A Blogger Girl Q&A with Kol Anderson + Giveaway!

JustJen: I am very excited to have the opportunity to share with everyone a little glimpse into the masterful wordsmithing mind of my good friend, Mr. Kol Anderson.   I’m so happy to have you with us today and want to thank you for sharing a little bit of yourself with us all.

The Inner Workings of a Mastermind

First, I have to ask about Prisoner

How has Aaron’s journey and its effect on your readers impacted your life?

Well, I went from thinking I could never be a writer to thinking maybe I can still hard and get better at it. Sometimes all of it feels unreal. The things people say sometimes, like how the characters touched them or how it affected them, it makes me feel like I’m finally being understood.

What did you expect the reception of Broken Season 1 to be?

Nothing? Lol Prisoner still sells! Still pretty high on the charts and unbelievable.

What can we expect for Carter in Episode 4?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you.

(Just kidding. I’d probably just tie you up and make you Vincent’s next victim.)

Who is the Prisoner character that has had the biggest impact on you?

I f***ing love that bastard.

What has the impact of Prisoner on your fans’ lives meant for you?

The world. Truly.

If I’m still writing it is because of them.

Now, a little about A Perfect Place

Did you know how A Perfect Place was going to end when you started writing it?

I usually know the ending when I start a story. I even write them down. Sometimes I write alternate endings pick one when I’m at that point according to feel. Perfect Place, yes. I knew where it was going to end.

Was it difficult for you to get into the mindsets of younger Lee and Jackson in A Perfect Place?

Actually no. That book came to me so easily. It just kind of flowed, especially the younger boys parts and their connection with the older age parts.

What was your overall goal, or theme for writing A Perfect Place?

I never have like a whole take over the world type plan for any book. I just pretty much write what I feel like writing. I wanted a story that hadn’t been written before, something that showed two people growing together and how we feel life changes people but somehow everything is still the same. I wanted to show that.

Another motivation, was that some people were coming up to me and telling me I only sell because I write sex in my books. Guess I just wanted to prove to myself that wasn’t the case.

How do you go about building the setting in your stories? Such as in A Perfect Place where it is so vivid – do you see the setting before you start writing the story, or build your world as you go along?

Well the setting in Perfect Place for sure the setting was a character in itself that’s how it was always supposed to be, like an evil villain for Liam and a home for Jax. Other times I build the world as I go.

Now for some General nosy questions – touting other works 😉

Do you draw from your own life when depicting your characters’ experiences?

Absolutely. Sometimes I see a person in real life for five minutes and I end up speculating about how he or she might react in a situation and that’s how they end up becoming characters.

It’s an impossible question to ask any author, but if you had to choose any one of your characters to spend a weekend with?

Is it wrong to say Vincent? Lol but seriously though… *thinks hard* yep.

Still Vincent. Crap.

Tell us about an exciting recent release (The Crying Game maybe?)

I am very proud of The Crying Game these days! It’s kind of endearing in a twisted sort of way lol and I hope people will take it for a love story instead of a twisted tale.

What is something that absolutely no one knows about you? (that everyone will know now :D)

Okay, damn. Let me think.

For a long time I thought Aristotle was just the name of our neighbor’s cat. I couldn’t understand why all the grown ups were making such a big fuss about it.

Oh yeah and I totally have a thing for souvenirs. I’ve kept every tooth from every body I have ever buried in an acid bath.

What is the strangest fan mail you’ve received from a reader to date?

I give people mindfucks in general so the fan mail is all pretty ahem ‘interesting.’ But once a guy sent me a shot of his you-know-what. Told me he wanted me to lick his ‘giant’ (debatable) dick so he could piss on my face. That comes under strange, right?

It’s a difficult question to ask any writer, but if you had to explain your writing process in three sentences.

Write. Purge. Repeat.

GRL Blog Tour: Cat Grant – GRL Years + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

GRL Years

by Cat Grant

Is this really GRL’s fourth year? I remember the very first GRL in New Orleans in 2011. I’d never been to NOLA before, but despite the kind of heat and humidity I’m not used to, I fell in love with the city.

Every year GRL’s been in a different city I’ve never visited before. Albuquerque was a lot of fun. So was Atlanta. And now, Chicago, which I’ve only ever passed through on my way to another city.

GRL’s become a yearly mile marker for me. Another year as a published author, another (however many) new books. GRL 2011 was the first time anybody actually recognized me. I remember walking into the opening event in that huge ballroom. I was exhausted and  hungry from traveling all day, so I headed straight for the food table – until one very sweet reader spied my badge and shrieked, “OH MY GOD, IT’S CAT GRANT!!!”

I picked myself off the floor, signed her book and stood talking to her for about ten minutes while my stomach slowly consumed itself. But you know what? I didn’t even care. In my mind, I was going, “These are my people! No more getting shunted aside, treated like a red-headed stepchild like at RT or RWA. GRL’s a place where authors who write what I write are treated like rock stars.”

Is it any wonder I look forward to it every year?

Honorary Blogger Chris T. Kat: How To Come Up With a Topic – Excerpt + Giveaway!

How To Come Up With a Topic

by Chris T. Kat

Hello, I’m Chris T. Kat, visiting the lovely Blogger Girls again. Thank you very much for the opportunity to be a guest on your blog. eXtasy books published my new release, Unicorn Rescue, on August 15th.

