daddy.” He turned and flexed, playing happily. Ricky was going to be a model. Hell, the guy was already working. Him, though, he still wanted to act.

He thought he could. His profs said he had talent. He just had his damned face to overcome.

The phone rang, and he spun around. “Oh God. Do you think it’s him?”
