Whiteout Conditions by Dara Nelson: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Whiteout Conditions

by Dara Nelson, Writing as Kendel Duncan

Vaughn stood with Caysun next to the huge black Harley and he stared, and stared.  Yeah, he could see why he refused to leave it….or let anyone else drive it.  That had him frowning because all he could picture was how damn sexy Cay would look riding it.

Cay?  Now he was using nicknames? Well, thinking them anyways.

He huffed as he shook his head.  “Lend me your cuffs, would ya, Preston?”

“Why?”

“You’re going to cuff my hands around loverboy here, that way if he tries anything to get me off the bike, he’s going with me.”

Without looking over, Caysun smirked and said, “Honey, I’m not getting you off my bike but I definitely may want to get you off on my bike.”

Vaughn rolled his eyes as Brent snorted and JD laughed but truth be told, he liked the stuff that was falling from Caysun’s mouth.  It challenged him.

It made him want to shut it – with his hand…..or better yet, his dick.

Said dick twitched behind his zipper.  He couldn’t climb onto the back of Caysun’s bike with a hard-on.  He’d never hear the end of it.

“Just give me your goddamn hands, Rourke,” he said with a slight growl as he spun Caysun around.

As he unlocked the cuffs, Caysun leaned closer, too close, and put his lips to Vaughn’s ear, “I can smell your hard-on, Deputy,” he whispered.

Vaughn glared at him, “What are you, a fucking vampire?”

Caysun grinned, “If you want me to be, I’ll be a vampire.  For you, I can be anything you want, Deputy Kepler.”

A shiver rushed down Vaughn’s spine.

Motherfucking hell.  This man not only pushed all of Vaughn’s buttons, he pushed buttons that Vaughn didn’t even know he had.

“Just get on the damn bike, Cay.”

Caysun hummed, “Mmmm, nicknames.  I like it,” he said as he slowly slid his keys from the front pocket of his jeans and then threw his leg over the bike.

Vaughn swore he could smell the sweet scent of the leather chaps and vest that he was certain that Caysun wore on long rides.

Okay….now he was smelling phantom shit.  What the fuck was happening here?

He shook his head to clear it then climbed onto the bike behind Caysun.  He tried to keep his dick from making contact with Caysun’s ass but with the way the seats were designed to slide the passenger forward, that feat was impossible.  He had to bite back the groan that wanted to come out when his dick settled into the warmth of Caysun as if they were made to be together, as if they were born for each other.

They fit together perfectly, a fact that Vaughn tried, unsuccessfully, to push to the back of his mind

Okay, now even his thoughts were getting sappy.  He was clearly losing his fucking mind.  Probably because it’d been so long since he dicked someone out….or got dicked out.

He snorted at his own thoughts.

“Something funny, Deputy?” Caysun said from in front of him.

Vaughn frowned, “No, nothing,” he mumbled.

“Well then, wrap your arms around me…..tight.”

Vaughn sighed as he put his arms around Caysun’s waist, trying to leave space between his body and Cay’s.  But then Caysun grabbed his wrists and pulled until Vaughn’s chest thumped again against Caysun’s back.

“Tight, Deputy Kepler.  Wouldn’t want you to risk falling.”

Again, Vaughn squeezed his eyes shut as JD clicked his cuffs in place while Caysun’s words slithered over him.

If he was truly honest with himself, he might be able to admit that he was already falling………

Honorary Blogger Miranda Turner: Genesis of My Story + Excerpt!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Genesis of My Story

by Miranda Turner

Thank you for allowing me to stop by today and share a little something about how my book came to be. My debut novel is in the urban fantasy genre, and as I enjoy sweeping story arcs, it is the first in a planned five book series following the same two main characters. There is a romantic subplot, but romance is not the main focus. Gabriel and Evander have a lot to work through before they’re ready for a HEA.

One day about five years ago, I was sitting around when a few sentences popped into my head that I felt compelled to write down. That one line later became the jumping off point for what is now a series following the same two main characters and their team of immortal warriors who will have their own spinoff series. But back then, I only had a line.

Gabriel woke to an angel beside his bed. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his dream man. It never was.”

Fast forward three years and I was going through some huge life changes when Gabriel popped into my head with his smart mouth and swagger. The line above originally had no names and even different pronouns. I’d never done anything with it. A story for it had never come to me like it had with some of my other small pieces of writing. But, as I do when a character or other idea pops into my head, I opened my work in progress folder and my ideas document. That line was at the top, and Gabriel grabbed on to it and told me it was his.