Doing a blog tour to promote a new release is standard procedure for most authors. I admit when I started about two and a half years ago, I didn’t do a blog tour because I had no clue how the whole promotion business worked. Well, I haven’t found the holy grail of promotion, but at least I know more now. I’ve had my share of blog tours, with some successful ones and some, um, not so successful ones. So, as I sat down to write a guest post for Unicorn Rescue, I stared at the screen, wondering what the topic should be.

I’ve written a lot of guest posts in the last years and I don’t like to repeat myself (not much anyway ^_^). Now what did I do, when nothing came to mind?

  1. Checked the list I made with possible guest post topics. Blergh! So boring! Moving on.
  2. Pulled up the documents I received during various blog tours with suggested blog topics. Playlist? Hmm, I don’t remember which songs I listened to when I wrote Unicorn Rescue. Deleted Scenes? I don’t have even one. Things that inspire me? Since I can be inspired by a peg, that could get out of hand. So I moved on again.
  3. Browse the internet for suggestions. First five pages in Google search brought up all kinds of documents and blog posts. Unfortunately, I already had all these documents saved on my computer. Obviously, I wasn’t doing this search for the first time… Then, hooray! Found a new list but, yes, you’ve guessed right. The topics weren’t for me. Talk about how you acquired an agent? Haha. Me and an agent—that sounded laughable. I could’ve talked about how I became a bestselling author, and how I managed to sell thousands of copies in a week. Right. There’s just a gap in that logic—I’m not a bestselling author. You guessed right: I moved on. Again.
  4. Which brings me to the here and now. Maybe, readers and other authors would like to read about my struggle to come up with an interesting topic. Not sure if that’s going to work but I guess I’ll find out soon.

Dear readers, what kind of guest posts do you like to read? Interviews? Something related to the author? Or are you more interested in background information for the book? I’m curious! If you’re an author, how do you come up with interesting guest post topics?

About Unicorn Rescue

iA search for missing unicorns reveals a Fate that Samuel has only dreamed of before.

When they first meet, Jordan takes Samuel’s breath away—but not in a good way. Jordan knocks Samuel, a gatekeeper from a world called Eden, flat on his ass. In Jordan’s defense, Samuel did freak him out, appearing out of thin air the way he did. Luckily, the appearance of the unicorns preempts a possible fight.

Relieved to have found Eden’s unicorns, Samuel is astonished that Jordan knows about them, despite the fact that their horns have been concealed by magic. Attempting to remove the halters that bind them, Samuel is rendered unconscious.

The question now is how to get the unicorns back to Eden, as well as solve the mystery of who has stolen them to begin with. But just maybe Samuel and Jordan need to deal with this attraction between them that seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. Are their feelings tied in with the mystery of the unicorns?

An Excerpt from Unicorn Rescue

A whicker interrupted Jordan’s stammer and he jumped. Samuel sighed as he turned his attention to the big, white horse striding toward them. A blue halter sat snug around its head and it flicked its ears back and forth. The halter was wrong, so very wrong. No unicorn should ever be burdened with something so mundane.

“Hello, Ariel,” Samuel greeted her, and brushed a gentle hand over Ariel’s soft nose.

“Gatekeeper,” she said.

Samuel winced. Right. Gatekeeper. That was him. Now if he’d only managed to keep all gates closed—at least the ones he was responsible for. But no, someone had accomplished to not only open a gate but to keep it open while, at the same time, concealing that the gate was open. Worst of all, this same person had abducted Eden’s unicorns. A nightmare in itself because, without the unicorns’ combined powers, Eden’s plants would wilt and the sun lose its power.

“It speaks? I-I mean I know it’s a unicorn and all, but it can speak?” Jordan asked, baffled.

Of course he’d seen Jordan caress Ariel’s horn in Selina’s crystal ball but to hear him ask about her, without any trace of timidness, perplexed Samuel. He asked, “You know what she is?”

“It’s quite obvious, isn’t it?”

Samuel gazed back at Ariel, who stood silent, her head hanging low. She inspected him from sad, dark eyes, and Samuel swallowed. A spell had been cast around her to give her the appearance of a white horse, but of course he could see through it. He’d always know her and her companions, no matter the attempted disguise. But for someone on the other side of the barrier to notice it? That was trouble in the making.

“Doesn’t she look like a horse to you?” he asked.

“I saw Don bring her in, then do whatever he did to disguise the horn. I thought I’d dreamed it, but you can still feel the horn. I guess it only works when you’re not close. He did the same to the other four.” Jordan pointed to the other unicorns that loomed as large, dark shadows in the night.

Honorary Blogger Teodora Kostova: Blurred Lines + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Blurred Lines

by Teodora Kostova

“What would you say if I told you that I’m putting all my current projects on hold and writing a gay romance book?” I asked one of my closest friends a few months ago.

“I think that’s great!” she responded without a hint of hesitation.

Yeah, great. Only, I never planned this. My inner control freak was freaking the hell out. I love reading MM romance books, but writing them? What if I fail miserably? What if people hate it? What if I hate it? What if…

I can go on and on with the ‘what ifs’. In the end of the day, I had no choice. The story was so huge inside of me that I had to sit down and write it or there would have been no space in my mind for anything else.

