“I ROTATED THE zoom dial on my binoculars. The three-story stone house loomed large in my view.

Jade whispered behind me, “Colton, what’d you see?”

“Shhh.”

I surveyed the gloomy home from side to side. The house sat on the crest of a small hill and far from the cobbled street where I crouched. Spidery cracks filled a couple of the second-story windows. The paint had faded and peeled, and the rooftop sections were missing shingles. It had to be one of the oldest residences in Arklow.

“Colton,” Jade said, tapping my shoulder.

“Jade, you’re breaking me concentration.”

Huddled near the stone column at the end of the winding driveway, I inched around the base a bit farther to get a better look. A light, cool breeze blew, swaying the sea of tall weeds in the house’s lawn and filling my nose with the scent of dogs.

Deep, guttural barks erupted behind me. Startled, I whirled before realizing that the noise was just Jade’s ringtone. I glared while she squatted close to the curb, frantically patting the outside of her lightweight jacket in search of her phone.

“Are you a complete tool? Turn the blimey thing off.”

“Jade glanced up, her eyes wide. “Can’t find it.” Then she straightened, grinned at me, and said, “Found it.” She removed the phone from a side pocket, and the barking grew in volume. Brushing her lengthy brown hair from her face, she stared at the caller ID. “Oh…it’s me mum.”

“Shut it off! All of Ireland will know we’re here!”

She didn’t move but held the smartphone in both palms. The phone quit ringing finally, and she sighed. “I should go. It’s probably suppertime.”

“You can’t. This was your idea.”

A loud clanging echoed across the yard, and we both cowered behind the stone fence post. Adjacent to the old post, a crumbling stone wall shielded us from anyone standing by the house. When I poked my head around the ledge, nothing but the motionless tall weeds could be seen in the yard and the same gloomy look the house had had before. It was dead quiet.

Jade put her hands on my shoulders, her mouth next to my ear. “S-see, I told you. You believe me now? It’s haunted.”

I tried to speak, but my mouth was dry. I brought my binoculars up, gripping them hard.

“Probably just varmint inside,” I said.

“Aye. And maybe you and your butterfingers could be captain of the rugby team.”

“Har-har. You think the Kennedy twins really disappeared inside?”

Audio Tour: The Rainbow Clause by Beth Bolden + Exclusive Excerpt!

Exclusive Excerpt from The Rainbow Clause

by Beth Bolden

“Did you really not expect me to pick you up?” Colin asked.

Nick made a disbelieving noise. “Do you not have a PA? A hired car service?”

“Both.” Colin had the nerve to blush under his tan. “But it always seemed so rude to me. You’re not baggage to be collected. You’re here to see me. You’re going to stay with me. The least I can do is to pick you up from the airport.”

“You hate reporters,” Nick said slowly.

“And yet…you’re still not baggage,” Colin said. He paused. “And I don’t hate them. I…their methods bother me sometimes. I don’t usually trust them. But I don’t hate them.” Colin shot him a quick, pleading look, and Nick would have to be a hell of a lot dumber to not know what that look meant.

Or what it could mean, if Nick decided to forget all the rules he’d set for himself when he’d first started his career.

Don’t sleep with the athletes. Don’t like the athletes. Don’t fall for the athletes.

It had never been particularly hard to keep them, but Nick had a feeling he was about to be tested.

Nick had known he was in trouble since Colin had first stepped off that elevator into the Five Points office looking even hotter than his Sports Illustrated cover. Since LA, Nick had been walking a very fine line between winning Colin’s trust and giving his own away.

With a lot of sports stars he’d interviewed, Nick had been perfectly able to maintain a very professional distance, even while digging up all the dirt he could.

It was something he’d gotten very, very good at.

The problem was that Colin was smarter than that, and had assumed a position of pay to play. Colin wasn’t going to give without something in return. The invaluable barrier he’d been hiding behind, constructed with all those sarcastic quips he loved, was never going to work with Colin. He knew this was personal for Nick, and he wanted a front row seat to all the bruises.

Nick wanted to tell Colin, I hope you more than don’t hate me. But even if what crackled between them eventually flared into more, he needed to postpone the inevitable. Instead he said, “Hate the game, not the player.”

