GRL Blog Tour: Pearl Love – Genre Bending

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Genre Bending

by Pearl Love

Full confession time: I am not a romantic person. I don’t have a lot of interest in romance in my everyday life. So why do I write romance novels, and why M/M romance novels in particular? The answer to the latter is fairly straight forward. I like the thought of pretty men together. And I’m intrigued by the apparently radical notion of putting characters in situations where they just happen to be gay rather than being completely defined by their sexuality.  The answer to the first question, however, is the basis of why I prefer to write stories that don’t fit within the contemporary mold. For me, it’s all about “romance and.”

Romance and Sci-Fi: This is by far my favorite type of story because it can run the gamut of time–from past, to the present, to the far future. This is the genre that allows me to really let my geek flag fly. I am a long-standing science fiction fan and comic book nerd. Heck, I saw Marvel’s “Avengers” five times in the theater! And we won’t talk about how many times I’ve seen the Star Wars movies over the course of my lifetime. Give me stories that center around technology and scientific theories that have yet to be discovered. Give me worlds with spaceships and sentient artificial intelligence, with scientifically-derived super humans and technology-driven crime fighting. But even more than the high-tech wonder, the most interesting thing about these worlds are the characters that live within them. I want to know how they live, what they care about, and who they love. So, give me a romance about pretty men shooting laser guns, and I’m as happy as can be!
Romance and High Fantasy: Pretty men with long hair. Pretty men with long hair and swords. Pretty men with long hair and swords who use magic and don’t wear a lot of clothing. I think you see my point. Fantasy is all about world building and letting your imagination run wild, which are the best aspects of writing fiction. The concept of M/M romance in a setting that is completely bereft of the rules and mores of our mundane experience is what makes romantic fantasy fiction such a delight to write and to read.

Romance and Urban Fantasy: These are the dangerous waters into which I dipped my toe with my very first book, and which remain near and dear to my heart. How to meld a captivating romance with elements of the fantastic set within the real–or mostly real–world? This is the constant challenge and freedom of urban fantasy. Urban fantasy offers the best of all genres. Want to read a contemporary romance with a little something extra hidden beneath the surface? Check. Want to read about sexy vampires and hot werewolves stalking unsuspecting men in a big city? Check. Want to read a story with elements of magic or sci-fi set within a recognizably modern setting? Check again! What’s not to like?

So, to sum up, I love writing and reading genre romantic fiction because it allows the writer and reader to explore beyond the basic tropes of boy-meets-boy. To me, fiction is all about exploring life beyond the everyday, and that’s what makes “romance and” so appealing.

Honorary Blogger Taylor V. Donovan: It’s A Serial Problem + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

It’s A Serial Problem

by Taylor V. Donovan

Hey, all!

As you may or may not know, I’ve been on tour all over the gay romance blogiverse promoting my upcoming release. Hearsay  is Book 1 in a trilogy featuring Derrick Swain and Roman Bradford, and pretty much the beginning of their journey towards happiness.

Yes, I’m writing another series, even though I’ve only released two titles in my other series, By Degrees

The thing is, I have a weakness for well developed characters. I want to know who they really are, what makes them happy and what makes them tick. I want to develop a relationship with them as individuals before they become someone’s better half. Long-lasting relationships, in my opinion, take a lot of work, bending, and compromising. In order for me to believe a couple will live happily ever after, I have to see them hit rock bottom first. I have to see them face stuff together, and I have to believe they’re truly willing to fight for the person they love.

People in love need time to become a real couple. They have to show their bad side, their quirks, their annoying habits, and the other person needs time to decide if that’s something they can deal with. This is the reason Bylaws was born. Derrick and Roman have serious issues to deal with, and doing so will take time. In Hearsay we’ll see one of our guys doing everything he can to get the man he wants, while our other protagonist resists the pull with everything he has. Why? Because some people think love isn’t enough… because they believe that, when you really love someone, you need to let them go. And why does our guy think that? You’ll have to read Hearsay to find out. 🙂

And speaking of finding things out…

If you’ve read Six Degrees of Lust there’s a very good chance you called me some unrepeatable names for leaving a certain scene out. I’m a few years late, but I’m about to make it up to you. 🙂  Coming soon—next week—look for Slingin’ Ink… but only if you’re already read Six Degrees of Lust. Otherwise you’ll get spoiled.