I’ll always remember the day Jared and Fenix’s story hit me so hard my hands started shaking. I was watching this amazing musical at the Apollo in London’s West End. The two main male characters had such extraordinary chemistry, even though they were friends, not romantically involved. My mind started drifting as I watched, asking question after question and finding the answers itself. By the time the musical was over, I had half the book already in my head. As we were exiting the theatre, I saw a poster advertising another show  performed at the same theatre – a matinee musical aimed at younger audiences.

And there it was. It all clicked so fast and so well that I literally dragged my husband home and started jotting down notes.

Six weeks later, Dance was done and shipped off to the editor. I felt exhausted and yet so accomplished. I never thought I’d write another book again (I say this after finishing every book), and a gay romance at that! Who would have thought?

Wait, what would people think about that? Now that the manuscript was finished I had so much work on my hands – promotion, marketing, swag design, blog tour… How was I supposed to do all that when my audience was waiting for a straight romance book, the third in a series no less? How was I supposed to approach all bloggers I knew and ask them to review my current gay romance book? Did I need to write it under a pseudonym? Did I have to create this whole new persona? New Twitter and Facebook accounts, new contacts, new me?

Lots of people I went for advice to answered yes to all these questions. And yet, my gut feeling was screaming NO.

Why would I do this? It’s my book. I’m as proud of it as I’m of all my books. True, lots of hardcore MM romance fans are biased against authors who write in both genres and even say they’d never pick a book written by such an author. I respect that – everyone’s entitled to their own reading preferences. However, I’m free to do as I sit fit with my own books, too.

Soon, I was a genre crosser with both straight and gay romance books under my belt.

It wasn’t easy convincing people to give my book a chance. But it was worth it. So many of my readers who have never read MM romance before, picked it up simply because it’s my book. And so many of them loved it and went on searching for more books in the genre. I can’t even begin to express how much this alone means to me.

There are currently over seven billion people on this Earth and each and every one of them is different. People should not be cast into groups, judged by clichéd stereotypes and denied basic human rights. Differences should be embraced and encouraged – that’s the beauty of humankind. Diversity is what moves the world forward.

I’ve always said that the way to full equality and acceptance is merging the lines – there shouldn’t be gay weddings and gay books and gay movies and gay couples. We should strike the gay off. It’s life. It’s people. It’s their stories and their joys and their hardships and their children, jobs, houses.

By introducing gay, straight, trans*, bisexual, asexual characters in books, all books, we as authors are helping blur those lines. We’re burning the walls surrounding the artificially created groups and connecting people in a wonderful way.

Would it have been easier to have started from scratch and created a whole new author just for my MM romance books? Probably. People wouldn’t have been biased about my work just because I also write straight romance, and it would have made things much simpler.

But the way I’m doing it, along with more and more amazing authors, is the right way. The way that will help the world move forward and be better for future generations.

About Dance

1Jared Hartley is happy. He has a starring role in a popular West End musical, great friends, adoring fans and his own flat in Central London. A relationship is not something he has ever really wanted. Making big plans for the future is not in his nature – Jared is content with his single status and enjoying all the benefits of that lifestyle.

He doesn’t even realise something is missing in his life.
Until he meets Fenix.

Fenix Bergman has a dream – to perform on Broadway. When he gets offered the lead role in Poison – a new musical based in London, he accepts, immediately recognising the huge potential of the show.

Fenix thinks he has his life completely figured out – he will move to London, help Poison become the new West End hit and bide his time until Broadway comes knocking on his door. He has never wished for anything else but proving to himself and the world that he is a performer worthy of the biggest theatre stage.
Until he meets Jared.

Jared and Fenix’s lives collide and they fill each other’s missing pieces. Neither of them expects to feel so much, so fast for the other.

Neither of them expects to need someone so badly when love hasn’t even been in their plans.

But when Fenix’s star becomes too bright for London, will the dream he’s chased all his life ruin the dream he’s holding in his hands?

Will he survive getting everything he’s ever wanted?

Will Jared?

An Excerpt from Dance

“You wanna tell me what’s been bothering you all evening?” Jared asked casually.

“Huh?”

“You’ve been distracted all through dinner and even now. I know something’s bothering you so you might just as well tell me,” Jared said and resumed his insanely tender pattern tracing on Fenix’s hip.

Even though Fenix wanted to tell him, he was reluctant to.

“Fen?” Jared encouraged gently. The use of that particular nickname broke down Fenix’s last defences. He sighed.

“I don’t want you to move in with Adam while the renovations last,” he said finally, his voice level and as devoid of emotion as he could make it. For a second, Jared looked confused, but then it dawned on him, his eyes sparkling mischievously.

“Are you jealous?” he asked, grinning.

“No,” Fenix denied on an instinct, making Jared laugh.

“You are!”

Fenix hadn’t expected Jared to laugh wholeheartedly at that and pushed his hand away, flopping onto his back. Jared followed him immediately, stretching on top of him and forcing him to meet his eyes.

“You have no reason to be. Adam and I are friends; we’ve always been friends, even when we fucked,” Jared said softly, his gorgeous, pink, wet lips just an inch from Fenix’s. His jealousy flared even more.

