Exclusive Excerpt from His Fake Prison Daddy

by Thursday Euclid and Clancy Nacht

Elias sat on his bunk, deciding he should at least try to seem relaxed. “Guess that’s why they put me with you. We’re both readers.”

“Oh no, Mr. Stuyvesant. That’s not why they put you with me.” The smile vanished, leaving scars and those intense, charred-ember eyes gleaming in the cramped shadows of the small cell. His brow quirked, and he whispered almost flirtatiously, “You match my ‘victim profile’ beautifully. Someone up there doesn’t like you very much, little hacker.”

Elias dropped the book on his lap in shock at the sudden mood shift. Victim profile was hardly what anyone wanted to hear, but especially not in a tiny cell.

“Oh.” Keep it together.

Breath became scarce. Elias’s fingers tingled as adrenaline rose and his vision narrowed.

He’d known his sentence was unusually punitive. He’d assumed that was because the juvie warden had put him in such a privileged position, handling much of the IT and paperwork at the detention center.

Simple revenge for what the warden had called a betrayal.

What Elias hadn’t considered was that someone might want him dead.

Suddenly, he couldn’t breathe.

Was there poison on the book? What was happening to him?

As Elias struggled, Hughes swooped in and dropped to a crouch in front of him, hands hovering just above Elias’s body, not quite touching, as he looked up into his face. If Elias didn’t know better, he’d think Hughes was worried.

When he spoke, it was low and soothing, almost paternal. “Breathe with me, Stuyvesant. In two-three-four-five. Out…” Hughes modeled the breathing, coaxing Elias to mimic him.

Should he do it? Maybe this was all part of the scheme.

Terror spiked adrenaline in Elias’s veins, and he leaned against the wall, slowly sliding down onto his side.

What was the point of fighting? If Hughes wanted him dead like apparently the system did, what could Elias possibly do about it?

Elias closed his eyes. He could barely see anything anymore anyway. He breathed as Hughes instructed, curled up on his side in the fetal position. To his great surprise, he started to feel better.

Hughes came no closer, but he kept counting off Elias’s breaths, steady and slow and oddly comforting. “There you are, little hacker. You’re pulling through. A panic attack, I think. Hm.”

Sounding thoughtful, Hughes shifted away, still counting, and a moment later, what had to be Hughes’s own blanket settled over Elias. It smelled like clean soap and spice with a hint of acrid bleach, a weird mixture of industrial and personal.

Elias clutched the blanket and the book to him as he continued to take the long, slow breaths, watching Hughes more directly than he might’ve dared before.

A panic attack? He’d never had one before, but he supposed the situation could merit such a reaction. As Elias caught his breath, he felt able to speak again.

“Thought I was dying. Don’t eat me, not dead yet.” He tried a weak smile to show he was joking, but he was exhausted now.

Had he really been sent to this cell to die? That guard—Garcia?—had to have known.

But why? Was a little hacking really that bad?

“Mm I lack the facilities to properly prepare your flesh. I wouldn’t waste you that way.” Hughes’s expression might’ve been a smirk.

Then he pulled away and stood, walking around the tiny cell with the air of a king surveying his castle. “You’ll discover time moves differently with no natural light. You’ll sleep more than you ever imagined, and your dreams will feel more real than this cell. The emotions you once felt will slip away, replaced by a different sense of yourself.”

He seemed lost in thought for a moment, faraway. Then he looked back toward Elias. “Are you an introvert or an extrovert, Mr. Stuyvesant?”

Elias squirmed forward so he could more easily watch Hughes from his bottom bunk. Weirdly, he felt comforted that Hughes had said he wouldn’t waste Elias.

“Introvert, I guess. Being in juvie, I had to figure out how to deal with people around so much. Guess I’ve always become what I needed to be in the moment.”

“A chameleon then.” Hughes sounded like he approved. He gestured toward himself and said, “I am much the same. Please do honor my desire for quiet and solitude when I’m…in a mood, and I will attempt to make suitable conversation when you’re of a mind to.”

