Author Q&A: Cari Z. + Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Please welcome Cari Z. to The Blogger Girls!!

What made you want to become an author and why choose the genres that you write in?

I don’t know that becoming an author is a choice for most of us, so to speak. When you’ve got stories to tell, they will be told, period. And while I started with m/m historical fiction, most of what I write is speculative because I like not being bound by pesky things like reality.

What was the first scene you wrote that made you cry?

Oh, jeez, when I killed someone. Not a major character, but a minor one I loved. The plot demanded death and I fed the beast, but it definitely brought a tear to my eye.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Both. Either. When I’m already full of energy, writing lifts me up. When I’m tired, it wreaks havoc on me. Being a new mom, you can guess which state I’m in more often these days. *sigh*

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Social media. I use Cold Turkey for a reason—when I’m on deadline, Google is good, Twitter is bad.

For readers who haven’t read you, do you want each book to stand on its own, or do you try to build a body of work with connections between each book?

I haven’t written a lot of series, so generally I think most of my books stand on their own. I don’t have an overarching universe that people need to acquaint themselves with to find their feet with my writing. Except in my free stuff, but hey—free!

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Publishing gave me a sense of urgency that only increases. It’s not a bad thing, either—it’s beneficial to be able to hit a deadline in more ways than just writing life.

What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

Oh boy, of mine or someone else’s? I guess my favorite under-appreciated novel that I wrote is Tempest, which I’m going to be re-releasing in the new year now that I’ve got rights back to it. It’s a fairytale gone dark (ha, like most of them need any help) and I love almost everything about it. And for someone else’s novel? Huh, I don’t know if it’s underappreciated or not, but at this time of year I like to re-read Christopher Moore’s The Stupidest Angel. It puts me in that zombie-tastic holiday spirit.

And a silly question…. What would you choose to be your spirit animal?

Right now I’m staring at my daughter’s closest stuffed animal, which is part monkey, part tiger and part crocodile, and—that. I think that’s a pretty good representation these days 😉 Continue reading

The Begin Again Series – What to Expect! And Other Future Projects

by Morningstar Ashley

When this series started it was just going to be a standalone of Mac and Bennett, but Jaden snuck in loud and clear and said “I want a damn happily ever after!” so, of course, he gets his wish. And the poor guy he’s going after doesn’t stand a chance. I wonder if people have figured out who it is? 😉

Then, there’s Allie, who in the course of writing A Different Light, I fell in-love with! I mean she is the kind of person I’d love to be, with her tattoos, throwing gender norms out the window, and complete sass! She has fought so hard in her life to be true to herself in a town that would love for her to go quietly back to where she was hiding. She will get her story after Jaden, and it will most likely be a novella at some point next year. AND, it’ll be a F/F story but one that for those that do not enjoy those, they can skip it without worrying about missing any important developments.

Then just this past week, two things happened LOL. First, Mac and Bennett decided they weren’t quite done. There’s just one more story they want told and it’ll most likely be a Christmas story, mainly because of scheduling. And it’’ be sappy and cute with all kinds of lovey stuff if Mac has any say. The second thing that happened is a secondary character decided he too wanted his HEA. If you’ve read the book and you remember Jesse, the senior boy that was about to graduate high school, you will see him in the future, although I’m not quite sure when.

So, what is this series about? This is about beginning again, starting over to find your happy. Sometimes that means working through a problem from the past, or working toward something for your future. Like Bennett had to work passed his judgements and his fear. Mac had to work passed the hurt caused by his parents and the guilt he carried for the last ten years. All the characters who live, or work, or move to White Acre will find their home, find their love, and most of all find themselves.

Lastly, regarding the Love By Design series, Peter’s book will be coming, I promise! He’s being a bit broody and quiet letting Bennett and Jaden step up and get theirs first. I think he just wants to put off finding his guy because he’s a chicken, but hey, that’s just my opinion. My goal for him is mid-year as long as he cooperates! After Peter, brings us Ben! It’ll be a busy year! Continue reading

Get Up by Reece Pine: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Get Up

by Reece Pine

I’m alive.

Safe.

Alone? Where’s NickOh. Guy remembered Nick was a country away, if not a dimension, and probably in someone else’s bed by now. They’d split up a month before. In consolation and maybe correlation, Guy’s mind was working just fine after its flare-out at the hut’s front door. He remembered catching planes and a ride from a middle-of-nowhere Canadian town to the barren fringe of Canadian nowhere, and then staggering through a frozen hell until his life depended on the very person he’d come to rescue.

Guy had been foolishly glad he hadn’t printed out the manuscript that Fairbanks’s owner and director, Huw, emailed him. He recalled reading it at home and thinking all it was fit for was kindling, which was all he had wished for earlier in the snow. The memory of his being cold was hardest of all to get a hold on, possibly because it was traumatic, but probably also because right then he was strangely warm. Hot bath warm. Shared bed warm. Afterglow warm… BecauseI’m naked?