“You said he was your first. That kinda leaves a lasting memory,” he said.

There. Proper jealous boyfriend routine.

“But that’s what it is – a memory. If we wanted to be together, we would have been. We just don’t want to.”

That did nothing to ease Fenix’s mind. He felt stupid and irrational and out of line for even mentioning it. He hated that he’d even opened his big mouth, and he was afraid Jared might hate it too.

“Baby? There’s more, I can see it in your eyes,” Jared said, his voice so calm and gentle. No judgement. No impatience. Fenix decided to let it all out, and if Jared decided it was too much to handle, then so be it. But he could not spend the next three weeks keeping all that inside. He opened his mouth and ranted without even pausing for breath.

“Yes, I’m jealous. Even when you say that you’re nothing more than friends, I’m still jealous. He was your first lover and you’ll never forget that. He’ll always be special to you. But what I hate even more than that is the fact that I feel this way, because we just met two days ago! I have no right to feel this way, we’re not in a relationship or anything, we don’t know anything about each other. And yet, the thought of not spending a single night with you drives me crazy, let alone three fucking weeks. I want you to stay with me, not with Adam. I want to tell you that I don’t want to fuck anybody else and I don’t want you to fuck anybody else either. I want…” Fenix paused, his voice growing quiet at Jared’s expression. He had not expected that. “You. I want you, Jared. How can I want you so much after two days? It scares the hell out of me.”

Jared stared at him. He was shocked, but he wasn’t angry. He wasn’t pulling back as if he thought Fenix was crazy. That was a good sign, right?

“You want me to stay with you?” he asked finally.

“Yes.”

Jared’s lips pulled back in a stunning, happy grin. His eyes danced as he kept staring at Fenix as if searching for a sign he was leading him on.

“And you want to be exclusive?”

“Yes!” Fenix confirmed, unable to stop the joyful grin appearing on his own lips.

“I don’t care how long we’ve known each other, Fen. This feels right. I want you, too. I want everything with you,” Jared said as he kissed him, tangling his hands in Fenix’s hair and relaxing his body on top of him. All too soon he pulled back and rested on his side again, tugging Fenix to follow him. When they were facing each other again, Jared moved even closer, leaving just an inch between their lips. “You know how in books and movies at the end, just before the happily ever after, they always say, ‘I knew you were the one the moment I saw you’, or ‘I knew I was going to spend the rest of my life with you when I first met you’?”

“Yeah?”

“I don’t wanna waste that time – the time between realising that and actually saying it. I don’t wanna bend to society’s rules about how long we should be together before I tell you ‘I love you’ or before I know you’re it. Because I knew it the moment I lay eyes on you, Fenix. Something inside me woke up and jumped and pointed at you and shouted: ‘That’s him. That’s the guy for you.’ You’re it for me, love. I know it here,” he took Fenix’s hand and placed it on his chest, right over his heart. “And I don’t care what anybody else says.”

“You’re it for me, too, Jared.”

About Teodora Kostova

Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband Ted and my son Jason. I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job in 2010 when I decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had to guts to fully embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among another things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.

When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Wii game by a six year old.

Honorary Blogger R.L. Rushing: Stutterin’ Scatterbrains – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Stutterin’ Scatterbrains

by R.L. Rushing

The first book of Cursed Existence Collection, MissRebel Nights, was born from a collection of nightmares I managed to write down over a year or so. For as long as I can remember, my dreams have been terrifyingly vivid. In my late twenties, whenever I would wake from a dream, I would jot them down in the notepad on my phone. Somehow, that process kept me from falling right back asleep and into the same twisted dreams. Around the age of thirty, I began having end of the world dreams. Every night of my life, I watched as the entire world collapsed. The eerie feeling of impending doom followed me like a dark cloud throughout the day and back into the night, when I would be slammed with yet another reminder of my numbered breaths. One of those war torn nights, I started cataloging my dream and decided not to stop. I wove the nightmares together with inflated bits and pieces from my years as a run-away.

When MissRebel Nights reached its final ellipsis, I immediately dove into the back stories of Melysa and Kata. They are two characters with whom Rebel shares interesting abilities. Melysious Intent and Katastrophic Decisions both tell their own stories of how the ladies came to meet Rebel.  Each of the first three books are written in a way that they can each be read in any order. My mind is a jumbled, unorganized mess, so it’s only fitting that the Cursed Existence Collection is released in the same manner.

I hope you enjoy the gritty, imperfect lives of Rebel, Kata and Melysa as much as I have enjoyed breathing life into their essence.

If you’re in the New Orleans area on Saturday, August 16th, R.L. Rushing will be attending the New Orleans Author & Reader Convention. To purchase advance tickets, please visit Eventbrite. If you haven’t gotten lost in the Cursed Existence Collection, you can find the ebooks at Amazon: Melysious IntentMissRebel NightKatastrophic Decisions.

About Melysious Intent

10Melysious Intent serves as the back story of Melysa Makenzie, a mind reader. It takes place before she’s thrust into the hellhole which is Ledger Headquarters.