And, speaking of getting spoiled… How about you all spoil me by sharing your thoughts on insta-love versus slow build-up? I brought a copy of Hearsay with me to give away, plus a paperback, plus this cute little bag with the Bylaws logo, because, yes, I like branding my stuff, too. So go ahead. Leave a comment for a chance to win.

Good luck, everyone, and many thanks to The Blogger Girls for hosting me today.

Ta for now!

Taylor

About Hearsay

Hearsay_600x900Senior associate attorney Derrick Swain wants it all: a loving husband, a fulfilling career, and a couple of kids. After years of hard work he’s on the fast track to a promotion. He’s also met the man of his dreams. A week of daily lunch meetings in Central Park provides the perfect setting to get to know him better, and Derrick thinks it won’t be long before they take the next step and go on a date. But instead of asking him out, the object of his affection stops showing up without explanation, leaving him to wonder what went wrong.

As part owner of one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City, Roman Bradford knows that professional success isn’t the be all end all. Although he’s been lucky in life, true love has eluded him for the most part. One too many failed relationships have caused him to be leery of trying again, until he meets a man that can only be described as temptation personified. A few conversations is all it takes for Roman to start believing things will be different this time around. It doesn’t matter that they are boss and employee, or that he’s feeling too much, too fast. Not when he can see the same emotions in Derrick’s eyes. Then life turns on a dime, and Roman has no option but to let his chance at happiness go.

A battle of wills ensues when a life-altering case brings them together a year later. Roman wants to do the right thing by not letting anything happen between them, and Derrick is determined to prove they’re meant to be together. Evidence will be presented and final arguments will be made. Will they be able to come to an agreement, or will they opt to have their potential relationship dismissed?

About Hostile Ground

Enemy territory is a dangerous place to fall in love.

After the deaths of three undercover cops investigating a drug ring in a seedy strip club in Seattle, Detective Mahir Hussain has been sent to finish the job. He joins the club’s security team in the hopes of finding enough evidence to bust the operation before the men in charge find a reason to put him in a shallow grave.

To protect the strippers, only gay men can work the club. Ridley, the cold and intimidating head of security, knows exactly how to test potential new hires—including Mahir. From the minute they meet, Mahir and Ridley engage in a dangerous dance of sex and mind games. Mahir needs to find his evidence before Ridley figures out he’s a cop—and before they both grow too close to betray one another.

As the game goes on, Mahir burrows deeper into the operation, where he learns there’s much more happening than meets the eye . . . and why every cop who made it this far has been silenced with a bullet.

Hostile Ground is now available from Riptide Publishing.

A Hunted Man by Jaime Reese: Promo, Exclusive Excerpt + Giveaway!

A Hunted Man Blog Tour Banner

An Exclusive Excerpt from A Hunted Man

by Jaime Reese

He walked into his favorite diner and breathed a sigh of relief as he got a whiff of freshly baked cookies.

“Afternoon, Hunter. Turkey today?”

He nodded. “Thanks, Bill.”

Something was different. Incredibly different than yesterday it seemed. He looked around casually and observed the changes.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but this is probably the cleanest I’ve ever seen this place. You got rid of the boxes and…wait a minute, is that an espresso machine back there?” Hunter said with a wicked grin.

Bill scowled. “Don’t you start with me on that, too. We’ve got a coffee guy, you can hound him about it,” he said then focused on finishing the sandwich.

“Coffee guy?” he asked with piqued interest.

“Yeah, he started today. He’s out back with Lucy rearranging her workspace.” Bill walked over to the register with the sandwich on a tray and filled a cup with coffee with the usual mix. “I know you hate this stuff.”