The assumption he was safe fell away, along with the musty blanket covering his chest as he jolted up in bed in a tiny dark room. He was naked and trapped at the mercy of a supernaturally pretty being in the next room, the son of a ghost, who was himself too much of a vivid apparition and just plain too short to have carried Guy in here. He must have been dragged—and drugged? What was in that coffee to make him overheat like that? And why the hell was he naked?

A dim golden glow from beneath the bed spilled across the wooden floor. Guy hung his head over the side of the thin mattress, half expecting fireflies or a chatty French candelabra or anything else fairy-tale-like. Luckily, there were no monsters—instead a cast-iron pan containing a handful of charcoals sat atop a steel tripod beneath the bed’s metal slats. He had to admit its heating properties were a lot more efficient than a hot water bottle and more romantic, too, lending a candlelit glow to the room. Exposed beams overhead made him feel like Pinocchio inside a ribbed belly, and the marbled grays seen through a small window looked like a paused scene on a black-and-white TV.

He crept off the bed, folding the blankets so they were nowhere near the charcoal bowl, and padded on bare feet to the window. Shards of a thermometer glinted on the outside sill, having shattered from the cold. They displayed a temperature locked perpetually high, mocking his earlier trial by tundra.

His breath clouded in the wan light as he layered on clothing from his suitcase, which was propped by the room’s door. A knitted red woolen sweater was folded on a rickety chair. He unfolded it to see a garish Christmas pattern emblazoned on its front, which he wasn’t sure was meant to be ironically ugly or not. Since De Carli’s son had already no doubt seen his cock at attention, which Nick had called the only warm part of Guy, he figured he shouldn’t be vain, but he really didn’t want to wear it, and really hated knowing better than to reject it. He couldn’t help Cam if he collapsed from hypothermia again.

There’s a reason I’m asking you and no one else. Huw’s voice rang in his near-frostbitten ears. Besides the fact you’ll fit right in in the Arctic. You’re ‘castratingly cold,’ after all, according to Nick’s Facebook.

Even after fourteen years’ friendship, dating back to when De Carli’s books began to ruin Guy for all other fiction, Guy’s former college roommate, Huw, remained oblivious to all but superficially expressed emotions, so Guy had grunted to make his displeasure known. “I’m not cold.”

“You’re a bunny wrapped in an enigma, but me and Campbell need your judgmental stare. Well, he might like the bunny part, too.”

“Campbell and I,” Guy had corrected.

“Great, keep that up, editor.” Huw had scratched the air, making quotes around the last word. “Anyway, Campbell’s probably a Popsicle himself out there, so defrost him with all your actual warmth because I need his book okayed. How often do you get a sure thing in publishing? Never, that’s how often, unless you’ve got, like, George R. R. Martin’s kid’s debut.”

“He’s De Carli’s son.” Guy had hated the comparison. De Carli was better.

Fairbanks had spent eight months wrangling Cam’s debut, only to be served an injunction, lodged by his older sister, who claimed the manuscript was stolen from their father’s estate. Huw had only ever communicated with Cam online, and not thought to connect his common real name with the uncommon phenomenon who had been De Carli. No one had. The publishing grapevine hadn’t heard anything since Cam had been institutionalized for suicidal intent for a month after De Carli’s fatal heart attack two years earlier, then disappeared upon release. Remembering that, Huw figured family bickering over probate wasn’t something to spring on him from afar, especially when the injunction was suppression ordered, making its claim more than a little suspicious.

After eagerly—then less eagerly—skimming Cam’s book, Guy had vouched it wasn’t an authentic De Carli. If the kid had desecrated a stolen draft to pass it off as his own work, he’d done too good a job. Unfortunately, Guy’s fanboy opinion wouldn’t make great testimony, and even he conceded the manuscript bore some similarity with De Carli’s, which could be due to their shared tastes or family history…but maybe not. Huw had convinced him to go covertly to uncover proof in the form of drafts, and judge Cam’s authenticity, too.

In one of his very few interviews, De Carli had said, “My son is a simple boy. He wants for nothing.” Journalists interpreted that as meaning homeschooled Cam had special needs, so hadn’t pried. It surprised Guy to learn Cam had earned a doctorate in ecology last year at the age of twenty-two, mostly completed online, and had then assisted with wildlife projects abroad. The few available scientists Huw had tracked down attested Cam was competent, code for nothing else good to say. In other words, he was probably a precocious little…handful.