Recovering from physical scars that pale in comparison to the jagged emotional reminders left behind by her drug addicted boyfriend, Melysa Makenzie meets a breathtakingly handsome man named Gabriel Soileau who is intent on showing her a love she has never before known. Due to a life altering encounter, ArtWorx, the advertising firm by which she is employed as a graphic designer, scores a once in a lifetime contract with Gabriel’s revolutionary new airline. When Melysa, not only walks away with the grand prize, but also the clients heart and soul, her co-workers are none too happy. As she works to expand the HydroAir brand, outside forces work to take her down. Is her life at risk simply because of jilted ex co-workers, or is it because she is a telepath?

An Excerpt from Melysious Intent

“Gather around, everyone, we have an announcement to make.”  Gabriel calls the room to order.  “I’d like to welcome everyone to theHydroAir wrap party.  Congratulations are in order to each and every one of you for working so diligently to complete the stringent demands of our company.  We are very pleased with the level of productivity and quality shown throughout the process.  With this deadline now passed, a new one approaches.  The first commercial flight ofHydroAir will begin taking passengers in less than five months.  Thanks to you, we are now fully prepared on the marketing front.  We would like to extend a special thanks to Ms.MelysaMakenzie for her design concept and execution.  Melysa has worked tirelessly since being presented with this task and has exhibited the utmost in professionalism.”  Applause echoes through the house.  “Dave, I think you have a few words to say?”

“Mr. Soileau, and the rest of the Soileau family,”  He starts, but with slurred, mumbling diction.  “It has been our privilege to present our work for you.  We’re all proud of what we’ve handed over to you and only hope we will be able to serve you for years to come.  I’d also like to thank Mr. Billie Tate for opening his home to us to enjoy tonight.  Everyone, give yourselves a round of applause for all of the hard work and long hours.  Make sure to grab a glass of champagne and a dance partner.  Let’s get this little party started.”  It’s quite possible Dave has already had one too many glasses of champagne.  This is a business wrap party, not a kegger.  The crowd disperses and continues with their individual conversations.

Gabriel walks straight back to me.  “May I have this dance?”

“No one else is dancing, Gabe.  We’ll look silly.”

“I just want an excuse to hold you close.  Seeing as how I own the company throwing this party, I’m willing to bet it’ll be okay for us to be the only ones dancing.  Besides, I bet everyone else is just waiting for someone to be the first.”  Tilting those dark eyebrows down at me, he drapes one of my arms over his shoulder and the other around his waist.  Skimming my left jaw line with his attentive fingers, he looks into my eyes with all the intensity in the world.

“Gabriel, people are staring.”  This could be embarrassing.

“Let them stare, Doll.  That’s kind of the point.  I’m yours.  I want them all to see.”  Is he kidding me right now?  I start to pull back and he strengthens his grip on me.  Brushing a few strands of hair behind my ear, he whispers.  “Melysa Makenzie, you are the most stunning woman in this room.  I can’t keep my eyes off you and I’m finding it really hard to keep my hands to myself.  Just dance with me, beautiful.  Okay?”

We are pretty much dancing already anyway, but I nod in agreement.  Being this close, breathing his cedar scent, feeling his heart beat, it’s all so soothing.  I quit thinking about the rest of the people here.  I quit thinking about the job I have and the job which has been offered to me.  I quit thinking about Seth and how the damage he inflicted on me is bound to rub off on this perfect Soileau family.  For this moment, it’s just the two of us.

Dave taps Gabriel’s shoulder and rips me from my perfect world.  “May I cut in?”  So much for that moment.  Gabe graciously bows out and allows Dave to step in.  Our dance stance is a little more formal.

“So, you banging the owner?”

“What?!”

He tightens his hold.  “Let me get this straight.  You actually win the contract over me when I’m obviously more qualified.  Acquire a car that isn’t even on the market and is bound to cost more than two years of your salary.  Now you’re dancing with him for all the room to see.  Hmmm.  If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck…”  His grip on me increasingly intensifies as do the black pupils of his eyes.  I’m pretty sure he’s going to leave bruises.  “That pussy must be some kind of good.  I think I’m just going to have to try it out for myself.”  The smell of whiskey on his breath is sickening and overpowering, but that isn’t what makes me feel nauseous.  One arm clutches me closer, crushingly.  His other hand drops down between us and begins groping at the material protecting my vagina.  Thank goodness I’m wearing the dress, otherwise, nothing would keep his hand from dipping between my legs.  “I’m gonna fuck that pussy ‘til it breaks.  Then you’re fired.  You hear me, cunt?”

“Dave, you’re obviously drunk.  Let me go!”

“I will do no such thing.  The least you can do, is admit to being a little money-grubbing whore.”

See, now this I’m more familiar with.  This is how men behave.  “I’ll admit to nothing, Dave.  If you know what’s best for you, you’ll let me go.”

“So, you take the money and the vacation and the rest of us are left to clean up after you once again while you’re away.  Is that how this goes?  I shouldn’t have even let you come back.”

“Let me come back?  Asshole, I put out more work in one week than half the people in your office combined.  And you clean up after me?  What the fuck?  You have no idea what happened to me.  You have no right to talk to me this way.”

Releasing the fabric of my dress, his hand moves quickly to slap me across the face.  From across the room, Gabriel sees the impact and the distress on my face.