Unexpected by K.M. Neuhold: Exclusive Excerpt!

Exclusive Excerpt from Unexpected

by K.M. Neuhold

Maverick looks at Kyle, relief shining in his eyes. “Okay, yeah, let’s go home.”

I move my arm so it’s around Mav’s shoulder, and to my surprise, he holds his hand out toward Kyle. Kyle stares at the outstretched hand for several seconds before he finally grabs onto it. I watch with my heart in my throat as they lace their fingers together. A careful smile tilts the corners of Kyle’s lips, making him look even more beautiful.

Maverick tugs on his hand, pulling him closer, and I’m sure all three of us are holding our breath as he drags Kyle into his arms. With Maverick still tucked against me, I can see the surprise and excitement shining in Kyle’s eyes as he tilts his face up to meet Maverick’s eyes. His pink tongue darts out to wet his full, gorgeous lips. I could swear they’re moving in slow motion as Maverick angles his head, both of their eyes drifting closed, still not a single breath being drawn between the three of us, the moment heavy with the weight of anticipation. Even without my lips involved, it feels like I’m having my own first kiss.

Their mouths finally meet, and a muffled sound escapes Kyle’s throat; it sounds like it’s halfway between a moan and a whimper, going straight to my cock and making me hard as steel. Maverick leans into me, finding a way to include me in the moment they’re sharing. I appreciate it, but it’s unnecessary. This is their moment, and I’m more than happy to let them have it.

The kiss is chaste, their lips gently exploring each other, moving together in a dance they seem to be learning as they go. Kyle’s body sways closer to Maverick, his free hand landing on Mav’s chest.

When the kiss finally ends, I’m as breathless as they are, my heart thundering in my chest. Continue reading

Exclusive Excerpt from Rules to Obey

by Susan Hawke

Jeffy smiled shyly. “Okay… Daddy.”

After that, I pretty much floated into the kitchen. I took my time making a simple lunch of sandwiches. I cut his into four diagonal pieces and removed the crusts before putting them on the divided toddler plate I’d bought for today. I hadn’t been able to find Transformers, so I’d settled for robots. The other compartments got filled with orange segments and sliced, peeled cucumbers covered in a light vinaigrette. My own sandwich was paired with an almost boring side salad. I filled a matching robot sippy cup with apple juice and got the table set before calling him in.

“Jeffy, it’s time to wash your hands for lunch. You can finish coloring after we eat.”

He hesitated for a moment, chewing his lip as if he were deciding whether or not to obey. I never doubted him but still smiled proudly when he set his crayon down and dutifully came into the kitchen.

“Good boy. Come join me at the sink, please.” His cheeks flushed bright red as he came and stood beside me. I matter-of-factly took foaming hand soap and made a game out of washing his hands. When Jeffy leaned forward and blew a puff of suds off the back of his hand with a quiet giggle, I knew we were on the right path. I made quick work of rinsing and drying his hands before nodding toward the table. “Good job. Now let’s have some lunch. I forgot to ask what you like, so I hope this will work.”

Honorary Blogger Gail Z. Martin: Making the Supernatural Believable + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Making the Supernatural Believable

by Gail Z. Martin

Inheritance, which is part of my Deadly Curiosities series, has ghosts, curses, demons, witches, supernatural creatures and haunted objects. I love writing about spooky stuff, and I do my best to make the paranormal elements believable so that readers get an exciting thrill ride of a book.

For me, the first step in making the supernatural believable is to research the lore, urban legends and ghost stories of an area. My urban fantasy books are set in real cities, most of which have a long, reputedly haunted past. Those stories arise from an area’s history and the people who came to live there, so understanding the history of a place is also important.