I immediately began writing and hit about the 15K mark before those huge life changes started affecting me too deeply to continue. I put it aside with all my other partially finished stories and concentrated on better establishing my editing business to be able to support myself and my children. A few months later, I moved myself and my children across the country to be closer to my family and live in the area I grew up in.

The first year we were here was mostly spent adjusting to our new normal, but the kids settled in quickly, and we were soon happily living our lives. This new, calmer existence allowed Gabriel to come back to the forefront of my mind, and he was shouting…loudly. Reading back through what I’d already written, I realized that, through all my editing work, I’d improved my own writing too. So I started over, only keeping the original starting line and finessing it a little.

From a single line and a single character, an entire world sprang into existence in my head. A world filled with angels, demons, immortal warriors, secret missions, gods and goddesses, and more. This world also has limits, and most people aren’t what they seem. There is prejudice, unfounded hatred, and all the human fallibilities packaged in the bodies of immortal and/or supernatural beings. While they have power, they don’t have perfection, and in my very biased opinion, that’s what makes them so interesting. I couldn’t stop writing their story, and for the first time in my life, I reached those all-important words. The End.

Release Blitz: Ta Weezo’s Blues by Layla Dorine + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Ta Weezo’s Blues by Layla Dorine

Sabre never had any intentions of becoming the teacher’s pet. In fact, most of his school years have been spent trying to avoid attention. The scar that mars his cheek has made him wary of strangers, their questions and prying eyes leave him feeling exposed in ways he’s uncomfortable with. Accustomed to blending in, he lurks around the shadows in the back of classrooms, turning in exemplary work but rarely taking part in discussions.

Professor Locklear’s Native lit class is different though. Sabre’s interest in the subject matter, coupled with a dedicated scholar’s need to turn in the best work possible, leads him to seek out a more advanced reading list, much to the delight of Professor Locklear. When he comes across Sabre reading material beyond even the advanced list, Professor Locklear invites on a fieldtrip to a nearby village. Along the way he learns more than just the knowledge contained in the books. He learns about trust and discovers that there are others out there just like him— shapeshifters.

What he believed was an individual anomaly turns out to be something beyond legend and lore, a whole different culture he’d never known existed. The only way he can move forward is to let his shields down long enough to trust the man whose conversations he’s come to enjoy, but to do that, he’ll have to stop distancing himself from everyone.

Everything had to be perfect.

Rook knew life, as a whole, was rarely adequate much less perfect but within its thread of events lay minute sparkling moments where perfection occurred in a blink of an eye. A glance the wrong way and that moment was lost. The key to life was to string more than a few of those diamond pristine nano seconds until a longer, Nirvana-inspired experience was wrought.

That’s what he was hoping for.

If only he could get the damned Christmas tree to stand up.

“It doesn’t have to be perfect, cuervo. Sometimes—” Dante must have felt the heat in Rook’s withering, baleful look because he closed his mouth before finishing his sentence.

“It’s got to be perfect. It’s our first Christmas, right? You know that, yeah?” He paced, dropping back a few feet to glare at the tree, willing it to straighten itself. “What the hell was I thinking getting an eight foot tree? What the fuck do I know about Christmas?”

“Rook…” Dante drawled, catching his attention.

What?

“Breathe.” He walked over to the tree to grab its — Rook didn’t even know what to call that part of the tree; possibly its neck — and shook it a few times before tapping it back down on the floor. The tree literally sighed and gave up its tilt, anchoring itself into the stand Rook battled with a few minutes before. “There. And listen to me, nothing has to be perfect. So long as you and I are together, everything can go to Hell and we’ll be fine.”

They were as opposite as any two people could be; a badge-to-the-bone LAPD detective and a former cat burglar who’d figured he’d pushed his luck as far as it could go and had gone straight because he known it was only a matter of time before he’d be caught. Despite Dante’s parents kicking him off the family tree when he came out to them, he’d experienced a happy childhood and forged a strong relationship with his maternal uncle, Manny, a former drag queen and Rook’s current shop manager. Rook’s childhood was much different. He’d been dragged up in the middle of a rotating cycle of carnies and conmen while his mother worked her way through the circuit. Beanie had been a woman of loose morals and even looser ethics but she’d at least left Rook alone for the most part.

