The Last Nights of The Frangipani

by Bey Deckard

Blurb: All James wanted was a little solitude at his favourite resort: bright sunshine overhead, soft, white sand underfoot, and a hammock to read in while the warm breeze rustles through the coconut palms and almond trees. However, when an old acquaintance shows up, and James is obliged to share “his” beach, a profound exchange over a bottle of rum leads to a lust-fuelled encounter in the dark.

Reeling from the intensity of the drunken tryst, James decides to cut his vacation short rather than face what he’s kept hidden under mountains of denial.

However, his escape is thwarted when Rudie, handsome and plainspoken, calls him out on his behaviour and makes him see that life needn’t be spent running away from his desires.

Set at a rundown old resort on a small Caribbean island, The Last Nights of The Frangipani is a story about letting go of fear and learning that passion and love can be found in the most unexpected of places.

The Last Nights of The Frangipani is scheduled to release September 12, 2015!

Exclusive Excerpt from The Last Nights of The Frangipani

I heard what sounded like a mumbled curse, and just as I looked up, the lock finally gave, sending the loosely hinged door crashing against the wall.

Rudie smiled sheepishly at me.

“Sorry,” he said, lifting a hand. “I will bother you no more, I promise. It was a long, terrible flight. I will leave you to your reading. Goodnight, James.”

I nodded at him again, and he hefted his suitcase, disappearing into the little whitewashed hut. The lights went on, and through the thin, sun-bleached curtains, I could see him looking around the small space. It would be the same as mine: an ancient queen-sized bed, a tiny bathroom, a counter with a camp stove, and a bar fridge that would alternate between barely cooling and thoroughly freezing.

My interest in a cold beer was renewed with that thought, and I climbed awkwardly out of the hammock to go fetch one. As I stood blindly groping around in the dark for the bottle opener, I saw through the kitchen window that Rudie had stripped off his sweaty T-shirt. Standing in the middle of his room, he stretched his arms behind his back a few times, and then began to massage his neck, thumb and forefingers digging into his skin.

Rudie was built like a dancer or a swimmer, the muscles long and lean on his frame, and when I spied the sheen of sweat between his shoulder blades, my hands stilled in their search—the huts were so close together that I was privy to every detail. Mouth dry and heart beating fast, I watched him from my darkened hut, unable to look away when he began to undo his belt, then his jeans.

I saw the round, pale hillocks of his ass, dimples above each pert cheek, the dark cleft, lightly furred….

My hand moved of its own volition, and the bottle opener I had been looking for went flying into the metal sink. The reverberating clangour was shockingly loud in the small room, and Rudie spun around, eyes wide and lips parted in surprise. Though I wasn’t sure if he could see me, I ducked anyway, breathing quietly with my forehead against the warped melamine counter. I felt ashamed of myself, spying on him in the dark like some pervert. When I finally straightened, his light was off.

Pulse racing like mad from the thought that he might be staring back at me in the dark, I quickly fished the bottle opener out of the sink and exited the hut. It was only when I had carefully reclaimed my spot on the hammock that I realized I hadn’t actually brought out a beer with me. Eyes closed, I swayed listlessly in the hammock for a little bit, before giving up and calling it a night.

About Bey Deckard

Born and raised in a small coastal town in northern Québec, Bey spent his early summers on his uncle’s boat and running wild on the beaches of the surrounding islands, lighting fires, and building huts out of driftwood and fishermen’s nets. As an adult, he eventually made his way to university and earned a degree in Art History with a strong focus on Anthropology. Primarily a portrait painter and graphic artist, Bey sat down one day and decided to write about the two things that he felt most passionate about: sex and the sea.

Bey currently lives in the wilds of Montréal with his best buddy, a spotty pit bull named Murphy.

You can find out more about Bey on his Website, Facebook or Goodreads.