My goal is to make the location of a book so much a part of the plot that the story couldn’t happen in the same way anywhere else. That requires research into the culture, and how the people who live there see themselves and their heritage. Of course, those elements wind back to the supernatural, because people tell stories about their ancestors, the people who settled the area before them, the rogues, scoundrels and criminals, the people most likely to have their spirits stay behind when their lives end.

Magic is always a part of my urban fantasy books, and to make magic believable, it has to have rules and come at a cost. People with magical abilities need to have limits, or they become super-powered and so there’s no suspense. Rules are important so that magic doesn’t just conveniently solve all problems. Also, since I draw from real-world belief systems around the practice of magic, I do my best to be faithful and respectful to those traditions and represent them and their practitioners accurately.

I research the urban legends and ghost stories of a place because those are rooted in the area’s unique history, the people who settled there, and the physical nature of the location. The real legends provide wonderful plot bunnies for ways to incorporate some of those old stories and elements into my new stories, so that the tale feels organic, arising from its location.

The other key element is consistency, which comes back to rules. If creatures act a certain way in one book, or magic has certain abilities or limits, then that has to remain consistent throughout unless you provide a very good reason. That also helps with believability, because the supernatural elements shouldn’t solve every problem easily so they don’t feel like a cheat to get the characters out of tight situations.

I love writing spooky stories and weaving in supernatural elements—and I’m thrilled that readers like to read about ghosts, magic and haunted places. For me, getting to research and write paranormal plots is the best job ever! Continue reading

Honorary Blogger Rob Browatzke: A Fluid State + Excerpt!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

A Fluid State

by Rob Browatzke

Hey Friends and Family!

Thanks for having me here to talk about “A Fluid State”. I’m particularly pleased with this one, and this guest post tells you why.

The idea for this book started off somewhere in SocialMediaLand. Someone was asking about books featuring gender-fluid kids with straight dads. That’s where this started. It was Patrick’s relationship with his son, Peter, that really inspired this book.  I looked around my own life and saw the huge number of drag queens in it, saw the huge influence of Drag Race in so much of what’s currently pop culture, and I did the math. If Peter was exploring his gender identity, even just as far as dress, he probably would discover Drag Race, and that would lead him to drag queens in his own town.

Enter Andrew, aka Ann Moore.

What would happen when Peter’s dad met that drag queen, I wondered. I’m sure you’ve all seen about Drag Queen StoryTimes at local libraries and the confusion, anger, and hate that they can breed online. I knew that wasn’t going to be Patrick, aside from the confusion. Of course he’d be a little confused. To find his eleven-year-old son suddenly dressing in skirts and blouses, not to mention having long-flowing hair? What if Patrick found that drag queen attractive before realizing she was a drag queen? What if that attraction didn’t fade when he learned the truth?

Like that, the story of a boy and his dad became this gay-for-you happy-ever-after slow-burn.

I’m not normally much of a plotter, and this wasn’t an exception. I knew it was becoming a romance so I knew that meant at least a happy for now ending, but it’s also my instinct to toss in a lot of grief and anguish and pain to get there. This book was having none of that. Every place I wanted to insert some agony, maybe homophobic comrades-in-arms or an ex-wife freaking out, every single place I tried to up the drama, Patrick and Andrew simply told me, nope. Not in this book, not in this world. We’re here to fall in love, and that’s scary enough without random tragedy intervening.

That’s not to say everything is easy for Patrick and Andrew. Love isn’t easy, at the best of times, and when you factor in a changing relationship between father and son, as well as this first ever same-sex attraction? That road is going to have bumps in it no matter what I do. I mean heck, I’m just the writer. At some point in every story, I lose whatever control I had; it just so happens in this one, I never really had much to begin with.

As for heat level? This is the sexiest story I’ve written yet. Oh sure, pick up almost any of my other books and there will be sex, and loads of it, but this one? Patrick and Andrew sizzle together, and I hope you feel their chemistry as strongly as I do!

Honorary Blogger Katey Hawthorne: The Soundtrack of Their Lives + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Soundtrack of Their Lives

by Katey Hawthorne

Thanks for having me, Blogger Girls! So glad to be here!