Although why she’d left her richer-than-God family to slum under the Big Top was a mystery no one seemed to have an answer for. Yes, her father Archibald was an asshole and Rook butted heads with the old man plenty of times since Archie reached out to him but they had their own rhythm… and if Rook didn’t look too hard at the old man, he didn’t see his own faults mirrored right back at him.

Dante was a different story. So far the detective had tried to pin him for burglary, fucked him, arrest him for murder, help prove Rook was innocent and eventually fall in love with him.

Rook in return did the only sensible thing any man could do; he fell in love with the serious-minded, handsome Hispanic detective right back.

It was just that Christmas was turning into a bitch and a half and Rook didn’t have a clue on how to stop it from getting worse.

“Come help me get the ornaments up on the tree.” Dante began opening the boxes they’d brought out from Rook’s storage area from his inventory warehouse. “And where’d you get all this stuff? Thought you said this was your first tree.”

“Kind of, yeah.” He sat down on the couch, reaching to drag one of the boxes closer. “Mostly this is from estate sales. Anything I found that was December holiday related, I stuck into storage. Figured eventually I’d want to do this whole Christmas thing some day so I saved shit.”

The look Dante gave him was one Rook couldn’t decipher. He’d seen it before and despite its infrequent appearance, he hadn’t quite figured it out. On some level, it disturbed him that Dante had a secret expression Rook couldn’t crack, especially since he’d pretty much lived on his wits and ability to read people for years before he’d hooked up with a law-abiding lifestyle but asking seemed… treacherous so he kept silent, hoping one day to get a clue.

It wasn’t forthcoming any more now than it was the last twenty or so times Dante’s face looked that way.

“So let me get this straight,” Dante murmured, leaving the boxes alone to crouch down in front of Rook. While it was nice not to crane his head back to look at his lover, Dante’s gentle voice set off a wave of alarms in Rook’s brain. “You’ve been saving dead people’s holiday stuff for years now? Just in case you might get a tree?”

“Well, yeah. I mean, there’s memories there in those things. I don’t have memories. Well, not good ones. Not of Christmas. Or kind of anything Beanie wasn’t exactly the cookies waiting for me after school kind of mom.” Having Dante so close was distracting. Much more distracting than simply having a hot guy practically kneeling in front of him. “It’s hard to explain.”

“I know. And I’m trying to understand,” Dante murmured, resting his hand on Rook’s knee. “And this isn’t going to sound good but I don’t know how else to put it. It’s kind of like you’re gathering up leftover memories.”

“Babe, that’s what I do for a living. That’s all I ever do. There’s threads that we can’t see connecting us to stuff in the past and I collect those things so other people can have them again.” Rook leaned his head back, staring up at the ceiling because he didn’t trust himself to speak while staring into Dante’s soulful honey-brown eyes. “Sometimes it’s the little things like a toy they got in a cereal box because they don’t make that kind of cereal anymore and it was a treat their mom would only buy once in a while. And maybe their mom’s dead now that’s something that brings her back. Or it’s a baseball signed by some player a little girl had a crush on when she was nine but see, he really wasn’t famous but she met him once and he was nice to her. And it could’ve been a day she really needed somebody to be nice to her.

“That’s kind of why I keep all of this stuff because a lot of it old and someone had enough of their lives wrapped into this shit that it meant something. And I’m never going to know what those stories are but I can imagine,” he said, his voice growing hoarse for some reason. “Everything with Beanie was never real, never permanent. There wasn’t anything we did every year to hold us together. Fuck, sometimes we have to ditch everything we owned because we were either one step ahead of the law or running from someone she stole from. And I guess I feel like if I toss any of this away, I’m throwing away these people who see the plate on Christmas Eve to wrap things for their kids or lit a candle for over a week to commemorate them not running out of oil long ago. I don’t know. I just feel like whenever I find this stuff in what I buy, I should hold onto it. And maybe pick through all the boxes and find stuff I like so I can continue their memories.”

“But you could have had trees before this,” Dante reminded him gently. “You didn’t have to keep this stuff in storage. You could have —”

“I never wanted to build something with someone before you,” Rook whispered, dropping his head down and cupping Dante’s strong jaw in his hands. “I probably will donate or do something with a lot of it but I wanted to have someone with me when I started looking at other people’s stories. Or at least began imagining where something had been or why it was important. Everything I’ve had in my life has been leftovers. Or at least when I was growing up they were. There was never anything new and it was always a struggle but I knew one day I would find someone I loved and they would give me their childhood to share, their heart to hold onto. So I guess, you’re that guy. You’re the one I want to dig through boxes with and make up stories about why there’s a one eyed reindeer made out of pipe cleaner tucked in with expensive crystal ornaments.”