That and the kid’s current dubious rabbit search didn’t make for a stellar start to his research career, but was nothing compared to what Cam would face if he was found to have plagiarized his father. It’d destroy not just his career writing books, but also science journal articles that were as dry as the wings of his PhD subject, moths. The articles he’d previously cowritten all conformed to academic templates, so there was no comparison with his fiction, no way to tell if he’d forged the latter.

The chance to escape social circles shared with his ex for the time being was icing on the cake. Nick had liked the mystery of Guy’s mask enough to seduce him, then grown quickly bored of its not melting under his hand. The fact that Guy honestly wasn’t mysterious was a secret he seemed cursed to bear. No matter how many times he assured the Nicks of the world that he really was just that calm, it wasn’t enough, and that was about all that made his blood simmer. To be fair, it wasn’t Nick’s fault that all that made Guy’s heart race was analyzing a good book or an interesting person. The chance to meet De Carli’s son, who was himself a shimmering incubus with a shady past, had Guy almost trembling even before he’d hit the cold.

Exhaling deeply, Guy told himself now to chill, almost wringing a smile from himself as he entered the hut’s main room.

Gemini Keeps Capricorn by Anyta Sunday: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Gemini Keeps Capricorn

Music started, and Wesley grabbed Lloyd’s hand. Warm, tingly static skipped up his arm. After recovering from the shock, he tugged Lloyd and threaded him through the dancers.

They only made it halfway to Caleb before the director stopped the music.  “One-hundred-ninety-eight and ninety-nine. Why aren’t you dancing?”

The other dancers and band gawked at them. Caleb’s gulp was visible, and he almost dropped his flute.

The spotlight beamed down on Wesley and Lloyd, and Wesley quite liked it. He grinned. “We’re better in the background, by the band.” He glared at his brother, who at least had the decency to blush. Caleb lifted his hand and mouthed, “Five minutes.”

“Your partner is tall,” the director agreed, unconvinced.

Wesley nicked his head in Lloyd’s direction. “I worry he’ll outshine your main actors. You know, because of all the hotness.”

Lloyd laughed, and when Wesley whipped his head around to catch him, Lloyd’s lips settled into a teasing flat line. He lifted one eyebrow, though, and Wesley drilled him with a playful glare.

The director barked. “No, you’re good right there. When the music starts, we’ll pick up at the countdown. Draw close to your partners and it’s kissy-kissy time. Hooray, hooray, New Year’s is here. You know the drill.” He cued the band, who knocked out a beat in time with the crowd joyfully shouting a countdown.

Ten. Nine. Eight.

Lloyd’s gaze dropped to Wesley’s lips, and Wesley’s heart lurched into his throat.

Seven. Six.

Wesley licked his lips and laughed. “Well, this is something.”

“It’s something all right.” Lloyd rubbed a thumb over Wesley’s knuckles where Wesley was choking the life out of Lloyd’s hand. He lessened his grip with a sheepish grin.

Five. Four. Three.

Wesley shifted his feet around one of Lloyd’s and rested his shaky hand on his chest. “Kissy-kissy time.”

Lloyd dipped his head. Wesley’s stomach dropped to his knees and through his feet. Lloyd spoke into his ear, voice calm and steady. “It’s an audition. We shouldn’t.”

Two. One.

Lloyd shifted away, but Wesley looped his hand around Lloyd’s neck, gave him a diabolical grin, and kissed him. His lips met Lloyd’s with humored insistence, but he wasn’t ready for the warmth of Lloyd’s mouth. The taste of maple syrup from breakfast clung to the bow of his lip.

Wesley stilled his roaming hands against Lloyd’s shoulder blades, lips grazing off—

Lloyd slid his fingers through Wesley’s hair and cradled his head, drawing him closer.

Wesley’s veins sang with a surge of electricity. He listed against Lloyd’s strong chest, and Lloyd teased Wesley’s lips with his tongue.

Heat rocked through Wesley, and he kept kissing Lloyd well after the music had stopped.

When they parted, Wesley blinked, and blinked again. He only realized he was staring at Lloyd’s swollen bottom lip when Lloyd spoke, “Wesley?”

Wesley looked up into his questioning gaze.

The director yelled their numbers. “You two are out. Bye-bye.”

Wesley whirled toward the director. “You’re casting us out because of that kiss?”

“Yes. Go.”

“Are you completely off your rocker? That kiss was incredible.”

The director ignored him and rolled his finger at the band to wrap up. “Flute, thanks for coming in on short notice. Violin and trumpet, you’re up.”

Wesley scowled at the director. “Serious nut-job that needs glasses,” he muttered.

“He’s wearing glasses.”

Wesley threw his hands up. “See. Sight impaired.”

Lloyd regarded Wesley with amusement, and his face beamed. Wesley’s breath stalled.

The director shouting numbers yanked him out of his fog. Wesley snagged his brother and hurried the hell off stage.
