Exclusive Excerpt from Yuletide Treasure

by Eliot Grayson

Tim had paused in his copying some minutes before, his pen set carefully to one side, and was regarding Sypeman surreptitiously — and a bit warily, for all the man looked like he couldn’t hurt a fly. Ever since he’d fled to his own desk like all the demons were after him, he’d been hunched over a heap of old rubbishy bits of foolscap covered in crabbed writing that made Tim’s eyes and brain hurt even from across the room.

The suspicion that Eben Sypeman might be mad as a March hare had crept up on him a bit, as he sat and watched.

It really always was the pretty ones that were a bit dicked in the nob. Story of Tim’s life. Odd as Sypeman was, he was well worth looking at: the prettiest blue eyes Tim’d ever seen, and a handsome face under his waving black hair, despite the frowning and scowling. He could stand to get a little sunshine, but if he smiled Tim might forget all about the muttering and shuffling of papers, and the way he’d looked like he wanted to throw Tim down the stairs. Not that he’d have managed it, even with Tim’s mangled leg, but the impulse had been there, Tim would swear to it.

Sypeman grasped one of the papers before him in both hands, shook it a little, and made a muffled sound somewhere between a groan and a cough.

Tim caught up his pen again, so as not to be caught out in his shirking. “Mr. Sypeman, are you all right?”

The man jolted upright and dropped the paper, then looked up and fixed Tim with those bright eyes. Too bright; Sypeman looked downright wild. “Why do you ask?”

Why indeed? If the fellow didn’t realize how strangely he was behaving, Tim wouldn’t be the one to tell him. He shrugged, and it looked like Sypeman’s gaze flickered down Tim’s body a bit as he did. Interesting. “You made a strange sound, sir. Sorry. Not quite a cough. I thought you might be choking.”

“I did?” Sypeman really did seem genuinely confused. Good gods, but what was in those bits of scrawled nonsense that could keep his attention so fixed?

Tim shrugged again. “You did, but I shouldn’t’ve interrupted. Sorry.”

“No, it’s all right,” Sypeman said. “Though I don’t know what I could have choked on, besides frustration.” Timothy’s eyebrows went up, and he wished he could see the papers more clearly from where he sat. It was two days to Yuletide. What could have Sypeman so worked up just before a holiday, when no one ever did anything important? “This ledger is rather dense,” Sypeman added lamely.

Tim stared for a moment. Sypeman really was mad. Either that, or he thought Tim was blind, or an idiot. Or, not to ignore any possibilities, he was hallucinating entirely and thought Tim was a talking horse, or a tree, or gods only knew what. That would at least explain why his eyes had gone as wide as saucers when he saw Tim on the stairs.

“You’re not looking at a ledger,” he said carefully.

“How would you know?” Sypeman snapped, his fingers twitching toward his pile of papers again.

Tim stood, slowly and a little painfully after staying in one position for too long, and took up his cane from where it leaned against his dad’s desk. Perhaps the wiser thing to do would’ve been to simply walk out the door and forget about those shillings. But over the half hour or so Tim had been watching, Sypeman had gone from miserable to looking downright ill. There was something wrong, be it madness or not, and he couldn’t leave Sypeman alone here. It wouldn’t be right.

So instead, he stiffly made his way across the small stretch of floor separating the desks, coming to a stop at the end of the desk rather than in front of it, just a foot from Sypeman’s chair. His shadow fell across the desk. Sypeman scooted his chair back a few inches and tipped his head back, frowning. Perhaps Tim shouldn’t have loomed quite so much, but too late now. Sypeman moved as if he meant to stand, and Tim went rigid. If he stood they’d be chest to chest, so better if he stayed put — but no, that put Sypeman’s plush lips just at the level of the front of Tim’s trousers, and gods, but that was worse.

Thank every deity Sypeman tipped his head back against the chair to look up into Tim’s face, because his cock wanted to rise in response to the view. Oh, it had been too long, far too long, since Tim touched another man.

“Mr. Sypeman.” Timothy sighed and shook his head, trying to find the words. A fascinating flush began to spread up from under Sypeman’s collar, tinting his cheeks peony-pink. “You’ve already looked through the ledgers. And clearly, whatever you wanted wasn’t in ’em. Now you’re grasping at straws, and those straws aren’t in a book, which is what a ledger is. Just in case you had any real doubts that I know what one is.”