“Take your hands off her.  Now!”  Whipping me around, he asks what Dave said to upset me.  Not wanting to start any drama, I just shrug my shoulders and tell him I should go.

“That’s right, run along, you greedy little whore.  I’ll see you on Monday and we can finish our discussion in private.  Maybe I’ll finally figure out what’s so special about that pussy while you’re riding my cock, bitch.”

Wrong thing to say!  Right in the middle of everyone in attendance, Gabriel slugs him.  Within seconds, I’m surrounded by Soileau brothers.  Alex sweeps in and fists Dave’s collar.  “What’d he do, Gabe?”

“He disrespected Melysa.  He has two seconds to apologize or I’ll make him regret it.”

I pull on Gabe and beg him to let it go.  This can’t be good for business.  “He’s just drunk.  Leave it alone.  I’m sure I deserve what he said anyway.”  Fire rages in Gabe’s eyes.  His mouth curls like he wants to say something to me, but instead, he motions for Alex to drag the crumpled body out the back door.  Peering, nosey people are quickly amassing around the scene.  Their minds are on fire with everything from ‘I knew she was screwing him’, to ‘can you believe’, to ‘company…sue’.  I’m sure they’ll talk about this for the rest of the year.  I’ll never live it down.  Embarrassed would be an understatement.  Crawling into myself and disappearing is exactly what I feel like doing right now.  I stand stunned, watching Alex pull Dave through the back as Dave screams insults and slurs in my direction.  But Alex isn’t alone, he’s followed by the rest of the Soileau clan.  When I finally snap out of it, I follow them out back where I hear them all berating Dave for speaking to me in a less than respectful manner.  These men don’t even know me and they’re doing their best to make him feel two feet tall.  I wish they would’ve been around all the times I’d had random sharp objects shoved in my face by Seth.

“By the way, you dumb piece of shit, she works for us now.  Consider this her two hour notice.”  Joseph Soileau is turning in my two week notice in the form of a pummeling.  At least none of them heard what he wasn’t actually saying.  By the way they’re taking up for me from just the words that he spoke, leads me to believe he may not be left with a pulse if they could hear the things I am hearing from his mind.  “As of this moment, our contract with your company is terminated.  We do not do business with snakes like you.”

Leaving him slumped over in the back yard; they walk back toward the house.  Wayne pulls his phone from his pocket and tells the limo driver to be ready to pick us all up at the front entrance.  “Did you drive, Melysa?”  Still in shock, I can only nod my head at Wayne.  “Throw your keys to Alex.  He’ll drive your car back to Gabe’s house.  We’ll meet him there.  Is that okay?”  It’s not like my shaking ass is going to drive, so I agree and do as he asks.  Gabriel pulls my hand into his and walks me out the front door, accompanied by the rest of his family.  Alex runs down the circle drive to my car, hops in and takes off as the rest of us all pile into the limo.

Honorary Blogger Wade Kelly: A Long Time Coming – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

A Long Time Coming

by Wade Kelly

Thank you for having me here on my release day! I am super excited. This book took 14 months to write and another 10 in production. For me, and some avid fans, if feels like forever!

This is one thing I have learned in the business is that nothing happens fast. That would be one point of advice I’d give for writer newbies or up-in-coming authors. Don’t expect anything fast. Now of course, if it comes faster, then it is a bonus. If you write something in 2 months and it is out in another 6, then good on you! But if you don’t sit there expecting that 6-8 month turn-around from start to finish because when it doesn’t happen it can be depressing.

For me, this has been such an exciting release. I put a great deal of work into this book. I thought of writing a series, because I hear readers love series, and why not do one hitting on different points of self-esteem? This book deals in part with labels and bullying through name calling etc. My character RC actually undergoes all kinds of abuse in his past and the reader learns about it gradually. I didn’t want to do overly “Hollywood” about it, but I think that sometimes kids do not just get abused one time, and in one method. I think it’s possible to undergo a number of different things and feel like a magnet for pain. I think people can feel like a black cloud follows them around and everything bad can happen to them, and only them.

RC is that guy. He’s the one who put up with so much crap you may think he’d be a different, more cynical person, but he’s not. He’s withdrawn and cautious, yet with a desire to try again. He holds onto hope. For years and through many bad decisions, RC exists in a simple world of work and solitude until one day he meets Nick.

In this excerpt for the Blogger Girls, RC tells Nick’s mom his real name and why he’s gone by initials for a long time. Since High School. And for Nick… he sees himself in RC’s tale and realizes for the first time how he could have easily been that guy who picked on RC in high school; and his self-examination is a long time coming.

An Excerpt from Names Can Never Hurt Me

“Are you going to hide up here all night, or are you going to introduce me to your friend?” My mom smiled pleasantly, but I knew she was irked that I hadn’t already introduced him while we were all down in the kitchen. Not officially anyway. She stood in the middle of my room with her hands clasped behind her back. Waiting. If I didn’t do as asked, she’d probably stand there all night. I could comment about her being intrusive, but really, did I need to? I wasn’t bothered.

“Sorry, Mom, this is RC. RC, this is my mom, Cathy Jones.”

RC held out his hand and shook hers. “RC? Is that a nickname or your initials?” Leave it to Mom to broach the very question I had been dying to ask for a while but hadn’t.