Colin shook his head, a chagrined but hopelessly amused smile blooming on his face. “And people say I’m a dork.”

“You are a dork,” Nick said. He couldn’t tell Colin that he had more integrity in his pinkie finger than most big shot NFL players had in their whole bodies.

Shaking everybody’s hand as soon as he entered a room. Holding doors open for women. Once leaving a sideline interview to find an umbrella for Erin Andrews. Speaking about everyone with respect, and expecting respect in return or he would immediately cut the interview off. Insisting on picking up a reporter from the airport himself. All of this combined to make Colin O’Connor who he was in the public eye, and while many might claim he wasn’t genuine, Nick thought they couldn’t have actually met Colin and believed that. While closed off and intensely private, he still radiated sincerity.

He didn’t want a rap career. He didn’t want his own clothing line. He didn’t want to get paid for attending any number of club openings. He didn’t want a chain of groupies. He wanted to play football and go home to a simple life. And to so many who didn’t understand, it looked old fashioned or dorky, but Nick had long believed it made him unique and authentic.

And that was the side of Colin O’Connor Nick was so desperate to show people.

“I wish more people were dorks,” Nick added, and Colin laughed.

“If everyone was boring like me, you wouldn’t have anything to write about.”

Colin was wrong; if everyone was boring like him, Nick would have more opportunities to write about the things that actually mattered.

Honorary Blogger T.A. Moore: Five Facts About James + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Five Facts About James

by T.A. Moore

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my stand-alone contemporary suspense Every Other Weekend. Every now and again an author (or at least THIS author) gets characters who drop fully formed and already opinionated into your brain. It happened with my Digging up Bones series, and again with Clayton and Kelly (and Baker, who was so much to write for that he has to get an honourable mention) in this book. Trust me, this was originally meant to be a much sillier book. There were hijinks planned, but Clayton almost immediately established he wasn’t into the ‘jinks.

Anyhow, I thought that since I loved these guys so much? You guys might like to learn a few important bits and pieces about them. Today? James, the soon-to-be-ex that Clayton is helping his client get rid off.

Five Facts about James

  1. James met his wife, Nadine, when she was a waitress in a local bar, one of the dozens of pretty blondes who’d were on the verge of aging out of the big break slot. She’d agreed to go out with his friend, so James set out to win over to…prove he could. He was charming and fun, silly sometimes, and it won her over. Once he did, he sent photos of her naked to his jilted friend. ‘Accident,’ he claimed. ‘Still, stop him sniffing around right?’
  2. He never wanted kids, but once she got pregnant he never pushed for an abortion. Talked to her for three days about what a disaster it would be for them to have a kid now, like for fucksake it would be an anchor around their neck, and left her an envelope of cash for ‘whatever she decided’. Once Nadine said he wanted the baby though, he let it go. Took the money back, though.
  3. Although James was never particularly interested in his son when Harry was a baby, there was a period when he was a toddler that James was really enamoured of him. It wore off as Harry got older and wasn’t exactly the son that James wanted.
  4. Sometimes he tells a lot of lies. He justifies this to himself, as much as he justifies anything, by the fact Nadine never asks about them. If she really wanted the truth, after all, she’d pry more.
  5. He doesn’t think he’s a bad guy.

Dark Rivers by Morgan Brice: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Dark Rivers

by Morgan Brice

Seth dropped a kiss on his cheek and stood. “Don’t touch my chips and sandwich,” he ordered. “I’m gonna brush my teeth and finish my lunch. I’m not full yet.”

Evan waggled his eyebrows. “I’ll give you full.”

“Rain check,” Seth called from the RV’s bathroom. “Hold that thought. Work to do.” He came back out and wrapped his arms around Evan. “God, I love you,” he said, brushing a kiss over Evan’s lips. He dropped back into his seat and made short work of the remains of his sandwich, as Evan sat across from him, finishing a soda.

“I think you should finish digging into the Brandon Clarke info,” Seth said after he finished the last of his chips.

“Why me?” Evan asked, toying with the empty can. “You already got it started.”

“Because you were a little uncomfortable about me gathering intel about you, back in Richmond,” Seth said gently.

