Author Q&A: Lee Colgin + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Please welcome Lee Colgin to The Blogger Girls!

How do you get inspired to write?

Usually there’s a particular scene that comes to me first and the rest of the story is built around that. I daydream about it until the ideas are flowing, then I usually start jotting stuff down. I like to think about ideas for my writing while I’m out walking. I have six dogs, so I’m out walking a lot!

Reading also helps. Reading a good book makes me want to write a good book!

Six dogs?

Haha, yes! They usually work with me and my husband, but we’re grounded now due to Covid 19. They’re all rescues, and we tour a circus show together. Right now all our events are cancelled through July, so we’re home trying to learn how to garden. I have never been at my own house this time of year, I’ve always been out touring. It’s fascinating seeing stuff bloom in my yard that I didn’t know was there. Apparently we have tiger lilies! This is the longest I’ve stayed in one place since 2002.

How is that affecting your writing?

It’s weird. You’d think I’d be more productive, because suddenly I have so much more time, but I’m finding it hard to focus. I’ve heard this from other writers as well. The constant anxiety over the state of the world write now sometimes makes it hard to sit down and write.

Though the longer this goes on, the more numb I feel. I have to remember, I have no control over when I can get back to my regular job, so it’s best to let that go. The more I let go, the easier it is to sit down and enjoy writing. I’m working on a round of edits at the moment, but I’m nearly done. After that I can get back to my WIP, a MM paranormal about a witch who saves the world and the vampires who saves him.

You’re a hybrid author, working with a publisher and also self-publishing, tell us about that.

I’m lucky to have found Ninestar Press. They are a great small press to work with and I’ve learned a lot about publishing from them. Ninestar gave me the confidence I needed to try and figure out self-publishing. There are lots of details involved in getting a manuscript ready for readers. The cool thing about working with Ninestar, is they handle so much of that for you, and as an author, you can focus on writing. I love that. But it’s also a slow process, and the nice thing about self-publishing is the speed. I actually published my fourth book, Slay My Love, as my debut novel because that’s just how the timing played out. I love both, and plan to continue pursuing both in the future.

Thank you for featuring my new release on your blog. I appreciate the opportunity!

Best,

Lee