He cleared his throat. “Um, they’re my initials, but also a nickname. My full name’s Raffael Charles Coppola, ma’am.” He looked unsettled as he told her.

“Raffael Coppola,” she repeated. “What a great Italian-sounding name.”

“Yes, ma’am. My father was Italian. My mother’s Greek.”

My mom smiled at RC and looked over at me. “I’m going to lie down and read before bed. Try not to be too loud in here.” She turned and walked out.

I knew her comment contained a double meaning of some sort. We weren’t loud before. She left the door open, and I was fine with it. We weren’t doing anything. I turned my attention to the TV and shot someone else. After a couple of minutes, I asked that burning question, “So, why do you go by RC? Raffy’s a pretty cool nickname.”

“That’s not what they called me in school,” he replied very quietly.

I noticed RC had stopped shooting when his character stood motionless and got killed by the advancing enemy soldier, so I looked over at him to see what was wrong. He was staring at the floor, controller limply held in his grasp. “RC?”

“I was a fat kid in school,” he whispered, however it was very quiet in the room after I paused the game so I could hear him well. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking down, but I highly doubted he was counting carpet fibers. He continued slowly, “Kids weren’t very nice.”

RC sat very still and he didn’t look up. Am I supposed to say something? I didn’t know what was appropriate to say. “Um, yeah, I know. Kids can be mean. I’ve done some really shitty things.”

“Everyone called me Raffael until second grade. My mom liked my full name, and that’s how I got introduced. Then I remember eating a ham sandwich at lunch one day and some kid had just learned that capicola was a type of ham. He started laughing and slapping the table as if he’d heard some funny joke. When another boy asked what he was laughing about, he said my named rhymed with a type of ham. The whole table started laughing, and by the end of the day everyone was calling me Capicola instead of Coppola.”

“That’s not so bad. I like ham.” I tried sounding positive, but it didn’t help.

Without reaction to my comment RC said, “They all laughed and started making pig sounds. I was already fat and ridiculed by some kids, but when those other kids started oinking whenever I walked by, it only amped up the harassment because then almost all of my class was making fun of me. It went on all year. When I returned in third grade, I hoped it would change, but it didn’t. There were less random oinks in class, but I after threw up on the bus one morning the nickname changed from Capicola to Ralph.”

“That’s not bad. We have a neighbor named Ralph. I don’t see how that’s so awful when you could easily derive Ralph from Raffael.”

He looked at me then, and the pain in his eyes was dreadful. “It is when ‘Ralph’ is accompanied with retching sounds. It never stopped. The noises and euphemisms for vomit continued through high school. Kids didn’t oink as much, but they pretended to throw up when they passed me in the halls. I was called Vomit, Yackhead, Pukeface, and Upchuck. Kids asked questions like ‘Did you lose your lunch?’ or ‘Can I toss your cookies?’ I made the mistake of crying in front of someone in fifth grade, and that’s when it solidified into shameful taunting for the rest of my life. No one ever called me Raffy. It was always something derogatory.”

RC looked away. I guess looking at me as I sat there with a stupid dumbfounded expression glued to my face was not helping alleviate his embarrassment of the personal pain he had endured in school. He’d just revealed the truth behind his nickname RC, and I gave no reaction at all. I should have, but I didn’t know what to say at first. I’d been one of those guys. I was the jerk in school who pointed out the flaws in others and laughed when they puked on the bus. I was never as malicious as RC had experienced, but I also knew I was not very different from that now. How often had I judged others in my head, yet without verbal aspersions?

The main reason I hadn’t called RC fat when I first saw him was because Marcy said it. Hearing her cut somebody down made me feel bad. If I’d have done it first, I don’t think I would’ve apologized. I compared people, but I didn’t look at someone and automatically think fat, ugly, poor, Asian, bad hair, needs a bath…. Okay, I did think that with RC. He’d looked scruffy and unkempt and I postulated he needed lessons in proper hygiene. It was only because I didn’t know him. Once I’d found out about the job and the skin issues, it all made total sense. And now, he looked way better.

However, after hearing someone from his past would make him feel so worthless, I was angry. Raffael was his name, not Ralph or Capicola or—for fuck’s sake—Vomit! And Raffy was my friend. I’d never had a friend who had been bullied like that. I had always been the one joining in the torment of others. I never instigated, but I think it was because I feared getting caught. But if someone else started the teasing, I’d had no qualms assisting… back then. I was different now.

It happened in high school. Somewhere between eighth and tenth grade, our little “gang” gelled, and it wasn’t an issue excluding others. We didn’t need to make fun of them or bully them for being ugly or fat. We tended to stick to our own. We were the “pretty people,” as M-L had put it. Others stayed away by default. We became a gang without the hate crimes. We didn’t beat others up or stuff them into lockers. We hung out and partied and drank and had loads of sex and talked about careers and college and the future. Our gang became a stagnant bubble of “senior year” even though most of us had graduated college and found the careers we’d talked about in high school.

So when RC described his past, I couldn’t help but consider it could have easily been me tormenting him. It wasn’t, and it wouldn’t be now, but it could have been. I felt terrible thinking I had it in me to hurt him like that.