“Let me guess, you’ll be keeping the reindeer,” Dante said, chuckling.

“Yeah, probably.” Rook grinned at Dante’s deep rolling laugh then stole a kiss the smile could leave Dante’s lips. “No matter what’s in those boxes or whatever we end up putting on the tree, you are always going to be the one who lights up my Christmas and warms my heart. I don’t give a shit about the crystal or even if we found stacks of gold coins in those boxes. Nothing’s going to be as important to me as you. So, let’s dig through this crap and maybe go out and buy some pipe cleaners. I think it’s time we make our own one eyed reindeer so we have something to hang on our tree every year.”

Kink Aware by Morticia Knight: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Kink Aware

by Morticia Knight

No longer angry but embarrassed, Ray made his way to the breakroom. When he entered, he saw that Cruella had a glass of carrot juice in front of them. Ray assumed it had protein powder in it, which was part of their new effort to get more nutrition.

“Hey. Is it okay if I sit down?” He wasn’t sure if he was about to be kicked out after a good dressing down.

Cruella gestured to the chair across from them. “Please.”

Ray gingerly took a seat then folded his hands and placed them on the table, waiting for a cue from Cruella.

Cruella took a sip of their drink then locked eyes with him. “So, I’ve had a moment to consider what just happened, and why I got so upset. The other night when you grabbed and moved me so I wasn’t facing Tucker anymore, I reacted to being manhandled. But it’s more than that.” They reached across the table and laid their hand across his clutched ones. “Baby, I understand the part where you want to protect me, I do. But I went through a huge battle to wrench my life back from Tucker, and that’s an accomplishment I’m incredibly proud of. Not you or anyone else gets to decide how I handle that going forward. That’s my battle, my challenge, if he should continue to appear in my life for whatever inane reason he might have.”

Cruella let him go then sat back. “Hon, you’ll never fully grasp what my relationship with Tucker did to me, how it affected who I am. How he kept watch over me night and day, dictated how I ate, who I saw, what I wore, told me who I was or wasn’t allowed to be. But that’s okay. I escaped his tyranny and I love me now. And I want you to be a part of my new life—however, that can’t happen if you keep trying to make my decisions and control my world for me. Even if those decisions are done from the kindness of your sweet, caring heart, I can’t have that anymore. Discussions are welcome, input encouraged, but conclusions are up to me.”

Shit. He hadn’t seen Cruella’s life with Tucker through their lens, only his own. “I can’t even begin to tell you how sorry I am. I never took the time to consider any of that. And I don’t view you as incapable, I really don’t.” He winced as he struggled to find the words to get his feelings across. “When I look back to a year ago, when you were first coming here and I’d see the bruises…” He swallowed past a lump in his throat. “I never said anything. I mean, yeah, the perfunctory ‘how are you’, but I never delved deeper.” He lifted his gaze. “I’m sorry I didn’t try to help you then when you really needed it.”

Cruella rose from the chair then came around the rectangular table to take a seat next to him. They wrapped their arms around him and he clutched them back, burying his face in their hair as a few pesky tears sneaked their way out.

“Shh, baby. It’s okay. I was quite skilled at hiding and pretending.” Cruella rubbed his back in soft circles. “I never expected anyone to come in and save me. I knew I’d fucked up.” They drew back then put two fingers under Ray’s chin, encouraging him to meet their gaze. “The relationship we’re building is something I’m very excited about. I’m learning so many things about myself I never knew existed and I’m sensing you’ll be by my side as I learn even more.” Cruella brushed his hair back. “Which brings me to something I’ve been wanting to seriously discuss with you.” The corner of their mouth quirked in a smile. “This wasn’t where I’d envisioned such a conversation taking place, but sometimes we can’t time things perfectly.”

Ray took a chance and gathered their hands in his own. “Sure, whatever you want.”

Cruella chuckled. “Off to a good start.”

Ray tilted his head. “How do you mean?”

“We’ve been playing around with domination, the bondage and so on.” Cruella traced the tip of one finger down the side of his face then along his jaw. “And I know how much you enjoy being my good boy.”

Heat rose under Ray’s skin. “Yeah. A lot.”

Cruella broke into a wide smile. “Then what do you think about making a more formal arrangement with me as your Top?”