Hunter feigned offense. “I don’t hate your stuff.”

Bill laughed. “I don’t know how you do it in court because you’re a horrible liar. I know you hate my coffee. It’s the only explanation for someone having that much cream and sugar with a tiny splash of coffee in it.”

Hunter squirmed. “I do love your sandwiches,” he said as he bent to view the display of baked goods, hoping to hide his embarrassment in the process.

“Good save. Maybe our coffee guy can figure out how to make a coffee you like that is actually coffee and not some sugar lava. Hey, Cam,” Bill yelled.

“Yeah, Bill.”

Hunter closed his eyes as the smooth voice unexpectedly weakened him. He felt as if he’d just been punched in the gut…repeatedly, then kicked in the balls a few times for good measure. Those two simple words in that firm yet silky tone attacked every muscle in his body.

He opened his eyes and tried to calm his racing pulse. Thank God for the clear glass that allowed him to peer through and watch the casual gait of the man as he approached, then turned to face the older, obviously shorter man. Hunter was hypnotized, tracing the perfect curve of the ass in profile, showcased for him through the dessert display case. How appropriate. Hunter took a deep breath and slowly straightened from his bent position to meet the new hire.

He froze.

Hunter raked his gaze up the man’s body, wishing the guy had worn a tighter shirt that would leave less to the imagination. He was young, a hair under six feet and lean with just the right amount of muscle. Hunter’s vivid imagination ran wild as he scanned every inch of this man and his pale skin. He glanced upward to see the dark, sandy brown hair hang lazily over the man’s eyes. Hunter’s gaze halted once it was met with the brightest blue eyes he had ever seen staring back at him.

Excerpt

God, Prophet fucking loved a good bar fight—hadn’t had one in a while. He sent tables and chairs flying, was more cautious with actual people, but hell, anyone who came at him got a good, sharp right hook.
Ren had, of course, started the fight when Mal gave the signal that Cillian was heading toward the bar. Now, Prophet and Tom were the only ones from their group left inside the bar, and Tom ambled over to him while he waited by the dancers’ platform that was mostly unharmed. As were the dancers.

“You all right?” Tom asked.

Prophet nodded, noting that Tom looked entirely too pleased with himself. “That felt good.”

Tom shook his head.

“What? I needed to release some tension.” Prophet stretched his neck. “I definitely don’t get to do that often enough.”

“There are other ways to relieve tension, Proph.”

“I know that. And now I’m going to try one of them.”

He grabbed Tom and yanked him close, rubbing his rough-stubbled cheek against Tom’s, knowing full well Tom loved the scratch and burn. “You fought too, Cajun.”

“Self-defense, pure and simple,” he protested. “And I saw Mal and Cillian. We were clear before the fight.”

“And after. Saw Cillian leave with the majority of the crowds,” Prophet confirmed. “Where were they?”

“Closer to the back.” Tom waved a hand casually in that direction. “Shouldn’t we leave?”

“Not till we get the all clear.”

He pulled Tommy onto the dance floor, wrapping around him, burying his face in Tommy’s neck. Tom did the same as they swayed. Partly so they wouldn’t be spotted, but mainly because it was really nice to be able to hold Tom like this.

“Want to fuck you right here,” Prophet murmured. “Get on my knees, suck you. Then turn you around, hold you against the pillar and take you in front of everyone.”

Tom groaned against Prophet’s ear.

“Ah, you like that idea,” Prophet shifted his glance to another couple, made sure Tom noticed they were stroking each other.

“Fuck,” Tom muttered. “We need to go to clubs more often.”

“Right,” Prophet teased. “Because we don’t have enough sex.” But really, sex with Tommy was everything. It was where and how he’d gotten the best possible education on everything Tommy—and he was well aware that Tom had gotten the same information on him. Until you really knew what someone was like in bed, you didn’t really know them at all.

“Never enough,” Tom informed him seriously. “And maybe I’d push you onto your knees. Then down on the ground. Spread you and fuck you in front of everyone.”