I finally worked up my nerve to whisper, “I’m sorry.”

RC straightened and took a deep breath. He stood up and shrugged it off. “If that was the worst thing to ever happen to me, I think I’d be grateful. But the rest is a story for another day.”

“You didn’t need to say all that to me. Not if it’s painful.”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s like you said three weeks ago… I feel comfortable around you. I know lots of things about you, but we hadn’t gotten around to me yet. I didn’t want to dump it all on you at once, but I felt like I should start with something. After your mom asked my name, it seemed like the right time.”

My heart warmed. “You feel comfortable around me?”

“Yes. It feels like you’re the first friend I ever had. And if you give me shit over it, I’ll pound you.”

About Names Can Never Hurt Me

iWhat if sexuality wasn’t a definable thing and labels merely got in the way?

Nick Jones can’t remember a time when he wasn’t part of the in crowd. Everywhere he goes, he stands out as the best looking guy in the room, and women practically fall into bed with him. Then, after kissing Corey on a dare led much more and on many occasions, Nick’s “screw anything” reputation escalated, but he didn’t care.

When Nick meets RC at the restaurant where he works, it throws his whole life out of whack. Overweight, always sweaty, gay, and hairy like a bear, RC lives up to his dubbed nickname “Scruffy Dude.” He seems Nick’s complete opposite, but Nick can’t get him out of his head.

Because of peer-pressure and his fears about defining his sexuality, Nick struggles with stepping out of his comfort zone and caring about someone different than himself. If he’s lucky, somewhere between arrogance and ignorance, Nick might find out what it means to be an adult, but if he’s wrong, he could lose everything.

Honorary Blogger Cardeno C.: Mates Series Inspiration Songs + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Mates Series Inspiration Songs

by Cardeno C.

Most of my book titles are inspired by songs I listened to while writing the book to put myself in the right mood and mindset. With the newest standalone novel in my Mates having been recently released, I thought it’d be fun to go over the songs that inspired my books in the series.

In Your Eyes – Inspiration Song: Animal by Miike Snow

It’s hard to come up with a better song to inspire a book about wolf shifters than one called Animal, especially when one of those shifters – Samuel – struggles not to stay in his animal form and leave the human world behind. Samuel was always a good man who wanted to do right by his pack, but in many ways, he lived in a world dark from a lack of emotions and empathy, which was a danger to him and those he was meant to lead.

Teasers - Page 017From the first moment Samuel saw Korban, he knew there was something in the other shifter’s eyes, but it took him many years to identify what it was. In the end, Korban can fill the hole that has always lived in Samuel. Korban’s strength, while different from Samuel’s, compliments the Alpha well and allows him to be the strong leader he always longed to be.

The last thing I loved about this song for this book is the happy vibe in it. In Your Eyes has some sad scenes and battles, both internal and external, that the characters have to fight. It felt good to hear a peppy song as I wrote it.

Until Forever Comes – Inspiration Song: Chasing The Sun by the Wanted

Until Forever Comes is a novel about Ethan a young, ill shifter who realizes his mate is an ancient, dangerous vampire and Miguel, an intelligent, blood-thirsty vampire who realizes his salvation comes in the form of a spirited young wolf. Ethan has never been right in the eyes of his pack. He is a shifter who can’t shift, something that shouldn’t happen.

Teasers - Page 016Being different and physically weak has given him more than his share of sadness and pain, but it also gave him something rare among his people – the ability to look past what’s supposed to be and see what is. Ethan has lived his whole life in a way that doesn’t make sense by shifter law, so when he learns he is mated to a male and a vampire at that, he manages to look past the complications that block stronger shifters and see the simple truth: Miguel is his mate.

That mating saves both men, bonding their bodies and making each of them stronger. Through their connection and love, they give each other life. A vampire and a wolf mated, it shouldn’t have been possible, that day shouldn’t have come. But it did and instead of running away from it, they embraced it and got to live a not-quite eternal life where a shifter can finally shift and a vampire can see the sun.

Wake Me Up Inside – Inspiration Song: Bring Me To Life by Evanescence

The lyrics of this song speak of someone whose core is numb and spirit is sleeping. They need someone to lead them out of that dark place before they come undone; they need to come home. I don’t want to give too much away for anyone who hasn’t read Wake Me Up Inside, but it’s about shifters and the concept of what true mates need from and mean to each other in that world.

About In Your Eyes

In Your Eyes (Mates #3)Raised to become Alpha of the Yafenack pack, Samuel Goodwin dedicates his life to studying shifter laws, strengthening his body, and learning from his father. Taking control comes easily to Samuel, but relating to people, including those he’s supposed to lead, is a constant challenge.

When Samuel meets Korban Keller, the son of a neighboring pack’s Alpha, he reacts with emotion instead of intellect for the first time in his life. Resenting the other shifter for putting him off-balance, Samuel first tries to intimidate Korban and then tries to avoid him. What he can’t do is forget Korban’s warm eyes, easy smile, and happy personality.

When a battle between their fathers results in tragedy, Samuel and Korban are thrown together. With his world crashing down around him, Samuel must save his pack and show them he can lead. But first, Korban needs to save Samuel by inspiring him to feel. Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past the rules they’ve been taught to realize they are destined to fit together.