“I — I don’t —”

“I’m not offended. And you don’t care if I am, in any case, so don’t go making excuses,” Tim said levelly. It wasn’t a lie; how could the ravings of a madman offend him, anyway? But what had set off Sypeman’s bout of insanity? The answer came to him after a moment. “Your partner, Mr. Marney, died last week.” Sypeman only nodded, his lips pressed tightly together. “So whatever you’re looking for, it’s something he would have known, I’m guessing. Something bad. Or something that you need to find out to keep something else bad from happening,” Timothy went on. Sypeman’s dropped jaw and frightened eyes told him he’d hit close enough to the truth. “I’m not much of a clerk, I know it. And you don’t know me. But I’m the only one here, and you’re clearly not getting anywhere on your own. You should tell me what’s got you in such a lather.”

Sypeman clearly hadn’t been expecting that. “I should? I mean, of course I shouldn’t!”

“Why not? What’ve you got to lose, Mr. Sypeman?” Tim found himself leaning forward a little, holding his breath, hoping more than was strictly sensible that Sypeman would just talk to him. He’d heard from his dad that Sypeman had few friends, didn’t go out much in society, and generally kept to himself. He was quite possibly just as lonely as Tim, who lived with a large and boisterous family and still felt, sometimes, that he was a fixed point just outside of it. It felt important, somehow, that he reach out to this man who so clearly needed a friend.

Honorary Blogger Eden Winters: The Creation of an Author + Excerpt!

The Creation of an Author

by Eden Winters

Many years ago my friend John said to me, “You’d never understand my world.”

This hurt me deeply, as I loved him dearly and wanted to understand the hardships he faced as a gay man, which launched a mission for me. How do I gain understanding? Being an avid reader, I immersed myself in the printed word in my quest for knowledge.

I stumbled upon my first gay romance novel, A Bit of Rough by Laura Baumbach, and fell in insta-love with the genre. One day while discussing a novel with a friend and fellow fan-fiction author, she said, “We could do this, you know” and challenged me to write a novel while she did the same.

As I was going through a hard time at the moment, I pretty much cut myself open and bled on the pages of The Telling, my very first novel, released ten years ago.

All of a sudden the stories in my soul took flight: the Diversion series, a narcotics crimes series based on actual cases in the pharmaceutical world; The Angel of Thirteenth Street and Fallen Angel, which tells of the struggles of youth aging out of foster care; flights of fancy such as Naked Tails, A Bear Walks into a Bar and Two Bears and a Baby (co-written with the above-mentioned friend, P.D. Singer), and many more. To date I’ve written twenty-three full-length novels, then returned to the love of my teenaged years, science fiction.

Six years ago I wrote The Sentinel for a campaign on Goodreads, which was well received. Readers wanted more. What sprang to mind was, not a continuation of Stone and Connell’s story, but a tale in which they are secondary characters, and we learn more about the sentient ships Stone mentioned.

Consorts of the Red King takes place in the same universe, with cybernetic soldiers, princes in disguise, and mercenaries who aren’t as bloodthirsty as they’d like others to believe. The name Van Orskey even occurred to me before the first word hit the page.

This book represents the latest chapter in my writing life. My journey to enlightenment has also continued, filled with PFLAG meetings, PRIDE parades, and a personal campaign to educate the masses on the importance of Spirit Day.

I’ve met many new friends along the way, opened myself to new experiences, and have grown exponentially as a person.

All because of love.  Continue reading

Honorary Blogger Jocelynn Drake: Why Vampires? + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Why Vampires?

by Jocelynn Drake

October always puts me in the mood for spooky stories and the paranormal. I love witches, warlocks, demons, shifters, and of course vampires.

I have always loved vampires, and it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the scary, rip-your-head-off vampires or the sexy, brooding vampires. Though, I will admit that my preference runs for the more violent and misunderstood vampires.

I love their magic and their myth. I love all the crazy variations and complex rules.

My very first published book was called Nightwalker and it focused on the adventures of a vampire named Mira and a vampire hunter named Danaus. Their world was dark and violent, where everyone was waiting to betray them and the only people they would depend on were supposed enemies.

When I first started writing about vampires I was entranced by the idea of humans suddenly having immense power and few consequences. How would it corrupt them? And what kind of person wouldn’t be corrupted, but see it as a means to a new kind of responsibility.