Prophet hissed a breath, bared his throat slightly. “You’d make me perform?”

“You’d fucking love it, Proph.”

Fuck yeah, he would. “When this is all over . . . that.”

“Yeah, that,” Tom echoed.

GRL Blog Tour: M.J. O’Shea – MJ’s Rules for GRL + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

HC: M.J. O’Shea is here at TBG today on the GRL Blog Tour sharing her tips on how to survive GRL (trust her…she’s a pro by now), and giving away an eBook copy of one of her books!

MJ’s Rules for GRL

by M.J. O’Shea

Hi, this is MJ O’Shea 🙂 I wanted to talk about my ‘rules’ for experiencing GRL. So I’m guessing someone else will write a similar post from their perspective, but that’s okay. At least I think it is, haha. Everyone is very different, has fun a different way and has different goals in mind when they leave for a big conference like GRL where (nearly) anything can happen. So this is MY top five GRL experience rules.

1. The lobby is the center of the world. Spend a lot of free time there — really, I swear. Never in my LIFE have I spent so much time in the lobby of any hotel that I’ve stayed in. But the lobby at GRL, at least so far, has been a great an informal place to meet people, talk, hang out, maybe have a drink or two… relax in your bathrobe?? (just to be clear, that wasn’t me). If you want to talk to people, head to the lobby! There will usually be someone down there to meet.

2. Find Starbucks ASAP (or some decent coffee) — I don’t know about everyone, but it seems like a lot of people don’t exactly sleep much at GRL. There’s too many people to talk to, too much to see and do. Sleep isn’t high on the agenda. Coffee can only help. I think we walked the mile or so to Starbucks in Atlanta every day. It was SO worth it.

3. Bring Comfortable shoes — sounds like a no brainer, but really. Do it. Half the time I’m wearing a pair of converse or chunky flip flops under my dresses. As far as I know, nobody cares lol. Typically there’s a lot of walking a lot of standing and then there’s dancing too. Nothing’s as big of a buzzkill as getting somewhere only to have your feet hurt. I didn’t realize before the first year just how much I’d be on my feet. That was the last time I even brought dress shoes. (yes, I even had chunky flip flops under my dress last year for the formal night. I’m pretty sure nobody saw them. I got sparkly ones. They were super fancy 🙂 )

4. Branch Out — A lot of people have their crews, either from online or previous years, but there are new people too! This is a great time to be as much of a social butterfly as you’re comfortable being. You’ll make new friends who you can meet up with another year, and the experience will be completely different than it would’ve been if you didn’t meet them. Of course, have fun with your current friends, but I always try to make the point of finding new ones. I know I’ve met new people every year that I can’t imagine not knowing now.

5. Be nice! — I’m not going to lie. Our genre, and by extension GRL can get a bit like high school sometimes. Rumors can fly, people can get upset with each other, and whether the info is true or false, everyone hears pretty much everything in the small GRL environment (even if you don’t think they heard it, you can probably assume they have). The best policy is to be nice and friendly with whoever you speak to and vent in private if you absolutely need to. Everyone just wants to have a good time 🙂

I think that’s it from me, other than that, have fun:) If it’s a new experience or you just want it to be a little different this year, there are lots of opportunities to have a great time at GRL if you make the most of it. I hope to see you there!

Xoxo

About M.J. O’Shea

MJ O'SheaI’m Mj O’Shea:) I grew up, and still live, in sunny Washington state in a little old house. While I love to visit other places, I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home.

I spent my childhood writing stories. Sometime in my early teens, the stories turned to romance. Most of those were about me, my friends, and our favorite movie and pop stars. Hopefully, I’ve come a long way since then!!

When I’m not writing, I love to go to concerts, hang out with my friends, play the piano (and my other instruments), dance, cook, paint pictures, and of course read! I really, really like coffee and tea, nail polish and glittery sparkly things, headbands, hats, scarves and sunglasses!

I have two little dogs who sit with me when I write. Sometimes they come up with ideas for me too…when they’re not busy napping of course.