“I know better now,” Evan countered. “I was just afraid—” He didn’t have to finish his sentence. Seth knew Evan’s fears had root in his stalker ex-boyfriend, Mike Bradshaw. Evan hadn’t opened up completely about everything that had happened with Mike, years before, but Seth knew enough to know Evan’s ex had been controlling and abusive—both physically and emotionally. Little by little, Evan shared more of that painful story, usually prompted by nightmares that left him trembling in Seth’s arms while Seth coaxed him back to sleep, silently vowing to thrash Mike to a pulp if he ever crossed paths with the asshole.

“That’s why I want you to see how the process works, first-hand,” Seth coaxed. “We’re trying to save Brandon’s life, but we have to know everything we can about him to do that.”

Evan nodded. “I get it, now. And I can do that. I’ve gotten really good at research.”

Seth drew him close and stretched up to kiss his forehead. They were close to the same height, though Seth was a fraction of an inch taller and had twenty or so pounds of muscle on Evan. Seth’s muscular frame had been built by high school athletics and his time in the military. Evan’s lean muscle came from running, parkour, and their daily workouts and sparring. He might have a more slender build than Seth, but Seth loved Evan’s defined muscles, and the flexibility earned through years of yoga paid off handsomely in the bedroom.

“You’re good at lots of things,” Seth said, stepping back before his twitching cock could make them go for round two. “And I mean it on that rain check. But right now, what do you say we go take a look at one of the places on the list Milo sent me?”

“Haunts or urban legends?” Evan asked, looking for his boots as Seth cleared away the dishes and tossed their empty cans in the garbage.

“Both,” Seth replied, lacing up his own Timberlands. “Witches, murder, and restless ghosts—so the stories say.”

They locked up the trailer and walked through a dusting of new snow to get to the truck. The RV park was almost deserted this time of year. Come summer, the pool and mini golf would be full of kids and families on vacation, and the activities room would echo with shouts from the air hockey and Foosball tables, or the bells and sound effects from the pinball machines and retro arcade games, vying for attention over the sports scores on the big screen TV. But now, with the bare trees and a sprinkle of unbroken snow, the empty park looked almost post-apocalyptic.

“Kinda looks like there should be zombies,” Evan said, rousing Seth from his thoughts and proving their minds had run in the same direction. “I always wonder who the other folks are who are camped out at this time of year.”

Seth shrugged. “Retirees. Loners. People who don’t have anywhere else to go.” The two years he had spent after Jesse’s death, learning from Toby and Milo, seeking out hunts to hone his skills, had taken him far from his Indiana home, to plenty of places like this campground. Before, he’d kept the loneliness at bay by throwing himself into research or workouts, or dulling the edge of dreams and memories with whiskey.

Having Evan with him changed everything. Evan wasn’t just his lover, he was his partner on the hunt, a companion on the road, the best friend he hadn’t realized he’d needed. Seth couldn’t imagine going back to the way things were, which just made him all the more intent on assuring that Evan stayed happy, safe, and with him.

Evan took his hand and gave it a tug with a look that told Seth his lover had guessed his thoughts. “Not going anywhere without you,” he reassured. “Now come on. Let’s go see this place Milo thinks we need to check out. Don’t forget, it gets dark early this time of year.”

When you fall for a guy who’s about to become your stepbrother—do you listen to your heart and risk everything? Or listen to your head…and take one step back?

In high school I had a hundred reasons to steer clear of my soon-to-be-stepbrother, Joe Beneventi. He was a hothead, and I was reserved. His life was football, mine was academics. He wanted to be out and proud, and I desperately needed to keep my orientation secret.

But when we fell in love, my heart took the wheel, and I took every risk to be with Joe. Then one horrible night our secrets shattered. Joe disappeared—wrecking our families and breaking my heart.

Eleven years later, I landed a challenging job at a premier PR firm. And the hotshot publicist who’s been assigned to my first big account? Yep. It’s Joe.

Fate truly hates me because now Joe and I have three days to hole up in a Chicago hotel room and nail down a deal that could make or break our careers. He keeps distracting me, but I’m too jaded to fall for sexy smiles, bedroom eyes, and his impossible-to-ignore body. Except…

I like being close to him again. A little too much. Working together 24/7 is showing me sides of Joe I’ve never seen before.

And when we touch, being together seems like the only step worth taking.