My latest novel, The Rise of Virginie, is about small town Appalachian folk with rock star dreams. They call their new band Virginie, partly in honor of their (and my!) home state, West Virginia, partly because Han, who comes up with the name, is a virgin and he thinks he’s being funny. I’ve written about musicians before—rock musicians in particular—in Riot Boy, the second Superpowered Love book, and part of the reason I love it is that music is such a big part of my life.

I don’t know if this is a fun fact or not, but both of my parents were music teachers before retirement, my mom taught me how to play the guitar, and my brother is an incredible singer. Family gatherings tended to have a lot of music involved, and my summers were spent doing community theater musicals. We’re those nerds, yes! Nowadays I mostly listen, but oh man, do I love to listen. And make playlists for every book I write, hell, sometimes every character I write, because that’s just how I roll. Here’s the one for The Rise of Virginie, and some exclusive liner notes! (Recommended listening: put it on shuffle!)

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPi8HvdSnGd9jmUk7ForMztAgmdIq_KD0&fbclid=IwAR0M7qv4KDaI_jIW0g_z-i359TU_lS9owzoeDPUoAUJ-EwDDfOpn2gPz0YE

+BRMC “Spread Your Love” – I always imagine this kind of sexy groove is exactly what Virginie gets going. Neither of the singers from this band sounds at all like I imagine Han, but musically, vintage BRMC or Bust.

+The Cure “Friday I’m in Love” – A tiny excerpt from one of Virginie’s early shows:

We’d debated how the crowd at the Paradise would do with the Cure, but ultimately decided fuck it, it was us, and we were doing it. Plus, Han could rock some Robert Smith-sans-accent. We were in the middle of a rollicking rendition of “Friday, I’m in Love” when I started to really feel the band’s chemistry that night. There was something in the way Han moved to it, the sway of his hips and the bounce of his head, that mesmerized me. My fingers moved like magic, and I fucking love that riff, man, so I was in the zone. The girls were flawless, really on their game, and for just a second, shit was golden.

And then, of course, everything goes to shit. But they had a moment!

+Arctic Monkeys “Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong But…” – This is the quintessential “we’re forming a band and we’re awesome, fuck your patronizing naysaying bullshit” song. One of the main characters, Stefan, definitely has that attitude, and so does their drummer, Megan. Han, the other MC … bless him, he tries.

+Lou Reed “Vicious” – Lou Reed gets flack in this book as not being the best to listen to when you’re going through some shit. But in his favor, he could also rock it out, and this song pretty much works on multiple levels for various characters in the book. Also its origin story…

Reed said it was Andy Warhol who provided fuel for the song. “He said, ‘Why don’t you write a song called ‘Vicious,'” Reed told Rolling Stone in 1989. “And I said, ‘What kind of vicious?’ ‘Oh, you know, vicious like I hit you with a flower.’ And I wrote it down literally. -Rolling Stone https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/vicious-78880/

+Blondie “One Way or Another” – I mean, who doesn’t love Blondie? This song is actually about stalking, which doesn’t happen in the book, but there’s plenty of creepy-ass betrayal. Plus, well, Debbie Harry was my spiritual inspiration for the character of Megan in some ways. Another tiny excerpt:

By the time I got off from the Watering Hole, Megan had margaritas ready. We drank most of a bottle of tequila, listened to a lot of Blondie, traded oral sex, and smoked two packs of cigarettes—the usual revelry.

Around four a.m., when we were chilling naked on her couch with half-dead margaritas and full ashtrays, I was relaxed enough to admit, “I really want to be in a band again.”

Megan made a face that seemed appropriate, since it transformed her into a wistful Debbie Harry. “I miss it so fucking much, Stef.”

Of course, Han and Stef write their own tunes almost from the moment they meet, so there’s plenty of that too. But music, like a story, isn’t created in a void. Inspiration from the best!