Now, many years after the conclusion of Mira and Danaus’s story in the Dark Days series, I’m back to vampires for a slightly different reason. With the Lords of Discord, I’m now looking at four brothers who had made a monumental decision to change their lives forever to protect a loved one. Is that sense of family and loyalty enough to hold them together?

And can love save them when everything starts to fall apart?

Another great reason to jump into a vampire novel is the great variation on this old monster. Are they dependent on blood? Can sunlight kill them? Can they eat food? Can they go into a church or temple? Did they really strike a deal with the devil?

Each new vampire novel brings a new spin on an old story.

With the Lords of Discord, I’ve rewritten the rules a little bit to give you a different kind of vampire that is both powerful and vulnerable.

And, of course, some magic.

Because I think we could all use a little magic in our lives.

Crossing the Line by Jeanne St. James: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Crossing the Line

by Jeanne St. James

Cross lifted his hand to knock on the motel room door, but as he did so, it swung open. A man stepped out, wearing a baseball cap low, his head down and his hands shoved deep into his pockets as he elbowed past Cross.

Cross had to take a step back so he wouldn’t be bowled over. As he watched the man jog down the stairs at the end of the second-floor landing, he heard, “What’re you doin’ here?”

His gaze swung back to the open doorway where Nash had his hand planted high on the corner edge of the door and was leaning into the door jamb, his shoulder pressed to the molding.

Nash wore no shirt, even though it was November. Without his belt, his jeans rode low on his narrow hips. His feet were bare, and his messy hair hung loose.

Cross turned again and watched the man who had rushed out of Nash’s room get into what he would consider a road hazard on four wheels and drive away.

“You shouldn’t be here,” came the low rumble.

Apparently.

“You don’t fuckin’ give up.”

Cross wished he could. Some days he’d wished he never saw Nash across the bar at The Cockpit. He’d never been like this with anyone before.

He needed his fucking head examined. No doubt about it.

“Why?”

Cross met Nash’s hazel eyes and told the truth. “I wish I knew, then I’d be able to give you an answer.” He jerked his head toward the now-empty parking spot Nash’s “friend” had vacated. “You fuck him?”

Nash ignored the question, turned on his heels and went deeper into the motel room but left the door open. Cross took that as an invitation.

After stepping inside, he closed and locked the door. He watched Nash’s lean muscles ripple as he tugged an Ocean City Bike Week hoodie over his head and slide his bare feet into a pair of old sneakers, not bothering to lace them up.

He grabbed something off the small desk and kept walking to a sliding glass door on the other side of the room. Then he disappeared outside.

It took a few seconds for Cross to unstick his feet. When he did, he stepped out onto the small balcony where the air felt a little warmer than normal for fall since that side of the motel room was engulfed in the afternoon sun. That motel room was also located in Virginia where it was a little warmer than back home in Pennsylvania.

Nash probably thought Cross was desperate since he tracked him down two states away.

But it hadn’t been hard to find him. All Cross had to do was look online for Dirty Deeds’ tour dates. It also wasn’t hard to locate the motel once he contacted the band’s manager and asked where Nash was staying, saying he needed the info for a police matter.

Once again, the man who now was settled into a lounge chair made him lie.

That Time I… Survived My Teens by Craig Barker: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from That Time I… Survived My Teens

by Craig Barker

My entire academical path boils down to whether or not someone called me a faggot in the classroom. If they did, I failed. If they didn’t, I succeeded.

This really hit home with me when I was placed into the top math class in high school—a position I didn’t get to keep for long. You see, sat right next to me in that class was Steven (what ever happened to bullies being dumb?). and he quickly became the class clown who everyone loved, including the teacher.

Speaking of the teacher—he was an asshole. He loved to ask questions, gaze upon the raised hands, then pick the one person who didn’t hold it up.

That person was me. It was always me.

And it wasn’t that I didn’t know the answers, but I could always see Steven’s smug grin out of the corner of my eye; I could always hear the stifled laughter from the girls behind me, mocking me for my nervous stutter and uncomfortable demeanor.

If anxiety is learned, then that is what I learned from my math class. I even went so far as to ask my teacher not to pick me out of the crowd anymore because it made me feel uncomfortable, and the next lesson we had together he made sure to pick me for every question—to the point it became a running gag, and everyone laughed as I sat in silence, wanting to be anywhere but there.

By the time school was over, I had a D in math (and I don’t mean the fun kind). My love for the subject died in that room, and it never resurfaced again.

Exclusive Excerpt from Nuts

by SE Jakes

Preston felt like he’d won a small victory from the stubborn man. “I want to check out security at the club, and I’ll have your back while I’m figuring things out.” “Were you thinking of doing something else?”

Preston shrugged. “I don’t think

they’re going to let me out—not fully, anyway.” He was too well trained, had cost the military far too much money to simply be allowed to walk away from his Green Beret days.

“So what—are you officially part of the National Guard?”

“Something like that. They call and I jump.”

“With no notice.” Jagger sounded resigned but not surprised.

“I’ll make sure you’re covered.”

“That’s not…dammit, Preston.” Jagger hit the steering wheel with his palm. “It didn’t have to be like this. It never had to be like this. You didn’t have to run to enlist in the first place.”

“I wasn’t running, Jagger. I needed to fucking establish myself. Or I really would’ve been what my family called me.”

“Jagger’s whore?” he bit out. “You refused to let anyone pay your way. Don’t they know that?”

“It didn’t matter. They knew you’d offered to take care of me—you and your family. They didn’t understand it then, and now—”

“This isn’t the same.”

“Feels like it can be.”

“Dammit, you know what k

ind of security I need. And you’re in the unique position of already being trusted to provide it.”

Preston pressed the heels of his palms to his eyes. “I told you I’d consider it. That I’d help you in the meantime. Can that be enough for now? I’m working on two hours of sleep here.”

“Yeah,” Jagger said roughly. “It’s always enough when you’re here.”

Precariously Mated by Jessamyn Kingley: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Precariously Mated

by Jessamyn Kingley

Niko was flush with success after spending nearly an hour in the air. His dragon provided him with a surge of confidence and strength. They were feelings Niko planned to hold on to even while outside his dragon form. Perhaps his beast could help him learn to restrict the hold his OCD had on his life. As he’d told Costas, he would always have it as part of him, but he was ready to fight for more control. He was no longer a timid boy, and thanks to the Draconises, he had choices. Like his dragon spreading his wings again, Niko was finding that when he dug inside himself, he had more power than he could’ve imagined. It was an intoxicating realization, and Niko was prepared to have more say when combating the voice in his head that demanded appeasement.

The entire royal family was set to leave D’Vaire soon with the weekend winding down but somehow, he found himself sitting in Aleksander’s office with the High King; his younger brother, Duke Argent Worthington; and of course Niko’s best friend, Costas, who he stayed close to whenever possible.

The mood was light until Worth pinned Niko with a penetrating look. He was growing more used to making eye contact at least briefly, but he couldn’t hold it long. For him, he was willing to accept that it was simply his preference and not a weakness. The only exception he’d found was Costas, who inspired him to go beyond the limits he’d long ago accepted. Niko’s gaze hit his lap as Worth finally spoke. “You know, Niko, I was confined for a century by our shit of a father, but I was fortunate to have a regular guest stop by and spend time with me. And as technology advanced, I was granted access to both television and the Internet, but I understand loneliness. If you find you need a more interesting friend than Costas here, I hope you’ll give me a call.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, thank you.” Niko was honored by the request and that so many people were willing to make time for him.

“Hey, I’m interesting,” Costas countered as he bumped his shoulder gently against Niko’s.

“Certainly not as interesting as I, but we do have a thing in common. Our mates are still out there, and we both want them. We aren’t crazy like my brother over here who doesn’t even want his.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t want one. I just said not right now,” Aleksander interjected.

“Fate didn’t give me my other half yet, but at least I got a great new best friend and family member,” Costas remarked.

Warmth seeped into Niko at his words, and he wondered how he’d managed without someone like Costas in his life. The past nearly two months had changed him profoundly. It was Costas’s kindness and understanding that steadied Niko as he pushed back against all that had constrained him since he was young. He was finding his own strength, and it was nice to have someone cheering him on.

The desire to take advantage of this opportunity to start fresh had been inside him from the moment he joined the Council, but in Niko’s mind it wouldn’t be as successful in such a short amount of time without having someone believe in him the way Costas did. His ability to do no more than listen allowed Niko to admit that he wasn’t always the problem in his past relationships. It wasn’t his fault he hadn’t connected more strongly to those that had surrounded him; they simply had shared no common ground despite two of them being picked for him by Fate.

An ongoing conversation in his mind was the realization that Fate might not be a malicious goddess but one that was not as perfect as others believed. Niko was growing to believe that perhaps she’d just erred with him. He didn’t know if it was because she’d not taken the time to study him to pick the right pairing, if she had simply not cared for him like all the rest, or if there were limits to her abilities in knowing how two or more people would benefit each other.

“I still say I would be a far more interesting friend to Niko,” Worth stated.

“Perhaps someday I’ll invite you to hang out on the roof deck with Costas and me,” Niko offered.

“Hey, the roof is invitation only,” Costas refuted.

Niko glanced up at the annoyed duke. “I just gave him one.”

Costas leaned in and his expression might be irritated, but his dark eyes were full of humor. “It requires one from both of us.”

“Costas, stop being a little bitch. You know I’m loads of fun. Inviting me up to your fancy roof deck isn’t going to ruin your life,” Worth teased while Niko enjoyed staring at the handsome face of the Royal Duke.

“Give it up, you aren’t ever going to leave this house anyway,” Aleksander argued.

“You don’t ever leave either,” Worth shot back.

“I have everything I need here.”

Costas’s mouth turned up in a smile Niko would have to define as sexy. He’d never dared think that of another, but the thought was even louder than the ones that demanded he obey rituals. “See how popular you are? You’re sowing discord between the High King and the Duke Argent.”

Niko grinned back at him. “I think it might be sibling rivalry.”

“Why does everyone automatically assume Aleksander and I are related by blood just because we consider each other family?”

Turning to Worth, Niko’s eyebrows pulled together in a scowl. “You can’t be serious. You look more like each other than Chrysander and Damianos, and they are twins.”

“Next question. Why would you think a sensible, logical argument would ever work here at D’Vaire?”

“Because Dra’Kaedan’s the only one here who is crazy…and maybe you,” Aleksander retorted.

“Funny, that’s what he says about you,” Worth shot back.

Exclusive Excerpt from Rules to Break

by Susan Hawke

I got back right as my purchases were being delivered by the personal shopping service. I gratefully gave the driver a fat tip after he carried everything inside for me. After I waved him away, I closed the door and got to work.

I’d just finished fluffing the final pillow when I heard the door open. I turned and held my arms out wide. “Ta-da! What do you think? Does it look better in here, or what?”

Daddy Bryan closed the door with his foot and dropped his keys on the table by the door. His jaw worked from side to side as he looked around the room with a stunned expression. He took a few steps, then paused to look some more. He held up a finger as if to tell me to wait, then disappeared down the hallway to inspect the rest of his house. I waited patiently until he came back into the room. He paused and scrubbed both hands over his face before taking a deep breath and finally speaking.

“Preston, I think you may have misinterpreted my instructions today. When I asked you to spiffy up the place, I was referring to running the vacuum and doing a little dusting. Not redecorating my house. Jesus, how much money did you spend? Wait, don’t answer that. I don’t need to know because obviously it’s all going back.”

I lifted my chin and squared my shoulders, prepared to do battle if need be. “Sorry, but that’s a big no can do, Daddy. I’m proud to tell you that not only did I get everything I purchased for your house on clearance, I was also able to use my professional discount. As for vacuuming and dusting, you didn’t specify, so I was free to determine for myself what you’d meant. Obviously, you wouldn’t want me to waste my valuable skills on menial tasks, or so I assumed.”

Daddy Bryan quirked a brow, the left side of his mouth curving up as if he were fighting the urge to grin. “Professional discount and valuable skills, huh? And this from a guy who doesn’t work? Forgive me if I’m confused.”

I waved a hand as if it were no big deal, because it really wasn’t. “Daddy, just because I’m not currently working doesn’t mean I don’t have qualifications. I will have you know that I graduated in the top of my class at the Rhode Island School of Design. I haven’t used my BFA degree, but it’s there if I want to. There just hasn’t been much point when I don’t really need to work. I guess I’m still finding myself, but Victor assures me that I’ll get there someday. I only graduated a year and a half ago. But I am a member of more than one designers organization and I do get trade discounts because of them.”
